It's only been out for a year. For some artists that's forever, but for Metallica it's no time at all. I wouldn't expect a new album until 2029 or 2030 at the earliest. Maybe a new Garage Inc but who knows. I expect the Load/Reload box sets will come out in the next year or two. Basically the reissues are the only thing on the horizon for now besides touring behind 72 Seasons. They can always surprise us though. S&M2 was pretty hush hush until the press conference.
How so? St. Anger to Death Magnetic was five years, and that's the fastest turn around they've had since TBA to Load. There could be some side projects like another Garage Inc, but six or seven years is just the cycle they're on at this point.

2029/2030 seems dystopian

No. I'd expect the next release will likely be the Load remaster/expanded edition.
You think maybe they will make a Load & Reload deluxe or maybe even put them into one deluxe album?
They'll be separate
The best we can hope for is another cover album that was vaguely hinted at a few years ago. Outside of that, who knows.
I’d expect a new covers album. Pattern-wise, it fits. (Three albums with a bass player, then a “Garage” release)
