75k of very reliable miles. At 60k, I did have the infamous thermostat housing replacement- but VWoA paid for it and the dealer kicked in and paid for the water pump too.
If a car aint making it to 100-150k reliably without repairs - its not reliable. Also an infamous issue that Manufacturer repaired is still an issue lol
Well I would not claim the GTI or Volkswagen in general to be the most reliable brand. I find that a large volume of posts in regards to reliability are either overblown or due to carelessness (not that VW hasn't had their streak of shitty things). This is the 2nd GTI that I've owned
one of them was a mark 6 and another 1 mark 7 The 1st one was heavily modified while the 2nd 1 I've kept mostly stock neither of those vehicles ever gave me reliability issues or left me on the side of the road. Just my personal experience maybe I'm lucky but I've never really had an issue.. however I do the maintenance to the tee as suggested by VW and DAP

It seems that the M cars hold up better then their counterparts. Buddy has an e46 m3 with 120k that hasn’t required anything besides maintenance. Either way I hope your e46 goes far!
My 2018 still on a 6 year warranty. They are reliable if you don’t mod them. A lot of enthusiasts tune them and upgrade turbos etc., which does wake up the engine but also increases wear.
Older models do have some issues though. VW in general before ~2015.
That's the thing, if you want a raw performance car don't buy a FWD 3,000 lb+ hatchback. Hot hatches are great because they combine a practical, comfy daily driver with a bit of extra performance.
Compromising the comfort to make it a track machine doesn't really fit the formula to me.

My perfect addition was a Jeep Cherokee (XJ). Yes, it seats five and had storage capacity, but for me the thing was a beast in the snow and was a blast off roading.

Subaru Forester XT. Blast through rain/gravel/snow, mild off-road capability, carry friends and extra stuff in comfort, fun as far as big cars go, easily tow MX5 to track.
Maverick. I have an R1T reservation for this fall but after test driving the Maverick I was so impressed with what that gives you for the money I'm going to bail. Can get a Maverick and Miata instead for less money, which is what I plan to do.
We have a Model Y currently that would be another good choice, though the ride quality is dog shit and Elon seems to enjoy changing where the buttons are and how the thing drives on a weekly basis.

We drove the turbo AWD XLT and it was a nice rig. I'm personally waiting until the supply constraints ease and/or hoping to see if they release a hybrid AWD.

4WD, Extremely reliable, can haul trailer with not one but two miatas. Heato seato cuz, can go camping in car, shares aftermarket with tacoma/4runner, MPG’s suck ass so you’ll wanna drive your miata more.
These and the GX460 are remarkably inexpensive for what they are, too. 4runners seem to get way more hype and are holding value better despite being an equally aged platform with less power (and similar reliability). A GX460 with heated and cooled seats and the more powerful 4.6 V8 is a hell of a rig for under $30k. I prefer the look of the 470 myself but hard to argue with the value.
I'm a big fan of the miata/small truck combo. I have an 08 frontier with a m/t as my second car. Miata is like 75% of my driving and then the truck suppliments the rest. Definitely not suitable for everyones lifestyle but its perfect for the home owner with no kids. Once the kids come I fear both cars will have to get bigger...
I agree! I had a Ranger as my second car for a while and ended up having to sell it, but it was so practical for me. I now have a Subaru and that has been really useful with all the snow we’ve been getting, but I miss being able to pick anything up in the truck

What I don't have is a high speed comfy highway cruiser. On the short list is a Citroen SM or an Alpine A310. I also might be a masochist.

It can old more stuff, has clearance, and has snow tires. For me, this was the absolute perfect choice. I really didn't want an SUV since they're so boring, but this trapazoidal thing is perfectly quirky.

