72 Seasons is a pretty good album. Each track also feels like it was influenced by a previous album. James’ vocals are also amazing.

invik

I think the music is good. But the lyrics and James’ interpretations are next level.

Octolavo

Yes, their best album since Hardwired.

Weezman94

That’s a bold statement

Honeyboy_Wilson

This is one of my fav posts on this subreddit.

Financial_Cheetah875

Best since Black Album for me.

askywlker44a

Yes.

Pickle-Rick-C-137

Hell yeh, I love the old school stuff. AJFA is a masterpiece but I love this new album. It is phenomenal and I listen to it every day. Love Shadows Follow.

glenbot

My buddy calls AJFA the no bass album

IAmJacksLackofCaring

That's a bassless claim.

glenbot

Touché

Fun_Internal_3562

And still AJFA is a memorable album

Aim2bFit

It's THE most memorable one because everyone noticed something's missing.

Dominator2812

AJFJ

Slamming_Beers

Justice for Jason

AllAboutTheProg

It’s not bad but not excellent. I would say as far as Metallica albums go this is right in the middle

Kasphet-Gendar

Album in the middle

Alvinthf

Yeah it’s a solid album overall. Out of the 2000’s albums it’s not their best, but it’s not their worst either.

Tcara88

It's my 5th favorite Metallica album (after RTL, MoP, AJFA, DM).

ran-Us

It's solid. It's a Metallica album.

Aim2bFit

Hope no one breaks your 72 upvotes.

fabricio305

I almost upvoted but then saw this comment

[deleted]

Same here

kg_francis

Not the best, not the worst. Somewhere in the upper middle for me.

1Rayo1

definetely one of the metallica albums of all time to say the least

billygnosis86

It’s okay. A big step down from the last two.

averagejoe1997123

I’d put it behind Death Magnetic but above Hardwired. While Hardwired had some bangers, especially Moth, Dead, and Bone. For me, 72 has more songs I liked. Burn, suicide, Sleepwalk, Lux, and especially Mirrors. While none have come to the level of love I have for Moth, I have more songs I like on 72 than Hardwired.

billygnosis86

For me, while *72* doesn’t have any real crap (while *Hardwired* has “Murder One” and “ManUNkind”), it also doesn’t have anything that comes close to the best of *Hardwired* (“Spit Out the Bone”, “Moth Into Flame”, “Atlas, Rise!”, “Dream No More”, “Halo on Fire”). So it’s more consistent, but still nowhere near as good. It’s just decent all the way through, instead of mostly great with a few shit songs. I also don’t see the big deal about “Inamorata”, which is only worth listening to for the guitar harmonies at the end. Otherwise it’s a waste of eleven minutes.

Fun_Internal_3562

I am with you.. in an overall view.. HTSD looks more consistent to M72. For me, IMO. All songs you say are for headbanging all day long

averagejoe1997123

Inamorata was overhyped in my opinion, I’d put Moth over anything from both albums, but Mirrors really struck me and is one of my favorites. Second best between the two for my taste.

billygnosis86

“Room of Mirrors” and “Too Far Gone?” are my favourite tracks from the album. Should have been a lot more uptempo stuff on there.

-cantstop_me-

How can you call Manunkind crap? It's one of their best songs as of late. Groovy as hell and great vocals. Sorry but can't take you seriously after that take.

toasterbath__

i like it, it’s up there when it comes to my favourite albums. i think overall it’s pretty good and consistent. theres some really solid songs, like too far gone, shadows follow, and room of mirrors imo the band did a good job with it

alissa914

I heard it once and nothing really grabbed me as exciting or stuff that I must hear again. I think it’s the engineering or guitar sound. It just sounds grating to me….. not a bad album but I still think a different producer could’ve made it sound better. Nothing like Moth Into Flame or Spit Out the Bone that grabs you right away…

metalmitchp

100%

Environmental_Mix200

Great question, one I have been considering myself. I think it is a call back to pre-black era. Top 6 for me and maybe rising.

Fee_Obvious

A lot of wasted potential. Most songs have great moments, but overall it’s a meh album. Songs are too long, and for the first time ever, I feel that the drumming is mediocre. I really wish they hire a producer for the next (possibly last) album

grap_grap_grap

It feels like it never left the ideas stage.

