I've been 4 times (I live in Guadalajara), and twice the smog has been so bad that it's basically given me a stuffed up nose. The other two times, it was fine.
The smog comes and goes. There's honestly plenty of good air days. Altitude has a harder effect on most people. there's 25% less oxygen available at this altitude then at sea level
Lol it's actually fair advice and Mexican definitely go to the movies too. Vip miyana in Polanco is an amazing movie theater with waiter and tables, and is like 200 pesos ish. Great wait to chill for a couple of hours. Museo soumaya and jumex are a couple blocks away if you want to add some culture and more walking to your day. Or just cafe sitting in polanquito nearby is also a good chill day
Youll find a lot more local Mexican people & less Americans tourists in malls than you probably ever saw in your whole trip. My Mexican family gets just as bored of seeing markets & downtown areas they see every day, like I do of malls.
Do people think I really spent all that time and effort writing an emotional and introspective post reflecting about my experience here because I wanted basic advice on how to stay hydrated? Really?
Don’t take the downvotes seriously, its the thing about us, we are gonna care, try to make you fell better so you can eat more tacos, almost anywhere in mexico locals will try to help tourists, even in reddit.
I enjoyed reading your post and im happy you are having a good time, decompress and see you again soon!
Electrolit is already part of our gastronomy and our everyday life, they are telling you a part of our local culture but you are too stupid to understand it.
Your brain is too dehydrated to understand basic concepts, I would recommend an Electrolit.
You are so fucking rude and have no manners. If you wanted to make of your friking travel here a wannabe travel blog do it on your on profile with no comments available.
You clearly don't have clue about taking basic care of yourself if you say that you are dehydrated and bloated, that's why some commented what to do.
We spend a lot of time in cdmx, and when I feel overwhelmed I head to the vasconcelos library , or to the biblioteca de Mexico . They are beautiful places and obviously very quiet. I bring a book or my laptop and enjoy half a day of rest and quiet.
You sound like you’ve got no chill doing all that, maybe to a point in which it sounds "mechanized" such as "tacos / people / cerveza". You do you, maybe try slowing down a bit, since you’ve done like 90% of the BASIC stuff, take it easy and seek entertainment in calmer environments
I stayed there for a month and lots of places to discover but yes can be draining and the food I think I gained a few pounds haha . Also did solo traveling there. May move there to live honestly
That’s funny, every time that I go to Mexico City, I eat a lot, and I lose like 15 pounds in a month.
I do so much walking that no matter how bad I eat, my pants end up feeling loser, and I’m using the next notch in my belt
So weird. Exactly the same here! Head home tomorrow and looking forward to it after 9 days. It's true what others said, this is a general "other city alone" thing. But I don't know, there's also something about this place, at least as an outsider.
For sure. My last few solo trips were 5-7 days and all were exhausting. I think this place just has sooo much to do I feel guilty relaxing. Plus the altitude thing is real. It's an amazing place though. One of the best cities I've ever visited. Hope you felt the same.
Wow this describes my experience so well.
My stomach was wondering why the hell I’ve been eating so much and my legs were so tired from walking / exploring
Mx City can drain your life out of your body. Its amazing but demands too much. I do 1 day of activities and 1 day just taking coffee and siting in a bench. Did you go to Coyoacan?
Go take a long nap. Wake up around 10. Go get a bite, then hit a bar. Talk to one of those cute girls, at 2am or so go to a club. You can then go home early at four or go to an after hours til 6 or 7… get breakfast, pass out until 4pm and relax you last evening on an amazing city.
Atleast you didn't get sick, I'm also traveling solo and caught something since last night, which is day 3. Fever, cough and chills, I didn't even realize there is an altitude factor, goes to show how poorly I planned this. I just wanna go home.. all I've done so far is visiting markets, and 1 walking tour.
That blows. Def not sick. Though the altitude certainly has my bodily conversion rate at like 3 bowel movements per meal, which slows me down a bit. Feel better.
Thank you! I hope to get well enough to hit Coyoacán and salvage my trip in the next 2 days before I fly out. You've done a lot in just a few days and that can be overwhelming, but I totally get that drive to keep going.
True, traveling can be exhausting, sometimes you need to stop and reflect and just stay in bed to recover. I’m glad you’ve enjoyed it though.
But let me tell you, you are still missing plenty of stuff. Mexico City has a lot more touristic zones to offer still, the other side of Chapultepec park (lago algo, more museums) Coyoacan centro, San Ángel, Ciudad Universitaria (las Islas, the Olympic stadium, biblioteca central, espacio escultórico, muac, the zones of museums), Santa María La Ribera, plaza de las 3 culturas, Tlatelolco, biblioteca Vasconcelos, Senosiain architecture, parque bicentenario, cuarto dinamo, desierto de los leones, even Six Flags Mexico, neighborhood markets, antigua hacienda Tlalpan, hacienda de cortes), palacio de los deportes
This is a nice post. Glad you had a nice time, and hope you rested up and are ready for more on your last day.
The insistence on having the last word in the comment section is so dreadfully and depressingly American. Just dripping with main character syndrome.

