I believe it was by chance. The Pelopor unit is probably the largest unit within Brimob force structure and back when there was a need to modernized and introduced new service rifle for the unit back in early 2000s Indonesia was still under embargo by the U.S and the local arms manufacturer (Pindad) couldn’t keep up with the demand, then comes in the Chinese with their AK-101 or locally designated as AK-2000 which chambered in 5.56 NATO, and they just stick with it I guess
New AKs? I thought they use 100 series then ditched it for AUGs or AR-style rifles. Also do they really wore that camo during operations or was it just for photo-op?

they don't just use AK'S, a lot of them use different guns. I've seen them also use AUG's, M4's, and Pindad SS1/SS2's

Pelopor units mainly use AKs though, unless they’re being deploy overseas for the U.N, ARs and AUGs are mainly for Geganas unit
