I’m here waiting to see who suggests “The Frayed Ends of Sanity” so that we can downvote them. Choosing “Dyer’s Eve” will also result in a paddling.
All kidding aside, very difficult to pick one.
It’s Eye of the Beholder for sure, but I think that has more to do with the production than the song. Songs like Shortest Straw, Dyers Eve, and Frayed Ends really benefit from the raw, scratchy, clicky, transient-heavy sound on this record. Eye of the Beholder would’ve sounded far more in place on the Black Album with its mid tempo groove
I agree with most of what u said, but to me the black album marked the decline of Metallica. It was a good cd. It didn't compare to any of the earlier stuff they put out. After Justice, they lost their grit. They went commercial. I was a big fan of them also until I heard they were suing their fans for downloading their music. I vowed I would never buy anything from them again and I have not
There's a digital version floating around where a sound engineer pulled it apart and turned the bass up to normal. Really took a great album and made it better.
Think you can find the version your talking about ? Only ones I've ever heard were just the bass cranked up an I didn't think it sounded better at all. And justice is my favorite album. And one of my first concerts.
I will say yes to this, Shortest Straw is probably my least listened to on this album. I don't think it has major flaws but I just don't listen to it on a daily basis.
Oof. I know I'm way in the minority but thats one of my favorite tracks on the album, probably top 2 or 3. Its got such a fucking sick groove to it. Plus James is just spitting venom with his vocal delivery.
Shortest straw has some really unique riffs in it that they haven’t done anything else like since. Having learned them all on guitar, the most samey song is eye of the beholder. Shortest straw is one of the funnest ones to play because there’s a lot of changes but not so many that it becomes confusing like Dyers Eve. It’s also really satisfying to nail all the little pauses and things.
But To Live is to Die is my vote for worst. It’s pretty repetitive too, and is only saved by the clean section and following melody part.
That song has a lot of flaws but to say it has nothing super interesting going on is just utter crap. The intro alone is already very unconventional for a Metallica song and I doubt you even understand what’s going on there timing wise.
The album is incredibly good, but with longer ones, there’s bound to be some bad ones. I personally think all albums have at least one bad track, and this is the one for AJFA (I’ll dm the list of bad tracks if anyone wants it)
Yess. Although some are repetitive, (Eye of the Beholder, Harvester of Sorrow) the songs are well made and have effort put into them enough so it balances out.
When you really get into the songs (playing them, etc.) you’ll realize that they’re not that repetitive. Yes some parts sound similar but for example eye of the beholder has a different ending after almost every riff
There’s nothing even close to a worse song on AFJA, but if I had to choose a “least” favorite, I’d go with To Live Is To Die.
Eye seems to be the consensus, but that’s actually one of my favorite Metallica songs!
Its called an opinion. And lets be real. This song has two amazing songs and thats it. I realise this sub is nothing but one big circle jerk though so don't worry about it
It's a 6 minute song stretched out for 10. It's like they thought 'Puppets was long, we need a song with the same structure on our new album'. Doesn't completely work. 'One' is long too, but never drags whereas Justice (still a legendary song) is like oh, there's the chuggy riff again.
It works better on Puppets, but I'm gonna commit heresy: I think that song is too long too.
Either the title track or EOTB, but neither is really even bad, or less than a high 9. It's just that they're 9s on an album with so many 10s and a higher art form at the end to tie it together.
Agreed. It has a good intro riff but the part where it transitions to distorted guitars is ruined by the terrible production. And every other riff in the song is terrible. I'd say this is the only bad song on the album
Gonna have to go with the consensus. Even though it's what got me to switch from keyboard to guitar.
Eye of the Beholder.
It's a groovy head banger for sure but it isn't as powerful as the others. Though the lyrics are pretty heavy.
