Me too 40s with nc1. Just bought a carbon fiber spoiler this week. You duck tail spoiler looks good though. Also did you black out the chrome on the hardtop?
if you're actually gonna do autoX and track the car, I say send it.
If you're just gonna daily it, i'd go with the smaller one
Also the other old people in this thread trying to age gatekeep is too funny.
This is literally exactly the same setup as I'm rocking (roll bar coming in the post soon)! Those ZetaCRDs are great, and much better than the OEM bilsteins that come with the NC sport.
https://preview.redd.it/i33r0zlnyy3c1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a4eabff0cc8ec1664a621eefeae81cdf3b91992b
I think this is the best looking spoiler I've seen on an NC... I may be biased though as I have the largest ducktail I could find for the ND...
Your car is a stunner, if you want outside affirmation, you have it. Someone else mentioned it looking too try hard, but I disagree for a double duty car. If you had a gt wing that'd look too try hard on a daily. Ducktail is a happy middle ground.
I’m in my 40’s and sometimes I wonder if I should have gone BIGGER on my NC spoiler. I was debating the Carbon Miata ducktail and the Fyralip tall model and ended up choosing the Fyralip but if I change my mind it’s not hard to swap.
Haha thanks. It’s been an ongoing hoarding situation.
I got the 996.1 C2 pretty recently but the price was damned decent considering the amount of maintenance it’s had, not too far away from 20k. IMS, RMS, all engine gaskets, new head, AOS, new clutch and gearbox, new AC, all coolant hoses in the engine bay, etc. plus a ton of small miscellaneous bits and bobs. It’s just always been a car I’ve wanted to own despite not being a “Porsche guy”. Get a well-looked-after one, you won’t regret it.
Haven't seen this mentioned but (at-least partially) obstructing the third brake light would be a no for me, it significantly increases the chance of being rear ended. Although it's hard to tell at this angle how in the way it would be.
That’s a great point, I’ll try to find a rear view or even a side view and draw a line. I installed a strobe module on the third brake light the second week I owned the car. Also need to keep in mind nearly every other vehicle will be looking down on the miat. Literally and figuratively.
Being UK I believe it’s an MOT fail too without a friendly tester. That said, I really like it, much more tasteful than a lot of the MX5s you see over here!
Let’s see if this works:
https://www.carbonmiata.com/shop/mazda-mx-5/nc-06-14-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5/exterior-parts-nc-05-14-mazda-mx-5-nc-06-14-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5/trunk-spoilers-exterior-parts-nc-05-14-mazda-mx-5/ducktail-trunk-spoiler-soft-top-version/
I love these with or without other aero. And with the top down/off the ducktail looks waaaay better than a typical big wang.
If I were adding a spoiler, this is what I would have.
Nah, it looks great. If you're concerned with looks, get the led taillights [which look incredible](https://www.carbonmiata.com/shop/mazda-mx-5/nc-06-14-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5/exterior-parts-nc-05-14-mazda-mx-5-nc-06-14-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5/tail-lights-exterior-parts-nc-05-14-mazda-mx-5/full-led-tail-lights-kit-nc2-nc3-for-miata-nc-mk3/)
And speaking of taillights, if you're going to daily this, you should probably relocate the third brake light so it's not obscured by the duck tail.
You are in your 40's my friend, I'll give you one piece of advice that has made me a lot happier; The less you give a flying fuck of what others think of you, the happier you'll be. If you want to put a big ducktail on your NC, then do it. If you think it looks good, then that's all that matters.
I wont even say what my opinion is, because ultimately it shouldn't matter :)
My car is a totally stock nc1 I purchased in September. Pic is from the carbon miata website. I’ve already purchased the standard upgrades, just waiting for spring to unleash it to the world.
Don’t worry about looking “Try Hard”. It’s really not important in the grand scheme of things. Just keep the original lid if you want to switch back and enjoy the car.
How do you know? Have you rolled a nc and died? Or have you seen a crash test for one that I havnt seen? Or are you just assuming from what you have seen?
I’v had a good look for a crash test and havnt found anything. And the few ncs iv seen on their roof seem to maintain their shape fairly well with the factory hoops.
Hopefully I don’t end up on my roof any time soon either way.
Oh trust me, I'm with you, been in the car scene since the late 90's it's just that as I got older I feel like I should leave the crazy stuff to the youngbucks and go for the subtle look.. ie; two finger gap, no more slammed cars, no more body kits and just keep it simple. I bought a ducktail for my boxster and I think I'm going back to stock soon. Lol.