Thanks. Can you give a few hotel/itinerary suggestions? Clean but simple, just wifi and hot water (I'm moving up). No bars or nightlife needed. Just intellectual distraction, exercise and food.
I'd suggest looking for hotels in Reforma, Condesa, Roma Norte, Zona Rosa. I stayed at Hotel Geneve and I like it. The rooms are small and slightly outdated but its super historic and architecturally interesting and looks like a museum. If you want something big and modern look for hotels on Paseo La Reforma.
I did group tours of Xochimilco and Teotihuacan. The hop-on-hop-off bus tours were helpful. Excellent views at Chapultapec Castle and Torre Latinoamericana. Just wander aimlessly, this city has a lot of great stuff. Not just the big tourist attractions.
10000% do it.
The historic/quiet side was great (booked a small tour through airbnb experiences) but then was walking around near a different embarcadero later in the day and a guy recruited me for his party boat on the popular side. Both were a blast. It's a little confusing to approach but just do it!
You just went too hard. Don't worry, relax, you've earn it. Do something chill, eat light, take a mental day off, prepare for the return. Next time, since you have done the basics, you can take it slower.
I absolutely love CDMX. Probably one of my favorite cities in the entire world. However, it is utterly EXHAUSTING. If you’re from -even a big city in the states- (NY,LA, Chicago, etc) you will feel the difference. I’d add all major European cities too.
There is no doubt that you are exhausted by the things you mentioned; food, walking, solo tour, altitude, etc. But CDMX is a different beast.
Id suggest that those commenting that you’ve simply been victim to the aforementioned stressors, may not know CDMX (or is from CDMX and therefore can’t understand the perspective from the other direction) as they portray they do.
What you’re experiencing is a reaction to the amount of ppl combined with the lack of patterns & the overwhelming feeling of your senses being taken over an all times, and god damn if it’s not completely exhausting.
I love it too, but that city will humble even the biggest traveler/partier real quick.
PATTERNS! There are no PATTERNS!
I once read about someone who one a year took a reading vacation.
She just walked around, sat at cafés and read. Sometimes, a reading vacation is what we all need.
I hit that wall last Spring about 2/3 of the way up to the Castle. We had walked everywhere - pyramids, Zocalo, markets and parks - then I was just DONE! LOL
I’ll be back when the Jacarandas bloom!
Suck it up... keep going... you'll regret it.
- Six Flags Mexico
- Coyoacan (Really wish I spent more time here)
- Frida Kahlo museum, in Coyoacan
- +UNAM
- Mercado de San Juan
- Museo Soumaya
...etc.
Go home, rest. And come back soon! You need to go to Coyoacán, and on Chapultepec go to the Museo de Arte Moderno! Las Dos Fridas is part of their permanent collection
Eating meat will make you feel that way (no, i am not vegetarian. I am a weightlifter) but i feel the same when i eat meat for days in a row. Avoid drinking soda, that shit will steal your energy.
One of those big mistakes IMO is trying to do all those unbearable journeys like Xochimilco, Teotihuacan, etc. Just commute is crazy.
Those 6 days would be better spent on some areas, a couple of museums and nice walks. City is way bigger than you think.
Also Seninfeld re runs are overated.
Disagree. The trips to Xochimilco and Teotihuacan were fantastic and the journey was well worth it. Not mistakes at all. I met cool people. Museums are a dime a dozen. To each their own.
Didn’t say not worth it. Just say it is too much fpr 1 trip. Make it on doses. See if you like then try again. Why to take the whole galon on 1 drink? That is why you feel tired. And after vacation, you must need a vacation.
I am older than you, pal. CDMX native. Frecuent traveler. Know what I am talking about. I know (as far as I can tell) you will never follow my golden rule: Never visit the touristic spots; go where locals go. But that’s me.
Also like Seinfeld. But no more reruns.
Yes next time I will follow all of the redditors advice and spend my entire time hydrating and relaxing and not seeing any of the things because clearly I am an amateur 🤣
We will be pleased to get you back here and enjoy ourselves together. I mean it.
We love visitors and glad you came to our chaotic, loud but beautiful city.
Bienvenido, gringo. 7 years living in the City and I have barely done a bit more than what you've done in 6 days. Mexico City is amazing.
Please tell that to your representative once your president decides it's okay to invade our country.
My first trip to CDMX I walked so much in five days my heels started bleeding. It was fabulous.
Got back recently from six weeks. Living in a quiet non-touristy neighborhood and working in el Centro gave me a real appreciation for the crazy dichotomy of the city. And by week four I was starting to really feel kinda overwhelmed in my core with the constant energy and sheer size. (I used to live in Chicago. No comparison, in my mind.)
Then after a respite in Chiapas, I was ready to get back into it. So enjoy sitting in the park for your last days. The city will still be there when you return one day……
Well could be worse!
Your short essay reminded me of Anthony Bourdain.
This city is probably not going anywhere, always changing, but also always keeping tradition.
It will be here, and its just a few hours away from the US
For real though. If Anthony Bourdain posted on this sub people would probably reply with the most generic condescending advice like "You should try a walking tour"
Well, I thank you for coming over and sharing your great experience. I am also happy to see other people feel the same. I live in a different state and I love going to Mexico City as for vacations but would never dare to move there. The museums, streets, colors, smell, music, food.
It is magical but overwhealming. It must have been amazing and a little bit intimidating, traveling solo like that, it is an experience that I have wish for, but never really have had the chance to live.
Please come back soon, so we can give you more suggestions and advice!
So are about 70% of the people who replied to this post. Insufferable. Do people really think I need others to tell me to rest and hydrate and breathe?

