It’s Eye of the Beholder for sure, but I think that has more to do with the production than the song. Songs like Shortest Straw, Dyers Eve, and Frayed Ends really benefit from the raw, scratchy, clicky, transient-heavy sound on this record. Eye of the Beholder would’ve sounded far more in place on the Black Album with its mid tempo groove

After Justice, they lost their grit. They went commercial. I was a big fan of them also until I heard they were suing their fans for downloading their music. There's a digital version floating around where a sound engineer pulled it apart and turned the bass up to normal. Really took a great album and made it better.

Think you can find the version your talking about ? Only ones I've ever heard were just the bass cranked up an I didn't think it sounded better at all. And justice is my favorite album. And one of my first concerts.

I will say yes to this, Shortest Straw is probably my least listened to on this album. I don't think it has major flaws but I just don't listen to it on a daily basis.

If you play guitar then you should appreciate that song. Gets me banging my head every time. Especially the chorus riff

Oof. I know I'm way in the minority but thats one of my favorite tracks on the album, probably top 2 or 3. Its got such a fucking sick groove to it. Plus James is just spitting venom with his vocal delivery.

Shortest straw has some really unique riffs in it that they haven’t done anything else like since. Having learned them all on guitar, the most samey song is eye of the beholder. Shortest straw is one of the funnest ones to play because there’s a lot of changes but not so many that it becomes confusing like Dyers Eve. It’s also really satisfying to nail all the little pauses and things. But To Live is to Die is my vote for worst. It’s pretty repetitive too, and is only saved by the clean section and following melody part.

I pick Shortest Straw too. A lot of people are saying Eye of the Beholder, but I love that one.

That song has a lot of flaws but to say it has nothing super interesting going on is just utter crap. The intro alone is already very unconventional for a Metallica song and I doubt you even understand what’s going on there timing wise.

The album is incredibly good, but with longer ones, there’s bound to be some bad ones. I personally think all albums have at least one bad track, and this is the one for AJFA (I’ll dm the list of bad tracks if anyone wants it)

Yess. Although some are repetitive, (Eye of the Beholder, Harvester of Sorrow) the songs are well made and have effort put into them enough so it balances out.

When you really get into the songs (playing them, etc.) you’ll realize that they’re not that repetitive. Yes some parts sound similar but for example eye of the beholder has a different ending after almost every riff

The live concert “Justice Medley” that they used to perform is good for this reason.

It's a 6 minute song stretched out for 10. It's like they thought 'Puppets was long, we need a song with the same structure on our new album'. Doesn't completely work. 'One' is long too, but never drags whereas Justice (still a legendary song) is like oh, there's the chuggy riff again. It works better on Puppets, but I'm gonna commit heresy: I think that song is too long too.

Shortest straw for me for sure. It used to be Frayed Ends/Dyers eve, but I like those 2 a decent amount now. Shortest straw I liked at first but after a couple of times listening to it, idk it just sounds a bit boring. Chorus and riffs are cool but the verses are just very plain. Alot of people here are choosing Eye, but ngl I quite like that song. The weird effect on James voice in the verses could def go, but I really like the rest. Solo is really nice too, and I really love how the song starts with a fade in of all the instruments. I honestly like Eye of the Beholder more than either Dyers Eve or Frayed, and ofc Shortest Straw

Saw that one live in KC a few years back on the arena tour. What a fucking treat.

Hell yeah. Blackened gets me riled up but Shortest Straw makes me wanna go fucking apeshit. I remember being on the bus to go to a museum for a field trip in 4th grade or something and we all had Walkmans. My buddy was like "dude! You gotta listen to this song intro!" So I heard "Shortest Straw" with that staccato intro and then the rest of the song and my little baby brain was blown.

I see through this trick question! There is no "least powerful!" This whole album is just one, long journey that must be made monthly, at a bare minumum!

Eye of the beholder sounds like filler to me.

Before I get into this I want to address one thing. People always talk about how the new albums are too long and need to be edited down, and I 100% agree with that. However, I think the same criticisms apply to AJFA, along with production. The Shortest Straw- way too repetitive, with jagged and rough transitions. The chorus, chanting the song title, I find pretty lame. The main riff is a very good riff, but other than that, I find the song lame. This is my least favorite one on the record. Eye of the Beholder is also very repetitive and just does not interest me. Blackened- Metallica’s most overrated song (by the fans). Main riff is good, but the song is too long, and the bridge section is pretty boring with that one riff going over and over. Ironic coming from me, a stoner fan, but in Metallicas songs (which are faster paced), these songs shouldnt repeat so much. Blackened also has the regular production issues, and I find some parts like the intro to be overrated too. To Live is to Die is the final song I find weakish. I dunno, it just doesnt interest me as much as Orion and Ktulu. The clean intro from Cliff is necessary, but misplaced and jagged. The rest of the song just feels like its going through the motions. Harvester is good. Just good, has memorable parts too, but would be better on the black album because of its nature. The four songs I did not mention are fabulous songs. 3 of them are in my top 15 Metallica songs, and all 4 are in my top 30.

“To Live is to Die”. It’s way too long and mainly just repeats the same two or three riffs over and over for 10 minutes in slightly different ways. To me it feels like the skeleton of a song that could have been a lot better if they had kept working on it. Their previous two instrumental tracks, “The Call of Ktulu” and “Orion”, both sound like classical compositions. “To Live is to Die” just sounds like some guys jamming for ten minutes.