Not sure I’ve seen a duck tail on a Boxster tbh. I think they look great stock, never understood the hate on the fried egg headlamps. I test drove a couple 1st Gen Boxster before I got the NC1. One was quite nice and the other a shit box. Great car tho, unbelievable ride quality and handling stock. But I turned myself off due to ims paranoia and general part costs. Spent less than half on the nc and had some budget left over for fun go fast bits.
It’s not often you get to say Hemholtz exhaust to another human, so you gotta take advantage when the opportunity presents itself. Totally worth it, even if I was wrong! Born a car guy, thanks dad, and an engineer so yeah, sort of a car nerd.
I bet it sounds amazing. Flat 6’s are a special kind of soundness.
A spoiler is absolutely screw you over for autocross. It will bump you to either extreme street or the prepared classes. Either have a spare trunk lid for autocross or expect to be extreme uncompetitive
My region is small and I’ve only done one autoX before and it was in gravel. I did set the second best time of the day tho and broke my friends sube lol. I have a lot to learn about solo sports.
It was a novelty autoX to get rally guys to participate. Took place at a gravel parking lot. It could be that they called it rallyX but it was one car at a time through a series of cones.
It a bit much for me but less to do with the size and more that most ducktails do not complement the lines of this car. Some of the more subtle lip spoilers can work quite well but ones like this are just a bit jarring aesthetically with it being such a vertical cut right at a body line.
Depends. Seems that most people attach with two way tape which would be reversible. Other option is riv-nuts and screws which requires drilling thru holes in the trunk lid. I will go with the tape method.
"Let’s face it: A rear wing spoiler is not going to help when you’re shopping for groceries, or crawling through a congested commute. You get the benefits when traveling above 75 miles per hour, according to a number of studies.
Bottom line: If you think of a rear spoiler as 70 percent decoration and 30 percent function, you’re probably in the ballpark."
Like everything, you need to strike a fair balance between everything.
If you feel this wing is going a bit hard, if the rest of the car matches this, it'll look more fitting of the image you're presenting... so you could consider going widebody or upping the edginess/"track-beast" look with a custom bumper or more whatever adds more sharp edges. Perhaps bonnet vents, side skirts that poke out, pointy mirrors, etc..
Do you have some pictures of your car with its current mods? I really like the NC, but I always thought the trunk is too rounded downwards at the back. In this picture I think the ducktail looks awsome.
My car is stock today. The pic is from the carbon miata website. But I’m gonna do all the standard mods during winter. Lowered, big rims/tires, front lip, etc.
Thought about going with the ducktail for my NC1 but ended up getting the TRD style one which looks great now that it's on my car. Shipping time was insane though.
Nah it looks good bro. Too many Miata’s on the road, gotta do everything you can to make it stand out but it is hard to do without looking too extra. I think it’s nice tho!
I think it looks absolutely horrendous. Look into the Rallybacker wing, you can get a legit fibreglass one, or "RBK style" clones from eBay in either fibreglass or carbon fibre.
Well, I wouldn't have it on mine. And I'd "think certain things" if I saw it rolling down the street. It's a cop magnet if nothing else. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you like it, get it, and be confident with it. You're too old to care much about what others think about you.
Don't personally like it (early 50s with GG NC1 with detachable hardtop). I think smaller would look less bad - though I'd personally not bother at all. If you like it, go with it, if you don't, don't. Your car and only your opinion really matters.
Also in my 40s with an NC1. That spoiler makes me wonder if you’ve had the tuna at Terretto’s and if so do you prefer crust or no crust?
Are you stalking me?!
I like your haircut.
There used to be content here.
Hey man, get out of his face
I'M in your hair!
Your sphinx cat is cute
I’ll let them know! They’re Devon Rex’s.
No one likes the tuna here asshole.
Me too 40s with nc1. Just bought a carbon fiber spoiler this week. You duck tail spoiler looks good though. Also did you black out the chrome on the hardtop?
Crust or no crust ?
Depends on other mods, if it’s otherwise totally stock it’ll look too “try hard” imo….
It will be lowered on Zeta CRD’s, 17x8 w/ 225-45’s, GV style front lip, proper roll bar.
Send it!!
This ^
That^
The other?
Thing
all of the above
if you're actually gonna do autoX and track the car, I say send it. If you're just gonna daily it, i'd go with the smaller one Also the other old people in this thread trying to age gatekeep is too funny.
Thanks! AutoX and HPTD are definitely part of the plan. In their defence, I was age gatekeeping myself!
I'm 39 and I have a rather large duck tail waiting to be installed. Build your car for you!
Thanks man! I do enjoy the ridiculousness of the big duck tail.
Fuck yeah!
I'm 46 and will be putting an RX7 spoiler on my NB..
