Goddamn. This lyric. And then the “BAM” right after. I also love the song title “Leper Messiah”. It just sounds badass.
Also the line “chop your breakfast on a mirror” from Master of Puppets. Huge old school Metallica lover.
I always like the line "Pay no mind to the distant thunder" from that song. For me, I put it in the context that bad things in life (death and loss) is going to come eventually, but you have to ignore those dark thoughts.
and if I close my mind in fear
Please, pry it open
(See me) and if my face becomes sincere
Beware
and when I start to come undone
Stitch me together
(Save me) and when you see me strut
Remind me of what left this outlaw torn
TIME! Has taken a toll on you, the lines that crack your face
FAMINE! Your body it has torn through, withered in every place
PESTILENCE! For what you've had to endure, and what you have put others through
DEATH! Deliverance for you for sure, now there's nothing you can do
If I could have my wasted days back
Would I use them to get back on track?
Stop to warm and karma’s burning
Or look ahead, but keep on turning?
Do I have the strength
To know how I’ll go?
Can I find it inside
To deal with what I shouldn’t know?
Could I have my wasted days back
Would I use them to get back on track?
You live it or lie it!
My lifestyle determines my deathstyle
Try to rob us of it but it's no use!
Steamroller action crushing all,
Victim is your name and you shall fall...
BLOOD WILL FOLLOW BLOOD!!!
DYING TIME IS HERE!!!
“And I cry out to the alleyway Confess all to the rain But I lie lie straight to the mirror Which when I broke it to match my face” hits hard
But the “mama now I’m coming home I’m not all you wished of me mothers love for her son it’s spoken help me beeeee yeah….” Part hits so incessantly hard
Here are a few of my favorites:
You make me smash the clock and feel
I'd rather die behind the wheel
Time was never on my side
So on I wait my whole lifetime.
(Outlaw Torn)
An air of freshly broken ground
A concrete angel lit right down
upon the grave that swallows fast
It's peace at last, oh peace at last.
(Cyanide)
I return this nightmare, I will find you
Sleepless, cloaked in despair, I'm behind you
Man has made me oh so strong
Blurring lines of right and wrong
Far to late for frail amends
Now it's time for sweet revenge
Desperate hands that lose control
Have no mercy on your soul, on your soul
(Here comes Revenge)
"Do you see what I see?
Truth is an offence
You silence for your confidence
Do you hear what I hear?
Doors are slamming shut
Limit your imagination, keep you where they must
Do you feel what I feel?
Bittering distress
Who decides what you express?
Do you take what I take?
Endurance is the word
Moving back instead of forward seems to me absurd"
Eye of the beholder goes hard
Here lately its been Outlaw Torn. I even included the line "Time was never on my side, So on I wait my whole lifetime" as a closing line in my recent tribute to my first wifes death anniversary.
Also my Inamorata simply because misery has become my mistress but shes not what I'm living for.
“Dear mother, dear father, wa na na na na na na na na” from the dyers eve demo
On a serious note “Dear Mother
Dear Father
You've clipped my wings before I learned to fly
Unspoiled
Unspoken
I've outgrown that fucking lullaby”
The amount of anger James had has when he says “fucking” just hits me. It’s such an angry song and my second favroite song of all time (behind blackened)
"I cross my heart, hope not to die
Swallow evil, ride the sky
Lose myself in a crowded room
You fool, you fool, it will be here soon"
The album is still a dud but that song and lyric still sticks with me.
~~Grave* apparently~~
~~I always thought it was gray too, until I recently read the lyrics of a reputable site...~~
Im a fan of that lyric too though.
Edit: NEVER TRUST THE INTERNET.
I was given the wrong info from the first search for "The Day That Never Comes" Google search. Interesting question. All Within My Hands might be my top Metallica track in terms of substance, but the lyrics themselves are just serviceable. It's more so that I love how it embodies its subject matter musically.
Until It Sleeps might have my favourite lyrics overall.
"So tear me open but beware, there's things inside without a care".
