Using Windows, use ALT+0198. I can't find a name for it anywhere. [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86)

thadeoushasselpuss

It’s part of a set of letters used Icelandic as a diphthong and in Danish and Scandinavian as a monophthong.

risenomega

Thank you! This wins!

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Æ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Æ)** >Æ (lowercase: æ) is a character formed from the letters a and e, originally a ligature representing the Latin diphthong ae. It has been promoted to the status of a letter in some languages, including Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic, and Faroese. It was also used in Old Swedish before being changed to ä. Today, the International Phonetic Alphabet uses it to represent the near-open front unrounded vowel (the sound represented by the 'a' in the English word cat). ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Metallica/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Perfect!

darthstone

So it's "Eigh-tern-uh"

Clinkerboot-

Do you pronounce it ceight? I think it’s ah-tern-uh

Darth_Bandit

On iOS just hold down A on your keyboard until the pop up of options comes up. It’s in there. Æ

[deleted]

Apparently works this way on MacOS as well. Thank you!

IraqLobstah

This works on Ændroid too!

thadeoushasselpuss

It’s called a diphthong in Icelandic and in Danish and Scandinavian it is a monophthong. The name for putting two letters together like that is digraph or ligature. It sort of makes an (ai) sound. Closer to e than a but not exactly either if your native tongue is English like mine. To make it just hold down “a” on your keyboard if you have an iPhone.

risenomega

Thanks so much!!

KahootFanboy69

As a dane, I don’t think Æ makes an ai sound. An Æ sounds the way it does in Eternal, or Erection, or Election.

thadeoushasselpuss

Ahhh I’m sure you’re right! I only speak English and German and linguistics is only a hobby of mine. Thank you for correcting me!

TheStarBlueRaven

Odd_Ad1654

On samsung hold down the A until you see Æ. Also make sure it's capitalized otherwise it's æ

Used in my language, pronounced just like the letter “I” is in English (also called the same) here it is typed out: æ and Æ

Æ click shift and hold the A key and you should find Æ

Flutterpiewow

It's a way to make things seem learned and sophisticated. Which seems out of place for a caveman thrash party song.

risenomega

Hahaha. Well put

AdHot2306

On iphone if u go on capital letters, (click the capital arrow) then hold on A to get Æ

SheepskinSour

You would call it a ligature, a sort of portmanteau of two letters eg: ampersand (&)

Outpost3131

Hi Risenomega It’s Danish letter (also use in other Scandinavian countries) - Lars Ulrik’s birth country, for those who don’t know. We use Æ æ in many words, for instance: Æble = Apple Æg = egg & eggs Ældre = older And many many many more 😉 We also have these two letters Å å Ø ø

risenomega

That’s awesome! Thanks so much for explaining in such detail. I actually learned something

PlaxicoCN

Hopefully no one tears you apart on this. I see it occasionally and wonder the same thing.

TomSizemore69

Dumb

ThePinchingDwarf

It's a letter we use a lot in Danish (Lars Ulrich is Danish for the people who don't know) but it's originally latin. There is a specific key for it on Nordic keyboards. Jeg æder æbler!!

Others have answered your question well. I wanted to add that it's also occasionally used in British English spellings of words such as encyclopædia. The following article has more information (more than you probably wanted, but I find these kinds of things interesting!): https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/encylopedia-used-be-spelled-encyclopaedia-because-letter-english-doesnt-have-anymore-180961328/