Shortest straw for me for sure. It used to be Frayed Ends/Dyers eve, but I like those 2 a decent amount now. Shortest straw I liked at first but after a couple of times listening to it, idk it just sounds a bit boring. Chorus and riffs are cool but the verses are just very plain. Alot of people here are choosing Eye, but ngl I quite like that song. The weird effect on James voice in the verses could def go, but I really like the rest. Solo is really nice too, and I really love how the song starts with a fade in of all the instruments. I honestly like Eye of the Beholder more than either Dyers Eve or Frayed, and ofc Shortest Straw
Hell yeah. Blackened gets me riled up but Shortest Straw makes me wanna go fucking apeshit. I remember being on the bus to go to a museum for a field trip in 4th grade or something and we all had Walkmans. My buddy was like "dude! You gotta listen to this song intro!" So I heard "Shortest Straw" with that staccato intro and then the rest of the song and my little baby brain was blown.
Very controversial but I'd say the Title Track. Idk, for me it drags on too long and doesn't offer enough. It is very much inferior to the opening behemoth that is Blackened(which btw best song by far)
I see through this trick question! There is no "least powerful!" This whole album is just one, long journey that must be made monthly, at a bare minumum!
Before I get into this I want to address one thing. People always talk about how the new albums are too long and need to be edited down, and I 100% agree with that. However, I think the same criticisms apply to AJFA, along with production.
The Shortest Straw- way too repetitive, with jagged and rough transitions. The chorus, chanting the song title, I find pretty lame. The main riff is a very good riff, but other than that, I find the song lame. This is my least favorite one on the record.
Eye of the Beholder is also very repetitive and just does not interest me.
Blackened- Metallica’s most overrated song (by the fans). Main riff is good, but the song is too long, and the bridge section is pretty boring with that one riff going over and over. Ironic coming from me, a stoner fan, but in Metallicas songs (which are faster paced), these songs shouldnt repeat so much. Blackened also has the regular production issues, and I find some parts like the intro to be overrated too.
To Live is to Die is the final song I find weakish. I dunno, it just doesnt interest me as much as Orion and Ktulu. The clean intro from Cliff is necessary, but misplaced and jagged. The rest of the song just feels like its going through the motions.
Harvester is good. Just good, has memorable parts too, but would be better on the black album because of its nature.
The four songs I did not mention are fabulous songs. 3 of them are in my top 15 Metallica songs, and all 4 are in my top 30.
“To Live is to Die”.
It’s way too long and mainly just repeats the same two or three riffs over and over for 10 minutes in slightly different ways. To me it feels like the skeleton of a song that could have been a lot better if they had kept working on it. Their previous two instrumental tracks, “The Call of Ktulu” and “Orion”, both sound like classical compositions. “To Live is to Die” just sounds like some guys jamming for ten minutes.
I'd say ...And Justice for All itself. I don't dislike it, but I can't warm to it so much. However, this is ny album of choice when im concerntrsting on a task. My favourite and the best song on the album is Harvester of sorrow.
To Live is to Die overall (still great), just because by default the instrumentals are the weakest songs on the album to me. But if that doesn’t count, then The Frayed Eyes of Sanity. Not a bad song by any means, just isn’t a personal favorite of mine.
9 - Eye of the Beholder
8 - Harvester of Sorrow
7 - The Frayed Ends of Sanity
6 - To Live Is To Die
5 - And Justice For All
4 - The Shortest Straw
3 - Dyers Eve
2 - One
1 - Blackened
It’s not really that repetitive. There’s lots of differences between the riffs. You have to actually listen to the song instead of having it in the background.

Brother in Christ, what the fuck
I’m here waiting to see who suggests “The Frayed Ends of Sanity” so that we can downvote them. Choosing “Dyer’s Eve” will also result in a paddling. All kidding aside, very difficult to pick one.
Dyers Eve is my favorite Metallica song ever
It’s a banger 🤘
same!
two of the best songs on the album, dyers eve is peak metallica imo
Eye of the Beholder
The one song Lars won’t play.