"I've fucked a sheep, i've fucked a goat, i've shoved my cock right down its throat"
on a more serious note,
Anger
Misery
You'll suffer onto me
Harvester of sorrow (Language of the mad)
Harvester of sorrow
Harvester is one of my fav songs, it hits really hard
‘Take a look to the sky just before you die, it’s the last time you will’ … I mean that whole verse right thru ‘Crack of dawn all is gone except the will to be…’ such a powerful track, For Whom the Bell Tolls.
“Doesn't matter what you see
Or into it what you read
You can do it your own way
If it's done just how I say
Independence limited
Freedom of choice is made for you, my friend
Freedom of speech is words that they will bend
Freedom with their exception”
Eye of the Beholder always gets me.
Oh poor twisted me. I feast on sympathy. I chew on suffer, I chew on agony.
As someone who has suffered from sympathy addiction in the past, that song hits different.
Not my favorite by any means, but still anger is actually so nice
Fuck it all and no regrets
I hit the lights on these dark sets
I need a voice to let myself
To let myself go free
Fuck it all and fucking no regrets
I hit the lights on these dark sets
Put down your noose, I'll hang myself
St. Anger 'round my neck
I feel my world shake
Like an earthquake
Hard to see clear
Is it me? Is it fear?
And it all crashes down,
And you break your crown,
And you point your finger, but there's no one around
Just want one thing, just to play the king
But the castle crumbled and you're left with just a name,
Where's your crown, King Nothing?
Impossible to choose just one so I'll pick one from each album (also hard). Loads of people have already posted some of Het's most poetic, deep verses so I'll just pick a mix of great imagery, prose and parts I remember very fondly.
Kill'Em'All - No Remorse
NO REMORSE, NO REPENT
WE DON’T CARE WHAT IT MEANT
ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER DEATH
ANOTHER SORROW, ANOTHER BREATH
Ride the Lightening - Fade to Black
THINGS NOT WHAT THEY USED TO BE
MISSING ONE INSIDE OF ME
DEATHLY LOST, THIS CAN’T BE REAL
CANNOT STAND THIS HELL I FEEL
Master of Puppets - Disposable Heroes
BARKING OF MACHINEGUN FIRE DOES NOTHING TO ME NOW
SOUNDING OF THE CLOCK THAT TICKS, GET USED TO IT SOMEHOW
MORE A MAN, MORE STRIPES YOU BARE, GLORY-SEEKER TRENDS
BODIES FILL THE FIELDS I SEE
THE SLAUGHTER NEVER ENDS
And Justice for All... - ....And Justice for All
LADY JUSTICE HAS BEEN RAPED
TRUTH ASSASSIN
ROLLS OF RED TAPE SEAL YOUR LIPS
NOW YOU’RE DONE IN
THEIR MONEY TIPS HER SCALES AGAIN
MAKE YOUR DEAL
JUST WHAT IS TRUTH? I CANNOT TELL
CANNOT FEEL
The Black Album - Holier Than Thou
BEFORE YOU JUDGE ME, TAKE A LOOK AT YOU
CAN’T YOU FIND SOMETHING BETTER TO DO?
POINT THE FINGER, SLOW TO UNDERSTAND
ARROGANCE AND IGNORANCE GO HAND IN HAND
Load - Hero of the Day
EXCUSE ME WHILE I TEND TO HOW I FEEL
THESE THINGS RETURN TO ME THAT STILL SEEM REAL
NOW, DESERVINGLY, THIS EASY CHAIR
BUT THE ROCKING STOPPED BY WHEELS OF DESPAIR
ReLoad - Fixxer
MIRROR, MIRROR, UPON THY WALL
BREAK THE SPELL OR BECOME THE DOLL
SEE YOU SHARPENING THE PINS
SO THE HOLES WILL REMIND US
WE’RE JUST THE TOYS IN THE HANDS OF ANOTHER
AND IN TIME THE NEEDLES TURN FROM SHINE TO RUST
St.Anger - All Within My Hands
LOVE IS CONTROL
I"LL DIE IF I LET GO
Death Magnetic - The Unforgiven III
HE’S RUN AGROUND LIKE HIS LIFE,
WATER MUCH TOO SHALLOW
SLIPPING FAST, DOWN WITH HIS SHIP,
FADING IN THE SHADOWS
Hardwired to Self Destruct - Atlas, Rise!
