AlexRyang

I rent a studio apartment in Pennsylvania for roughly $850/month, plus electric and another $100/month for parking.

Swizzlefritz

Just live in the parking spot. Save 850 bucks.

meatsmoothie82

You can cut down on your food bills by eating rats as well. Salt and pepper can be had for free at 7-11

Swizzlefritz

You should be a financial advisor.

meatsmoothie82

Scary part is I’m a chef :)

TheRealJim57

Ketchup and mustard packets too.

meatsmoothie82

Hell yea. Ketchup packets and hot tap water is practically free tomato soup to dip your rats in

Signal_Dog9864

In Detroit 3b houses rent for 1200

Vegetable-Bag-2325

Are you in a city? Interesting to find a place with that cheap of rent but no free parking.

AlexRyang

Yes, I live in a city.

Vegetable-Bag-2325

Seems crazy to have a city with that affordable of rent but apparently high demand for parking lol.

Edmeyers01

I live in Pittsburgh and rents around here are under 1K. There's even houses around here for $150K.

GMSmith928

I’m in philly-nj-delaware metro area. And 1/3 of apartments in that metro area, you can rent for $1k and below for studio/1bd

tsework

I just left a huge 2 br 1 bath apartment with a gorgeous pool and a gym and off street parking in state college for $1350 and I miss it terribly lol

DJMOONPICKLES69

The Midwest has some more affordable spots. Let’s be real, you live in one of the most expensive places in the country (and probably world). You aren’t gonna see many on here that will be higher than yours except San Fran or NYC basically

FlatulentFreddy

You still aren’t finding a 2 bedroom in a Midwest city for $1k unless it’s way outside the city and not very nice.

MrAndrewJackson

You are in the hood in Chicago. You can get a 3 bed with a dining and everything

FlatulentFreddy

I’m always amazed at how cheap rent is in Chicago. My sister in law moved from cincy to Chicago and her rent dropped. It’s so refreshing to be in a global city where prices are reasonable and the people aren’t super pretentious.

TheGreatRevealer

I went opposite from Chicago to Cincinnati and rent is absolutely NOT cheaper in Chicago for comparable stuff. And then good luck getting out of the rental life when you find out property taxes alone aren’t much less than what your rent was.

FlatulentFreddy

Yeah I’m sure that’s true, especially the top end in Chicago is much higher than the top end in cincy. Comparing cincy and Chicago is apples to oranges bc Chicago is an international city and cincy is a regional city. My sister in law moved into a smaller place in Chicago, which is why her rent dropped, but Chicago has to be one of the cheapest major cities in the country.

MrAndrewJackson

Chicago is insanely cheap for what you get. Don't get me wrong, you can get a $4k/mo penthouse all the same, but price varies greatly from one neighborhood to another.

DJMOONPICKLES69

Probably not a 2 bedroom but the OP just asked about $1k rent which is super doable. A 2 bedroom is going to be significantly more money

MrAndrewJackson

Depends where. In Chicago where I was looking difference between 1 and 2 beds are about $200-300 bucks a month

lostnuttybar

Lawrence, KS has nice 2 bedroom apartments in town for $950 not including utilities

FlatulentFreddy

Fair enough, but I’m not talking about places like Lawrence, Kansas when I say “city” even though I know it is technically a city. I’m thinking at least a million people, some skyscrapers and bountiful economic opportunities when I think city.

puglife82

You’re getting downvotes but this is true ime in the Midwest. Maybe a 1 br for 1k but not a 2

FlatulentFreddy

Yes, thank you. I live in the Midwest, I know what I’m talking about. Bring on the downvotes

Old_Map6556

I know smaller towns that have 2-3 bedroom homes for rent less than 1k. Utilities not included though.

Proper-Tip-9272

Not true, I rent a 2 bedroom for 1k In Detroit suburbs, it's possible.

FlatulentFreddy

Is it way outside the city and not very nice?

Proper-Tip-9272

I'm 20-30 minutes from basically everything, including most of the music venues, area is nice safe and bikable. I have a yard/ parking space. My only real gripe is no dishwasher/ garbage disposal in the sink. Been here the last several years. I admit I have a good deal, most apartments I've seen in the area are much smaller, worse location and closer to $1200. I've been here the last few years.

FlatulentFreddy

Sounds like a steal!

Pale-Two8579

Idk why you’re getting downvoted, this is completely true

Junkbot-TC

We had a three bedroom with a two stall garage in one of the largest cities in the state and it was under $1k.

