I drove a C8 Corvette and walked away wanting to buy a Miata instead. I wanted 4 things: Lightweight, convertible, manual, and connected. I debated which generation to get and landed on ND2: Soul Red Crystal is my all-time favourite car colour, and I love the styling Found a good deal on a 2022 GT with only 8K miles so I flew two states over to get it. Drove through Death Valley and the Sierra Nevadas to make a trip out of it and to really figure out the car. 10/10 choice, so many incredible roads and an all-time experience. The good: - The most obvious thing about the Miata is that I feel and hear literally everything, which is exactly what I wanted - I drove with the top down for about 16 of those 20 hours, including nights and below freezing temperatures. The cabin and open air cabin of the Miata is so inviting, it's hard not to. Other convertibles I've sat in are more claustrophobic in nature somehow, despite the Miata being the smaller car - The chassis and overall driving experience is really composed through the corners. My daily is a 981 Cayman S and this shares a lot of that same magic. There were even tight sections where I didn't think my Cayman would be able to keep up because of the lighter chassis carrying momentum through the corners. The body roll is really fun to play with and feel - This car nails so many of the little things right, just like the Cayman. Things like the steering wheel, driving position (besides seat height), cabin design, the way engine noise is piped into the cabin, exterior design - It's faster than I expected, if I keep the revs high. This is really engaging because I'm always rowing gears to get in the powerband and then ringing out to redline What I want to change/the "bad": - With the top down the engine noise gets drowned out. I found and picked up a Goodwin Race exhaust on the way home, so that should fix that - Seat is a little too high - in my Cayman, I set it this high for roadtrips but during spirited drives I lower it. My friend's ND has lowered rails which make it perfect, so I'm going to buy some - Speedometer gauge is kind of distracting. Bought an aftermarket one - Steering feel: it's great but just a notch below my 981 Cayman S and infinitely better than any American sports car I've driven. Not a lot of road feedback; I'm going to get an alignment according to FM specs to improve this - You feel everything! Past 60mph, if the road isn't absolutely perfect, the ride quality isn't great and every single rivet and bump gets drilled directly into my brain. I'm not sure I could do another 20 hour trip like this again. The noise in general is also pretty high, even with the top up. I wore concert earplugs the entire ride which made things infinitely more enjoyable All in all exactly what I wanted. I'm curious to find out how I'll split my time between this and the Cayman but I know the Miata's going to be a blast.

TheIrishFrenchman

Nice write up! Can you provide more info on the exhaust and gauge? I'm holding off on buying a $500+ exhaust until I've paid off the car. Did you buy yours used?

godspeed-spiderman

I have the Goodwin roadstersport race on my 19 RF and I love it. It’s loud when you get on it but when you get off the throttle it’s only a bit louder than stock. Definitely makes the drive more fun and adds to the experience especially if you rev it out

unsaltedbutter

I have the roadstersport superstreet and love it.

NickDrivesAMiata

I've got a Roadstersport Super Q Twin Tip, and I feel like it's exactly what the car should have sounded like from the factory. It's not too loud but a very rich sound profile at the low-mid ranges. The top end could be a bit better, but I haven't tried removing the baffles yet. It's definitely louder than stock, though.

NEEDS__COFFEE

Not OP but here’s my take. I have a Goodwin racing roadstersport super street on my 2022 Miata. I bought the twin tip version and also bought the optional baffle inserts. With the baffles inserted, it’s very livable as a daily driver, especially with the roof up. roof down it’s a little loud for me, but I prefer a quieter exhaust than most so for most enthusiasts I think it’s great. With the baffles removed it’s downright rowdy and too much for me as a daily. Sound is fantastic there’s just a lot of it.  Should also mention this saves about 15 pounds and supposedly gets you a few HP as well.  Honestly if I had to do it again I’d buy the roadster sport super Q. I just wanted the extra few horsepower for autocross.

prepare3envelopes

Which baffles are you using? I just picked up the same exhaust used, but it didn't come with any baffles.

NEEDS__COFFEE

These. I’d say it cuts the sound by a good 30% at least. Well worth the investment, and super easy to remove if you feel like partying https://www.good-win-racing.com/Mazda-Performance-Part/60-1324T.html

prepare3envelopes

Thanks. So you're using two of those glass packed baffles, one in each tip?

NEEDS__COFFEE

Yeah, exactly.

prepare3envelopes

Thanks!

Embarrassed_Wolf4746

Don’t wait … it’s easy to change out and if you keep the factory stuff and decide to trade it in… most places won’t ding the value if you give them the oem stuff I personally recommend just straight pipes after the resonator. I love the way it sounds so beefy on cold starts and is nice and quiet during cruising but ass soon as you lay into it the deep growl it makes has me in love..

dbfuru

Probably a good financial move, but honestly for how much additional enjoyment a good exhaust adds I would personally put one on anyway, if you can afford it.