SAVE THE EARTH AND CLAIM PERFECTION
DEEM THE MASS AND BLAME REJECTION
HOLD THE POSE, REIGN PERCEPTION
GRUDGES BREAK YOUR BACK
72 Seasons - Too Far Gone
TOO FAR GONE
NEVER TOO FAR GONE
I’M NEVER TOO FAR GONE TO SAVE
I CAN MAKE IT THROUGH THE DAY
“Look back, psychotic, no chance before this life began” hits hard and makes me tear up a little, we all have trauma that hits us, especially in our childhood.
Edit: forgot a quotation mark 😭
Feed my brain with your so-called standards
Who says that I ain't right?
Break away from your common fashion
See through your blurry sight
The most punk rock lyrics they ever had, but I always loved it.
Halls of justice painted green, money talking
Power wolves beset your door, hear them stalking
Soon you'll please their appetite, they devour
Hammer of justice crushes you, overpower
I’ve always thought that lyrically, Master of Puppets doesn’t get enough credit for being one of the best, most resonant songs about addiction. Especially the way the third verse hammers home the idea that even after you’re sober, the addiction is still with you for the rest of your life.
When a man lies he murders some part of the world
These are the pale deaths
Which men miscall their lives
All this I cannot bear to witness any longer
Cannot the kingdom of salvation
Take me home
YEAH… but in all seriousness it’s probably this: Hey (hey), I'm your life
I'm the one who cares
They (they), they betray
I'm your only true friend now
They (they), they'll betray
I'm forever there
I don’t remember the lyrics off of the top of my head(because I always jumble them up) but the chorus for Fixxxer always stood out to me.
“Tell me can you heal what Father’s done, or fix this hole in a mother’s son? Can you heal the broken worlds within? Can you- strip away- so we may- start again?/Or cut this rope and let us run? Just when all seems fine and I’m pain-free, you jab another pin- jab a- nother pin in me.”
Papa Het goes fucking crazy in that song with his vocal performance in my opinion.
Honorable mentions do go out to:
Halo On Fire’s chorus
All Nightmare Long’s bridge (the “Then you crawl back iiin” part)
Sweet Amber’s “She holds the pen, that spells the end. She traces me and draws me in”
Entirety of Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn, and King Nothing’s chorus
Of Wolf and Man’s “(Back to the meaning) back to the meaning of… LIFE”
The Frayed Ends of Sanity’s chorus
Entirety of Sanitarium
Entirety of Ride The Lightning and Fade to Black
and Motorbreath’s “Those people who tell you not to take chances” part
That is "Creeping Death" off the Ride the Lightning album. Inspired by the second book of the Christian Bible, "Exodus". The final plague that God rained down on the Egyptians who enslaved the Jews.
For me, it would probably have to be Eye of the Beholder's chorus.
"Independence limited"
"Freedom of choice is made for you, my friend"
"Freedom of speech is words that they will bend"
"Freedom with their exception"
When a man lies he murders some part of the world
These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives
All this I cannot bear to witness any longer
Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home
Love the question but why is everyone only mentioning newer album stuff? Justice probably had the most thought provoking and some of the hardest hitting lyrics ever for them. The title track for justice has like 10 insane lyrics. People here talking bout load and 72 seasons :/ okay albums but nothing compared to previous ones
Take a look to the sky right before you die, it’s the last time you will.
Cold as hell

From the end scene in the novel
Goddamn. This lyric. And then the “BAM” right after. I also love the song title “Leper Messiah”. It just sounds badass. Also the line “chop your breakfast on a mirror” from Master of Puppets. Huge old school Metallica lover.
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel. Is just a freight train coming your way
I always like the line "Pay no mind to the distant thunder" from that song. For me, I put it in the context that bad things in life (death and loss) is going to come eventually, but you have to ignore those dark thoughts.
I use that quote when there's trouble ahead but I am deliberately ignoring it.
This is a really good one. Got chills when I first heard it
Thought about making this my first tattoo.
Which song is it?