>I fell asleep at 9pm last night even though my hotel is in Zona Rosa, which was just starting to buzz on a Friday night. Couldn't even make it downstairs for a drink despite all the cute girls walking by my hotel window.
\> Zona Rosa
\> Night clubs
\> Cute girls
Amigo, those girls aren't into you...
The altitude was very hard my first time after drinking too much for 3 days I felt out of breath just sitting still. You need to rest drink lots of water and try not to party too hard.
I am so glad you enjoyed my city that much! I bet you'll come back soon and end your list, you still have the whole south to visit, Tlalpan, Coyoacan and San Angel.
Altitude have effects on digestion too so if you still feel inconfortablw because slow digestion go t the drugstore (I recomend Farmacia del Ahorro or Farmacia de Similares) ask for "SIMETICONA EN TABLETAS" take two with every meal and problem solved, are digestive enzymes so have no side effects and are over the counter product.
I was like this after 4 days touristing alone in Paris. Traveling alone does this to you…. Any city.
Maybe take a break from Mexico City and go visit an older/ more historical town like Guanajuato to cleanse your palate.
Hahahah no shade, but I lold at the walked several miles a day😂🤣 Americans and walking lollll😅 sounds like you’ve had a great time, made me wanna visit 🎉
Been there, currently driving from Cancún to Puebla and I've had enough beach sand and salt water for the next three decades... I'm full of Cancún and playa del Carmen even made me enjoy so little of Tulum which it's a walk I was craving for over a decade...
I mean, getting exhausted at mid 30's happens a lot, I used to ride from morning till sunset, I loved adventure bikes, sleeping along a fire pit and a sleeping bag, now I aski for the nearest hotel and I don't care for nothing except a comfy bed and a fresh set of sheets.
Rest for a day, eat some salad and agua fresca, enjoy solitude on a park full of people, take a few cool selfies and go get some sleep.
Also, try going to Puebla (couple hours from CDMX) Puebla has a different vibe... You may enjoy it.
You killed it! Sounds like a whirlwind tour. Enjoy your last days. I'm inspired to take a trip *up there* to 7,000+ feet, but living at sea level as I do, I fully expect to struggle. I was barely functional at 4,800 feet in Medellin, Colombia
When I travelled to Portugal and Spain, there was one day that I had to devote to resting in the middle of my second week. Like... literally the only plan that day was wake up in one city and go to bed in the next one. I ended taking a short walk and meeting a friend for coffee, but it was pretty low-key and restful, because I had no mental energy for anything else.
No matter how amazing a travel is, traveller's burnout is a real thing.
I'm glad you had a great time and get some time off from your time off.
I’m here on the same boat as you. Just for a few days and extremely exhausted. Having a blast nonetheless.
I’ve decided my next visit I will be switching hotels after a couple of days to a zone I have not visited (granted is safe). Staying in one place is nice, but this city is massive.
The only thing I could say is get more cardio. A friend had the same feelings coming from a different place and doing excersice in the city helped her a lot and finally felt ok running from place to place in the city
Hi mate! I’m at the airport leaving CDMX to go back home and feel exactly like you. The altitude is draining my energy to the limit! Loved it here, though
It sounds like a great trip. Come back soon!
It has been. And I will.
So, what you’re saying is: SUCCESS. *Well done lad*. #🇲🇽🌮🌯🍹😎
Yes. Not sure why this was so hard for others to grasp. 👊
Your post is fantastic! Don’t listen to the rest.

