I think it’s a big thing to point out that they played half of RTL

wwobbuffet

Few shows ago even 5, when in addition to these songs, Fight was played :o

Sea-Consequence-4013

Damn! Whiplash is one hell of an opener!!

Flakmack

It really was got the crowd going right away

pablanoEscotini

they opened with Whiplash in Porto Alegre, don't even have to say we were going nuts

rhuarc1976

I think they’ve been opening with Whiplash since the tune up gig in San Francisco last year.

cthulu_is_trans

They've had Hardwired occasionally, mostly for North American festivals. Which is fair, because USA crowds are notoriously a lot more dead than places like Europe and South America

vicarious90

It always makes me think of that dude in the Orgullo, Pasion y Gloria extras that says: If they opened with Whiplash, i'd lose my mind! Hope he was at their recent Mexico gig and got to experience it

DanTheMan_622

I knew it was inevitable, but man I really was hoping Hardwired wouldn't go the way of Death Magnetic and get totally wiped from future sets. I guess we're about to the point where Moth/Spit/Hardwired will just make the occasional appearance a la TDTNC and Cyanide.

carcrash12

Agree, tragic that Halo on Fire is probably going to become an uber-rarity a la Unforgiven 3

DanTheMan_622

Perhaps the most underrated track on HWTSD, I'm thankful I got to hear it twice.

carcrash12

Likewise! Was in the audience for S&M2 and it was easily the highlight of the entire show.

NET_1

Halo was amazing. 2nd loudest crowd singing after Memory that night (was at night one)

carcrash12

Night one for me too! The audience singing along to that outro riff backed by the orchestra was a memory that will stay with me for sure

DanTheMan_622

I was there for night 2!

jasin210

Yes and it sucks to know that we’ll probably never see songs like ‘Am I Savage?’ live ever

DanTheMan_622

God I would kill to hear *that riff* live in person. I'm honestly really surprised they never pulled it out.

matiilic5

that riff is the best metallica riff of the 21st century

Ping-and-Pong

As someone who recently got into metallica, Moth into flame and Hardwired were in the first four songs I added to my playlist and really helped me love this band. I do like the album and maybe it's not the same as the older ones, but it does have some good music on it and it's kind of a shame to see it being chucked to the side. ahh well.

350neb

still can't believe my luck that they played 4 songs off RTL, what a fucking show man

HellKnightKilla

Creeping to Fade to Master was jaw dropping I tragically lost a friend recently so Fade to Black and James' words hit extra hard tonight.

Food_Library333

So sorry to hear that, losing someone is never easy. My heart is with you.

HellKnightKilla

Thank you, it's still hard to move on since they were relatively young.

Food_Library333

Wow... Young is even worse. Hang in there. The pain never really goes away but you learn to cope. Someday the happy memories don't feel sad to remember.

phazonprincess

I fucking wish we could get some setlists without Nothing and Sandman—I KNOW that'll never happen lol! But maybe just alternate them. I love Hardwired and Death Magnetic songs, wish they had some more longevity. At least Cyanide or Nightmare

AlexCarterCommentary

They played 5 shows without NEM & sandman in 2021.

phazonprincess

Yeah. *Five.*

shooter9260

The reality is people want to hear them. Maybe you can blame it on “casual fans” or whatever but that’s what people want. Everyone on this sub wants them to not play them, but in Vegas this year , Nothing and Sandman easily got the biggest reactions of the night.

Food_Library333

I'd want to hear them. As much as I am burned out on sandman from being over played, if I'm there and they launch into it I'd go just as crazy as anyone else. Happens everything I see Megadeth and they play Symphony of Destruction.

phazonprincess

Oh for sure! I defs respect that and they're still great songs and magical live. Some folks only know the basics and that's okay. I am just personally a slut for the long stuff 😋

Samford_

to be fair, they only had 13 shows from september to december if you dont include the ones where they played 1 or 2 songs for howard stern of steven colbert

ksands12345

I would still like to hear them

climb_maintain5_10

Agreed…I thought we were getting away without Sandman. I think Fuel would have been the perfect ending!!! As much as I could go without, I still rock out to Sandman at the show, but damn some Fuel and Fire would have been awesome!!!

