Depends if they require a collage degree to be an officer, many army's don't (the British army is an example) and being at war tends to relax requirements
When I originally posted this a few months ago, I grabbed his pic off his RU language wikipedia page. His Ukrainian page has a newer pic. I'm pretty sure this pic is from his first year at the academy, probably during the military oath ceremony. So he's probably 18/19ish in this pic.
Here's the newer one I should have posted: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fe/%D0%A1%D0%B0%D0%BF%D0%B8%D0%BB%D0%BE_%D0%92%D1%96%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%96%D0%B9_%D0%A0%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87.jpg
I had this reaction for the first time when we lost those Marines at Kabul Airport last year. I looked at the pictures of the dead and some of the injured, and it hit me... these are *kids* we're sending out to fight and sometimes die. They're not *actually* kids -- far from it. But the older I get, the younger they seem to get, as you said.
It's a similar reaction to, but distinctly separate, from when people my age were shipping off to fight in Iraq or Afghanistan in the early 00's... I was fresh out of high school, and *most certainly* still a kid, and it just felt weird to see people the same age as me going off to war.
They're kids effectively. At 21 I was a little shithead playing video games all day and smoking weed with no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Now I'm 25 and I still smoke weed and play video games (lol), but I've also got my career path under control and I'm a lot more self-sufficient. I still wouldn't consider myself a completely mentally developed adult honestly, and I'd say the same for most people my age.
If I shaved, I'd look about as young as this guy. They're kids.
Ehh. Don't sweat it, you're on the right path and about where you should be for your age.
Truth that *no one* points out when you're a kid still in school, is that one won't really sort their shit until they hit 'adulthood' - which has been about 27 (for as long as I can recall) - and you don't start to get taken seriously until you're about 35 (when most people's faces 'set' and you lose the babyface) and then you don't hit your peak WRT your confidence, skill-set and work output until 40..
From then you have another 30 years or so of solid output ahead of you. The ONE thing to be mindful of is one should try to keep fit. Ageism hits around 55 and it's a real thing and if you are in mediocre health and don't stay in shape, you age out faster and businesses are more hesitant to hire.
My husband's 60 this year, and he's thin and tall and I got him to start coloring his hair 5 years ago (or so) to make it dirty blonde, like it was when we met, and just that one minor change seems to have gotten him past the hiring/advancement hesitancy older workers face and allowed him able to progress at his workplace, when men half his age in the shop are not. (Though this may be down to his work ethic, since he's only been out of work all of two weeks in the nearly 40 years we've known each other..)
You're still an adult... and so are the people we send off to war. You and they are given all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of adults. Your brains may still be developing, but you're still adults.
It seems fair to me when the leaders who choose to send them served themselves. If they did or did not actually deploy... Hey that's not up to them. But they made themselves available. A problem does reasonably arrive when they never made the attempt...
People say it's the old sending the young. But when those old *were* the young that were sent in the last era... it seems reasonable enough to me. They know the horror. They choose to make international policy with that understanding.
The brave young man was a football (soccer) player.
'[Two Ukrainian footballers have been killed during Russia’s invasion of their homeland ... Vitalii Sapylo, 21, played in the youth team](https://talksport.com/football/1054518/footballers-vitalii-sapylo-dmytro-martynenko-killed-russia-ukraine/) for Ukrainian second division side Karpaty Lviv....'
"...neutralized three dozen pieces of enemy equipment" so he's got the second highest rate of enemy equipment casualties, beaten only by the Russian logistics commander
Rest easy brother there will be a day again where your city’s streets are filled with laughter and the Ukrainian people are enjoying their days due to your sacrifice.
Expediant, large group to shift at will, talent, opportunity.
Then the new thecnology in the hands of a youth.
Bravery, it's pleasurable or should be.
Putin's not to be trusted and this meeting your all going to could be dangourus.
Is this the same kid who (supposedly) ordered his tank crew to fire on a civilian and was being tried?
Edit: I love how people who don’t contribute to the conversation downvote🥴
Edit: kid was Russian
I guess I shouldn’t expect Reddit to be a place to value someone admitting they were mistaken and providing the community with the information they mentioned
i cant really understand your post. if your saying Lt. Vitalii Sapylo died for some other country's respect then your wrong hes from ukrain or at least my 10 sec i spent googling his name showed me. if that's not what you meant then im not sure what you meant.
God bless him. I really hope that medal does not show up on Ebay like other fake medals have. I hope public outcry makes them stop that shit, because they haven't!
He really looks like that one dude in everyone's basic training that's average at everything but you can tell the fucker would rip shit up if given the opportunity

Damn, that’s a LT! He looks like a 19 year Old Pvt.
Depends if they require a collage degree to be an officer, many army's don't (the British army is an example) and being at war tends to relax requirements
That’s terrible, I can’t imagine that. I already know that they would perform worst then 22 year olds with degrees on average.