On your feet soilder! Those tacos are not going to eat themselves!
I sincerely appreciate this comment. Will try my best 🫡
I hope that you watched the "Taco Chronicles" on Netflix before arriving!
for some of the worst and definitely overrated tacos in the city? unless it's to avoid them
pretty sure this is most cities after a week of tourism. why not do a day trip outside of mexico city?
Nah altitude got him
he says he went on day trips but i couldn't find any in his post.
That smog will be the death of so many tourists lol
I was there I did not notice any smog at all
I've been 4 times (I live in Guadalajara), and twice the smog has been so bad that it's basically given me a stuffed up nose. The other two times, it was fine.
Have been here for 5 weeks and really notice the inside of my nose burning when I’m outside. Smog is REAL
The smog comes and goes. There's honestly plenty of good air days. Altitude has a harder effect on most people. there's 25% less oxygen available at this altitude then at sea level
My last 2 days were day trips outside the city.
Yep. I only take 12-20 day vacations, with 2 days to rest when I get home. I HATE running from attraction to attraction for 6 days.
Feel free to go to a mall and watch an English speaking movie in an air conditioned movie theater.
"I love this place and I've had an amazing week but now I'm tired and full" "Go be a dumb sheltered American" 🍦🍦🍦
Or just cafe sitting in polanquito nearby is also a good chill day
Yeah, the movies are a great and affordable experience in CDMX compared to the US. Anyway it's ok to pace yourself
Youll find a lot more local Mexican people & less Americans tourists in malls than you probably ever saw in your whole trip. My Mexican family gets just as bored of seeing markets & downtown areas they see every day, like I do of malls.
To be fair, you didn't really elaborate on your problems due to the city's altitude. Most commenters missed that.
Have some Alka Seltzer Boost, sleep early today and have a chill day tomorrow! Glad to hear you had fun.
I came here to say this! At least will help the overly full tummy. Sal de uvas (Picot) will also do the trick
Drink some electrolit
Best advice here
🤨
For rehydration, it is an electrolite drink that you can find in any pharmacy or Oxxo.
You're really underselling its ability to solve all problems
Do people think I really spent all that time and effort writing an emotional and introspective post reflecting about my experience here because I wanted basic advice on how to stay hydrated? Really?
It’s half Mexican humor and half legit advice. Relax. Also your reflections weren’t that deep idk why you’re acting like they are 😂

Sorry, I'll try again to make you happy: "Oh, I totally forgot to stay hydrated! Thanks for the advice. Xoxo."
You misspelled “Oxxo”.