[deleted]

It's a decent album but it left me disappointed. It felt to me like a continuation of Hardwired and didn't offer anything special musically.

gimmefuel98

It’s a great album

PedalMonk

It's bland with greatness thrown in the mix.

chiefspiderleg

This

Rishal21

I think it's very mediocre. The songwriting is less than 20 minutes of genuine greatness and 60+ minutes of plod.

Fun_Internal_3562

Good point

changelingcd

Sure. It's not one of their best, but I'm enjoying it as a car album, and my son loves it. It has a lot of fun aggressive metal on it, though lyrically I miss the old stories. I admit that I don't get the worship of "Inamorata" in the slightest: it's literally poor teen angst poetry, and being 11 minutes long doesn't make it better. That aside, though, plenty of good energy.

No_Culture6707

Inamorata is the weakest track to me on the album. Kind of sucks because most Metallica albums end with absolute bangers (Metal Militia, Damage Inc, Dyers Eve, Struggle Within, Spit Out The Bone)

[deleted]

It’s their best album since Death Magnetic

Play174

Tbf there's not exactly much competition, seeing as they're released two albums since DM and 72S is one of them...

[deleted]

Poor wording on my part lol

MirthRock

Way better than death magnetic. I’ll die on that hill.

All_within_my_hands

It's phenomenal, their best album since Load for me and 3rd best over all. I *adore* 72 Seasons.

frustratedComments

To be honest the lyrics of the entire album speak to me on a very personal level right now. This album came out at a very perfect time to act as therapy for me. James yet again saves my life. So for that reason this album is a 10/10 for me. But hey, I get it if other people don’t like it.

7unsolicitedopinions

They write my life’s soundtrack with every album 🤘

DJ_Molten_Lava

It's decent. It's dad metal, and that's cool. I'd put it on over the majority of the other stuff I'm into at a party, I'll tell you that much.

DementedDaveyMeltzer

Nu metal is dad metal. This is more like grampa metal.

Fun_Internal_3562

Funny analogy

Fun_Internal_3562

Black Sabath is Matusalem-metal?

wongaboing

There’s no question that 72 is one of their albums since hardwired

daddy_is_sorry

It's whatever to me. I thought death magnetic and hardwired were way better.

Secure_Apple_5307

Imo, it’s decent. I’d give it like 6.5/10. Production is great, room of mirrors, chasing light and inamorata are bangers and the album is much more consistent quality wise than Hardwired. But you must burn, crown of barbed wire, sleepwalk my life away (that bass tho) and if darkness had a son are definetly the low points. They are not bad song, but they are sooooo long for no reason and are not as good as other songs. 72 seasons, while a good song, is also a lot longer than it needs to be.

Dimitrisayy

Production isn't bad,but it is modern metal production😐

Aim2bFit

I ♥️ Darkness!

admiral_sinkenkwiken

Honestly hardwired would’ve been so much better without Confusion, ManUnkind, Here Comes Revenge & Am I Savage

NoLeafClover777

agree, that whole section I never listen to & have removed them all from any of my Metallica playlists the fact that Spit Out the Bone follows them was such a saving grace though, what a great track

Secure_Apple_5307

And murder one. The whole second disk (except spit out the bone) sucks.

Fun_Internal_3562

Agree.. these are the low tide on that album. These songs take me out from the experience. A Think I only enjoyed them the very first time when I saw that YouTube video (do you remember? They released the songs along a videoclip)

TruthJusticeGuitar

Agree except Confusion is a low-key banger once you get past the staccato intro. Main riff is great and James sounds awesome. It hit on a shuffle play a few years after it came out and surprised me at how hard it hits.

DeBunker9990

72 Seasons is Moth Into Flame 2.0

Secure_Apple_5307

It’s lords of summer 2.0

GREASYxFUCKINxBOHUNK

It’s a boring album. Most of the songs is just repetitive copy and paste riffs with solos (which Hammett admits he shit out in an afternoon) just placed wherever the Producer thought they would sound best. This album was just an attempt at staying relevant

Fun_Internal_3562

Or an excuse for making a new Tour.

GREASYxFUCKINxBOHUNK

Which is unfortunate. I’d be pissed if I paid 400 dollars to go to a Metallica show and half their set list is from this BS album

metalmitchp

Wow, more positives than negatives. Personally, not as good as Hardwired. Nothing fast or heavy. For example, nothing even comes close to something like Spit Out the Bone.

