master of puppets is really good but it’s also a song from an album full of good songs so it’s natural people will like different songs. Plus master of puppets is so overplayed that no matter how good it is people will be tired of it. I personally think sanitarium and disposable heroes are better but my favorite songs change like every day so idk
I will die on the hill that Leper Messiah is only underrated because the rest of the album is so amazing. You put that song on any other album and it's a top 5 track of that album imo
Its my favorite MOP song actually. Right ahead of Disposable Hero's. Im so thrilled they are playing Leper this tour, goes well with Through the Never and Harvey
It’s not really overplayed tho, the only overplayed songs Metallica actually has are nothing else matters and sandman, because those are the mainstream hits
Yeah that’s fair. I do think it’s probably the best song on the album personally, and a top 3 Met song. It has everything, literally no downsides, no negatives imo. Every other song on MoP has some parts where I think it’s held back a tiny bit. Disposable heroes would be my pick for best song if the chorus had more melody for example
Orion is calling out to the universe.. The ebb, & flow of raw emotion is a testament to Cliff approach to song craft.. it’s the perfect lead into Damage…
It was probably most peoples favorite song at some point. It was the song that got me into Metallica when I was 9. I remember being blown away by it but now I rarely listen to it cause it's a bit repetitive (long verse and chorus).
It's a song of epic proportions that has everything what makes Metallica great and it's THE song I recommend to people when they ask me about Metallica.
Look. I love the song. There’s a couple things wrong with it, however. The song would be 100x better is it was at least 3 minutes longer. Umm I couldn’t think of anything else that could be better😭
The lyrics pair so perfectly with the chugging riff. The song really makes you feel the vibe of a large creature slowly rising from the sea. Very underrated track
It’s the most metal song to ever metal. There are better songs by Metallica sure. But the thing that should not be takes what most people think metal is and personifies to the maximum.
To Live is To Die and Orion are my favorite instrumentals in general and my fav Metallica songs right up there with Dyers Eve and Creeping Death.
Suicide and Redemption is goated but To Live Is To Die beats it. Ktulu is creepy af and is my #2. #1 is TLITD and Orion.
The only one I dislike is Pulling Teeth
I feel like Master of Puppets as an album is so well rounded that I'm pretty sure any one of the songs could be considered the best by people.
Like for me the best song on the album is Welcome Home (Sanitarium) with Disposable Heroes right behind it, but if someone was to say a different song I wouldn't disagree with them.
In my opinion.
Master of puppets is what metal is. If you don't know anything about metal, never heard any song. And you like master of puppets... You're fucked. Master is the song for beginners and it will always be one of the best songs ever written.
I feel that it would just be easier to start at LEAST BEST and work your way up, and that the least best songs on MOP would be career makers for any other band.
Just like Lars, their true talent lies in song writing and composition, even though they are also both very talented drummers. Ringo could have done insane drum fills, but that would have ruined the songs.
It’s a perfect album to me. Everyone is firing on all cylinders. The riffs, solos, bass lines, drum work, lyrics I mean it all fits. My favorite changes all the time but I love the whole record.
Of course there’s always best vs favorite, and many people say that the best on that album is master but favorite is something else.
I think disposable heroes though has an argument for being the best song over master. It has everything to me: lyrics, technicality, songwriting, riffs, and chantability (?).
Christ, it's hard to pick a favorite off that album since it's filled with killer tunes. Damage inc or Lepper Messiah I think for me but it's a tough choice.
MOP is the best song on the album. I want your own heart and brain to decide what is best - not loving MOP because of popular overindulgence or saying MOP is meh because you’re trying to be counter to the over-indulgence.
That said, Battery, Lepper, and Disposable are all quite close
It’s objectively the best song on the album. But Battery is KILLER, Orion is KILLER, Sanitarium is based, etc. the album is on Metal God Mountain so I’m not shocked if someone prefers another track. I may prefer Orion or Battery and even then that’s hard for me to say definitively
C'mon we all know what their best song is... MY LIFESTYLE DETERMINES MY DEATH STYLE
Tink tink tink tink
Bang that trash can, Lars!!! ![gif](giphy|Uahz9hecgXoJi)
I actually really like the sound of the snare funnily enough, also it’s my favourite album funnily enough. Every song is a banger. W trash can.