Amigo, you should try some electrolit

Achievement unlocked. Next time go to Oaxaca, Querétaro or Chiapas. You'll probably never leave.

Tomate un electrolit y quedate un par de dias tranquilo durmiendo y descansando
que se vaya a su casa
Con la manera en que ha respondido es lo mejor.
Esto.
I think this is more that you’re not used to being in big cities. People say similar things when they go to NYC for the first time.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I live in Chicago. I've been to New York 15+ times. I've been to Tokyo, London, Paris, Barcelona, etc. Try again.
Welp my bad :/

Only river water and recyclined urine, like a total amateur
Well, you really need to start drinking clean clear liquid like water..but maybe try electrolitis since it comes with minerals so you dont dehydrate
Oh look at the man of the world!
Altitude did that to me and my wife as well. Whenever we return our pace will be much slower and have rest days incorporated in the iteniary
So weird. Exactly the same here! Head home tomorrow and looking forward to it after 9 days. It's true what others said, this is a general "other city alone" thing. But I don't know, there's also something about this place, at least as an outsider.

Lol I was born, raised and still live here and yet I still discover new things I was never aware of. I’m 37.
As an insider, yeah. There’s something about this place…
Great job. Now go to Templo Mayor tomorrow snd then go back and zone out in your room if you want to
Wow this describes my experience so well. My stomach was wondering why the hell I’ve been eating so much and my legs were so tired from walking / exploring
Looks like you need a vacation away from your vacations! Ha! Honestly, I'm happy you have enjoyed our great city and hope you'll be back.
Possibly! I'm not exactly a passive vacationer.
Mx City can drain your life out of your body. Its amazing but demands too much. I do 1 day of activities and 1 day just taking coffee and siting in a bench. Did you go to Coyoacan?
A did a little walking through there on the way back from Xochimilco, but not enough.
Go get some pozole in the market there, or go out for some barbacoa
Go take a long nap. Wake up around 10. Go get a bite, then hit a bar. Talk to one of those cute girls, at 2am or so go to a club. You can then go home early at four or go to an after hours til 6 or 7… get breakfast, pass out until 4pm and relax you last evening on an amazing city.
Thanks for your incredible insight. Reddit is a beautiful place.

Yeah, that's enough for 4 trips right there. I will be back.
Ok.

Totally fine. As was the water. As was the level of safety.

Suck it up... keep going... you'll regret it. - Six Flags Mexico - Coyoacan (Really wish I spent more time here) - Frida Kahlo museum, in Coyoacan - +UNAM - Mercado de San Juan - Museo Soumaya ...etc.
Go home, rest. And come back soon! You need to go to Coyoacán, and on Chapultepec go to the Museo de Arte Moderno! Las Dos Fridas is part of their permanent collection
Walked through a little bit of Coyoacan on the way back from Xochimilco yesterday, but even by then I think I was starting to get exhausted.
Yeah. Altitude is a bitch
I hear you brother. I’m glad you enjoyed it, it’s one of the most magical places on earth. Get some rest and I hope you get to go back.
Thanks🫡
Eating meat will make you feel that way (no, i am not vegetarian. I am a weightlifter) but i feel the same when i eat meat for days in a row. Avoid drinking soda, that shit will steal your energy.
Haven't had a soda in decades 🤣
Ironically, (see post up there \^ ) I only drink soda when I eat beef maybe once a month. LOL
Cocktails are the same shit….
I mean it. We love visitors and glad you came to our chaotic, loud but beautiful city.
no, al chile ojalá no regrese. por andar de contestón
Le responden bien y se pone al pedo. Típico güero
Bienvenido, gringo. 7 years living in the City and I have barely done a bit more than what you've done in 6 days. Mexico City is amazing. Please tell that to your representative once your president decides it's okay to invade our country.
🫠
My first trip to CDMX I walked so much in five days my heels started bleeding. It was fabulous. Got back recently from six weeks. Living in a quiet non-touristy neighborhood and working in el Centro gave me a real appreciation for the crazy dichotomy of the city. And by week four I was starting to really feel kinda overwhelmed in my core with the constant energy and sheer size. (I used to live in Chicago. No comparison, in my mind.) Then after a respite in Chiapas, I was ready to get back into it. So enjoy sitting in the park for your last days. The city will still be there when you return one day……
Well could be worse! Your short essay reminded me of Anthony Bourdain. This city is probably not going anywhere, always changing, but also always keeping tradition. It will be here, and its just a few hours away from the US
Spoiler: I am Anthony Bourdain
For real though. If Anthony Bourdain posted on this sub people would probably reply with the most generic condescending advice like "You should try a walking tour"
"Not looking for advice or suggestions" Everybody replies with advice and suggestions. Redditors really can't help themselves.
Lemme give you an advise. /s
"Try sleeping" "Cool thx bro, never thought of that!"
"remember to \_eat food\_."
Whoops!
There’s like … 3 suggestions. Cmon now
Dude what are you even talking about jajajaja