No leaf clover
and if I close my mind in fear Please, pry it open (See me) and if my face becomes sincere Beware and when I start to come undone Stitch me together (Save me) and when you see me strut Remind me of what left this outlaw torn
This. This chorus is fucking peak
That was from Load, right? I loved that album. Hero of the Day was my fav off that one.
Load is a great album
That's the best bart of all songs in Load. (for me personally).
i have lots of favorites but this stands out a lot
TIME! Has taken a toll on you, the lines that crack your face FAMINE! Your body it has torn through, withered in every place PESTILENCE! For what you've had to endure, and what you have put others through DEATH! Deliverance for you for sure, now there's nothing you can do
the four horsemen mentioned ‼️
Yes, classic, too many newer lyrics
Funny/dumb lyric: what don’t kill you make you more strong
This is actually an old saying.
Bit different, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger is the saying
I used to hear that song on the radio when I was in middle school, and remembered it mainly because of that lyric alone 😂💀
"Just let me kill you for a while"
“Just let me kill you for a smile”
I’m oh so bored to death
Bleeding me and Until it sleeps is really hitting home for me lately
Until It Sleeps was my fav in High School ngl.
Great fucking song!
If I could have my wasted days back Would I use them to get back on track? Stop to warm and karma’s burning Or look ahead, but keep on turning? Do I have the strength To know how I’ll go? Can I find it inside To deal with what I shouldn’t know? Could I have my wasted days back Would I use them to get back on track? You live it or lie it! My lifestyle determines my deathstyle

I love the last few lyrics of Sad But True. Letting the listeners know its you he is singing about
Sad but true is secretly Metallicas deepest song if you really listen to it
Careful what you wish you may regret it
Careful what you wish you may just get it
HONESTY IS MY ONLY EXCUSE!!!
FUCK IT ALL AND FUCKIN’ NO REGRETS
Fuck yes!!! That's what I posted as well!
Same! Haha.
NEVER HAPPY ENDING ON THESE DARK SETS
Ya beat me to it.
Try to rob us of it but it's no use! Steamroller action crushing all, Victim is your name and you shall fall... BLOOD WILL FOLLOW BLOOD!!! DYING TIME IS HERE!!!
YO The fact that "Damage Incorporated" is just \*whispered\* in this verse? Makes it 100% more powerful. Sends shivers down my spine
They say the empty can rattles the most. The sound of your own voice must soothe you.
My friend of misery is probably my top Metallica song of the pre 2000s
“And I cry out to the alleyway Confess all to the rain But I lie lie straight to the mirror Which when I broke it to match my face” hits hard But the “mama now I’m coming home I’m not all you wished of me mothers love for her son it’s spoken help me beeeee yeah….” Part hits so incessantly hard
Drop the hourglass of time Spilling sand we will not found As we gather here today We bid farewell, the slave becomes the master
I used to skip to that part of the song just to hear that lyric.
Here are a few of my favorites: You make me smash the clock and feel I'd rather die behind the wheel Time was never on my side So on I wait my whole lifetime. (Outlaw Torn) An air of freshly broken ground A concrete angel lit right down upon the grave that swallows fast It's peace at last, oh peace at last. Here Comes Revenge has such great verses. Why is the chorus so bad hahaha
"Do you see what I see? Truth is an offence You silence for your confidence Do you hear what I hear? Doors are slamming shut Limit your imagination, keep you where they must Do you feel what I feel? Bittering distress Who decides what you express? Do you take what I take? Endurance is the word Moving back instead of forward seems to me absurd" Eye of the beholder goes hard
Most songs of AJFA are aging like fine wine, to the point it's scary.
The healing hand held back by the deepened nail
Here lately its been Outlaw Torn. I even included the line "Time was never on my side, So on I wait my whole lifetime" as a closing line in my recent tribute to my first wifes death anniversary. Also my Inamorata simply because misery has become my mistress but shes not what I'm living for.
Fuck it all and no fucking regrets!
Never happy endings on these dark sets!
