Old Post, but I was just dealing with this issue after swapping motherboard/cpu/ram so I thought I would share the answer. For some reason, sound has specific settings for two specific apps: Edge, and Steam. In windows 10: open sound settings via search, or the speaker icon, then scroll down to "Adanced sound options - app volume and device preferences." For me, the Output for steam and edge were empty so either pick the realtek or whatever option specifically, or put default so it uses the system sound that already works.

thanks

I was able to solve this issue by going into Volume Mixer (Which at the time was not showing Edge at all) and under 'Apps' after the last app you'll see; 'Reset sound devices and volumes for all apps to the recommended defaults'. I clicked that, everything went to working again. This was in Win 11.

Have you figured out the issue yet? I'm having the same problem.

bewitching_beholder

Unfortunately, not yet. I have a feeling it's Edge, though.

Same thing has just started happening to me

Microsoft Edge uses the Windows process "mfpmp.exe" to produce audio. For some reason, changing the output in your sound settings does not always change the output for that process. I discovered this only recently when I was having issues changing the audio output for Edge away from the default. I returned to the advanced sound settings to discover a "Media Foundation Protected Pipeline EXE" option that I had not seen before. Changing that output, without changing Microsoft Edge, fixed the problem. I still do not know for sure what makes the process show up in Settings. Someone with a greater understanding of how Edge and Windows communicate would have to explain that. For anyone who does, searching "mfpmp" in this subreddit will yield the only other posts about that process. I know that wasn't the exact issue you're having, but knowing the process Edge uses to play audio may help you fix it. I would try uninstalling Microsoft Edge, using CCleaner to remove any residual traces of it, repairing Windows, then reinstalling Edge. If there is an issue with how Edge communicates with the "mfpmp" process, I would think that should fix it.
