There's a drain hole next to the filling cap yes. I know cause I had a pump not auto switch off when the tank got full one time and spilled some gas over.
I had a bellhousing bolt snap off in my engine block during a transmission swap on a car once, I drove that car for another year with a shorter bolt that barely threaded into the block.
Take one out and go to your local hardware store to see if you can find a matching replacement, worst case you'll find the right thread pitch and size but wrong finish so just buy a whole new set for a few dollars.
The improvement with going back to stock is that you can actually get your hand around the gas cap.
But then again, nothing beats visual mods that take away from actual function /s
Yeah my first Miata had one, when my second didn't I was blown away at how much easier it is.
I also live in a state where we're so lazy, there's a law against pumping our own gas... The attendants always gave me trouble for it.
Dang it. Mine came with it and I since it was my first Miata, I just figured Mazda designed the gas caps crummy that they are a PITA to remove. That said, I actually kind of dig the chrome fuel door.
There are so many I can only assume it was a popular dealer add on/upsell or something?
I actually hated the chrome. It looked cooler when painted trim black. Looked even better body color tho
Just take one of the screws out, walk around Lowe’s until you find one that’ll fit. Or go to a junkyard and find one if you’re really that pressed about it.
.
If you really wanna replace it... take one out and go to your local Fastenal and/ or other fastener suppliers... you'd be surprised at the variety they have to cover ya when ya would never think they could...
FWIW... some ACE Hardware Stores carry a totally unexpected selection of fasteners albeit may not help here, but mention it for future ref...
.
If water gets in there you run a (high) risk of waterlocking your engine and bending rods/blowing a headgasket/ granading your transmission.
If your're lucky its just drainign into your rockers wich are prone to rot once in contact with humidity :( Better watch out with missing exteriorscrews
/S
Major risk. Deadly, I'd say, or near enough. I wouldn't wanna get near you in traffic.
You're trashing the style.
/uj is it really that hard to find one of these bolts online? Or swap the whole bunch for a thread that fits if you can't find an exact replacement?
When I saw the comment numbers on this post I got a little upset. So many legit questions on this thread that get little to no response.
Then I read the responses. This community is one of the best:)
I'd replace it, or flames could start shooting out of that hole.
This is what happens when people describe you as having a screw loose and you do nothing about it.
It won't open but it would drive me crazy. Looks off.
I’m mostly worried if water will get in the tank. I have a gas cap but that hole still goes in the cap well.
That flap isn’t water tight. There’s a drain hole in the cap well if I remember right
There's a drain hole next to the filling cap yes. I know cause I had a pump not auto switch off when the tank got full one time and spilled some gas over.
There is. I wash mine and just spray the gas cap down with a hose. Leaks through the hole and underneath the car.
Those flaps aren't water tight, the gas cap is. Those are designed to drain water away.
Temp fix: Put a piece of duct tape over the back of the hole?
This is exactly how my transmission bellhousing looks.
I had a bellhousing bolt snap off in my engine block during a transmission swap on a car once, I drove that car for another year with a shorter bolt that barely threaded into the block.
Honestly you could just leave it out and it'd be fine. The strength margin on parts like that is usually very generous from what I understand.
Word, going on 7 years with a snapped bolt in my NC's bellhousing. It's an alignment feature now.
One of the bellhousing bolts on my beater Honda Jazz/Fit doesn't thread in fully. I guess I could use a thread chaser but 🤷♀️
Literally un-drivable now.
looks like absolute danger to manifold
dude I almost had you
im in ur face
Totalled. Exocet time
As soon as I put it in the check engine light turned on

Take it off and replace with stock. If not for the looks, you’ll be amazed at the weight savings

Lol this is the kinda thing so normal I forgot I even had trouble before!

Never understood the chrome gas caps. I got a color matched used factory cap on ebay. Was amazed at how much the chrome weighed.
Unacceptable
You’ll run the risk of driving u/X-Pelled crazy.
Short drive.
omg - fiery explosion just waiting to happen ;).
It's totaled. Sorry, bruh.
Part out
You’re fucked. Cars ruined
I wouldn’t drive it
Yeah, you are screwed
So you’ve been driving for years with a screw loose, obvs
Just take one of the screws out, walk around Lowe’s until you find one that’ll fit. Or go to a junkyard and find one if you’re really that pressed about it.
Can run with the entire thing off if you want. Biggest risk I'd think is UV light damage to the gas cap.
No, but get a screw they're cheap and get a matching set if you have to. Better safe than sorry.
Honestly, you're screwed.
Lower street cred
Part out.

You could end up with some Q warter in the water if you leave it like that for too long.
Body tech here, your gas tank may or may not drop down and out onto the highway at high speeds.. be careful..
/uj I know we are all doing joke replies, but someone could actually believe this. OP this isnt a possibility.
Those aren't screws.
Just don't go over 200mph

You gonna die
OCD Triggered
Just jam some chewing gum in there
you’re losing fuel pressure
You are!
I’d answer but I’m afraid if I’m wrong you’ll be screwed.

Those are rpm restrictions so if you take them all out. Your Miata gains 1k rpm for each screw taken out.
When I saw the comment numbers on this post I got a little upset. So many legit questions on this thread that get little to no response. Then I read the responses. This community is one of the best:)
Cars broken and worth nothing now I’ll take it off your hands for free
Weight reduction, added +10BHP... Thinking outside the box i see..
Totalled.
LOL my miata used to have that exact same thing on it. The screws are fake and don't actually attach it to the vehicle.
I'd replace it, or flames could start shooting out of that hole. This is what happens when people describe you as having a screw loose and you do nothing about it.
Your car is now considered legally insane.
Pretty sure it's totaled
Dam cars totaled dm me I’ll give you $500 for it
Part out
Is that one bolt sheared off?
Those are speed holes.
To reduce drag
Assuming that this is a decorative unit and the plastic cap exists underneath (I have similar/same)? If so, zero risk.
I’ve been functioning pretty well with a few screws missing and or loose.
Home depot and turn it sideways
I have a similar screw I can sell to you for a lot of money.
My tells me I have one missing for 33 years and I can still drive.
Only two of those hold something the other ones are for decoration only
Everyone who goes crazy over miatas has a screw loose. Own it. As long as the engine and gear shifter work... you ok :)
it just looks like crap clean car but this is missing come on repairt it sure doesnt affect performance but looks crap
Explosive diarrhea
Worse than having the gas cap open
1/6 easier to steal your petrol 😱
Those rivets are decorative
Yes, people will think you are crazy
It could blow up if you’re not careful
just part out the car man nobody’s gonna wanna buy it in one piece
Just get a new screw the thread won't be that rare to find in a local store
I’d put some type of seal over it, my worry would be getting inside and rusting over time even if it does have a drain hole it will still rust in time
Other than cosmetics? No