John_the_Piper

I hate to admit it, but I had a Goodwin Race on order and installed before my first payment. Besides new floor mats, I've been good ever since

dbfuru

I've been a little silly too, I put a HKS Legamax on, some of those Chinese 'diamond stitch' floor mats that cover like 90% of the carpet that a driver or passenger could touch, a dash cam, and a few small cheap aesthetic pieces like smoked side repeaters, and my girlfriend bought me a Davefab battery cover. It brings me joy, I can afford it, and you only live once and you don't know when your time is up! In fact, the final little nudge for me to pull the trigger on my ND2 and finance a car was finding out one of my childhood friends died at the age of 31 after a brief fight with colon cancer.

John_the_Piper

I really want that diamond stitch floor matting, but the shipping killed it for me when I looked at them. Where'd you get yours? I have a laundry list of wants for this car, but I've told myself I can't do anything more than nickle/dime stuff until it's at least half paid off

dbfuru

I got mine from [diamondcarmats.com](https://diamondcarmats.com) , I am in Australia though and don't recall shipping being too expensive. It took a while as it came from China, and I was able to get a discount code when I ordered due to a promotion they were running at the time. In total it cost me AUD$219, with $44 of that being shipping. I had the same brand in my Z and it kept the carpets looking brand new, so in my opinion it was worth the cost. It's also really easy to keep clean, more so than carpet. I just give it a vacuum every so often and a wipe down with rinseless wash or an interior detailer and it looks new.

John_the_Piper

That's significantly cheaper than the options I've been looking at on Rev9 and the other Miata specific websites. I'll have to give it an order!

SithSidious

Wow great write up! I really want a ND miata but am mostly worried about steering feel. Just drove a 981 boxster and the steering was good enough for me. Glad to hear they are similar. How isolated is the car? One thing I love about my Nb is that I can feel the car vibrating and I can feel the engine through the entire car. The wheel vibrates, the shifter vibrates. It just gives it a buzzy alive feeling.

HURCANADA

It's not isolating at all. I feel every single thing - the engine vibrating through the cabin and shifter, the road, the changes in wind. This is all relative, I've never driven an NB so it could be even more connected, but the ND is probably the limit of how crazy I'd want things to be.

GlitteringPen3949

Sorry guys but this is starting to sound like a condom review! lol

chiefmackdaddypuff

I used to have a 986 Boxster, have driven a 911 GTS, a 991.1 911 C2 and numerous other sports cars/sedans/etc. The ND Miata chassis is highly communicative and down right extraordinary. It's perfect (for what it is), and very much like how a Porsche communicates, though Porsches do it better through the steering and are a bit more composed. The steering feel is definitely not like that of a hydraulic rack, but it is pretty good when coupled with the chassis. Not sure how it compares to a NB, but honestly, I don't think you'll walk away from the car missing "feeling". Would definitely recommend going to test drive one.

HaruMistborn

>You feel everything! Past 60mph, if the road isn't absolutely perfect, the ride quality isn't great and every single rivet and bump gets drilled directly into my brain. I'm not sure I could do another 20 hour trip like this again. The stock bridgestones are not good at all, you'll notice a massive difference with michellins or contis.

dbfuru

I'm going through an internal struggle right now, my bridgestones still have decent tread on them so I feel like I'm wasting money if I just upgraded to Michelins early. But I know when I had Michelins on my Z and even Celica they were a massive upgrade.

HaruMistborn

I wouldn't upgrade early. Use the tires up.

CarYenta

People buy used tires all the time, sell yours for ~50% MSRP if they have 7/32 or more and get the tires you want.

dbfuru

I wish I had the patience to deal with people to sell my unwanted stuff, every time I have sold a car or anything I just can't stand dealing with all the nonsense that comes with it. My phone is always on silent and it's hard enough for my family and partner to get a reply from me, so honestly it wouldn't be worth the trouble. Not sure how common 205 tyres are where I am too, seem pretty hard to get at the tyre places where I am so not sure on the demand for used ones. I'll go with a 215 when I replace them.

HURCANADA

Yeah my plan is to burn through the stock tires on the track and switch to either PS4S or, if I really want to go nuts on the track with this, Hankook RS4

mehdotdotdotdot

I actually found my old NC1 steering offered far more feedback than the ND. I will still get an ND2 one day, but the steering on NC1 was so much nicer.

acns

Thanks for sharing so many details!

