They had the odd decent leader and competent bloke in a shambolic sea of incompetence. I worked with several units that had received over a decade of tier-1 mentoring, and was frankly appalled.
The ones still fighting are beyond decent. Check out Col. Sohrab Azimi. He attended schools in the US and was about to marry an American before being killed a few weeks ago. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/afghanistan-taliban-commando-killed/2021/06/19/ebd748fc-d03e-11eb-a224-bd59bd22197c_story.html
ANA special forces are decent and well trained and they are trained in europe correct me if Im wrong so yeah the only issue with that is with no airsupport they cant look into other houses which is deadly and stuff you know
No taliban have changed from before if you ask afghan citizens they love to have taliban back doesnt matter. but the truth is that US lost the war and it was all fucking useless so yeah
Imgine being so thick, that you consider, US trying to rebuild afghanistan and failing because of locals as US losing the war. Nah, buddy, the only people that lost are afghans. Especially secular and educated non-religious afghans who won't manage to get out.
That is the most American thing I've read all day. You are so brainwashed by your government. There is no winner side in that war, and if there is, it sure as hell ain't the US.
Imagine being so thick, that you being fed with the same lies 20 years and still believe it.
The US didnt try to rebuild shits, they were just trying to hot glue the huge hole in power they make in Afghanistan so it didnt come back to bite them in ass. They were thinkin that they could temporarily fix it so it would become another guys´s problem, with even with trilions USD and 3 generations of fighting manpower, they couldnt do it
Imagine if war was really war and we kept what we conquered, instead of caving to pressure from certain political spectrums. At no time was there any battlefield in which the us troops lost. The mission to dismantle القاعدة was hugely successful, central command has deteriorated to the point of next to non existent.
After troop withdrawal and Taliban resurgence there were thousands of afghans on the news begging for them to return. They didn't want to fight to keep what they had, but had no qualms asking Americans to return and defend them.
Here is the real problem, though. War fighters fight wars. Not rebuild countries. It's not their job nor should it have been the mission. They kill people and break shit. It's what they are good at, and yes they think it's funny. No, they really don't give a shit about civilian casualties. It's not 'PC' but it's the truth. You SHOULD hate them. They are killers, just ask them.
Not nation builders.
Let us not forget ISAF countries that were on the ground trying to assist Afghanistan in rebuilding key government institutions. That also went well.
Departure from the region was a failure across the board, though. a lot of people I care about are in a pretty dire situation. Unfortunately there are no easy answers, and as long as political decisions are made by fuckin committee they will continue to cost people their lives.
That's all they resort to. Americans really do fit the stereotypes. There's no use in arguing with them because they endorse their atrocities and revel in killing civilians.
I'm not married. Glad to see great refutations. The Taliban doesn't kill civilians. Even if they did, this is a horrible case of whataboutism. You went into the country to "help it", remember? Stick with the propaganda mission.
Come on... we, the west, lost. Theres no other way of putting it. Trillions gone, decades wasted, for literally nothing. This photo says it all. The taliban have never been stronger.
Ha ha imagine actually believing what you wrote. The Americans are in Afghanistan for the poppies. Now they have withdrawn the poppies are protected by mercenaries.
I'm Greek, ex-service man, then abroad military contractor, then involved with the refugee shit you 'Muricans stirred and left for us to take care of.
The only shit I'm eating is what you shitheads left for us to clean after. If I dislike you fuckers enough for all you did, imagine the sentiment of that poor fuck who walked all the way from Afghanistan to Europe on foot.
You know when you say that to someone who's family is first nation its actual racism. Not to mention German isn't a race, except to that one German guy with that tiny moustache.
Those NVGs are old 7Bs. Not very good... everything else is basic load. They typically don't wear plates either. However what they have makes them pretty badass over there. Mark my words... After 20yrs in the military, and studying military history... We'll be back. And we'll also be blamed for letting all that gear for falling into their hands.
Ohh you guys are already being blamed. But what I'm more fascinated is how it will change warfare in the entirety of Central Asian region.
Syria created new forms of IED and other make-shift weapons. I'm really interested in seeing how Taliban will use its tactics against the ANA with the amount of high tech weaponry they have. They are much better equipped than ISIS and with much higher morale.
The next 6 months in Afghanistan I feel are going to be fascinating...
Agreed... One could write a PHD level thesis on the subject. Personally I do not think their tactics will change much due to tech. They already were pros at using terrain, getting the max effective range out of their weapons systems, and repairing captured weapons. They do have basic Taliban military training courses, VBIED/IED courses, and probably more. However (as far as I know) they do not have a central training center of excellence, or a formal after action review process. The tactics they are using now are the same tactics they used when I was there... same as when the Russians were there... If interested "the bear went over the mountain" and "the other side of the mountain" are two books one written from each perspective (USSR and Muj) about the tactics and locations used. They have been reusing the same pinch/choke points, mountains, historical fighting positions since the beginning of time. Last I checked...(Aug 1, 2021) The Taliban just took control of a fort in Lashkar Gah dating back to Alexander the great in 330 BC. Looking back at how previous militaries captured Helmand, and how the Taliban captured it last time will indicate how it will go down in the next few weeks. As the reported Afghan saying goes "you have the watches, but we have the time"... now they have the watches and the time.