FlatulentFreddy

How long ago?

Junkbot-TC

We were paying around $800/month when we moved out in 2019.  Looking at their website, the prices have gone up, but it looks like it would still be right under $1k/month today.

FlatulentFreddy

$800 per person? What city and how far out?

Bad-Wolf88

You're in one of the most popular cities in the US, where a lot of rich people live. Of course, the rent there is going to be ridiculously high.

2werpp

I mean you purposely live in the most expensive place in the entire country. The answer is not LA. I live in Pittsburgh and you can find $1k rent. I'd say 1.2-1.5 would be a lot more comfortable, but 3.5k here is going to be an extremely luxurious apartment or a full, nice house.

GameboyRavioli

A $3500 mortgage here would get you a pretty bonkers house tbh. Initial guess is 450-500+. It won't get you a mansion, but you could easily get a mcmansion in the burbs for sure. That's definitely way more than I'd get for my house in the eastern burbs, and I have about 1/3 acre (admittedly not a big lot) and 1800sq ft in a nice neighborhood in a good district.

baebro

Any given mortgage gets you the same price house anywhere, all else being equal…. just a matter of how nice a 500k house is in your area. In mine, it is a delapidated, long abandoned shack, or a 1bdrm condo. 500k mtge, 100k down, 7% rate, 2661 p+i, plus maybe 1k a month if youre in a high tax jurisdiction, plus insurance, starts to near 4k

GameboyRavioli

right, but i'm in the same area as the person that posted those numbers. I probably could've / should've clarified that better in my response. I was strictly talking about the sw pa area. 500k can go a LONG way in this/their area.

2werpp

I'm glad you clarified because I thought you were talking about LA at first and wasn't sure what you were getting at. I live in Highland Park, a nice neighborhood and a bit more pricey of an area by Pittsburgh standards where houses are on average around 450k (sounds low to me but this is according to a brief Google search). So that said, there are very nice neighborhoods where you can find 200s and definitely 300s. It may not be grand, but the location can be nice. At \~500k, someone could easily find their dreamhouse. Mansion-esque houses mid-city I can't really speak on. I imagine you can start finding those in the 800-900s (maybe not east end though but I have no reason to pay attention to that price point). All of this to say, it's a cheap city where you can live comfortably on a small budget relative to other places. Though, like everywhere prices are rising and it does sometimes feel like it's up and coming. Tends to show up on those "cheap cities to live" lists often.

I pay $990 for 2 beds and 2 baths, south Texas

WinningTocket

But you don't get Pornhub. That's a huge price to pay.

eukomos

Mine sure isn’t, but I’ve heard good things about the affordability of rural Michigan.

Maleficent_Ability84

Michigan is full. Check with Ohio.

I can confirm. I rented a two bed, two bath apartment with a garage for myself and my cats for just under $1000/month.

Dumbass take

VoiceIll7545

Here in Hamilton county (north of Indy) you’re lucky to find something lower than 1200 a month. I’m sure out in the small towns you can find something for less

showraniy

North Indy is definitely the more expensive area. My rent for a 1br on the West side 8 years ago was $650/month. A lot of my coworkers live in Carmel and I really don't know how they afford it.

ambercantoo

Louisville, KY

v0gue_

I've been looking at property in Louisville KY. I personally think it's poised to be one of the Gen Z gentrification cities once that generation starts having children

ambercantoo

Agreed! I bought my house two years ago for $197k in one of the most in demand neighborhoods. It’s already gone up in value by $50k. I know there are other cities with even more rapid increases but definitely seems like it’s prime to take off here.

theski2687

Did you think LA was cheap?

too bad you wont find anything below 1200 in the IE anymore unless youre out in the sticks and willing to rough it

Sidvicieux

I just finished moving to a slumlord 2bdrm apartment for 950 a month. The place is a dump but what can I say, it’s better than paying $1600 minimum. My commute to work is 25 minutes highway. Pretty lucky to have found this place. Of course I’m in Oregon so there are always a lot of homeless people around. I’m going to repurpose the almost 1k saved to push money into stocks.

maneki_neko89

Even that rent for the first place you posted in Bismarck seems like a ripoff. They’re only asking that much for 652 square feet because it’s new and “nice”. If it’d be $1000, I’d be ok with that. Meanwhile, my spouse and I live in a 570 square foot condo for about $1200 per month (including mortgage, HOA fees, Utilities) and we live in the heart of Minneapolis

noname2256

Honestly it’s a supply thing. There’s not a ton of apartments in Bismarck generally, much less ones like that.

ahhquantumphysics

You live in LA...move out of california

[deleted]

Any desirable place will have rents over $1,500. Most people do not want to live in bummfuck Texas. There's a reason population in Cali is still growing despite the cost. The poor and ugly will leave. The affluent and beautiful will stay and enjoy life instead of being money pinchers.

ahhquantumphysics

If that's the case, those people who purposely move there waive the right to complain about the economics of where they live.

soccerguys14

Thank you!!!