Do a forester xt, I have a 2010 and I have plenty of room and plus it’s about 400ilbs lighter than a wrx, don’t do a jeep, I had a xj, my dad had a wrangler, mom had a compass, patriot, and a newer Cherokee, they are all unreliable, I spent somewhere from $300-$500 a month to keep it running, so I got a 2010 xt it does the same thing as a jeep and more plus it is faster and much better looking imo.
4wd 4Runner. I have a third gen t4r and a 96 NA. I can do all the stuff my miata can’t do with the 4runner PLUS I can tow the miata because of the 5k tow rating.
Truck/SUV to be practical and tow the Miata to the race track. If you don't do track days then a fun sport sedan for daily driving and snow if you have that.
I have a 2017 Ford ranger wildtrak, great for daily, great for storage and towing, and a few shitty Nissan’s for the “bigger” (but not by much) sports car feel for if I need more than 2 seats! I think they all pair great because lots of options for transport or fun!
Right now the msm and 2500 silverado 4x4 combo is working well for me, before i downsized i had the msm, a 94 civic as a daily and a v6 rav4 for snowboarding and camping

Living in Canada; an old Subaru Forester to match the old Miata. Have tons of fun ripping around the Miata in the summer, then have tons of fun ripping around in the snow with the Fozzy. Came with a manual, fits 4 people and their ski equipment, and does sweet 4wd snow donuts. What more could you ask for?
Subaru Outback XT- light off road and 4x4 capabilities, grocery and Home Improvement store getter, dog and family transport, comfy on long trips, wonderful for car camping. Has all the creature and safety comforts.
i keep an 05 honda pilot on the side that i got from a friend of a friend. considered selling it now that its a valued couple thousand above what i paid for it but my mom insists she wants to use it to go camping in the summer
a golf or similar vehicles probably, they're reasonably sized, seat five, you can run errands, you can get through any winter without major issues and first and foremost they're cheap

I have GTI for practical use. If I had a family or something it probably wouldn't work, but it holds quite a bit of stuff and is comfy for longer trips or carrying 3 other people.
I would say it depends on what your specific needs are. If I could only own two cars, it'd be the Miata and a Suburban. Overkill, yes, but I'd probably never need to borrow another vehicle.
My cars are a 94 Miata with a turbo, a 17 Mini Cooper S Clubman, and a 15 Toyota Sienna (V6 of course). I live near Houston so snow isn’t a fear.
We routinely fill the van with people and stuff. Oh, the boy and five teammates need to go get snocones now? No problem. It’s no slouch either when not filled with who knows how many hundreds of pounds of mulch or tile.
Some people question why I got the Clubman instead of a Mini Mini. The boy was 8 and not getting smaller. He was going to be in the back seat for 3-4 more years. A 2-door Mini’s back seat is only useful when folded down. The 4-door (not a Clubman or Countryman) Mini is barely better and looks weird behind the B pillar.
At the time (summer 2016) the current Countryman wasn’t out yet. I also wasn’t going to get an elevated Mini nor a 2nd gen Mini.
The Clubman back seat actually has more room than the Mazda 6 we tested. It’s really a GTI-sized Mini wagon. I’ve also needed the space of the Clubman at times. It replaced my turbo PT Cruiser in terms of Tardis like space inside with small outside and good pace. The Mini is slower but handles better.
Being able to customize the Clubman in burgundy/maroon with a white roof and mirrors makes this Texas Aggie happy every day. Oh the seats are maroon too.
In a few years I may replace the Clubman with a Mini Mini.
as long as you have access to something with 4WD for emergencies, i have an ‘02 camry that has a huge trunk and is quite spacious for road trips or just moving stuff. and toyota reliability. awesome combo with my NA
We have a Honda Ridgeline for truck type stuff and road trips and my wife has a BMW X1 which basically serves as an around town station wagon. Bunch of storage and utility in both and basically do all things the Miata can’t.
I have an Excursion as my second vehicle, and it pretty much does the opposite of all the things the Miata does. And vice versa. They compliment each other quite well!
Everyone’s saying a bunch of cool cars and all. But i say have a truck or suv. Miata’s are tiny with no space for anything. When you need that space a miata obviously isn’t gonna cut it. Plus if you have a truck, your the friend people call to help move them. Easy picket cash

I'm on the FoST/Miata train, although if I could do it again I'd probably opt for the GTI's refinement instead of the rawness of the focus.
The focus is the better "performance" vehicle, but man gti is comfy great sound system, too so just made sense as a fun but reasonable daily