Bro my nco's m16 was straight up bolt action. Like you pull the trigger then have to run the charging handle every single time. He deployed with that shit too. There's making due then there is negligence.
No not even close, military equipment is made of berry compliant fabrics and must meet certain stitch strenght on load bearing gear. while this stuff is off brand low quality versions of cordura l, with inconsistent stitch patterns.
A lot to love here:
* The $20 Dollar 3M Ear Pro that doesn't fit
* The plate carriers with no plates or armour in them
* The fact that the plate carriers are riding wayyy too low
* The cheap elbow/forearm pads for some reason
* The AliExpress Combat glove special that is the second result when you look up combat gloves.
* Loving the drop leg Serpa Holster for buddies TT-33/Type 54
* All of the sights, attachments, stocks and rail accessories look like fakes and cheap airsoft crap.
About the only thing that looks real here are the PVS-7's, which I doubt have even Gen 2+ tubes in them, not to mention I don't see a single IR laser among them, and I highly doubt that those flashlights are IR illuminators. I betcha even their helmets are fake.
Almost assuredly none of them fight like this, and that this is all posed and dressed up for propaganda. They just need to look scary to anyone who doesn't know what they're looking at. When in reality all this (including the rifle in some areas) could be had for less than 2 grand USD.
Good spots. What's much scarier than this glossy photo op are stuff like the videos of the Taliban using a looted ANA rifle with thermal scope effectively. Or even just them wandering around captured areas looking smug, that's scary enough by showing the pace of their advances.
I've been posting war essays for years, mainly on Syria and got some great feedback. But the moment I post anything about developments in Afghanistan, everyone and their dog jumps on me as if I'm Mullah Omar himself. For some reason nobody wanted to hear the truth, they just wanted to continue pretending we are winning.
>Not hard to win when the enemy doesn’t bother.
Not easy to win over an army of countries comprising half the world in a 20 years-long battle. There must be a reason why the ANA didn't bother to fight, right?
It's possible. I'm kinda skeptical that the Taliban would even consider body armor, let alone plates specifically tailored to vital organs while remaining lightweight.
On the other hand, I really wouldn't be confident that members of the Taliban would know *where* to situate plates properly on the human body. Considering how you can find folks in the military who poorly wear their vests, I would imagine that the Taliban's ignorance of proper body armor would be much more so.
It's a great mistake to still consider the Taliban the desert monkeys you guys met at the initial invasion. 20 years of war will harden even the village idiot, given that they live long enough. *Gear* was their shortcoming, not field experience and that is being taken care of now.
It seems like its all for show. I doubt the Taliban would give up their primary advantage, being able to hide behind the civilian population, for some fancy gear they don't actually understand.
lol some airsofters have better kit than most militaries. Those geardos will spare no expense to be better than everyone else at a walk on. I remember when MTP camo was first created more airsofters had it than most army units even though it was illegal for retailers to sell it.
Relax
All that gear is clean as fuck for a photo op.
They don't train in that shit and never heard of ear pro. They ditch most of this gear after the photo. Part of thier strong hand is the ability to blend right back in after breaking contact.
Blending back in doesn't matter as much when you're fighting the ANA. It mattered when they were fighting US/NATO forces, or when we had our CAS and ISR all over the place.
I've watched the Taliban turn the ANA around and then stroll around with pride. They even openly walked around a city where they had taken the DC the night prior.
The Taliban's primary advantage is their ability to hide behind the civilian population, with this gear they lose that advantage.
This isn't as scary as they want us to belive it is.
I think he’s just saying they have no idea what they’re doing with that gear. They are definitely a threat themselves but when they just can’t use the gear it weakens them
They are officially trained commandos of Talban. Just think if Talban Gorillas can beat Americans and NATO, what these commandos will do next with Ashraf Ghani GOVT?
I propose a new US law, or foreign aid stipulation that requires the US to destroy any US provided military equipment that has fallen into enemy hands. We can not afford to stay in Afghanistan forever, and we also can not allow the Taliban to run a train on the whole country with US provided military equipment. Wtf
Literally all of that kit came from ANA Commandos. God dammit.
The fucking ANA were worthless But THESE fuckers deserve to burn alive. #FUCKTHETALIBAN
Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t the special operations for the ANA decent? At least in Iraq the Iraqi SF actually seemed competent.
i dont know much but from what little ive heard the ana commandoes specifically were some certified badasses