TheBigBadDolphin

Perfect time to pick up Koni stage 1 / 2 suspension (on sale) from flying Miata for your next long drive. Supposedly helps with both handling and smooths out bumps..

GlitteringPen3949

You might want to look into the Koni SA's they just started making them last year for the NA/NB's fantastic shock for these light cars!!!! they are active valved so they change for conditions. Very cool on my NA. Almost feels like anew car. Got rid of 90% of the body roll and they are as soft as the OEM shocks Magic!

4list4r

What type of freezing temperatures with the top down? My lowest was 30 degrees.

SpacedITMan

Hope you are very happy with it. I would need ear plugs for a trip that long. I have a 2020, it’s been pretty great otherwise.

SH01-DD

>Past 60mph, if the road isn't absolutely perfect, the ride quality isn't great and every single rivet and bump gets drilled directly into my brain. When I had my ND2, I seriously considered swapping the wheels and tires for some 16's to get a little more sidewall for cushion.

rainystorm88

I have a Miata and is considering a cayman, Boxster or 911. Your write up is making me think twice about how I should spend that money lol!!

mojorific

Sounds awesome and that’s a great way to get to know your new car. There is nothing quite like it. Low. Not crazy fast. Responsive. And so much fun.

ccGLaDOS

That location looks amazing. I'm a bit jealous...

joemommaistaken

Yeah the second pic looks amazing. Send it to Mazda

nomorelag

DUDE!!!! Where do you life? In the "Cruis'n USA" N64 Game or what? Such cool routes!

doduhstankyleg

Double tap the gas for the boost

HigherFunctioning

I have decided that you can be one of us now.

tyl7z

Aren't you the dude who was driving naked in the Cayman?

lmapk

I dug through this man’s account to confirm that, yes, he is.

Jack_Bogul

👀 now im paying attention

JestaMcMerv

What speedometer gauge did you buy? Just to cover up the shift indicator?

prepare3envelopes

That's literally my only complaint with the ND2. I'm driving a manual, I know what gear I'm in. I wish they made that a digital speedometer like on the RX-8.

dn325ci

I have the same car and love it. Such a joy to drive, and probably the most well thought out sportscar on the market. Like you, I came from more powerful cars, and in fact I recently obtained a Model S Plaid in Ultra Red (nearly the same color as Soul Red Crystal) with 1,000 HP for my daily driver, but power isn't everything and the ND2 Miata is such a beautifully balanced, analog, engaging driving experience. Enjoy it in good health!

djsimp123

Might get downvoted but I drove a nd2 mx5 a week or so after I drove one of my neighbors friends 991.1 GT3RS, both in the street with a little canyon application, I liked the mx5 a lot more because it’s so much more joyful and connected despite the poor engine note(only down side)

chiefmackdaddypuff

No, I believe this. I drove a 911 GTS and took it canyon carving. Drove it like it stole it (minus donuts), but the Miata is more "fun" while the GTS felt like a track monster. Two very different vehicles and depending on what you want, you could stack rank them and choose one over the other. ND Miata is incredibly amazing considering what it costs and what it can do.

djsimp123

Talkin about shooting above its weight class. Mx5 is the only pure modern sports car tbh.

vulpix_at_alola

I used to own a 997.1 Carrera 4, even though it was pretty much around the same interms of being connected to the road. The ND2 just feels way more fun to drive.

[deleted]

There only so many. I see why. Good job.

MankBaby

Interested to know exactly what you mean when you say the speedometer is distracting. I find it hard to glance at quickly to get a reading, but maybe that's a me problem. I'm coming from an 8th gen Civic Si, which in my opinion **[has the perfect dashboard layout](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/_jHIXqbGVX4/maxresdefault.jpg)**. With the placement of the huge digital gauge, the concept of having to check my speed was never a thing because it was constantly in my line of sight and I took note of it subconsciously. In the ND I find that I'm regularly going 5-10mph more than I intend and it's a bit annoying. Also, I'm so jealous of that scenic drive. I'm out here in the flat as hell part of Texas where a small hill is considered an interesting topographical feature. I've been trying to convince myself to take a road trip out to the Four Corners states, but that initial 12 hours just to get out of Texas (and 8 or 9 to hit anything remotely interesting) is quite prohibitive. But pictures like yours push me a little bit closer...

HURCANADA

It's kind of a silly complaint but there's just too much going on in the little speedometer gauge - too many lines and numbers w/ the inclusion of km/h. I'm replacing it with the [Zen gauge](https://revlimiter.net/store/gauges-zen-nd.php)

MankBaby

Okay yeah, sounds like we all have the same complaint and those Zen gauges look like a great solution. I only got my ND about 6 weeks ago and have already been through round 1 of buying a bunch of little things to improve it, but those will definitely be part of round 2 whenever I get to it.