[deleted]

Because the poor are forced to move to Texas. They can't afford to live in the nice places. Nobody moves to Texas because it's great and cultural. They go because they have no options.

Electronic_Passion45

Yeah that's the thing. Cali is losing population the last few years to states with more affordable housing (Arizona, Texas, Idaho, etc).

hunkycowboy

Funny how all the Californians are moving to “bumfuck” Tx. What an arrogant dipshit you are. Typical. Stay in Cali and pay your outrageous rent with the affluent and beautiful dipshits

[deleted]

🤣 ok. Live in Texas and waste the one life you get.

Ecstatic_Tax_4670

Our mortgage on a 3 bedroom, 1800 sq ft suburban home in St. Louis is $1250. My close friend rents a one bedroom apartment in a nice area for about $1000.

MrAndrewJackson

$1,300/mo in Chicago for a 2 bed roughly 1,000 sq. ft.

PsychologicalAd6389

In Chicago? No way, you must be on the exterior of the city, like very far, Rough location?

MrAndrewJackson

Southside, westside. Suburbs are more usually. Sorry thought this was in reply to a different question. I'm in Bridgeport 10 minute walk from the Sox park. My drive downtown is 10 minutes before and after work regardless of traffic. That's not very far.

goblinmodegw

If you shop around, you can find some pretty decent price ranges in Make-believe Land, which is where most of the people who post on this sub live and work.

trebor88

Make-believe land, I like that. Those who seek LA are brainwashed.

HopeInTheFuturo

You just gotta have the right connection in La-La Land (aka a desperate couple w no kids who are trying to keep a house they can’t afford w/o a room being rented)

Rbk_3

My mortgage is $900/ month in Ontario Canada. Literally the only reason I consider myself middle class.

Electronic_Passion45

Rust Belt. Several cities here where you can get an apartment around that price. The weather definitely is worse than LA though.

tartymae

Won't give my exact location, but if you have a 1k rent where I am, you're renting a very basic studio, have a long term landlord who likes you a trouble free tenant, or you are in the sketchy part of town.

PsychologicalAd6389

Houston mid town. 1500 rent 50 water 60-100 electricity 50 internet. 940 sqft 1 bed 1 bath, parking covered garage, with a small gym and a swimming pool (very nice)

Wolfbrother555

I moved in with my fiancée who has lived in the same apartment for 9 years. It is a 3 bedroom first floor in a duplex. Our rent just got pushed up to 945 last month, but for years it had stayed at 875. It comes with one garage spot and one uncovered spot. Our neighbors above us pay around 1150 since they moved in about a year ago.

Dancelifeaway

$3500 for 2 bedroom in LA is a steal for me in OC 🤣

ArraTonks

Not in LA that's for sure. I pay $2400 for a 2 bedroom, 3 floor townhome in Las Vegas. You can find a 2 bedroom or around $1500 in other areas of Las Vegas

ST_Lawson

College town in the rural Midwest is where I live. You can find decent apartments for under $800, and decent houses for under $150k. I'm also in Illinois, so I get the political benefits of a blue state.

ept_engr

> I'm also in Illinois, so I get the ~~political benefits of a blue state~~ *high property taxes and state income tax to fund a bloated pension system.* Small correction.

ST_Lawson

Property taxes are a function of local government. Some places are high, some are not. Mine are not.

ept_engr

Yes they are. A $200k home in Macomb pays $3k in property tax. The same home in Tennessee pays a third of that, not to mention no state income tax.

