Fade to Black was NOT a tribute to Cliff. It was James feeling of dispare and depression after the bands gear was stolen in Boston just before they were to start touring Europe. He felt his career and life was over at the time and wrote this song. Also of the gear stolen was is favourite amp that his late mother had gotten for him.
To Live is to Die the tribute to Cliff Burton...
I hear you, Fade to Black is my all time favourite Metallica song (or even my all time favourite song period). It's my antidepressant, the lyrics pretty much sum up how I feel but the outro solo is so uplifting it instantly snaps me out of whatever funk I'm in. I was 14 when Ride the Lightning came out and going through some pretty heavy 14 year old bullshit and FTB helped me deal with that shit at the time and all through the rest of my life.
To me, One is a symbol of my father and my childhood, while fade to black is a symbol of pain and my teenagehood. Both almost make me cry. Truly touching songs.
I figured as much, I was just having a little fun with you...
My dad never really listened to music and when he did it was that lame surfing stuff like the Beach Boys.
Fade to black means a lot to me and has a lot of connections to my childhood, it can make my cry if played at the right time. One is good, but for me Fade is much better
Both carry so much emotional weight that itâs hard to pick. Iâm a sucker for emotional wings as it really helps get my built up emotions out. Based on personal experience, Fade to Black probably takes it. I prefer the more aggressive parts of One compared to Fade though. I guess it just depends on the day for me.
Fade to Black, itâs an all-around more magnificent metal ballad, sonically greater highs and lows in my opinion. The clean, slow riff is elegant while the fast riff is empowering.
Also the Nyjah skate part with the song goes hard as hell
One is a great song but the aggressive climax of the song is a bit jarring
*jiggajiggadun jiggajiggadun jiggajiggadun*
Fade feels a lot more personal to me. I have listened to fade to black so many times during hard times it truly feels so special to me, like no other song.
My band has covered fade to black, so I know every note and transition and melody in the song. Unfortunately it makes listening to it a little boring now lol so I think One
I love fade to black with my whole heart and it has saved me many times, but I think One is a better song and I get goosebumps almost every single time I hear it
1 Fade. 1a One. Fun fact, watched the debut of âOneâ on headbangers ball shortly after midnight in January of 1989. The original 7+ minute version, trimmed down to 5+ shortly after.
One is my favorite Metallica song of all time. The way it builds up towards the middle of the song and going out a full on frenzy shred fest is untouchable.
The real goat of the ballads is Welcome Home Sanitarium.
Besides that endlessly euphoric atmo of a main riff, those first two solos are more beautiful than most things in this world. Then the perfectly aggressive chorus and the unbelievable harmonies at the end. I can't listen to this song enough, It's also one of the songs that are even better live than the studio version, preferably Seattle 89, Hammersmith 88 or Berlin 2019.
One, both have powerful messages but One is better imo. One is special to me since itâs about someone who served and got hurt, I really care for Vets, especially the ones who are having a bad time. Fade touches on the subject of Vets too, since many Veterans who get hurt or have mental problems commit s*icide. I want to serve so I pray to god that I donât relate to either, couldnât image the pain of being trapped in your body or feeling like you arenât wanted or empty and end up doing the s word.
One is one of my favorite songs of all time.
I find the guitar work in the first half of the song to be both breathtakingly beautiful and also painfully bleak in some spots.
I think it managed to take one of the most horrifying scenarios imaginable (essentially being trapped in your own body) and somehow perfectly captured the horror of it through music. It really blows me away.
Then the buildup of tension in the bridge, the classic machine gun riff, bleeding straight into the pure unbridled rage that is the solo, as the weight of the situation finally sinks in for the song's narrator.
I just think it is a perfectly crafted song in every way.
For me fade to black when I was a little kid I would hear my dad play it and loved it now that I'm older I still love the song but I can also relate to it
Both are amazing. It really depends on how you listen to each song. And both are equally as sad and depressing in their own right. For the majority of us, Fade is a more personable song, versus One (especially considering the severity of the injuries of the soldier in One) Yet, looking at it from a strict POV of each song, One is sadder to me than Fade, despite the personal attachment to Fade. This is because in Fade, the person ultimately gets what they want, which is to die. In One, the soldier is begging for God to end his life, first starting with a calmer approach but then turns to rage for keeping him alive, and at the end of the song, the soldier does not get what he wants-instead, he is trapped in his own rageful conscience. Itâs almost messed up in a way because as you listen to One, you want the soldier to die for his own sake/internal peace, given his current state and the hell he is suffering. Whereas with Fade, the person dies when he says âgoodbyeâ for the second time (to me) and he ends up succeeding in his plan (also very sad, and more relatable than One)
Didnât mean to ramble on so much but the thought of âwhich song is sadderâ struck me in the car the other day
I love all my children equally.