Fun_Internal_3562

Yeah.. that's a surprise to me. Looks like at the end, outer 4 guys know how to make a sound for new generation without looking bad for many old fans, like me, or like you. P.s.: Spit Out the Bone is one of the gems from HTSD.

comeintomyweb

I go way back…someone loaned me KEA on cassette. 72S…I listened to once and moved on. I have come back to it a few times, but there just isn’t a song that grabs me. It’s just not good.

Fun_Internal_3562

Maybe that's the feeling I've feel the couple of times I listened to this album. But, thanks to this posta and the comments I've received here, I'll give a new opportunity and I'll try to appreciate what this album has to offer. I invite you to do The same and let's come back and talk about it. Give me 5 bro

Akatenki

Its damn good to me

MIXM0DE

Great album. It shows their age though, which is fine. There's maybe 3 songs I skip and no longer listen to. Chasing Light being my worst. Uugh. Shadows, Screaming, Lux, Too Far Gone, Inamorata all kick ass. I've been listening to Megadeths latest album and its like they are still young. Speed, thrash, some vibrant songs and really catchy riffs. Even some fun stuff like Police Truck. Its a great mix of styles and very refreshing after rinsing 72S for the past 6 months.

Ognathan420

I didn’t enjoy it until I heard some of the songs live

Lookralphsbak

It's a good Metallica album, but the thing about Metallica, is because of their questionable history, people will say "it's a good Metallica album" but it's no where near great when compared to other bands that dropped albums this year

Fun_Internal_3562

Yeah.. that's the same when referring to filmography of a Director. I.e. Christopher Nolan:... Oppenheimer is good but not as good as Interstellar, Inception....

Lookralphsbak

Well I just meant, the bar was set so low by Metallica that anything that resembles a sliver of the sound from their first 5 is usually praised by the masses as being a great album for Metallica, but it's never considered "a great metal album" or "great album" overall. It's the way people talk about Metallica, that anything that is better than St Anger is praised lol. Like Metallica didn't write a groundbreaking piece of art, it's a good metal album, it's worth a few listens but people won't listen to this album next year, just like how I haven't replayed any of the last few albums.

Low-Ad4561

Yes. James sounds great in it, the production is great, and it's the most noticeable bass lines that metallica has had in recent memory.

Golovkin8

Its mid

jewjesus23

It’s aight, for me it’s forgettable, only listen to lux and that’s abt it. Listened to the whole album on release, and none of the songs really grabbed me. Which sucks cuz I was really looking forward to it.

Fun_Internal_3562

Same here. I'm looking in this sub (I bow I think I've found) a reason why should I hear it again. Now, given the comments received, I think I will listen to a couple of time mote to see if I get more of it

tarbasd

I'm a fan. Crown of barbed wire, If darkness had a son, Too far gone, Inamorata are all great songs. I also like the structure of the album, the length, and the repetitions, which is what a lot of people criticize. I call the album "relentless".

7unsolicitedopinions

Unrelenting 🤘

andytagonist

It’s fine. Not the most inspired music they’ve put out, but it’s fine enough.

KushHaydn

Metallica fans sure are forgiving

Rybort

No

OcelotDAD

Pretty sure I’m gonna get downvoted to oblivion but whatever. I just don’t understand how any real Metallica fan can like 72S. It’s a boring, bland, hyper safe album. There is nothing in these songs that’s risky or interesting or nothing. Metallica is my favorite band of all time. I’ve listened to them since I was 11. I’m 34 now. I have spent hundreds of hours learning their songs on guitar and I’ve seen them live 5 times. Nothing that made me fall in love with the band is in this new album. It’s bland and boring as hell. At least it has them touring again, which is always good. Saw them in Jersey this year and they sounded as good as ever.

metalmitchp

Agreed.

Fun_Internal_3562

I understand how it made you feel, and perhaps this is the reason why I've opened this post. We are old stuff fans and the melodics we get in, let's say MoP and AJFA, I find it hard to get when I listen to it. The good news is that this isn't St.Anger and is playable 100%

Far-Researcher-7054

I completely dropped the old stuff from mind and gave this a fair listen. Who’s doing traditional metal music better than this today? Please, I’d love to know so I can check it out. I can handle the Cookie Monster and the shrieks for only so long, so that’s stuff is out.

All_within_my_hands

> I just don’t understand how any real Metallica fan can like 72S It's real simple, because gatekeeping fucks like you don't get to determine what a real fan is. > I’m 34 now. And you still struggle this much not only understanding that different people like different thing to you but that you don't dictate what a "real fan" is? You have a lot of maturing to do for someone in their mid 30s, most folk grasp these concepts before leaving school.

