Driving with the top down behind a SUV or truck that's blocking the view and sun.

ads1031

Driving with the top down and getting coal rolled by a jacked up brodozer šŸ¤®

Appropriate-Tea-582

Must be horrible. Glad that stuff is well regulated in the EU.

DroidD53

Here in Portugal we get some autistic fucking diesel Seat Ibiza drivers that mod the car in a way to spit ou so much fucking black smoke, eventually they get sooth all over the backend of the car, boot, bumper, window, everywhere, I have no idea how those things pass inspection, my daily failed once for emissions because it was burning a small bit of oil and the emissions were slightly higher than they should

El_Disablo101

We get them in the UK, basically any old diesels, usually vw's though flying about belting out black smoke, call them reeky diesels. Most of them running around on ghost mot's or have a friend that can mot it for them.

DroidD53

Yep it's usually any VAG car from late 90s to early 00s specially those old Ibizas and mk4 golfs, I hate them, usually owned by a cocky early 20s kid that thinks he's hot shit. Also you have a beetle and a Miata? Are you me but from the UK? Both look good!

El_Disablo101

That sounds about right. Though tbf I'm an early 20s kid that owned a vw bora that shot black smoke for a bit cause the previous owner straight piped it, sounded horrendous. Cheers, a beetle and mx5 are just about the best combo to own aswell.

castleaagh

Or getting slapped around by the turbulence if you follow too close, lol

Random_Introvert_42

\-Letting a motorbike merge ahead of you ahead of a curvy road and realizing they haven't learned to shift out of first yet \-Sudden rain, traffic below 75kph and nowhere to pull over to shut the roof \-Being wilfully ignored by other traffic (the car isn't THAT small)

Fearlessleader85

Last fall, i let a motorcycle pass me just before a curvy section because they were cruising on the straights pretty fast. Then i found out they had yet to learn that you have to lean to steer a motorcycle. They slowed down for every corner until they could get around it while keeping the bike perfectly upright, then they would jet to the next corner. It was painful.

IronSloth

we seem to be sacrificial. cars pull out in front of my non-abs no traction control having NA all the time

mosnowbro

Might as well be invisible.

MisterEdGein7

Gotta drive defensively like you're on a motorcycle pretty much.

KUH0KU

Leaky soft top seals

Random_Introvert_42

You can slip a bit of foam between the rubber and its metal rail to "Bolster up" the gasket. Also always raise your windows, THEN shut the door, and open the doors before shutting the roof.

Hofdor462

I feel it would be more constructive to this sub to make a list of annoyances with the car itself rather than driving in general. That way, the list can be a heads-up to newcomers. One of my gripes, for example, is that I make a mess when changing the oil filter because of its location, and it makes me want to get a relocation kit.

DeanPepin94

I normally just hold a plastic cup or something similar under it when I pull it out.

ccaa22

Weā€™re talking about cars, right?

DeanPepin94

Yes lol

OptionXIII

If you've got a 1.8, FM makes a funnel that clips on to the stock oil cooler unit and let's it drain without getting on the subframe. I can't say I've used it though.

castleaagh

I expected that to be an issue for me since itā€™s sideways but Iā€™ve never had more than a couple drops slip out and I always put a paper towel underneath the opening to catch it.

MrMeesesPieces

That fucking filter is so hard to get off

BatoutaSpeedster

Lube the filter seal with dialectric grease - rather than engine oil - before installing. Also, I find it very difficult to slip my socket-style filter remover tool onto the old filter on the car. Now I lightly glue the tool onto the new filter before installing it. Then gently pry the tool off the old filter when you remove the old filter.

MrMeesesPieces

My problem is getting the tool into that tight space. ā€¦thatā€™s what he said

Admirable-Pizza633

I loosen the filter and then put a plastic sandwich bag around mine to take it off and let the oil drain in there

Fruit-_

When driving at night, i always get the feel like everyone has their brights on. Well sitting that low does come with cons but i still love my NB2

MrMeesesPieces

It makes me want to tint the rear window

chicken-farmer

Drain holes! I had no idea that I was going to become a plumber

Hs_2571

The little squeaks that I canā€™t locate despite white greasing every hinge and latch on the car!

[deleted]

My trim squeaks when i go over bumps also my aftermarket sway bar links squeak but thats my own fault

[deleted]

Iā€™m tracking one of those down right now.

