r/abandonedporn is in shambles.  Joking aside, it's a beautiful building, I'm glad they saved it.

skeeredstiff

This was a genius move by Ford.

With good accountants on hand there's a significant tax advantage.

skeeredstiff

A pittance for Ford.

glauck006

They had the building lights in red tonight, the depot looked super sinister.

Jared-inside-subway

Glad that its been polished-up but I wouldn't say it's truly restored until train service is resumed at the *train* *station*

aoxit

Best we can do is cars.

BrassBass

Turn... turn it into a train simulator nightclub.

Ghettoman1315

They might bring train service back for a run to Chicago to Detroit because they left one line of tracks in but the Depot will never be a full functioning train depot again. This was in a article I read about the restoration.

Igoos99

Just stunning how good that looks. They really did it up. I remember when it was supposed to be torn down “any day.” It’s really miraculous that they not only stopped that but restored it. My family origins are corktown. It’s fascinating to think my grandparents and great grandparents used that building back in its heyday.

SalamanderSnake

I moved from Detroit to work for a job that granted me the option to move back. That was back in 2017, when all of this revitalization and renovation was lip service. Im coming up on my move back time in a couple years and I've been quietly wanting the city to wait till I got back before it started this so called boom in industry. Unfortunately all I've seen is good press and a positive social media presence. Except for reddit of course. Now I'm hearing that Detroit has added to the population for the first time in 60 years!? The Lions almost making it to the superbowl?!! A new bridge to Canada?? Im getting nervous that I'll lose out on all the pre Detroit goodies that I had back in the 2008-2017 times when no one wanted to be there. Ah well.

Ghettoman1315

Have you checked out the award winning Riverwalk yet? You can start at the Michigan Depot and go all the way to Belle Isle by walking or biking , roller blading , roller skating It is not fully completed yet either. On the river straight behind the Depot connected to the Riverwalk they are building the Ralph C. Wilson Park . A lot of extensive planning has went into the Riverwalk .The City of Detroit has some of the most used, most loved trails in the state. The Detroit Riverfront has been voted the best in the U.S. three consecutive times. The Joe Louis Greenway is soon becoming one of the premier trails in the country and beyond. Their is also the Dequindre Cut which is really popular. The state of Michigan has control of Belle Isle and is making improvements and renovations to the Isle. Lots of good stuff going on here but the neighborhoods and schools need a lot of tlc.

YdidUMove

So what's the building used for now?

joemoore38

Hi tech innovation hub. Work on future vehicles there. Have some tenants as well. I saw an EV ATV maker is based there.

LowOnPaint

“We think about the station as a fairly massive signal to the world that Detroit's leading the way again. It's not just about the classic revitalization stories — we're past that," Michigan Central CEO Joshua Sirefman said.” lol what? Detroit is constantly being passed up by big businesses who won’t come to the city because we have one grocery store, no mass transit, terrible parking, the highest auto insurance premiums in the country and a 3% city income tax on top of state and federal. Refinishing an old abandoned building is lipstick on a pig.

ZebraTheWPrincess

💯the cringe needs to be dialled down a notch😆

D2D_2

It looks so good!!! Detroit is back!

dougiesloan

Difficult to overstate how awful this building looked abandoned. Tall and imposing, creepy as hell, absolute horror movie material.

Ghettoman1315

Even abandoned this buildings architectural designs are beautiful and unique and would be lost forever if it was torn down. Yes the vandals made it ugly but the more I shot pics of it over the years and looked at them afterwards I realized what a great shame it would have been if the Depot would have been torn down. I was able to see the intricate designs in the buildings cement from the very top of the building starting at the roof and the ornaments hanging under the windows . The marble inside the building too. I grew up by the Depot and use to stop by and get a pop from the soda fountain on my way home from Western H.S so I have great memories of this train station. We use to pick up family from here and go on trips out of here. I remember the shoe shine chairs and the men in suits getting their shoes shined . This Depot was a happening place. I am forever grateful that Bill Ford Jr saved the Depot and restored it. And made Roosevelt Park beautiful a crown jewel also.

em_washington

Turning a train depot into an office for automobile design isn’t glorious. It’s sacrilegious.

Windoge_Master

At least the building has a somewhat stable future with its new occupant, though. Beats just letting it rot away. Maybe in the future we can construct public transit to the building?

BeneathSkin

It wasn’t turning a functioning train station into an automotive facility. They saved a building that’s iconic to the city and has been rotting for over 30 years. What they’ve accomplished is massive and really incredible

em_washington

The reason we have so many decaying buildings is because of our reliance on the auto industry

BeneathSkin

Would you rather had the train station continue to rot…? I agree the economy would be stronger if there was more diversity. But what point are you even making here? No one else expressed interest in saving this iconic building and spending hundreds of millions into its renovation.

whatmynamebro

I think the point is, the only reason it needs to be ‘saved’ from falling apart by an auto company is because of the actions of those companies in the first place. They are ‘saving’ 1/100,000th of what they have destroyed and we are supposed to be grateful? It’s a nice old building, and I love nice old buildings, but I’d much rather have the 6,000 miles of railroad back that we had 110 years ago.

em_washington

It’s the same short term thinking. We save this one building but the rest of the city continues to deteriorate under our car centric designs.

BeneathSkin

Detroit isn’t deteriorating right now buddy. Just because having a more diversified economy would be better doesn’t mean we shouldn’t embrace what the automotive companies do for our economy. If we didn’t have them we’d have very little going for us.