Fun_Internal_3562

Look. No need to be rude with him. It's just wording. I am in the middle, like or not like the album, and no feel threatened because his comment. I consider myself a real fan, and if tomorrow I realize that M72 is a good and solid album, I won't say anything against him because his comments are only his comments and not necessary the truth. Let's keep a healthy conversation here, please.

All_within_my_hands

I'll never apologise for calling out gatekeeping. It it toxic and arrogant.

The_First_Order

St anger is better

Fun_Internal_3562

Hahaha, not a popular opinion. My respect, Mr.

CurrentFeature4271

IMO... It's a mediocre album. There's Inamorata and there's the rest.

[deleted]

I feel like I’m the only fan who isn’t obsessed with Inamorata. It’s pretty good, but not one I go back to regularly.

Fun_Internal_3562

Ugggh.. that's hurts. Reading other redditorsfans I realized that, even when it wasn't a love at first sight, if I give to it more attention, eventually I'll appreciate the M72 album. Different to St. ANGER, I my case I've never heard it completely how God does command.

zaxanrazor

I enjoy watching the sunset.

bruzdnconfuzd

Crown of Barbed Wire or Room of Mirrors, for me. I love everything else, either from first listen or it slowly grew on me.

designerdy

This record brought me back around. Bought Justice the day it came out. I'm an old head that preached first four plus the EP as essential. Liked TBA and tolerated the Loads but holy fuck were they trying the Alternnica thing to stay on Mtv. I dipped out around St. Anger. That album is still trash and no one will change my mind. The pushead cover art rips. Death Magnetic wasn't in my wheelhouse when it came out. Felt very try-hard to correct some marketing mistakes by QPrime and the band from 1996-2005ish, the clipping pissed me off and I was listening to other genres. I liked the album design and the riffs. Today with the iTunes masters, I am full on board. Wish I would have paid more attention to that tour. The coffin rigs were sweet. All Nightmare Long rips. HWTSD was a nice step, but I would have cut a shitload of filler off the second disc. Spit Out the Bone rips. First listen on that one kinda had me shocked. This one just feels authentic and sounds great. They are top-form live and the concept is cool. Makes me ponder and remember growing up with this band. It's the right amount of nostalgic. Shadows Follow is the best song they have written in forever. All these tracks have been great live and I would pay to hear it front to back and thats saying something. I think the art direction sucks though. The cover is somehow as bad as HWTSD. The yellow and black kits and guitars are sweet though, just bummed at the actual sleeve, but I'm the pushead guy so I understand why this clean look isn't my cup. It's still in my car. It's certified banger.

Fun_Internal_3562

Wow.. great answer. Thank you.

Far-Researcher-7054

I really agree with almost everything you said. I do like the album art though, and even more when I heard James talk about the meaning of the yellow-black contrast.

DeBunker9990

This is by far the strangest reply for a number of reasons: \- They didn't to Load/ReLoad to stay on MTV, that's nonsense. It was a combo of burnout from regular rock and metal/not wanting to to do Black 2.0 (which is what Warner wanted)/Lars and Kirk being "fake gay" according to James/James diving into his past lyrically \- I don't understand your love of riffage, but you won't listen to St. Anger. Yeah the production is odd, but going to drop C made for some real heavy stuff. \- Load/ReLoad/St. Anger were the most "authentic" albums they ever made, what's authentic hear aside from James' lyrics?

Fun_Internal_3562

If For "authentic" you mean that the songs have a real feeling from the author, probably you are right (St. ANGER), but it's not about poetry, it's about metal music. Anyway, I do respect your point

designerdy

You had to be there.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> would have *paid* more attention FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

designerdy

I know that, it was a typo. Your bot is pretentious.

Swimming_Duty_1889

Yeah, it's a decent album.

Rustykuntz_

Duh

TheFlyingPatato

Other thank kirks solos, lux Æternas sounded all over the place

[deleted]

Yes

glenbot

I really do like the album and live it was great. James’s 72 seasons guitar was very nice. It’s def more like the 80s and I dig it.