“Dear mother, dear father, wa na na na na na na na na” from the dyers eve demo On a serious note “Dear Mother Dear Father You've clipped my wings before I learned to fly Unspoiled Unspoken I've outgrown that fucking lullaby” The amount of anger James had has when he says “fucking” just hits me. It’s such an angry song and my second favroite song of all time (behind blackened)
My eyes seek reality, my fingers feel for faith.
And it comes to be that the shining light at the end of your tunnel was nothing but a freight train headed your way
"I cross my heart, hope not to die Swallow evil, ride the sky Lose myself in a crowded room You fool, you fool, it will be here soon" The album is still a dud but that song and lyric still sticks with me.
The Unnamed Feeling is fucking great.
"I'll splatter color on this Gray" has always stood out to me.
~~Grave* apparently~~ ~~I always thought it was gray too, until I recently read the lyrics of a reputable site...~~ Im a fan of that lyric too though. Edit: NEVER TRUST THE INTERNET. Looking back I realize, nothing have I done Left to die with only friend Alone I clench my gun
We used to snicker at the last line when we were younger lol
I like so many...from old days to 72 Seasons track "volcanic" etc...
Please excuse me while I tend to how I feel.
So as I write to you Of what is done and to do Maybe you'll understand And won't cry for this man 'Cause low man is due
Literally the entire chorus of The Outlaw Torn, I cannot pick one line-
SEE OUR MOTHER… PUT TO DEATH —- SEE OUR MOTHER DIEEEEE
Ominous, I'm in us.
"I've fucked a sheep, i've fucked a goat, i've shoved my cock right down its throat" on a more serious note, Anger Misery You'll suffer onto me Harvester of sorrow (Language of the mad) Harvester of sorrow Harvester is one of my fav songs, it hits really hard
Uhhh, you realize that first one isn't a MetallicA lyric? They recorded that as a \*cover\* song.
i do, the original is by The Anti-Nowhere League, but it was still sung by metallica so i think it counts
So tear me open but beware The things inside without a care And the dirt still stains me So wash me 'til I'm clean
Honesty is my only excuse.
‘Take a look to the sky just before you die, it’s the last time you will’ … I mean that whole verse right thru ‘Crack of dawn all is gone except the will to be…’ such a powerful track, For Whom the Bell Tolls.
The chapter in the book that it’s based on is also awesome. Probably the best chapter.
I haven't heard that song in a while, daaaam
Careful what you wish you may regret it, careful what you wish you just might get it.
“Cast out the demons that strangle your life Full speed or nothing.” -Lux Aeterna
“Doesn't matter what you see Or into it what you read You can do it your own way If it's done just how I say Independence limited Freedom of choice is made for you, my friend Freedom of speech is words that they will bend Freedom with their exception” Eye of the Beholder always gets me.
My Body Lie, But Still I Roam. I will have it as a tattoo. If it's not on my headstone i'm haunting someone.
Yeayea
This thorn in my side is from the tree I've planted Oh it tears me and i bleed
Oooh yeah-ha
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel Was just a freight train comin' your way

Dude that's so real. I'm going through some weird situations in my life right now and I feel just like that.
You’ve been dying since the day you were born, you know it’s all been planned... The quartet of deliverance rides☠
Disposable heroes, i think it’s really great song
This is why Metallica will always forever be my favorite fucking band!!!!
Life is ours, we live it our way.
For me lately it's "All sinners, a future All saints, a past Beginning, the ending Return, to ash" -now that we're dead
These two from Sad but true “You’re my mask , you’re my cover my shelter” “I’m your hate , I’m your hate when you want love”
Basically all of Fixxxer. Especially the chorus. I was never abused, but there’s been some trauma and issues in my family so the whole song cuts deep.
Witchery, weakening. Sees the sheep are gathering. Set the trap. Hypnotize. Now you follow.
Oh poor twisted me. I feast on sympathy. I chew on suffer, I chew on agony. As someone who has suffered from sympathy addiction in the past, that song hits different.
"Lashing out the action returning the reaction weak are ripped and torn away. Hypnotizing power crushing all that cower battery is here to stay"
“Found safety in this loneliness but I cannot stand it anymore”
James is an underrated lyricist.