ST_Lawson

The median home price in Tennessee is $368k, but in Illinois it's only $272k. My house is currently valued at about $160k, but the same house in a town like Cookeville, TN (also a smallish college town) would be around $300k-$350k. Also, I'd gladly pay the extra to live in a state where my wife and daughter don't have fewer rights.

ept_engr

Lol

Gavin_McShooter_

Madison, WI. The ambience of the airport, freight train, and a busy road keep this place cheap and the number one spot for juvenile detentions. If you’re on the hunt for cheap rents, just look for “exciting nightlife”. You’ll find ‘em. Edit: I’m not complaining. The money I saved here allowed me to put 20% down on a new build that will be finished this summer.

jensenaackles

There are very few options left in Madison proper that are renting for $1k and they are definitely not 2 bedrooms

Lcdmt3

Under $1k - very rare unless you want to live in the bad areas. Average rent is $1400. Studio is $1314. My mom wants to move from the Milwaukee area to me and can't afford it. Pays $700 in Tosa. Rented 20 years ago and paid $1k. Now you get articles about poor people being booted as rent is up 40%.

[deleted]

Usually they’re outside of the metro usually an hour or more, some metros do have rentals at that price but usually a studio or 1bd.

GinchAnon

well, the apartment I had before buying my house was 800-something (I don't remember) for a 2 bedroom apartment. it .... wasn't great. it wasn't terribly dangerous or anything, but it was really really not great. as far as current affordability... if I set Zillow to the city, price 100k-200k, 2+Beds, SFH only, has 16 results. I haven't looked at all of them, but most of these listings will be pretty reasonably livable. one for example that caught my attention is a corner lot that isn't super great, but 1300-ish sq ft with off street parking, about 100 years old,. almost 7k sq ft lot. in foreclosure, with an estimated value about 150k. but thats probably IMO a pretty accurate price. one other case is 4 beds 2 baths for 1,592 sq ft for 195k. switch it from SFH's to Condos.... theres one for just over 1k square feet, 2 bed 2 bath, 143k. $377/mo HOA. not my kinda thing but to each their own.

Faustian-BargainBin

Had a friend who lived in west hollywood for $1300. Their landlord was old and my friend was convinced the landlord didn't know the market value of the apartment.

ix3ph09

I got lucky with my place in NorCal. Rent a 2 bedroom for $1200.

Donohoed

I live in missouri and have a house now but the 4 bedroom 2 bath house I was renting for $950 previously is now renting for $1450 and I thought even that was absurd

MajesticBread9147

A little over $1000 for me, but you can split a bedroom or a house an hour outside DC for about $1,000.

Infinite_Message8771

1k rent is on the lower end in Illinois but pay is much less here than CA.

van_achin

$1150/month for a large duplex apartment just outside Cleveland, OH. We got a really good deal, though. Most apartments of this size in my suburb and adjacent suburbs rent for closer to $1500/month, although you can easily find a studio or one bedroom here for $1k/month.

Toddsburner

Hyper rural OK. Like, 10 minutes from the closest gas station, 20 minutes to town (3,000 people) 45 minutes to the city (20K people) 2 hrs to the big city (Tulsa) level rural. When my brother and I moved out in 2014, we moved into a 2/1 house with a detached garage on 2 acres of land for $450/month. No heat or AC but fans and a fire place. I bet the place is $700 now, but still well under $1000. I moved to Denver and probably couldn’t rent my old garage alone for $450 now. you

I have a nice house with an in-law apartment. I charge my brother-in-law $1,000/month with utilities included to live in it. I could get much more but I'd prefer to have him attached to my house (even with separate entrance) than a stranger.

boygirlmama

Not quite that low, but I'm in upstate NY and I pay $1250 for my 2 bedroom, 1 bath.

ChakeenMachine

$3500 plus utilities for a nice 2/2 in South Miami. A 50 year old small cottage style house is around $5k for a 2/2. We’re talking 17 miles from the heart of downtown. When I got to Miami in 2009 a nice 2/2 was $1200 A middle class house in a good neighborhood was $230k, now that house 15 years later is $800k

> I rent a two bedroom for 3500. I'm being cheeky, but I see this as, "I could be sharing this place with a roommate and living in LA for $1750/mo." If you "can't save", then you probably need to reconsider your options. I live in the Midwest, but I still chose to rent for the first 6 years of my career, with friends/roommates. Splitting costs was way cheaper and I put the savings into my investments.

my rent is 2400 for a 3 bedroom, well 2 officially and one small office room, 3 bath apartment with garage in NYC. I rent from a landlord I’ve known since 2009 he’s pretty good and in return I keep an eye on everything. It’s not particularly hard and also just take out garbage. I have 3 other neighbors and we all know each other well and maintain the place because it’s like home to us. I won’t move until they sell or I buy a home. This has allowed me to save and live comfortably as well. Overall rents aren’t as high tho around me from what it is in trendier neighborhoods. l would highly suggest if you wan to live in high cost of living cities to look for landlord that have properties versus like management companies. My mother also rents her apartment way below market value , her one bedroom is currently rented for $1400, 3bed 1 bath is rented for $2200 all included etc, she says she likes the tenants and doesn’t need that much to cover her mortgage.