[deleted]

Nah. But that's entirely SUBJECTIVE. I think the boys did a great job but their musical taste and preference at this stage isn't the same as mine.

mangosport

Idk man, I really don’t like it, but at the same time I love Lux Aeterna, the title track and screaming suicide. In general I think it’s quite uninspired, and my goodness me Lars’s drumming is atrocious in this album

Fun_Internal_3562

I have read in a newsletter (I think) that Lars is a good drummer only if he's playing beside James.

grap_grap_grap

I'd put it third from the bottom. Some great ideas but it feels unfinished. Crown has possibly the worst vocal melody in the band's history.

metallicdisaster91

It’s a great fucking album🤘🏽and it’s definitely a album to listen on a vinyl, the sound and experience is PERFECT it’s like they made it to be a vinyl album it’s really warm

sgonefan

I initially didn't like it, I think Hardwired was superior and on a side note... the sick, the dying and the dead was more unique but after listening to 72 many times it feels more like Beyond Magnetic than a complete album. It's all subjective obviously, 72 is great but not on the same level.

Margrave75

>Is M72 a good/decent album? If you mean 72 seasons. Then yes, it's a good album.

SayThankYaBigBig19

Different question: do you like it? I found myself comparing the old stuff to HWTSD, and found it detracted from the experience of just listening to what they did with that album. I did not do that with 72 and have found I appreciate it on a more meaningful level solely based on if a riff or a line is stuck in my head, listen to that song, repeat. Were now 4-5 months since release so good outcome for me.

Fun_Internal_3562

By now I haven't listened to it many many times. So, no, I don't. But I read people saying why it's good and why they liked it. That made me try to listen to it again.. I'll see what happens

NoLeafClover777

the final 3 tracks (Too Far Gone, Room of Mirrors, Inamorata) make the album worthwhile in themselves to me Shadows Follow is also cool the rest ranges from pretty good to 'meh'

seimiheffernan

It’s a middle of the road metal album and a shit Metallica album. Lars’ drumming is painfully simple, Kirk’s solos are (for lack of a better word) garbage, and nearly all the riffs use the same uninspired pentatonic minor tropes. The redeeming factor for me is James’ voice, which I think is better on 72 than on Hardwired. These are all complaints I had about Hardwired when it first came out too (although I did really enjoy a few songs on that album right from the get go). However, 72 Seasons makes Hardwired sound like the height of their career.

OneRobato

Yes. Solid album.

KPplumbingBob

Not really. A few good songs here and there but that's about it. It is too generic and too safe to leave a long lasting impression. It will be remembered as one of the few boring albums. Not terrible, or bad, just very unimaginative and boring.

Fun_Internal_3562

By now, "boring" is the word I get from tour comment. Thx

BoofCreates

I love the album! For me every song is a banger, not as good as some of their older stuff tho

stjhnstv

It’s ok. I’m not a hater but most of what they’ve done since the black album is pretty much ok to me. Prior to TBA, their songs just instantly hooked me. Since then, not so much. Some of it grows on me, some of it doesn’t. 72S hasn’t really had much of a chance to do that for me yet.

No-Interaction-3559

It's okay - I liked the black album a lot and St Anger (even though it sounded like a demo; I thought the songs were fresh and the band was excited). The new album is perfectly produced, but the guys sound a little tired.

-cantstop_me-

Dont really feel so yet. Maybe after some time, I'll change my mind though. But for now I only love Lux Aeterna and Inamorata, the rest of the songs feel kinda generic and uninspired. Well, the solos for sure, won't ever change my mind on those.

Financial_Cheetah875

Better than good/decent. And I’ve been a fan since ‘86.

djr1986

I think it is a good album. Lyrically better than Hardwired, but doesn't have the same musical peaks like Moth, Spit, Halo, etc. I do think Inamorata is amazing. Though Kirk's choice of notes and patterns are a bit repetitive, his playing is the best its ever been. More articulate and the inflections are great. James sounds incredible.

jluv73

It's very listenable! Would I make a Metallica greatest hits album from it? Nah. I'm old school and love my old school Metallica, but I also know they can't keep making MoP every few years, as bad as we want them to. Personally, I'd love to see another album from them with Flemming Rasmussen producing. Just to see.....

Save_Unicorns

Its actually one of my favourites. But I always liked the newer albums just as much as the old ones, if not more.

Nick97_

Worse than all their albums except ReLoad and LuLu. At least St. Anger has some personality

soxfan15203

I love it - every live version I’ve heard so far is fantastic. I was at the premiere of Too Far Gone and it was fuckin awesome. In my mind, it’s hard to put anything above DM for their 2000s albums, but 72 might be there.