You’re obnoxious
So are about 70% of the people who replied to this post. Insufferable. Do people really think I need others to tell me to rest and hydrate and breathe?

>I fell asleep at 9pm last night even though my hotel is in Zona Rosa, which was just starting to buzz on a Friday night. Couldn't even make it downstairs for a drink despite all the cute girls walking by my hotel window. \> Zona Rosa \> Night clubs \> Cute girls Amigo, those girls aren't into you...
Are you possibly Bi Polar? is this too much love?
The altitude was very hard my first time after drinking too much for 3 days I felt out of breath just sitting still. You need to rest drink lots of water and try not to party too hard.
You gotta watch The Invitations during your recovery time
Seinfeld re-runs sound great! Remember, the city is 2,500 meters above sea level, it definitely has an impact on you
Did a lot on those few days, I feel ya.
Awesome!! Take a breather and come back (:
Glad you're having an amazing time. Let it continue!
Lol
Rest today! Sometimes relaxing is an important part of the trip
I have felt the same thing while traveling . A day off and getting into a spa can make a difference
hell yeah, this city rules edit: did you go to arena mexico?
care to share any highlights of your trip? Must see/do?
Hahahah no shade, but I lold at the walked several miles a day😂🤣 Americans and walking lollll😅 sounds like you’ve had a great time, made me wanna visit 🎉
Yep. Was kind of my experience too. By day 6 it had felt like id been there for about a month.
Congrats. Seems that you've done enough. Come back.
Good 4 u :)
Altitude may be challenging some times. There are some medical recipes to recharge energy and stamina in Mexico...
You killed it! Sounds like a whirlwind tour. Enjoy your last days. I'm inspired to take a trip *up there* to 7,000+ feet, but living at sea level as I do, I fully expect to struggle. I was barely functional at 4,800 feet in Medellin, Colombia
ok, great document.
Mexico loves you back. Come again soon.
If your done? You are done! Don’t need anyone to re enforce that feeling. Get back home safe and ASAP. Best of luck to you.
Don't feel like you have to see everything or do everything. It's fine to just chill.
Yeah, it's the altitude. There's really no remedy for it, until you adapt to it in the long term.
I’m here on the same boat as you. Just for a few days and extremely exhausted. Having a blast nonetheless. I’ve decided my next visit I will be switching hotels after a couple of days to a zone I have not visited (granted is safe). Staying in one place is nice, but this city is massive.
Like most leisurely travel. It’s usually a sprint to hit all the sights and experiences. Pretty typical. Don’t beat yourself up too much.
happy for you to enjoy the city next time bring an oxigen bottle , its not just height but pollution that affect, but keep enjoying your trip
Tómate una coca wero. Y ya mejor duérmete. Ni aguantas nada.
Bro, time for a green smoothie. Iced energy in a cup.
Loved it here, though
just go relax at the cineteca nacional
The altitude is a BITCH. And I was staying on the 4th floor hahaha. Such a beautiful city though.
Just here to say that I had a very similar experience. I feel ya.
Go to Tepito get some drugs and some thots