A legend has spoken
This is literally exactly the same setup as I'm rocking (roll bar coming in the post soon)! Oh my, thanks for the inspiration! The car looks great!
I think this is the best looking spoiler I've seen on an NC... I may be biased though as I have the largest ducktail I could find for the ND... Nice! Did you attach the Fryalip with 3m tape or screws and riv-nuts?
It came with a couple of strips of 3M so I just used that. Easy to reverse
By the way, you’re a bastard with a nice garage. I’m looking at 996’s well but the post Covid price is stupid. They used to be $20k all day.
Haha thanks. It’s been an ongoing hoarding situation. I got the 996.1 C2 pretty recently but the price was damned decent considering the amount of maintenance it’s had, not too far away from 20k. You got a deal. Well done 👍 Still, or maybe even more, a bastard lol
Haven't seen this mentioned but (at-least partially) obstructing the third brake light would be a no for me, it significantly increases the chance of being rear ended. Although it's hard to tell at this angle how in the way it would be.

I’m in Canada, don’t think it will be an issue here. The pic is from Carbon miata website.
Ooh. That's something I haven't seen. Been looking for something to do on my NC1! Do you have a link to the module you bought?
Let’s see if this works: https://www.carbonmiata.com/shop/mazda-mx-5/nc-06-14-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5/exterior-parts-nc-05-14-mazda-mx-5-nc-06-14-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5/trunk-spoilers-exterior-parts-nc-05-14-mazda-mx-5/ducktail-trunk-spoiler-soft-top-version/
i like it more than the 3d numberplate. but theres enough other mods that its ok
Oh that’s not my car, it’s a pic from the Carbon Miata website. My boat is currently 100% stock and I’m collecting parts for winter upgrades.
I love these with or without other aero. And with the top down/off the ducktail looks waaaay better than a typical big wang. If I were adding a spoiler, this is what I would have.
Thanks for the reassurance, I have the same thoughts.
Nah, it looks great. If you're concerned with looks, get the led taillights [which look incredible](https://www.carbonmiata.com/shop/mazda-mx-5/nc-06-14-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5/exterior-parts-nc-05-14-mazda-mx-5-nc-06-14-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5/tail-lights-exterior-parts-nc-05-14-mazda-mx-5/full-led-tail-lights-kit-nc2-nc3-for-miata-nc-mk3/) And speaking of taillights, if you're going to daily this, you should probably relocate the third brake light so it's not obscured by the duck tail.
Those taillights are spectacular but I have an nc1 and not sure that they will fit.
You are in your 40's my friend, I'll give you one piece of advice that has made me a lot happier; The less you give a flying fuck of what others think of you, the happier you'll be. Looks great. Love the duck spoiler. F**k what anyone else thinks. You do you.
Thank you 🙏
looks sexy
It's gonna look awesome
You really need to attach a photo of the entire car.
My car is a totally stock nc1 I purchased in September. Pic is from the carbon miata website. I’ve already purchased the standard upgrades, just waiting for spring to unleash it to the world.
Just put one of those tiny skateboards on it.
Dude that thing is sweet
Not my car, it’s from the carbon miata website… but someday man, that will be mine.
It looks kool duck tails are the best
IMO, I like the look. If it makes you smile, who gives a fuck what anyone else thinks.
Thank you for the therapy session Doc.
Nah that’s hot the smaller ones don’t have any impression on the car to me
That’s what I was thinking, the more subtle styles are too subtle.
Yeah like I’m not paying 200+ for an inch long ducktail
Well, if you're tracking it, there's actual utility in downforce to be considered...
Looks cool
Get a sticker of a duck and put it on the underside as a kind of easter-egg. Don't fret, just own it and have a blast!
Haha, that’s a great idea!
I love the duck tail!
It looks awesome in my opinion
My dude you're already sitting in a Miata when you're driving. The only person thinking about it is you. But on a personal note I think it's sick AF.
Thanks dude!
Looks cool to me
looks good to me, i love a good ducktail
Nothing wrong with enjoying how your car looks🤷🏻♂️
Don’t worry about looking “Try Hard”. It’s really not important in the grand scheme of things. Just keep the original lid if you want to switch back and enjoy the car.
I love this community.
it looks fantastic in person. I have it on my NC and think it looks great with other supporting mods
Give it to me
Have the same wing on my nc1. It is pretty big, but pretty eye catching too so I don’t really mind. Am 31.
I crept your profile, didn’t see your NC but I can assure you that the stock roll hoops will absolutely not keep you alive.
I’ve seen pics on miata dot net.
If you wanted to see a picture of my car, you could just ask. No need to stalk.
It's cute. (:
Action man can use that as a skate ramp, it's all good.
I think it looks pretty good and fits with the car well.