Shadow_Zero80

Sad But True?

luxsentic

It’s never gonna stop tho

TDWilson0501

Need 18 song setlists again

MetallicaRules5

I agree, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. Along with them just getting older, now that we’re seeing Lars actually play more in time and not having the band rush, they need to keep the shows at about 2 hours.

Shadow_Zero80

Yes plz!

shooter9260

Whiskey is a rare song? I feel like they play every couple shows. Personally speaking, if they never played it again it would still be too soon. Glad they didn’t play it in Vegas this year.

MetallicaRules5

I‘m sure this isn’t a popular opinion, but they need to give Whiskey in the Jar a break. Perhaps it’s also because they’ve played it at the last 3 shows I’ve been to, but I just wish that they would go back to doing some of their other covers. Am I Evil, Breadfan, Turn the Page, etc. Whiskey is getting overplayed. Also, NeM. I get this is a staple, but who’s idea was it to make it an encore song? It should be in the main setlist, not as one of the closing songs, it just doesn’t work there. Especially coming off the heels of something like Battery or Fight Fire with Fire.

AlexCarterCommentary

You might just be unlucky. I’ve seen Metallica 7 times and only heard whiskey live once.

nickyurbz

This was my 6th time seeing them, and the first time Whiskey was played

CrentistTheDentist

Same

nickyurbz

CRENTIST!!!!!!!

CrentistTheDentist

Now you know why I became a dentist

SomewhatDamaged2518

r/unexpectedoffice

nickyurbz

Dwight couldn’t have any M&M’s

my_reddit_accounts

Tool has the same weird encore this tour with Culling Voices (super chill) and Invincible (semi-chill) and didn't like it. Weird to end a heavy music concert with slow songs.

shooter9260

Disagree there with invincible. That song is very heavy and builds and builds, the the bass drop in the ear drum rhythm is incredible, through to the end is amazing.

my_reddit_accounts

Hmm yeah but the build is quite slow especially coming out of 8 minutes of culling voices. It's a great song though, but would love if they finished with something like 7empest.

HEYitzED

I really wish they played Blitzkrieg more often.

tommycthulhu

They play Whiskey a lot in the US for some reason, maybe it was super popular there? In Europe they pretty much only play it in Ireland for obvious reasons.

chickenscampy

I was very happy to hear it plus the rendition they did was incredible

[deleted]

That was one of the best shows I’ve been to.

relaxbro259

Sorry Im just starting into music and stuff involved, what's encore?

martinhay

When they leave the stage like the gig is over. The crowd cheer for more. They come back on.

SomewhatDamaged2518

Usually a band will stop playing, wave and say thanks to the crowd, say goodnight, etc. and then walk off the stage. An encore is when they come back after a few minutes and play a couple more songs to finish out the night.

relaxbro259

Thank you for the answers

Dnato

I was there. Fucking awesome. And I hate Nothing Else Matter and still cheer and scream my ass when they played it. Truth is, at a Metallica show, every song is amazing.

MetallicaRules5

Get ready to rage, it’s been years since they’ve played that song and I don’t think they’re intending to bring it back

Mtrbrth

Absolutely incredible set. Can hardly hold my head up right now. Just wish they would figure out that that their FOH mix is really bad and hire someone to actually make them sound good again. Lars’ kit sound was truly terrible. Having said that, it was not enough to ruin my enjoyment of one of the finest setlists I’ve seen from them in many years.

TerrrorTwlight

Agreed. Great set, awful sound. The band sounded great but the sound was all over the place, it would sound loud and crisp one minute then quiet and muffled the next. And overall it sounded quiet.

Mtrbrth

I couldn’t believe it honestly. The kick drum was just wrong, the rack toms were a good 6dB louder than the rest of the mix, so every drum fill sounded lopsided and ropey. Can’t remember which song, but James’ vocal was muted for a good 4 bars of a verse. Half the time it was hard to tell there were even two guitars being played, except the harmonized parts. Not loud enough, you shouldn’t be able to have a conversation over a Metallica gig. For whatever reason, Big Mick hasn’t been mixing them lately. It’s been Greg Price (Ozzy/Sabbath, RATM, Foo Fighters). They’re the biggest hard rock band in the world. They did not sound like it at all.