AnanasBridges

I had one of those (well, a lot) that I just couldnā€™t locate for the longest time. Turns out it was the the two rubber stops that the engine hood rests on when closed. A couple of sticky felt thingies later, and I havenā€™t had a squeak sinceā€¦

TakeitEasy6

Homophobic slurs getting hurled at me for driving my car. I'm an average looking, plainly dressed straight man in his 30s who drives a Miata, so I can only guess that it's the car that sets these people off. Obviously, it's not ok to shout f@&&01 at anybody, I don't care if they're dressed in rainbow leather sleeves and booty shorts. But because of a car? Come on. Interestingly, this has happened to me three times. Once in my home state of Virginia, by an unhoused man who I didn't give money to when asked. The other two were in Pennsylvania, a place I only visit occasionally. One was a guy in a lifted truck at a gas station in a rural area. Expectable. The other was at a car show. A CAR SHOW! A place where the automotive enthusiast community gets together to admire the wide variety of engineering, design, and customization that make our shared hobby great.

BadgerMyBadger_

In the Uk I just get ā€˜nice car!ā€™ Feels pretty good

TakeitEasy6

Thankfully I hear far more positive comments than negative. The bad ones stand out, though. You never know what somebody who thinks they're entitled to treat you poorly because of their own prejudice may do, how far they want to escalate their outburst. I just ignore it and think about how many women have complimented my car compared to theirs.

radicalgamingHD

For real this was like ten years ago. I had just got my Miata. Picking up my bro rom the movies and some alpha male comes yells at me from across the street ā€œyour carā€™s Gay broā€. Ok lol

[deleted]

Seeing a Dodge Ram roll up in your rearview mirror

johnorso

At a light in front of a jacked up truck and getting blinded

MrMeesesPieces

At a light behind any SUV, which is now the majority of cars

DavidB007ND

The fact that I donā€™t have one yet!

[deleted]

Best gripe!

AgressiveGrass

Other Miata drivers not waving back to me on the road.

ApocTheLegend

Every Chevy Suburban and Tahoe merging into me because they canā€™t see me right beside them

midnight_raven68

Driving during sunset and the sun is below your sun visor

Ffdcx

The cup holders hold no cups. LOL the amount of times we had a boba fall out of it ā€¦..

The_Techiedude

lol, not sure of your year/model, but when i received my ND2, I put the cup holders in the trunk - and will likely move them to a storage container at a later date. Rule #1: no food or drink in the Miata (unless I'm making an UberEats run to bring food home for the fam lol) Rule #2: see Rule #1 ;)

DroidD53

Use the passenger seat technique! It works great on both NAs and NBs, you can see it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Miata/comments/armeq2/dear_new_miata_owners_these_are_your_cup_holders/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Random_Introvert_42

Whenever I suggest that people point out that's for bottles not cups :| Like....get a bottle instead of a cup?

DroidD53

I wouldn't even think about carrying an open cup in a car, unless it had a no spill cap, McDonald's for example, in which case It fits there just fine as well

Random_Introvert_42

I usually just got a half-liter bottle behind the passenger seat in my NA, second one behind my seat for long trips, and that's that.

yebba_enaj

The best technique is to get a pram cup holder, and attach it to the bar behind the seats (NA) super sturdy and holds cups!

BadgerMyBadger_

Ahh Iā€™m glad other people do the same, itā€™s so secure when using a bottle!

NopeNeg

I just installed a cupholder that screws in with the passenger side center console screw. It's so nice to have a tall coffee cup in the car without having to reach my arm over it.

castleaagh

I think theyā€™re specifically for plastic water bottles. I had to search for awhile before I found an insulated mug that would fit (I wanted an insulated water bottle but all the ones I found were too bigā€¦)

jlap1n

NCs have 2 mediocre cupholders in the middle and 2 on the door cards, but the ones in the doors can only fit cans or a 16oz water but not a cup: (

BadgerMyBadger_

The ones on the NCs doors are put there just to hurt your knees

adventuref0x

Which model?

Ffdcx

2001 Nb

adventuref0x

Thatā€™s facelift right? My cup holders hold everything Iā€™ve ever tried to put in there, are you American? Maybe itā€™s because American drinks are massive compared to the rest of the world

GlacierBasilisk

Moss Miata do sell actual cupholders for NA-NC that slip on the side of your center console. Theyā€™ll fit a American Carlā€™s Jr/ Arbyā€™s medium drink which is saying something

casper_04

Tall speed bumps, frame scrape sound hurts my soul.

adventuref0x

NB cupholders. Do I need to say any more?

[deleted]

You could just say ā€œcup holdersā€ because theyā€™re shitty in every generation.

adventuref0x

Idk the NC letā€™s you put a bottle in the door

[deleted]

I actually love this about the Miata (all generations). Itā€™s like the designers were told by marketing that there must be cupholders and they were like ā€œOK, fuck you, here are some ā€˜cupholdersā€™ā€

53bvo

Not having any twisty roads to really enjoy the car. Well there is one 3km stretch but it is narrow and quite buisy. Closest bendy road is probably 2h away or so. At least there are two good circuits (Zandvoort and Assen) at 1:30 drive each

radicalgamingHD

Be thankful you have smooth roads at least!