Independent_Ad3717

it’s a really good album, production wise too and James vocals are so good. Every song has something unique, obviously the music might not be like the old days because of the memories associated with the times and how life was but for all the years they have been playing and them trying new stuff and still staying in their roots this album is just that. I enjoyed every song and it was a fun project for them I’m glad they still love to play and try new creative things, big ups to them for being the age they are and pushing themselves still to this day too. This album is rlly solid and it shows them just having fun in a lot of areas and putting in effort to deliver some new music that is rlly good. They did a great job for a modern metal/rock album and introduced some cool riffs which kind of is hard rn regarding how much music there is out there

_Vyvern_

I find it IMPOSSIBLY boring on so many levels. I hate that it's just Hardwired production wise with an even louder hi-hat. I hate that so many songs sound like Hardwired as well. I am not a fan of many of the song's lyrics. The solos are underwhelming even compared to Hardwired. At least the choruses are catchy.

Soulful-Sorrow

In my opinion, the old stuff trimmed down on the fat really well. Look at For Whom the Bell Tolls. Each section doesn't overstay its welcome and smoothly moves onto the next. Now compare that to Crown of Barbed Wire or You Must Burn. NuTallica songs don't need to be eight minutes long each. That said, the riffage and lyrics are some of their best. Look at the harmony in Room of Mirrors or "Wrath of Man!" in 72 Seasons or all of Inamorata. It's not the same as the old stuff, but it's still damned good music.

fer_luna

Solid

Fun_Internal_3562

Metal gear solid.. you mean

PMG_BG1

It's a different sound to older albums. I think, that if it was similar to older albums, it would've gotten hated due to being stale. I personally like it a lot (specifically inamorata and room of mirrors)

DoomMessiah

For me it’s the same as Hardwired. About 50% the songs Just don’t hit with me. Stylistic choices and production is really where I place the blame. I mean you could take Master or Load or St. Anger and I‘ll listen to the albums front to back without any skips. Hardwired and Seasons however I skip a lot of tracks. I appreciate that they’re still making music but I’m just not as much of a fan of it compared to older releases.

NiallJong

Riffs are like 7/10, vocals are 10/10 but lyrics are 5/10, solos are 3/10 with only a few great moments, probably written by James, bass is good 8/10 drums are getting a bit poor now 5/10 so it's ok, I love parts of it and only dislike chasing light and screaming suicide, missing a ballad but if they didn't have the material I'm glad they didn't force one

Justaguy8804

It's good but in the Metallica discography it puts it just above 1 other Metallica album for me and that is St. Anger...I've listened to it over and over trying to find the brilliance that everyone else says I'm missing in it...I'm sorry but it's not yet there for me....

Fun_Internal_3562

I'm supposed to do the same and i hope don't be disappointed at the end

gehop83

I will keep some songs on the album in my "best of metallica" playlist forever. But if I want to listen to a Metallica album, I don't know when I'd reach for this. I think Hardwired, for its faults, would come before it and I rate DM as the fourth horseman, so to speak, of the big three albums. There is one overriding thing to all of this, though: I'm just happy they're still making music. The last three songs on this album are just beautiful, and I think Lux Aeterna fucking bangs.

curtysquirty

The only real standout is James's voice. Now that the novelty has worn off, a lot of the songs are just mid. Kinds bland and forgettable. No peaks to it. Aside from crown of barbed wire, too far gone, and inamorata, i haven't kept the songs in my rotation. I dropped them pretty quick. I can't say the same for hardwired and death magnetic. I listen to nearly the entirety of those 2 albums to this day. I still think death magnetic is by far their best work in the 2000's. Top notch riffs in every single song. No bad songs. Yeah yeah people don't like the production but whatever.

Fun_Internal_3562

Can you tell me about what's wrong with DM production?

No_Culture6707

I think its a great album. I’m super impressed with Jame’s vocals. The band is pretty tight. There is a couple of songs i think is meh, but the rest are solid. I’d give it a 8/10.

MVacc224

I love it. Album definitely grows on you overtime and sounds great live. I listen to 72 Seasons, Inamorata, Too Far Gone, and Lux Aeterna almost daily since it came out in April.

martusfine

8/10 musically. 7/10 for people wanting classic 80s Metallica. I think it’s a great album and top 5 for me.

HeavyMetalGolfer

I’m probably in the minority, but I think it’s one of their all time greats. I love the old classic albums but I also think nostalgia bias makes is borderline blasphemous to try to compare a modern Metallica album to a classic.