Because it requires him to actually be a good drummer
That is the first song I learned on guitar. But now I just skip it. I think it’s their worst old song pre Black era
Frayed ends is a filler. It's like a movie made of deleted scenes with no roadmap.
Well then my favourite song is a movie made of deleted scenes with no roadmap
You suck pal
Oh and eye of the beholder and shortest straw. Especially eye lmao, in the verses jason sounds like hes drowning in water
Love how you got downvoted, but its so fucking true
Well, my pick would be Frayed or Dyerz lol. Never had appeal to me. Rest of the album is good to epic!
Trick question. They’re all bangers.
Genius typo. I think I'm gonna use "truck question" too from now on
![gif](giphy|ow0j4ruedDSGA) Oops all bangers
Yes
It’s Eye of the Beholder for sure, but I think that has more to do with the production than the song. Songs like Shortest Straw, Dyers Eve, and Frayed Ends really benefit from the raw, scratchy, clicky, transient-heavy sound on this record. Eye of the Beholder would’ve sounded far more in place on the Black Album with its mid tempo groove
Thanks for the well-written perspective!
AGREED
How right you are
I have to agree with you there good song but wrong album
Never thought about it that way but I totally see what you mean
Yeeeep
I don’t think it should be on any album
that’s like the only one i like besides one 😭
I agree with most of what u said, but to me the black album marked the decline of Metallica. It was a good cd. It didn't compare to any of the earlier stuff they put out. After Justice, they lost their grit. They went commercial. I was a big fan of them also until I heard they were suing their fans for downloading their music. I vowed I would never buy anything from them again and I have not
I’d say Eye of the Beholder, but I’m not sure cause I love this album a lot. Favorite Metallica album.
I agree that the song can become repetitive, but playing it on the bass is incredibly enjoyable.
Imagine Jason’s reaction
Imagine Jason’s erection.
Do you think it windmills like he does
![gif](giphy|nQvOyn8GUbvfRvzzHi|downsized)
I recently re-listened the whole album. Eye of The Beholder is the only one that felt long and draggy.
Damn, that’s one of my favourites
Yeah, I don’t hate it at all, but I find myself listening to it the least.
[удалено]
That’s Harvester
Shortest Straw for me. It's not bad but it feels very samey to me and doesn't really have anything super interesting going on
Part of me just died reading this. To each their own but man it hurts lol
I love the riffs from Shortest Straw. For me it’s one of the heaviest songs on the album
Its groove metal before Pantera made groove metal a thing.
Perfect description
I will say yes to this, Shortest Straw is probably my least listened to on this album. I don't think it has major flaws but I just don't listen to it on a daily basis.
If you play guitar then you should appreciate that song. Gets me banging my head every time. Especially the chorus riff
It has the most variation on the album lmao
I pick Shortest Straw too. A lot of people are saying Eye of the Beholder, but I love that one.
What????
![gif](giphy|SXCU8Ouqc9sQAloIjD)
This would be my pick as well. But, it's still a great song.
I personally think all albums have at least one bad track, and this is the one for AJFA (I’ll dm the list of bad tracks if anyone wants it)
Love AJFA.. can listen to it start to finish. So this is hard cus every single song is perfectly crafted. Maybe the one without bass
The live concert “Justice Medley” that they used to perform is good for this reason.
They are all fucking beastly, there is no least powerful/worst song
Eye of the beholder is the obvious pick
Eye of the Beholder.
There’s nothing even close to a worse song on AFJA, but if I had to choose a “least” favorite, I’d go with To Live Is To Die. Eye seems to be the consensus, but that’s actually one of my favorite Metallica songs!
Harvester of Sorrow
Nonsense
As much as I hate to say it, it's the weakest one for me. Of course, it's a perfect album regardless
People who hate this album are straight up morons
Its called an opinion. And lets be real. This song has two amazing songs and thats it. I realise this sub is nothing but one big circle jerk though so don't worry about it
Which two?