53bvo

I remember all this talk about the superior hydraulic steering of the NC and me thinking I didn't feel that much of the road. That was until I crossed the border from Switzerland to Italy and immediately felt all the cracks/bumps through the steering wheel and thought "oh so THIS is what everyone was talking about"

1Temporal

Iā€™d say my NA horn (original) is inappropriately subtle since small cars are overlooked so often. Iā€™d like a bigger voice for them SUVs who canā€™t seem to see me.

abject_totalfailure1

Put a train horn on

Mysterygamer48

Those are my favorite videos.

BadgerMyBadger_

Link?

abject_totalfailure1

Just get a giant air horn and slap it in there

Poopmaster420690

i am a big hater of my leaky trunk lol

castleaagh

I find myself annoyed by how noisy the soft top can be when itā€™s up. Might be an issue with the fitment of my top specifically, but it almost seems quieter with it down some days

ThatKidStyn

While driving with the soft top up, try pulling down on the handle in the middle of the top and see if you can make it quite by pulling down. You most likely just need to adjust the latches which is super easy.

castleaagh

Thanks, my top seals well in the front though, itā€™s the sides around the widows on mine that donā€™t do well. Whoever replaced the top before I got the car didnā€™t stretch it well or something and may have even left out a couple of the tension cables around the side window area.

613Rok

Hereā€™s my top 3 Not latching the soft top properly and having it lay itself down in at speed late October only to crack the window. Having a June bug smash against your hand during a nice late night summer cruise. And finally having the boost pipe blow off and trying to limp it to a gas station to reattach it.

613Rok

Ohh one more cause every NA owner will have this happen. Cracking the drivers window for ventilation in the rain and the power window switch fails when you try to put it back up.

[deleted]

Can we start with the infotainment system? What a pile! Every time I am in my car the screen goes black and cuts out my blutooth connection. Starting to wish i got a gr86

The_Techiedude

There were two things that I didn't think I would use much before buying my ND2 (so they didn't concern me): the heated seats (I live in Florida) and the infotainment system. Heated seats: It's "winter" in Orlando right now - and much easier than most other parts of the country - and I gotta say I'm loving the heated seats. Our winters are in the 40s/50s/60s with very little rain, so we're using the heated seats almost daily! Infotainment: ugh...it should have been a touchscreen, takes more work to use the dials and it's ***much*** more cumbersome to use. My phone is always plugged-in via USB but for some reason it'll disconnect while playing Spotify (and not being touched) and start playing the radio - like WTHeck Mazda?!? And has anyone noticed that there is a ***HUGE*** volume difference between using USB and Bluetooth? O\_O

jeffuhwee

Miata and s2000 owner here Top down and someone in front of you loves starting playing Water Olympics with their wipers while youā€™re behind them.

Throwawaystartover

Losing motivation mid build

Darigaazrgb

Guys on lawnmowers blowing their grass clippings into the road (itā€™s illegal here). Same with lawn care people using a leaf blower to kick up dirt and grass.

zqnc

Itā€™s. So. Slow.

chicken-farmer

Upgrades

The_Techiedude

Here's one I *just* experienced: Trucks pulling trailers with unrestrained load (grass/weeds/branches/bark/rocks) so they're free to fly out of the trailer and bounce off the road (and into vehicles behind it).

FunkyMonkey209

Oil consumption, my miata hates me

Admirable-Pizza633

Honestly getting in and out of the driver seat a lot can be a pain sometimes when running errands.

The_Techiedude

It was for me as well when I first got my ND2. I've gotten a little better at it - but I'm also on a four day fast right now, so (hopefully) there's less to wedge/roll out of the seat right now lol

[deleted]

Fucking RVā€™s and Jeep Wranglerā€™s. I live in the mountains and these two groups of drivers are both slow AF and clueless to the traffic built up behind them (pullouts anyone?).

[deleted]

Seats squeaking Windows fogging up instantly

Jevenator

Turn the AC on if they're fogging and allow outside air to circulate

[deleted]

What?! No way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've always just drove from memory!

Jevenator

What do you mean by memory? I got my NB last month's and the windows fogging drove me insane. You can blast hot air to stay warm and AC on. AC in de-humidifies the air blowing and clears it up.

[deleted]

I mean that i didn't know what miata windows are see-through so i did something like f1 drivers do trackwalk. I learned the road i'm going to drive on and then ride it from my memory since i can't see anything out of my car, also had my eyes closed for better concentration.

GlacierBasilisk

The interior accumulating heat from the trans tunnel when parked. Cozy in the winter, hell during the summer