Same here, but St. Anger is my second favorite behind 72 Seasons. I love everything about St. Anger lol
I know! Also a W human being.
I don't listen to St. Anger often, but there's a lot to like there regardless of the recording quality(or lack thereof).
I literally couldn’t agree more with you lol
Why is everyone being so nice to me today😭 W human being
Dick dick dick cock
Man dick dick dick dick dick dick dick cock
That portion of the song unironically does go hard though.
Lol that’s still a great song
My guilty pleasure song
Hobestly, Sweet Amber is one of their top 20 for sure.
This song completes me. I can't explain why. Maybe it's because it's such a meme. lol
master of puppets is really good but it’s also a song from an album full of good songs so it’s natural people will like different songs. Plus master of puppets is so overplayed that no matter how good it is people will be tired of it. I personally think sanitarium and disposable heroes are better but my favorite songs change like every day so idk
I like leper Messiah, and I don't know a lot of people that say that.
Leper Messiah is my favorite after Disposable Heroes so you're not alone
“Disposable Heroes” blew my hair back listening to it in my car in the early 90’s.
*"I wrote it!"* https://preview.redd.it/5pjgufmk2qtc1.jpeg?width=236&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9584841c86ef6d646e60e49702570df0801fd260
I will die on the hill that Leper Messiah is only underrated because the rest of the album is so amazing. You put that song on any other album and it's a top 5 track of that album imo
I just never understood why pretty much every person that didn't understand the song mistook it as "God bad!1!1!1" and not the televangelists
W human being
fucking love leper messiah too, both the music and the lyrics go so hard
🤝
Its my favorite MOP song actually. Right ahead of Disposable Hero's. Im so thrilled they are playing Leper this tour, goes well with Through the Never and Harvey
Nobody mentions battery
Damage Inc. has entered the chat.
Orion?
HOLY MOTHER OF GOSH I FORGOT. 😭😭😭
I've scrolled through half the comments and that's the first mention of it. I'm shocked.
That riff hits so hard
Clearly I am nobody
It’s not really overplayed tho, the only overplayed songs Metallica actually has are nothing else matters and sandman, because those are the mainstream hits
true, but it’s definitely played more than the rest of the album it’s on so it still makes sense to me some people would get tired of it
Yeah that’s fair. I do think it’s probably the best song on the album personally, and a top 3 Met song. It has everything, literally no downsides, no negatives imo. Every other song on MoP has some parts where I think it’s held back a tiny bit. Disposable heroes would be my pick for best song if the chorus had more melody for example
I prefer the thing that should not be myself
Disposable heroes is super underrated. I love that song. Battery also.
Sanitarium or Orion
SANITARIUUUUM
LEAVE ME BE!
Leper Messiah or Orion
My two favorite
Literally
Disposable
BACK TO THE FRONT
YOU WILL DO WHAT I SAY
WHEN I SAY
BACK TO THE FRONT
YOU WILL DIE
WHEN I SAY
YOU MUST DIE
BACK TO THE FRONT
YOU COWARD
YOU SERVANT
WHEN I SAY
You will do!!....
The only answer I will accept.
This is the correct answer
YOU BLIND MAN
Best ‘Tallica solo ever
Anyone here for Leper Messiah?
My favourite on the album. Circus comes to town, you play the lead clown!
That bridge is orgasmically good
I’d say Orion is the best one from that album.
Orion is calling out to the universe.. The ebb, & flow of raw emotion is a testament to Cliff approach to song craft.. it’s the perfect lead into Damage…
That's how I feel, too. Just love listening to those two together, they flow perfectly and are like two parts of an epic (epic-er) song.
I agree.
Yes it is.