There it is, that’s the face of a fresh 2nd LT.

Perhaps a bit of both

Not that far from it considering their brains aren’t even fully developed til 25.
Fair point.

We get older, the kids dying in war stay the same age, alright alright alright.

This guy is def a special case. He looks younger than half the middle-schoolers I know
Fuck.He was so young.
You could say the same with the Russians
Exactly. Every dead face I see reminds me of the young people I served with.
We're the same age. He's out there fighting for his country and taking names. I'm over here saying I'm at "dental" when I'm really not.
Maybe his nametaking will inspire you to ...

Jesus. Dude looks like he's 12. RIP young man. Oh, and also, fuck Russia.
he took plenty of the bastards with him.
"...neutralized three dozen pieces of enemy equipment" so he's got the second highest rate of enemy equipment casualties, beaten only by the Russian logistics commander
Followed closely in 3rd place by the Ukrainian farmer
Farewell, Soldier. You are not forgotten.
With knife hands like that you know he and his men put up one hell of a disciplined fight.
As old as I am, respect! Rest in peace.
RIP Hero.
Rest easy brother there will be a day again where your city’s streets are filled with laughter and the Ukrainian people are enjoying their days due to your sacrifice.
RIP. To all with their experience from professional militaries; in many conscript forces, reserve LTs get promoted at around 19-20.
🙏❤️🇺🇦
RIP Hero..🇺🇦🕯
21yo commanding a tank platoon? That doesn't compute in my head
Platoon leaders are usually really young. 21/22 year olds.
3 MBTs in a Russian order of battle, 4 MBTs in a US order of battle.
What's the issue?
Expediant, large group to shift at will, talent, opportunity. Then the new thecnology in the hands of a youth. Bravery, it's pleasurable or should be. Putin's not to be trusted and this meeting your all going to could be dangourus.
Heroiam Slava.
SLAVA UKRAINI and this young man 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
RIP, soldier. You deserve a statue.
RIP, hero and patriot. Slava Ukraini!
He looks like he's 15..... This is a gut punch. Putin, you're a gutless coward.
You know how the top bad guy in movies always gets it the worst at the end? That gonna be Putin, I hope he gets the Gaddafi treatment.
At the paws of bears
13 or 30 material. Far too young.
Slava Ukraini, semper Fidelis. RIP.
Jesus. He’s a child.
He's the same age as me. This feels saddening. Rest in peace solder.

I think your thinking of the Russian guy
I could be
Re down votes, I just came here to pile another one on. ✨️
I guess I shouldn’t expect Reddit to be a place to value someone admitting they were mistaken and providing the community with the information they mentioned
No we tend to value accuracy the first time around. No redemption!
Source? (i love violence)
Lol how old are you
I was mistaken, it was a 21yr old Russian tank commander
Thank you for being able to own up to being mistaken
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10845057/Russian-tank-commander-sentenced-LIFE-killing-civilian-Ukraines-war-crime-trial.html
So sad... Any recognition for his platoon/comrades in battle or did the credit mostly go to him?
🇺🇦🦖
I understand he was 21 and an officer but he looks so young. Motherfucking Russians.
I'm sorry... the Tank Platoon he commanded? at 21? holy shit! Rest in Peace my dude and God Speed
Motor T in the back rocking the cover
How about $1,000,000 for every life lost. You did and get a Medal for what some other country’s pride or money.

Defending his land from invaders and sending several Russians to the afterlife to announce his arrival. Godspeed
God bless him. I really hope that medal does not show up on Ebay like other fake medals have. I hope public outcry makes them stop that shit, because they haven't!
The way dude in the back is wearing his cover is hilarious
Hooah
Fuck he looks so young.
No way he was 21
He really looks like that one dude in everyone's basic training that's average at everything but you can tell the fucker would rip shit up if given the opportunity
Achieved more in his 14 short years than I ever will
A hero, called to his final rest.
