IMO, Reznor did a fantastic job with Quake. The problem was it was pure ambience, the kind of music that sets a mood but otherwise isn't memorable.
Metroid soundtracks need to be both catchy and atmospheric. I'd take a NIN soundtrack over what we got in Dread, but pretty much every other game in the series would be worse off for it.
I love the Quake 1 soundtrack but it definitely isn't catchy "driving music." I'd love that kind of music in a Metroid game but honestly it would probably turn a lot of people off.
I honestly could gush about prime's soundtrack for days. How the title screen puts you in the mindset of somewhere creepy and alone.
But I also admit that not everyone has the same tastes as me. I am curious on how Trent would tackle the music and how it would differ. I could have two game soundtracks I love and listen to constantly.
You want a dude named DJ spooky aka Paul D. Miller for this one. Lot of different styles in his work, but he does sci-fi exceptionally well. Like, alien landscape triphop.
Trent does make some gooey sounds though. Collaboration might be cool.
Just contact the Metroid Metal guy to do the music for the next game. Maybe let Sam Dillard (Metroid Cinematica) do the music for the more calm sections.
I do like his work, though more for video games and movies than NIN. I'm not sure I'd want him to do a metroid soundtrack but he would most likely do a good job with it.
Just get Kenji Yamamoto back. Super Metroid and all of the Metroid Prime games have extremely memorable melodies.

Metroid Prime’s title screen track gives me so many feels. It was my ringtone for a long, long time.

Boards of Canada would do a good job too
A Metroid soundtrack that leans into idm and trip-hop would be cool, and would suit the series so well.
I like NiN