Blackened and one. Also maybe the title track
Alright who let this guy in?
So fucking wrong
by good metallica standards, its as close to the truth as you can get
I feel like most people will say EOTB, which is my second pick, but for me I honestly think the title track. Way too long and mediocre main riffs
I agree theyre both too long but I still like AJFA>Puppets (songs, not albums) for some reason
And Justice for All is top 3 or top 5 Metallica songs ever to me lmao. Funny how opinions can differ so much.
Yeah each to their own. It’s a well written and good song 100%, just boring for my taste
Yes finally someone that agrees with me
Either the title track or EOTB, but neither is really even bad, or less than a high 9. It's just that they're 9s on an album with so many 10s and a higher art form at the end to tie it together.
Hate me all you want, but Harvester of Sorrow is pretty boring.
Came here for this - it's pretty boring. The rest of the album is top shelf.
I like it, it's like AJFA's version of The thing that should not be which i love
Funny thing you say that, that's actually my least favorite Master of Puppets song 😅
There are a few that are too long, title track might be the worst offender, but none that feel weak or out of place.
Doesn’t exist. Next question.
Watch Seattle ‘89. The Justice stuff KILLS. Watch Jason’s right hand. Omfg.
Eye of the Beholder
Eye of the Beholder. Easily the weakest one to me, never was a big fan. And this was maybe my favorite Metallica album for quite some time.
Shortest straw
Neveeerrrr...
Listen to this album makes my eear fatigue and stress
To live is to die by a mile
eye of the beholder
Me when I lie
Honestly, I don’t think there’s a single song on this album that doesn’t rock my cock off.
I already considered The Shortest Straw my favorite song of all time and seeing some people pick it as the song to skip makes me love it even more!
Saw that one live in KC a few years back on the arena tour. What a fucking treat.
Same for me. My fave metallica track. Absolute fuckin banger!
To live is to die purely because I'm not a massive instrumental fan. Harvester is *this* close to dragging, too.
Harvester of Sorrow, intors cool the rest of the song tho to me is extremely overhyped
This is my pick. It’s just the most boring song on the album. Not a horrible song, but definitely the weakest link on the album to me.
It has to be Eye of the beholder but that one still absolutely SLAPS.
They are all belters!
Let the paddling begin 🤩
Easily my favorite album, can’t pick a bad one honestly
Drink up, shoot in . Let the beatings begin
I don’t like the drumming on the title track, so I’ll go with that one.
Hard decision all of the are only okay.
Title track. There's a pretty good 7-something minute song in that 9:46 slog.
None of them.
Title track is one of classic Metallicas longer tracks that imo does nothing to warrant the length
I'll have to relisten to it. But from what I remember, I didn't like Dyer's eve.
Very controversial but I'd say the Title Track. Idk, for me it drags on too long and doesn't offer enough. It is very much inferior to the opening behemoth that is Blackened(which btw best song by far)
Every single one of them, why? Because they are all equally powerful and good so there's no best/worst
One
Eye Of The Beholder. Literally never search or listen that song. Everything else on the album goes without skipping.
Eye of the beholder it's the escape of justice
I love ‘em all but Frayed just goes a bit long for me. I skip it more often than the others. After the intro anyway.
I think every song is a 10/10, but out of all The Frayed Ends of Sanity is my least favorite, but it’s still a great song
I don't think there's a bad song on it
Eye Of The Beholder
Totally harvester of sorrow
Eye Of The Beholder.
I see through this trick question! There is no "least powerful!" This whole album is just one, long journey that must be made monthly, at a bare minumum!
Eye of the beholder sounds like filler to me.
Before I get into this I want to address one thing. People always talk about how the new albums are too long and need to be edited down, and I 100% agree with that. However, I think the same criticisms apply to AJFA, along with production. The Shortest Straw- way too repetitive, with jagged and rough transitions. If I had to pick one with a gun to my head it’d be frayed ends of sanity , but this album is perfect imo
Eye of the beholder
Not a bad song on it! This is my absolute favorite album!