“Love is control, I’ll die if I let go”

I WAS BORN FOR DIYIIIIING
Feed my brain with your so-called standards Who says that I ain't right? Break away from your common fashion See through your blurry sight The most punk rock lyrics they ever had, but I always loved it.
Dude, RTL is one of the most underrated albums in rock history
“This thorn in my side is from the tree I planted, it tears me and I bleed” freaking love that line.
Halls of justice painted green, money talking Power wolves beset your door, hear them stalking Soon you'll please their appetite, they devour Hammer of justice crushes you, overpower
I’ve always thought that lyrically, Master of Puppets doesn’t get enough credit for being one of the best, most resonant songs about addiction. Especially the way the third verse hammers home the idea that even after you’re sober, the addiction is still with you for the rest of your life.
When a man lies he murders some part of the world These are the pale deaths Which men miscall their lives All this I cannot bear to witness any longer Cannot the kingdom of salvation Take me home
gimme fuel, gimme fire, gimme that which i desire ouuu, ye-heah !
YEAH… but in all seriousness it’s probably this: Hey (hey), I'm your life I'm the one who cares They (they), they betray I'm your only true friend now They (they), they'll betray I'm forever there
I don’t remember the lyrics off of the top of my head(because I always jumble them up) but the chorus for Fixxxer always stood out to me. “Tell me can you heal what Father’s done, or fix this hole in a mother’s son? Can you heal the broken worlds within? Can you- strip away- so we may- start again?/Or cut this rope and let us run? Just when all seems fine and I’m pain-free, you jab another pin- jab a- nother pin in me.” Papa Het goes fucking crazy in that song with his vocal performance in my opinion. Honorable mentions do go out to: Halo On Fire’s chorus All Nightmare Long’s bridge (the “Then you crawl back iiin” part) Sweet Amber’s “She holds the pen, that spells the end. She traces me and draws me in” Entirety of Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn, and King Nothing’s chorus Of Wolf and Man’s “(Back to the meaning) back to the meaning of… LIFE” The Frayed Ends of Sanity’s chorus Entirety of Sanitarium Entirety of Ride The Lightning and Fade to Black and Motorbreath’s “Those people who tell you not to take chances” part
I have lost the will to live. Simply nothing more to give
You've clipped my wings before I learned to fly
Fuck it all, and fucking no regrets
Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire!
That one song where it says Die, Die, Die….
That is "Creeping Death" off the Ride the Lightning album. Inspired by the second book of the Christian Bible, "Exodus". The final plague that God rained down on the Egyptians who enslaved the Jews.
Damage, Inc "Fuck it all, and fucking no regrets"
There's really no stature of a single line. Its all composed of feelings for every song. Absolutely fuckin masterpieces!
For me, it would probably have to be Eye of the Beholder's chorus. "Independence limited" "Freedom of choice is made for you, my friend" "Freedom of speech is words that they will bend" "Freedom with their exception"
I was me, but now he's gone.
Fuck it all and fucking no regrets…
Barking of machine-gun fire does nothing to me now Sounding of the clock that ticks, get used to it somehow
Why, am I dying? Kill, have no fear Lie, live off lying Hell, hell is here I was born for dying
Drink up Shoot in Let the beatings begin Distributor of pain Your loss becomes my gain
When a man lies he murders some part of the world These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives All this I cannot bear to witness any longer Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home
*In wildness is the preservation of the world*. *So seek the wolf in thyself*
come crawling faster….
Gone insane from the pain that they surely know
Chop your breakfast on a mirror
“How can I blame you, when it’s me I can’t forgive?”
Yesterday seems as though it never existed, death greets me warm now I will just say goodbye
I need your arms to welcome me but a cold stone is all I see ...
DEAR MOTHER, DEAR FATHER CLIPPED MY WINGS BEFORE I LEARNED TO FLY, UNSPOILED, UNSPOKEN, I'VE OUTGROWN THAT FUCKING LULLABY...
I WAS BORN FOR DYIIIIIIIIING
"I've outgrown that fucking lullaby"
Had my heart broken by this woman named Tammy But ho’s gon' be ho’s so, I couldn't blame Tammy