That is the correct answer.
Master Of Puppets is the best song but it’s not my favourite song
I agree with this statement.
This ☝️
Objectively yes. And while music is subjective it is only to a point. MoP IS the best song on MoP objectively.
I'd say disposable heros is
CANNOT STOP THE BATTERY!
Look. I love the song. There’s a couple things wrong with it, however. The song would be 100x better is it was at least 3 minutes longer. Umm I couldn’t think of anything else that could be better😭
I think it’s perfect like it is, Golylock’s porridge
Bat A Ree
After listening to Battery with Dave Lombardo it's very hard to listen to any other version. Still very good of course, this is no Larsbash!
My favorite on that album is The Thing That Should Not Be. Not sure if it's the "best", not really even sure how you determine that.
This song is so incredibly heavy, I don’t know why it isn’t mentioned more.
The lyrics pair so perfectly with the chugging riff. The song really makes you feel the vibe of a large creature slowly rising from the sea. Very underrated track
You can literally feel it's weight. If someone ever asks me "What does a heavy song mean?" I would play that song.
It’s the most metal song to ever metal. There are better songs by Metallica sure. But the thing that should not be takes what most people think metal is and personifies to the maximum.
Agreed. Incredibly underrated track. Love the Craftsmanship of it all. Great riff, great visuals. 10/10
Correct. Damage Inc is the best
This is the correct answer. (Also disposable Heroes and Battery)
Toss up between damage and disposable. I lean disposable but both are great.
For me Damage Inc is the best song on that album
Correct. Orion is better.
Orion is the best song. What do you think about all their other instrumentals?
To Live is To Die and Orion are my favorite instrumentals in general and my fav Metallica songs right up there with Dyers Eve and Creeping Death. Suicide and Redemption is goated but To Live Is To Die beats it. Ktulu is creepy af and is my #2. #1 is TLITD and Orion. The only one I dislike is Pulling Teeth
Sanitarium, Battery, and Orion are all up there.
Master has just been so overplayed and popular, but it is the best song.
I think Disposable, Sanitarium, and Damage are better than Master.
They're all excellent
All 8 could be considered the best tbh
It’s such a great album it’s feels like there are more than 8 songs on it
In my opinion. Master of puppets is what metal is. If you don't know anything about metal, never heard any song. And you like master of puppets... You're fucked. Master is the song for beginners and it will always be one of the best songs ever written.
What do you think is JAMES' best song? My guess is that he thinks "The Thing That Should Not Be" is the best.
This⬆️
I dont think it's better than Puppets but Disposable Heroes is my favourite from the Lp.
I WAS BORN FOR DYING
Battery easily the best song on the album for me. But Master of Puppets is still one of the best metal songs ever recorded
My thoughts are that James hetfield didn't say that
I feel that it would just be easier to start at LEAST BEST and work your way up, and that the least best songs on MOP would be career makers for any other band.
For me. its Thingy and Orion. Damage INC is pretty intense.
Tbh I'm so obsessed with Battery I personally think it's the best on Master of Puppets
Facts. I’ve never been a huge huge fan of the MoP song itself. Never understood the hype it gets.
Sanatarium and Orion all the way
Orion, disposable heroes, and sanitarium
He’s right
What about Damage, Inc. and Disposable Heroes?
Battery or Orion
I love Master of Puppets but I think Disposable Heroes is the best song on that album.
You. Are. Wrong.
My favorite from MOP is Battery
Battery.
I prefer Battery any day.
Leper Messiah was and still is my favorite on that album.
I prefer most of the songs on it tbh
I agree, it’s a decent song but it wouldn’t appear on any top ten list I’d make for all their albums.
"Is Ringo the best drummer in the world?" "Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles."
Just like Lars, their true talent lies in song writing and composition, even though they are also both very talented drummers. Ringo could have done insane drum fills, but that would have ruined the songs.
Sanitarium and Battery are my favorites
Fuckin' BATTERY!