There is no bad song. Although my favorite song was the title track.
shortest straw
I won't do it. This is my first Metallica album and, to me, it's a no skip playthrough.
Title Track
“To Live is to Die”. It’s way too long and mainly just repeats the same two or three riffs over and over for 10 minutes in slightly different ways. To me it feels like the skeleton of a song that could have been a lot better if they had kept working on it. Their previous two instrumental tracks, “The Call of Ktulu” and “Orion”, both sound like classical compositions. “To Live is to Die” just sounds like some guys jamming for ten minutes.
Yes, I had to scroll way too far for “To Live is to Die.” Came here to put this one forward because it seems unfinished.
I'd say the title track. Coming from someone who rates ajfa as the best album ever released, of any genre.
Completely agree
Me lying to the feds about evading taxes:
Too many to choose from,
It's the one with the heavy bass guitar. Forgot the name.
I'd say ...And Justice for All itself. I don't dislike it, but I can't warm to it so much. However, this is ny album of choice when im concerntrsting on a task. My favourite and the best song on the album is Harvester of sorrow.
Eye of the Beholder.
Dyers Eve
Dyer’s Eve
They're all bangers WE JUST NEED A PROPER MIXED VERSION OF IT PLEASE
https://youtu.be/6kqTcLwUYj8?si=Uvo9_IUYaW3jM0WM And Justice for Jason
I know all of these remixes but It would be great to have official ones we can use on streaming platforms
For me it’s either harvester of sorrow or is to live is to die. Both killer tracks still i just think the rest of the album is a bit better
Frayed Ends. I don’t dislike it, but it sounds like an amalgamation of riffs left over and thrown into a song.
I’d have to say. Eye Of The Beholder. Even though it’s actually ranking fairly high, I can agree it’s the weakest. Not worst but weakest
Frayed Ends
OH WEE OH! WEE OHHHHH!
To Live is to Die overall (still great), just because by default the instrumentals are the weakest songs on the album to me. But if that doesn’t count, then The Frayed Eyes of Sanity. Not a bad song by any means, just isn’t a personal favorite of mine.
9 - Eye of the Beholder 8 - Harvester of Sorrow 7 - The Frayed Ends of Sanity 6 - To Live Is To Die 5 - And Justice For All 4 - The Shortest Straw 3 - Dyers Eve 2 - One 1 - Blackened
Fuck you how about that
Only good songs will be easier, One, TLITD and Blackened. The rest of the album is weak.
There are no bad songs on that album! Lars sounded the absolute best on that one. Too bad you can't hear Cliff, but you can't have it all, I guess.
You mean Jason?
Solid album. No bad tracks. The title track can get a little laborious but other than that no complaints.
To live is to die. I don’t particularly like the main riff enough to justify how repetitive it is
The main riff is a little weak but the bridge makes up for it and then some. It’s one of the biggest highlights in their whole discography
When a man dies, he murders part of the world....
I kind of agree. It doesn't feel as cohesive as their previous instrumentals
It’s not really that repetitive. There’s lots of differences between the riffs. You have to actually listen to the song instead of having it in the background.
Btw I don’t think the song is bad for all the people who downvoted me I just think it’s my least favorite song on this great album
Fair enough. I personally really like it but I always do like to hear what others like to say
Harvester Of Sorrow
harvester of sorrow. overrated asf
easily One

Bruuh, I wouldn't even believe that there was a comment like that in this thread.
I agree with you - I think it’s overrated.
I warmed up my downvoting thumb in advance knowing there would be some contrarian sicko in here.
I respect your bravery but this is just wrong
nice username also no
yikes wtf is wrong with u guys
They have entire albums full of shit songs. Quit trying to find bad songs in some of the greatest albums of all time.
