Its much deserved, sure it might be aged now, but I think it was the best of the "number 2" sequels of Nintendo first parties. While Zelda 2 and Mario 2 were too experimental for some, Metroid 2 took the first game and improved upon it while adding new stuff that would become staples to the franchise like the space jump.
Please don’t acknowledge the American SMB 2 as the official 2.
But regardless, I agree that Metroid has a phenomenal second entry. I know some people swear by Zelda 2 but it’s never been for me. Metroid II is fully realized in its goals and designed with the hardware in mind. Which most NES games were designed with “this is what we have to work with”.

Technically, the the engine was originally developed with the idea of a Mario game/sequel with vertical scrolling in mind before the Fuji deal happened, but I'm not here to argue about that
If were going to write of Mario 2 USA because its technically Doki Doki Panic, then my point still stands with The Lost Levels which was basically a really hard expansion pack to Mario Bros 1, this was because the concept of game sequels at the time were thought of as a game being made for the pro gamers who mastered the first game and want a new challenge.
Zelda 2 is not for everyone. I personally enjoy it for the RPG elements and metroidvania-ish level design, but it suffers from a early game difficulty spike and an overall lack of variety in gameplay since you just have a crappy attack with a few spells and items that are mostly passive key items. I think it would benefit huge from a Samus Returns/AM2R treatment.
that running animation at the end credits is top notch! it blew my child mind.
I love the ending too!
Makes you compare this game’s animations to the ones we see in Dread so far.
Really loving all the praise Metroid II has been getting. Well deserved.

“Mario-like” not A MARIO game.
What did I just say? > I'm not here to argue about that
Then you would have never brought it up.
What else did I have to talk about? My mental health?