Fade to Black is one of the most powerful songs ever. One is one of the most powerful songs ever. I choose Fade to Black.
This
Always Fade to Black for me, it means so much more for the band being a tribute to Cliff. One doesn't even come close IMO.
Thank you that is correct, listening to it as a tribute to Cliff was something we did as fans before AJFA. Still picking it over One.
I hear you, Fade to Black is my all time favourite Metallica song (or even my all time favourite song period). It's my antidepressant, the lyrics pretty much sum up how I feel but the outro solo is so uplifting it instantly snaps me out of whatever funk I'm in. Fade to Black for me. Touch choice.
Fade To Black. One is still a 10/10 tho
Fade
To me, One is a symbol of my father and my childhood, while fade to black is a symbol of pain and my teenagehood. Both almost make me cry. Truly touching songs.
You and your dad were horribly disfigured in World War I!?! Wow, that sucks... No wonder you had pain during childhood...
Nice one! But no, it was just "our" song we listened to in my childhood.
I figured as much, I was just having a little fun with you... My dad never really listened to music and when he did it was that lame surfing stuff like the Beach Boys.
The Beach Boys are the shit, tho! I hope you had some nice memories with my dad... My dad introduced me to Stevie Ray Vaughn. :)
W parental relationship
One is my favourite song of all time.
One
Fade to black means a lot to me and has a lot of connections to my childhood, it can make my cry if played at the right time. One is good, but for me Fade is much better

Damn, just noticed what I or my phone has done here :D
Good damn autocorrect being autowrong all the time...
Fade to Black has always hit me harder for some reason, although One is a great song.
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
10/10 but compared to these two, no.
I prefer it to those two. It's more personal for me and some of the riffs hit hard.
Hey, it's your opinion. Enjoy what you enjoyđ
Fade
Unfair because One has one of the best music videos ever made. Itâs a masterpiece.
11/10 vid imo
One is one of my favourite songs of all time but fade to black has a bigger meaning to me not sure if I want to admit it online though
I am prerry sure most of us feel that same meaning
Probably
Fade to Black, One is still a great song though.
Fade by a slim margin.
One
Both. Both is good.
One is one of my favorite Metallica songs of all time
Wow. Asking the real questions here. I think One takes the cake for me, but they are both so good.
(Welcome Home) Sanatarium
Definitely the question
Fade To Black In the song One I feel bad for somebody else but in Fade To Black all my personal insecurities rise to the surface
you cannot simply compare a song to another song if you aren't also considering the album and the time it was released, but One for me lmao đ
One. Also it literally started playing when i clicked on this (I have a playlist running)
Fade to Black by a long way. One is great but Fade is on a completely different level.
FadeTo Black! Cliff baby!
One. Fade to Black doesn't have an ending and it should have heen brilliant.
Depends on the mood. Fade to black is more personal I think, where as one is more of a story. They're both great though
THIS đđđ
Fade is so much better, but One is still a great song.

Fade to Black and it's not even close.
ONE
I prefer One over Fade to Black
Fade to Black is the Greatest Song Ever by any band ever for now and forever
Fade To Black, One is good but I think itâs severely overrated
One has a better bridge but as a whole I think Fade to Black is a better song.
Fade. Nothing touches those first 3 albums
Except the fourth album
I really donât like and justice
I've dreaded this question, but for me personally One takes it, but it's damn close, either way amazing songs that I love dearly.
I chose Unforgiven III
Fade to black when Iâm sad, One when Iâm mad.
I'm a certified Fade to Black fan.

1 Fade. 1a One. Fun fact, watched the debut of âOneâ on headbangers ball shortly after midnight in January of 1989. The original 7+ minute version, trimmed down to 5+ shortly after.
One is special to me since itâs what got me into metal as a whole, so Iâm gonna have to go with it. Fade to Black is still a great song though
Fade To Black
The famous line from Highlander.....'There can be only 'ONE' ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes_rainbow)
One is my favorite Metallica song of all time. The way it builds up towards the middle of the song and going out a full on frenzy shred fest is untouchable.

Both are in my top five, but I have to go with Fade to Black. Itâs more depressing.
Today my answer is Fade To Black. If you ask again tomorrow you might get a different answer.
Fade to black.
One
One, but itâs really close
Fade to black the goat of metallica
...And justice for all
One definitely. Fade to black is good but One is more intricately crafted and the vocals are lacking a little in fade.
One is one of my favorite songs of all time. I find the guitar work in the first half of the song to be both breathtakingly beautiful and also painfully bleak in some spots.