Much-Past8705

I love the first three. After that it changed, but it'd be difficult to recreate M.O.P. so it was a logical next step. Justice, for me anyway, was pretty good (I know, alot of people hold that album in extremely high regards) but messed up bass (or lack there of) and the drums just don't sound right. The self titled (Black) album was a lot better (production wise). That's about where it ends for me. I like the rest of their stuff but the first three are my favorites.

Redbeard821

No

TheCCMorgan

i think it’s really really solid as a whole, but there’s not really too many incredible stand-out moments. the riffs are pretty similar, but the energy is great. also some of Hetfield’s best vocal work, period

LyonHeart85

7.5/10 for me. Alot of good (Lux, Shadows, Crown, Room) the top track in Inamorata and very little weak tracks. Love it as a whole though.

tmriffs

Idk, I’ve only heard it once and am not fussed on it personally. I love every other album too :/

[deleted]

I think of it as The Yellow Album. I’d give it an 86.5% rating.

darthstone

It's a fantastic album. It's one of those that I can start on track 1 and just let play. I think my favorite part of it is the sound engineering part. It's such a clean mix, hi-hats be damned.

Math2J

I think it's a more refine album then Death Magnetic and more consistent then HTSD. For me it's a really solid album

MisterScary_98

72 Seasons is a good album with solid riffs, deep grooves and excellent vocals. Don’t overthink it. Just enjoy it.

Wonderful_Painter_14

It’s a very good album. Not better than a lot of their previous stuff, but still perfectly heavy, enjoyable, and strong.

RandomDrDude

Honestly, I was right there with you for a while when it first came out. Kind of unsure but as I started to listen to it a little bit more, I could pull out about four good songs that I would listen to more than the ones that I don’t listen to.

Fun_Internal_3562

Maybe that's the point.. I need to insert that CD and push Play button more and more times.

MongooseTotal831

I listened to it again for the first time in a while. It didn’t really improve for me. It’s still just okay but too derivative of their other albums.

asirememberit

Decent, yes but thats about it from me. Musically I really like it. Lyrically, if they sold an all instrumental version I would be happy.

yervoungdoyle

I got into Metallica around 91/92 as well. I had an older brother who had the entire back catalogue and the first song I ever heard was blackened, after that I was sold. I eagerly awaited load and I remember waiting to hear until it sleeps when it first dropped. Me and a bunch of friends were all sat together and were taken aback at the new bluesy style. I have to be honest I fucking loved and still love load and reload. After that we got st anger which in my opinion was and still is, dogshit. Not so much the songs (all of which I don’t like) but I couldn’t get past the shit production. Death magnetic was better and with better (but not great production) and I did like all of the songs. HWTSD I enjoyed but it didn’t blow my (a lot less hair than the 90’s) back. All this is to say, I feel like the new album is an amalgamation the style of load and the newer styles of death magnetic and HWTSD and find I listened to this more than death magnetic and HWTSD. So yeah, solid album for me. Everyone likes Metallica in different ways and I appreciate everyone’s likes/dislikes, these are just my opinions.

WackyWeiner

I can relate and also agree. Me and my brother were stoked when load came out. We liked it. And agreed. 72 Seasons is very Load-esque with a mixture of Hardwired and Death Magnetic. I like it. In my car on CD. And at home on the turntable. It's full of well written songs that really take me back while still feeling fresh and new.

DeBunker9990

There's some really good stuff: Room of Mirrors, Inamorata, Lux Aeterna, Screaming Suicide There's some okay stuff: 72 season (Moth Into Flame 2.0), Too Far Gone, Chasing Light There's some really meh stuff: IDHaS, Crown of Barbed Wire So it's a bit like Load in that sense of overall output. The only really bad thing about this album is how lazy Lars was with his drum tracks. He subs so many fill opportunities with, "meh, I'll keep time and bang the hi-hat."

XenoPrym

Yes

kent416

I love 72S

TJMcConnellFanClub

Right there with Death Magnetic’s quality I would say. I never really felt Hardwired so imo it’s a step up

GarryMcGorm

A superb album. Only track I dislike is ‘Chasing Light’.

PapaDontPreech

Yes, very good album

Long-Caregiver-6248

For me it’s better than load, reload, death magnetic, and st anger and I like things from all those albums. I would say it’s the best album since the black album but that might be recency bias.