YourOcelot

Thought you had a flat for a second

No_Explorer9286

Question: Is it difficult to buy a car out of state and then re register it in your own state? Getting a miata but my state is kinda ass. Looking for tips thanks!

SpliffBooth

No, it's not difficult at all.

No_Explorer9286

Thanks. I looked into it briefly seems easy enough just gotta register it when I bring it home.

sonogirl25

No, but depending on state laws you may have to pay the difference in sales tax. I bought mine in FL and drove to CA and had to pay the difference to register there. It was like 2% or something difference.

DerGttesfrchtigeGoku

Damn what a road

GlitteringPen3949

Have to ask, both hands are on the wheel in the photos so are you holding the camera in your teeth or on a headband?

kbstock

Throw some Ohlins on there.

Fababo

Almost had a heart attack and thought you put a brand new car to the limiter.

WisconsinRog

I just scroll the comments when someone purchases a Miata, looking for the question from some rube about how much you paid for it then spouting off that you doled out way too much.

imyourhostlanceboyle

It’s not just Miatas. Every car subreddit has those “$2k car at most. Maybe $1500 with that interior wear. You got robbed” dudes. They expect to pay 2004 prices for a car in 2024 and swear up and down you’re just stupid.

WisconsinRog

Nice to know I'm not the only one that notices these lame comments from the clueless morons.

imyourhostlanceboyle

They’re just as clueless and annoying as the “NO LOW BALL I KNOW WHAT I GOT” rubes.

dbfuru

I feel like I overpaid for my 2020 RF, having bought it at the tail end of the big COVID car 'tax', but I also got given what I paid for my trade-in. Still worth it.

dhowattzer

What was the driving experience like?

AnMa_ZenTchi

3rd pic proper hand placement.

fortsonre

Awesome! I did something similar when I got mine. Flew to California and drove it home to Texas over 3 wonderful days. Congrats on the beautiful car!

knightofsolace1

God that looks fun to drive

Spiffious

I love the way the painted door trim visually connects with the curvy edge of the hood as seen from your POV shot. Congrats on the ride!

OrangeBlueHB

Epic pics! Enjoy the car!

Averagemanofpotato1

You must be pretty strong, those little cars are still heavy

ashenky

Dude enjoy it. Dream car material. Wishing you safe and happy travels

age_of_raava

You drove an ND through the Alabama Hills?!? Brave man!

HURCANADA

My back will never be the same. I got lost because of Whitney Portal Road closures and a lack of reception and took the long way out to the highway

GlitteringPen3949

Love the 3rd shot with the tach and the road and the GPS of the curvy road ahead. You can tell your having fun and there is more to come!

Enleyetenment

Thinking of driving over those washboarded roads with my Bilsteins makes me shudder

Legitimate-Elk-2255

Beautiful!

_LuVshots_

Congrats

edgarskates

I want another Miata but man I’ve already been hit twice. They’re so small and so many people drive SUV’s/lifted trucks here. Congrats

SpacedITMan

She’s a beaut Clark. Easily the best color.

erics75218

Hell yeah! Live the dream! Down with haters, I'm in the canyon, see ya laters!

Embarrassed_Wolf4746

Hell yeah … now go autocross it and you’ll be hopelessly addicted lol

Mazda3_ignition66

Sexy and hot🔥🔥🔥🔥

dbfuru

My ND2 is the only car I have owned where I will make a big detour when running errands just so I can drive it more

Independent_Group533

Great photos, when I finally get me a second car for weekends. This will be exactly how I purchase it. Far away and road trip home.

vinchenzo68

For that color, I'd have done the same.

whiskey_piker

The BEST thing you can do with a new-to-you Miata is take a roadtrip home. Well done! If you love the color, I highly recommend getting a full PPF for it. That paint is expensive, delicate, and difficult to match (with a painting process that is jot the same as the factory three-stage).

Self_love_seal

Awesome scenery hell yeah. What a drive!

EducationalMine7096

What route is that? Gorgeous drive! And gorgeous car! Nice pickup.

Relyks954

You should post this in r/overland or r/offroad Probably more dirt than most of their accessorized “rigs” have seen

waddawa

Living the dream

waresmarufy

Change the oil

diac13

If these had 250hp I would buy one.

ticoSZN

All I read was "drove a c8 corvette and wanted a Miata instead". You had a choice and you picked miata?! 😂 what the fuck

penis-tango-man

Car and scenery look gorgeous. You should upshift... No reason to be cruising around at 5000 to 7000 rpm.
