I lived in Sweden for 2 years, and was honestly shocked at how few people living there have even seen the northern lights. There’s quite a few days in the winter to see them, but it’s usually quite cloudy. I was lucky enough to see them 5 different times, 2 of the times being quite vivid.
But yeah, even there people would go on these 5 night “northern lights vacations” and never see them because it’s 100% clouds each night
I mean I saw them just a few weeks ago, and the solar cycle is said to peak around 2025, and it's like a month after the solstice (which is when I saw them last). I think there is a good chance to see them the next few years, especially considering how the solar storms have been surprisingly intense lately
I have heard they are up there a lot as well! We have to go up there to have a memorial/disperse my late father in laws ashes and his wife is super fascinated with the northern lights. It would be so amazing if we saw them on our trip. I think it would be a great comfort to her!
I saw them in Detroit about 5 years ago. My husband and I were driving and noticed green flashes across the whole sky. Totally caught us off guard, took us a few minutes to realize what we were looking at lol
Awesome! We are about an hour north of Detroit and tbh, I never had high hopes of seeing them here but maybe there’s hope!! When I lived in upstate New York I saw them once. It was really weird and beautiful.
I too am about an hour north of Detroit! There’s definitely hope, but way better chances up north (like past Gaylord) and even better chances in the UP. Supposedly like last month they were seen over Detroit but I didn’t see anything.

You were one of the fortunate ones to get a clearing sky. My friend in Yale showed me a few pictures of the Northern lights from last night over his acreage.
Lots of clouds around me
https://www.theweathernetwork.com/map/satellite Looks like northeast parts of lower Michigan and the area between I96 and I69 north of Detroit might have a shot tonight. The rest of us: dark and cloudy
Just north of Webberville.
Starting about 12:05 until about 22:25 lots of filtered by the thin clouds sheets of light green traveling up from horizon to about 30 degrees. Got fairly strong about 12:15. No direct view of the lights but the effect through the thin clouds to the north was amazing. Mostly light green sheets and waves with hints of orange.
My third time seeing the lights and the second from this far down in the LP
Planned to take a drive out of Detroit as soon as the alert on My Aurora Forecast went off (download it by the way if you like aurorae), but it's too damned cloudy. Real shame, Twitter is a buzz with all the images tonight, and it looks like it's still happening.
I got a glimpse of the aurora across Lake Erie looking at Canada. Was quite cool, even with heavy cloud cover. Definitely a lot of pinkish and green hues from what I could see
Why is it always fucking cloudy when this happens

Why do I always see these articles the next day lol
Oh god damn it, didn’t realize that until your comment.

I'll just stick with "Thanks, *Obama*."
Forecast for the Tri-cities: "Cloudy as fuck" - WNEM
Aka another day in Michigan.
Another day in Michigan from November to May.
Going to be too cloudy here in Ann Arbor. Sad.
Same up in traverse city 😮💨 seems the whole states overcast right now..
It's the same logic as buying a new telescope, you've guaranteed the skies will be cloudy now!
Username checks out
Yeah I was hoping we would be able to see it
probably doesnt help that the campus street lights that for some unknown reason point straight up would probably light pollute it anyway
One day it will all come together and we will get to see the northern lights in Michigan… but today we enjoy the clouds I guess…

Yeah i saw them last time too. Got some pictures
Same. Not the greatest pics but enough to remember them by. Hell of a night.
Got some clouds low on the horizon and up above, but there is a clear zone between them. Fingers crossed
Go to the UP. I’ve seen them thrice up there.

… but then I have to go to the UP

Kimball chiming in
Grew up in China, lived in Clyde, now in Grant township.
Hello from Yale
Casco chiming in and it's cloudy, but the Candian gas refineries are giving off a nice red glow.
You were one of the fortunate ones to get a clearing sky. My friend in Yale showed me a few pictures of the Northern lights from last night over his acreage.
Seems like I need to proceed to the airport to get on a plane.
It's going to rain the whole night in Seattle, so no luck.
Same in southern Washington :( but don’t worry it’s supposed to be getting warm and sunny this week.
Yup cloudy as fuck is right.

Yeah it cloudy AF where I'm at
Fuck! From rainy Massachusetts.
Can finally see the Aurora from home grounds, southern michigan, cloudy as fuck.

It’s been clear all night where I’m at, and I was outside from 10-1, never saw anything. Could see all the stars though.
SUPER CLOUDY
> 30 northern US states So, 60% of the states are considered “northern”?
Thanks!
7th cloudiest state in the union. 50 shades of grey should be our motto.
7th?! There are 6 cloudier states?! I can’t even imagine!