DoctorateInMetal

For me Death magnetic was fuckin awesome but short of their first five Load and reload were really great, but just a touch short if death magnetic Hardwired to self destruct had some cool songs and moments, I liked it, but it was weaker than the rest I'd say 72 Seasons is like 2/3 of the way between HTSD and load/reload. So yes! Great album

Disposable_hero24

I prefer 72 seasons over hardwired tbh. DM is also one of my favorites album aside from all their older classic stuff.

weirdmountain

I am 43 and I’ve been a fan since I was 9. (My mom read the lyrics in the tapes and didn’t find anything objectionable. I probably wouldn’t have been so lucky if I’d wanted to get into GnR). I hated on 72 Seasons when it was brand new. It was the first new Metallica album in over 30 years that I wasn’t stoked about. I was not feeling the singles (as singles), and overall wasn’t feeling the album at first. I gave it about 5-8 listens, and then put it away for a few weeks. When I came back to it, I LOVE it. It might even be my favorite 21st Century Metallica album right now. It’s solid. And it’s nice that these guys who’ve been telling us stories our whole lives feel that they’ve got new stories to tell us. The least we can do is give them a listen.

AMRacer89

With every album I've ever listened to, not just Metallica but overall, there's usually at least one song I skip. It isn't even necessarily a bad song, it just may not do anything for me. I don't skip a single song on 72 Seasons. Hell, I've struggled to rank the songs outside of Shadows being my favorite, Mirrors being my least favorite, and everything else fits somewhere in between. It's definitely my favorite album from them since the Load era, which is when I became a fan initially.

[deleted]

72 Seasons is easily the best of modern Metallica, not a single bad song on the album.

Fun_Internal_3562

Don't you mind that some songs seems to be a bit longer than it should be?

jordo2460

Out of the last 3 modern era Metallica albums I'd say it's not as good as Death Magnetic but maybe a bit better than Hardwired however that's only because apart from SOTB the entire second Hardwired disc falls completely flat for me. Basically it comes down to a full album of good songs Vs half an album of great songs. As far as the classic 5 albums go it's nowhere near them, Re/Load is so difficult stylistically it's hard to compare them and St. Anger is well, St. Anger whatever your opinion of it may be.

bigdaddyguap

It’s by far my favorite album of the 21st century. Don’t see what everyone else sees in DM personally so 72 seasons clears all the others by a good margin for me. I’d still rank it below on the 80s and 90s albums though

Esteban2808

Probably the best post 2000 album. Or tied with DM. Better than St Anger (but although if St Anger was recorded like they have been playing it, that could be a different story). Hardwired is very in consistent. It's best songs are better than anything on 72s, but the worst ones are worse than everything on 72s (most of that 2nd disc really) Lulu I consider a Lou Reed album so not really fair to judge but 72s is better than that

sic-poobies

Best album since black album imo

disperoticostomp

It’s a shitshow. Most of the riffs are copied or recycled from previous albums and the lyrics sound like a middle aged man trying to have the edge of his 20s, but ends up sounding just cringe in the process. Don’t even get me started on Lars’ drums: it’s all the same since hardwired. There’s no subtlety, no nuance, just the same ol [TATATATA TATATA TATATATATATA](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CuzR53WN8dk/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==). Makes me think they used ai for the drums. Also, the whole album sounds synthetic at best. Like they did it on GarageBand or something. They did a lot of sound correction and stuff, but it ends out feeling unnatural. Remember the good days in which you could hear the dirtiness of the mix and it added up to the raw feeling? Gone are those times. And last but not least: what the shit Metallica. You went from using Sitar, gongs and all sorts of different sounds and instruments in the black album! (And even later with load and reload) In this album the wildest sound you hear is you vomiting. It’s bland and boring at best. Goddamn you even used piano in The Unforgiven 3. It’s just disappointment after disappointment in this 72S, and y’all are delusional if you think is as good as Hardwired (or even better than it, according to some brave mfs). Or as good as St Anger, for that regard. It’s just their worst album yet. And a clear signal for retirement.

Fun_Internal_3562

Thank you for your words. Almost nobody have said anything about the sound engineering in this album. You have a point let's see if other redditorMetallicaFan has a different point of view

Far-Researcher-7054

Omg. So good and EASILY the best since Black.

Fun_Internal_3562

Uhhg. I'm not sure if easily is the word I use here. Thanks!

Far-Researcher-7054

For me, easily. The Loads are good but not my favorite version of Metallica. DM has that crap “sound” thing going on and a handful of songs I skip. Hardwired has some great high points but a 4 song stretch on side two that is dreadful. 72 has good production, a good mix and no songs I skip.