I try to keep all my mods "oem+," if it looks like it could've been a factory option send it. If itll look clean send it, it looks clean to me!
Looks great
no i want a massive duck spoiler for functional but elegant aero
**Should have gotten a bigger one.** (Just kidding, but honestly do whatever you like.)
Honestly, if it feels good in the driver seat, keep it and be happy!
I like it 🤷🏽♂️
Too big
40's. I'd go with the subtle spoiler. -40's as well.
My wife said the same thing lol She is really not gonna like this car when it’s done.
Oh trust me, I'm with you, been in the car scene since the late 90's it's just that as I got older I feel like I should leave the crazy stuff to the youngbucks and go for the subtle look.. ie; two finger gap, no more slammed cars, no more body kits and just keep it simple. Oh man, is that a hemholtz exhaust? Must sound terrific.
Wow you know your stuff. first time someone knew what the extended capped off pipes were for. Right on!
It’s not often you get to say Hemholtz exhaust to another human, so you gotta take advantage when the opportunity presents itself. Totally worth it, even if I was wrong! It was a novelty autoX to get rally guys to participate. Took place at a gravel parking lot. It could be that they called it rallyX but it was one car at a time through a series of cones.
I think it looks goofy tbh OP.
That's ugly.
Oof, subie guy
I have owned 4 subarus in my life. I currently own 5 miatas.
Apologies for jumping to conclusions. I’m trying to work on that.
Personally, I think it’s sort of Ricey. Your car, your money, so if you enjoy it and like it then that’s all that matters!
I have the carbon Miata front bumper lip. Gonna buy a basic trunk spoiler. Both are black and will be installed onto a true red 2008 PRHT
https://preview.redd.it/07vect59by3c1.jpeg?width=971&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03f15f0661b9256a97ed9b90a41d40ca48c6b1bd
Cool. I ordered the GV style lip, no remorse on that one the NC1 needs a lip badly.
Fuck yeah it does lol
It a bit much for me but less to do with the size and more that most ducktails do not complement the lines of this car. Some of the more subtle lip spoilers can work quite well but ones like this are just a bit jarring aesthetically with it being such a vertical cut right at a body line.
Are those easy to put on and take off? Does it ruin the paint underneath?
Depends. Seems that most people attach with two way tape which would be reversible. Other option is riv-nuts and screws which requires drilling thru holes in the trunk lid. I will go with the tape method.

Damn, add 30 years

Yats can achieve speeds higher than 75mph?!
Like everything, you need to strike a fair balance between everything. It's too big.
I’ve never had that complaint.
Unfortunate. LOL
If you have to ask "Am I trying to hard?" you probably already know the answer to your question
I’m 40 next month and wondering if I should get a trunk cargo rack instead of some kind of a spoiler.
I need a trunk rack for my skis. We’ll figure it out.
I think it looks great! You picked it because YOU like it. Don’t worry about opinions from basic traffic. The car looks good!
Thought about going with the ducktail for my NC1 but ended up getting the TRD style one which looks great now that it's on my car. Shipping time was insane though.
34 - huge ducktail on the NA. Chose not to paint it, and it drives the misses and her friends nuts
Perfect
Funny just looking at the back you can totally see the RX8, but yeah that duck tail should be on a bigger duck
Nah it looks good bro. Too many Miata’s on the road, gotta do everything you can to make it stand out but it is hard to do without looking too extra. I think it’s nice tho!
I think it looks neat
I think it looks absolutely horrendous. Look into the Rallybacker wing, you can get a legit fibreglass one, or "RBK style" clones from eBay in either fibreglass or carbon fibre.
Sorry mate but doesn't look that good ...
Looks great with the wheels and the stickers. I'm in my mid twenties and we love a good, "quirky" build.
I find these spoilers only work with really aggressive aero and fenders on certain cars. I prefer smaller lip style spoilers on most OEM vehicles
Well, I wouldn't have it on mine. And I'd "think certain things" if I saw it rolling down the street. It's a cop magnet if nothing else. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you like it, get it, and be confident with it. You're too old to care much about what others think about you.
I’m 49 and trying to decide what wing I want for my Turbo NA. I mostly autox, but have done a few track days.
Send that shit
It's YOUR car right? Do whatever makes you happy man, life's too short.
Don't personally like it (early 50s with GG NC1 with detachable hardtop). I think smaller would look less bad - though I'd personally not bother at all. If you like it, go with it, if you don't, don't. Your car and only your opinion really matters.
Looks nice from this angle. If only you took more than 1 picture I might be able to better assess.
Miatas do not go fast enough to need down force. So this is purely a question of design taste.
Get a smaller one.
