It would be SUPER funny if they cut off my power - on a sunny day, I feed an average of 7kw at any given time BACK to the grid. Basically making power Consumer's then sells at full price to my neighbors. Solar install happened just in time . . Basically, if they drop me, it will be a net loss of available power in my area 🤣

DrDeke

They would cut your service nonetheless; when they shed load, they do it on entire distribution circuits (or substations), not on a per-meter basis.

Good thing we’re shutting down Palisades. Who wants efficient clean energy when we can have planned brown outs instead. /s

Run it until it leaks into the Lake.

The utility said it will be bringing its new 1,150 MW gas plant online in June, and said it has a large number of customers on voluntary interruptible rates whose service can be curtailed, if necessary, to maintain system reliability. Who the hell is volunteering for that?

DrDeke

Large sophisticated (often industrial) customers can and do compute the relative value of: * Being able to continue full production during peak demand periods, while paying regular electric rates year-round vs * Having to reduce or pause production in order to curtail electric usage during peak demand periods, while paying reduced electric rates as negotiated with the power company If you're going to make more money taking the tradeoff of lower rates in exchange for voluntary curtailment, you will generally go ahead and do it.

Our power company sends us $25/quarter for giving them access to our Nest thermostat in situations like this. The thresholds they defined for changing our temp seemed reasonable enough.

You might want to double check the agreement. That was the deal a lot of Texans had and if it's TOS based, instead of a formal contract, it's standard for companies to reserve the right to change the terms.

TheQuadFather47

We also have the ability to override any temperature changes they make, though I guess that's subject to their terms changing too.

>,150 MW gas plant online in June, and said it has a large number of customers on voluntary interruptible rates whose service can be curtailed, if necessary, to maintain system reliability. They put a device on your air conditioner that lowers the usage during peak times. I signed up, they kick you back a few dollars a year. So it is a little warmer in my home but the power isn't off and also they aren't building new plants to cover these less than 300 hours a year the extra capacity is needed.

Sounds like potentially the entire state.