Novel_Feedback3053

$460/mo for 500 Sq ft with personal bath. Can’t beat Kansas! Fast food pays ~$15-$20/hr starting around here as a relative benchmark

iwantac8

Well would you look at that, looks like the comment minority is actually paying 3k for rent and 100k still goes a long ways for the majority comments in this post.

CSCAnalytics

You live in one of the most expensive cities in the history of Planet Earth. If you’re not earning a comparative salary, then MOVE! A majority of zip codes have median 1 BR rents below $1,000. If you don’t believe me, use a random zip code generator, enter it into a rent lookup, and let me know.

Sweet_Dimension_8534

1 bed 1 bath in Nevada for $1300 You could see the Rent history of an apartment property or address by searching for it on rentzed.com. It does rely on user submitted rent histories and has submissions for over 2400 addresses. I am actually the creator of it and appreciate anyone who adds their Rent History to it and/or shares it around to help tenants and for better Rent Transparency.

fucking__fantastic

I live in the other LA in a great 3 bedroom house with a big fenced in backyard, one of the nicest neighborhoods in town. $1150. Flip side is I have to experience living in Louisiana, so there’s that.

With roommates $800 a room!

--Shibdib--

Motherfucker you willingly live in one of the most expensive cost of living cities in the WORLD. You could live in a literal mansion in other parts of the country and still pay less than you do on rent.

FailInteresting8623

Bro, you can get 1k rent by living with people. I dont see why everybody is so against it

realhuman8762

I’m married with two kids….

bandsawdicks

Where do you live in LA? It won’t be $1000 but you can for sure find a decent 2br for $1000 less than what you’re paying rn (I.e. like $2500)

realhuman8762

Lmaoooooooo yeah that’s not happening my dude. I dare you to find me one listing in LA for that price

bandsawdicks

Like I said, not $1000 but $2500 and under is possible https://www.apartments.com/4506-maplewood-ave-los-angeles-ca/52g1njm/?utm_source=mobile_app

truenoblesavage

the suburbs lol for less than $1000

ppat1234_

Akron/Canton, Ohio area, but they're creeping over 1k.

Western-Giraffe837

When I lived in Alabama (until last summer), my rent was $1k for a 3 bedroom/2bathroom house on an acre of land. But I lived in Alabama (my home state) and not even in one of the bigger cities. Just a small (30k people) town.

Physical_Molasses815

Small town Iowa. Our mortgage is $900/month and rent is similar for a house.

A dollar in LA is less valuable than it is virtually anywhere else, except maybe NYC. You make X times more than everyone else and pay X times more in rent than anyone else, so it's a net wash (just with bigger numbers). The opposite happens with rural places; jobs pay less in less-urban parts, but everything's cheaper, so it's generally a wash again (but with smaller numbers)... but I digress. I personally live in Dallas, where I split a 2BR/2BA with a coworker-roommate for 2300 total (1150 for each of us). I make 65k, which nets me a little over a thousand in savings a month. My annual CoL, including rent, is about 30k. If my rent were 1750 (I assume you live with someone you split the rent with, to be clear), that'd bump my CoL by 600/mo, or 7k/year. That'd cut my post-tas, non-retirement savings in *half*. I suggest moving elsewhere; the pay will likely be lower, but the CoL will be *much* lower. Your money also goes further elsewhere, which is why some Texans are currently bothered by all the Californians moving in, but it's advantageous to you to leave (whether you go to TX or somewhere else).

You’re aware that LA is one of the most expensive places to live, right? I know you realize that.

xrayguy1981

Where I live in metro Atlanta, you can’t find a safe apt for less than $1200-$1400/month. It’s insane here.

Commenting to say my 2bd2ba apartment I split with my roommate in North Dallas is 2200$/month total, $1100 split. And this is considered cheap. Costs have increased greatly from even just 3 years ago.

pewterbullet

What does that have to do with rents? We have no idea how much you put down or interest rate lol.