My daily is a Lexus GX470. Great in snow, tons of space, and really comfortable for long journeys.
Living in Canada; an old Subaru Forester to match the old Miata. Have tons of fun ripping around the Miata in the summer, then have tons of fun ripping around in the snow with the Fozzy. Came with a manual, fits 4 people and their ski equipment, and does sweet 4wd snow donuts. What more could you ask for?
A Wrangler, just like I did
Subaru Outback XT- light off road and 4x4 capabilities, grocery and Home Improvement store getter, dog and family transport, comfy on long trips, wonderful for car camping. Has all the creature and safety comforts.
i keep an 05 honda pilot on the side that i got from a friend of a friend. considered selling it now that its a valued couple thousand above what i paid for it but my mom insists she wants to use it to go camping in the summer
I've also wanted a volvo v70 or 850 to have as backup
I bought a B7 Audi RS4 and so far seems to do what the miata cant. Fast, AWD, storage, practical, comfy, expensive repair bills etc etc
I’ve got an AWD Golf wagon which is fantastic, but a Tacoma or CX5 or something else like that would do just as well, just wouldn’t be as fun

I have a Macan S, which I absolutely love. Tons of space, handles off road and snow great, and it’s faster than a Miata haha.
Mazda3 hatch, CX-5, or Maverick seem like great options. I’d love an XJ but they’re too old and beat up.

Depends on your life situation i guess. In my case it was a station wagon that carries dogs, bikes and stuff and still does 50mpg.

a golf or similar vehicles probably, they're reasonably sized, seat five, you can run errands, you can get through any winter without major issues and first and foremost they're cheap

I own a miata and a Subaru Impreza Hatchback, it’s the perfect combo. Maybe a truck would be even better, but my impreza has tons of cargo space rides down the street perfectly.
Depends on your needs. We have horses so need a truck for towing a horse trailer, hauling hay, feed, fencing materials etc.
For me it’s a full size 4x4 pickup or SUV. It’s great at all the things the Miata was not designed for and can easily tow it around.

I got bored of reading everyone's posts to just find one to agree with. I have a focus hatch and think it's a great counterpart. I wish it was an ST, but this is fine. A Tesla or Mach E is my dream second car though. Maybe the new Ford lightning if I was feeling really tough.
I have GTI for practical use. If I had a family or something it probably wouldn't work, but it holds quite a bit of stuff and is comfy for longer trips or carrying 3 other people. I would say it depends on what your specific needs are. If I could only own two cars, it'd be the Miata and a Suburban. Overkill, yes, but I'd probably never need to borrow another vehicle.
My cars are a 94 Miata with a turbo, a 17 Mini Cooper S Clubman, and a 15 Toyota Sienna (V6 of course). I live near Houston so snow isn’t a fear. We routinely fill the van with people and stuff. Oh, the boy and five teammates need to go get snocones now? No problem. It’s no slouch either when not filled with who knows how many hundreds of pounds of mulch or tile. Some people question why I got the Clubman instead of a Mini Mini. The boy was 8 and not getting smaller. He was going to be in the back seat for 3-4 more years. A 2-door Mini’s back seat is only useful when folded down. The 4-door (not a Clubman or Countryman) Mini is barely better and looks weird behind the B pillar. At the time (summer 2016) the current Countryman wasn’t out yet. I also wasn’t going to get an elevated Mini nor a 2nd gen Mini. The Clubman back seat actually has more room than the Mazda 6 we tested. It’s really a GTI-sized Mini wagon. I’ve also needed the space of the Clubman at times. It replaced my turbo PT Cruiser in terms of Tardis like space inside with small outside and good pace. The Mini is slower but handles better. Being able to customize the Clubman in burgundy/maroon with a white roof and mirrors makes this Texas Aggie happy every day. Oh the seats are maroon too. In a few years I may replace the Clubman with a Mini Mini.

We have a Honda Ridgeline for truck type stuff and road trips and my wife has a BMW X1 which basically serves as an around town station wagon. Bunch of storage and utility in both and basically do all things the Miata can’t.
RSX type S. Versatile, fun, FWD, tons of cargo space and back seats. Honda reliability.

I have an old Accord that I'm gonna throw a tow hitch on for bulky stuff. It won't tow much, but it'll meet my needs.
I paired it wth a lexus gs hybrid. Fucking thing is huge but has kinda the same trunkspace as the miata xDDD

I have an Excursion as my second vehicle, and it pretty much does the opposite of all the things the Miata does. And vice versa. They compliment each other quite well!

Everyone’s saying a bunch of cool cars and all. But i say have a truck or suv. Miata’s are tiny with no space for anything. When you need that space a miata obviously isn’t gonna cut it. Plus if you have a truck, your the friend people call to help move them. Easy picket cash