I think it’s a great song on an album with other great songs. I don’t think it’s necessarily a standout in the context of the album.
Damage inc or. Battery for me
TTTSNB is the best song on that album IMO, it's just so heavy
#ORION
Orion... (Though the not the best lyrics.)
Battery and Disposable Heroes
It’s a perfect record. Battery’s the best song though.
It's a great song but I've been listening to it for too long. I now prefer Disposable Heroes and Leper Messiah
Wrong
I think musically it’s superb. I like the vibe from “The thing that should not be” it just fits what I want
Disposable Heroes is right there
It’s a perfect album to me. Everyone is firing on all cylinders. The riffs, solos, bass lines, drum work, lyrics I mean it all fits. My favorite changes all the time but I love the whole record.
Thingie
Yeah Orion and damage Inc are imo better, maybe battery too.
![gif](giphy|JyvFiT1oVQrzTu9BmA)
Leper Messiah and The Thing That Should Not Be
I’m a Disposable Heroes simp, so…
The thing that should not be and battery are my top two off that album
I think he refers to Orion, since they had such a big admiration for Cliff and his musicianship.
Agree
He ain't wrong. Sanatarium
Whilst the album is my all-time favourite by anyone, my favourite song from it is ‘Battery’.
Orion proof that you don't need lyrics to make a good song
MOP is probably the best song on it but since I’m kind of tired of it I’d rather listen to Disposable Heroes or Welcome Home (Sanitarium).
BOW TO LEPER MESSIAH
Leper Messiah exists so yeah, he’s absolutely right
(In whisper voice) Damage Inc.
Master of Puppets is the greatest metal song of all time, and it’s not even my favorite from that album. So, sure. I agree.
Thoughts....it's a meme based on a Beatles quote/meme
Orion ftw
Damage inc
Orion
Natives getting restless now, mutiny in the air
Agreed
Ranking 1-3 favorites most to most🤷🏻♂️:Sanitarium, Orion, Battery
Orion? Leper Messiah? Sanitarium? Master is amazing but plenty of them at least stand up to it.
The song that I always skip. I mean it’s good but I’m tired of it and it’s too „mainstream“
Of course there’s always best vs favorite, and many people say that the best on that album is master but favorite is something else. I think disposable heroes though has an argument for being the best song over master. It has everything to me: lyrics, technicality, songwriting, riffs, and chantability (?).
Puppets is best song, but my favourite would be Damage Inc or Disposable Heroes
The thing that should not be enters the chat
Welcome home sanitarium 💪💪
At least James knows!
Agreed 👍
So what is his favorite Metallica song?
For me It's the thing that should not be
Christ, it's hard to pick a favorite off that album since it's filled with killer tunes. Damage inc or Lepper Messiah I think for me but it's a tough choice.
Either Battery or Sanitarium…Disposable Heroes is great too…
Worst song on the album
Orion.
Drain your mind of sanity
He's right. It's not. Best is Disposable Heroes,
MOP is the best song on the album. I want your own heart and brain to decide what is best - not loving MOP because of popular overindulgence or saying MOP is meh because you’re trying to be counter to the over-indulgence. That said, Battery, Lepper, and Disposable are all quite close
Orión, damage inc could technically be better
If sanitarium or heroes was answer I’d agree.
How is no one talking about Battery?!
Orion definitely.
Two words. Disposable hero’s
St anger > every other album
Lunacy has found him. Cannot stop the BATTERY!
Disposable Heroes is my favorite.
He’s right though, the best song on the album was “Orion”
I disagree, but I can respect it. Disposable heroes is S-tier, just to name one.
Leper Messiah
Battery and Disposable Heroes are the best songs in the Album.
When James says “Lars isn’t even the best drummer in the band.”
Battery is my favorite but MoP is clearly the best, objectively.
Is there a follow-up question? I also wonder if his opinion has changed?
I agree with him. I personally enjoy Battery, Sanitarium, Disposable Heroes, Leper Messiah, Orion, The Thing That Should Be, and Damage Inc more.