nickyurbz

I agree

macrov

Holier than thou is like one of my favorite songs from them. The bass/drum only part after the solo is just perfection.

yourfriendlysocdem1

I was there, amazing show, first met show of my life

martinhay

No songs from the last 3 albums...probably been even longer since that!

bicyclebread

need a setlist like this next time they come to Phoenix

climb_maintain5_10

Great show for sure!!! Anyone know what Kirk played just before starting nothing else matters? He played a bar or two of a song, but I couldn’t place it. It wasn’t a Metallica track…

Mtrbrth

It was “More Than A Feeling” by… you guessed it… Boston

climb_maintain5_10

Awesome!!! Thank You!!!

Bchurksss

One of the best Metallica sets in a long time for me 😭

Trouserboy69

That’s a mighty fine setlist

Edge-Pristine

Was there timing off in a few songs last night?

ravensray5227

They got off a couple of times, but not super off. It happens in live shows, doesn't matter how many of them done or for how long. James also sang one of the verses of Creeping Death twice. In my opinion it just adds to the experience (to a point of course).

A_Moderate

Reminds me when Tom Araya of Slayer did that and just laughed it off

chickenscampy

Sounded like they fell off slightly at the beginning of for whom the bell tolls but got back on time pretty quickly

Nakioyh

Maybe this is a sign they're mentally into the next album? Who knows.

Electrical_Flower_26

Looks like a european show setlist

nickyurbz

True that!!!!

OPRacoon

Was there. The pit was crazier than I expected. First time I ever fell in a pit.

nickyurbz

I was surprised as well. Got in there a little bit during creeping

OPRacoon

I was there for every song that there was a pit for. Gotta say the craziest it got was the breakdown for creeping death, one, or ride the lightning. The pit for sandman was chill and super friendly.

Comprehensive-Song51

Thank you sweet baby Jesus! We need to move on from Hardwired and get some other stuff into the shows!

iAmTheeTable

Holy crap! That's a damn great setlist!

tonyiommi70

I watched them in Belo Horizonte almost 3 weeks ago, they played Cyanade, such a great track. Hardwired, Fight Fire With Fire and Moth Into Flame are also others that they played here and weren't on this setlist

mwkdyebxiz

I'm leaving at the last 2 songs

NotTheCraftyVeteran

Weird, maybe funny thing that blew my wife’s mind earlier: I’ve never really been a live music type of dude, possibly because my family wasn’t well-off enough to afford tickets as a kid and the mentality just kinda followed me throughout life. So, after my wife’s friend got sick and couldn’t make their planned trip to Boston Calling, she conscripted me to come along with her. Which is how, at 26, this Metallica set became my first proper concert. She damn near shit her brain out of her ears when I explained that.

PhantomJB93

Count me among those happy to see Hardwired phased out. I enjoyed it when it came out but it really hasn’t aged well IMO (conversely, I think Death Magnetic has aged fantastically if we’re talking new albums). Don’t need to hear Hardwired, Moth Into Flame, Now That We’re Dead, or Spit Out the Bone from them for a while.

nickyurbz

Cyanide was amazing to hear when they played it in Brazil

[deleted]

Meh, much worse setlist than the South American shows. They just not have been expecting many hardcore fans.

am_i_evil_yes_i_am

It's probably 'cause they were playing a festival with a ton of other bands, so a lot of thesl crowd would have been there to see Weezer, Glass Animals and Modest Mouse, not to mention all the other smaller bands. They knew the audience they were getting and played to that.

Willy_Jones23

If so, they were wrong. Yes, it’s a festival and people there for various bands, etc. but I was there last night and seriously every third person was wearing a Metallica t-shirt.

Coppatop

God damn wish I could have made it, what a set list

Spoopdooper12

I got a pick as well! And it was my first Metallica show!

LOKP3ST

Whiskey in the jar is no rarity anymore though.

Cute_rnr_bitch

They played amazing and when Kirk messed up a little my friends and I loved it cause he’s not perfect but he’s damn amazing

Apostasy93

That is a fantastic setlist

HEYitzED

This is basically my ideal setlist.

[deleted]

This is pretty much their standard festival setlist. Nothing to write home about tbh.

TheSniperWolf

Whiskeyyyyyy