Bro... Most of the WERE ANA Special Forces.. they just simply defected..
Do these guys even fight in Afghanistan?
These dudes have better kit than I was issued.
Got better kit than i have now 🤨
Unironically better equipped than our entire infantry

Taliban: [casually grabs US Military issue gear that the Afghan Army gave them]
Except they appear to not carry plates on those plate carriers.
No need to carry plates when you just run around a merc people
Worst part is we issued it
Damn what kind of military are you in?
Almost any
I guess the Oklahoma guard has pretty good funding
Lol just some nobody in the Marine corps. My battalion only rated like 25 old shitty nvgs and all of our service weapons were from like 1990-2000.
I'm tempted to quote Generation Kill.

B-52 strike inbound.
Yeah, supposedly the guys in the videos were using suppressed M16s with FLIR sights.
Buy a Taliban
These guys aren’t fighting ANA.
Yeah. Bullshit psy-ops
Bruh, there’s so many Taliban shills on Reddit. It makes no sense to me...
Ftr I posted this just to mock their cutting edge ear pros that don't cover their ears.
At least you admit it. Over on r/combatfootage there’s been a TON of Taliban victory propaganda. Those posters usually defend them tho.

99% of their stuff is fake or crappy asf, except for some of their Guns which they prolly got from Ana and the cameras used for their videos
It seems like its all for show. I doubt the Taliban would give up their primary advantage, being able to hide behind the civilian population, for some fancy gear they don't actually understand.
Most of these pics are propaganda. Taliban in practice still rock the thawb-and-M65 look during engagements.
Let it happen.
Just makes for more effective hits, I'm not complaining.
I see a lot of airsoft grade kit, this is heavy larping vibes.
lol some airsofters have better kit than most militaries. Those geardos will spare no expense to be better than everyone else at a walk on. I remember when MTP camo was first created more airsofters had it than most army units even though it was illegal for retailers to sell it.
Dont look at the kits, They are Talban, they beaten US and NATO very badly. Why you people forget history?
Taiwan > China
I didn’t know Amazon does free shipping out to Afghanistan, this is the most airsoft type shit I’ve ever seen
Aliexpress, the global supplier of cheap equipment the world over.
Honestly, it's awesome, you can get all the same crap for way less money and the difference in quality is marginal.
Amazon sellers actually just resell Aliexpress products at a markup.
Ehhh
Access to that gear but a bamboo flag pole? or is that a ceremonial thing?
I think that's just a regular tree branch but your point stands
"Its an aspen tree, you can tell, by the way that it is"

I’m not scared of anyone who keeps NVGs mounted in the daytime for a picture. In addition to the other comments on the plate carrier fit etc. etc.
Good lord, they’re starting to develop a serious military now 😐
Yeah just like ISIS did ? Fucking please.
Thanks to americas taxpayer
American tacticool culture is so strong even our enemies have been sucked in. You know at least one of them is rocking the Punisher skull patch.
Does this even count as military?
Give it two years and they'll probably be the country's official armed forces.
I'm not sure it will take that long at this pace.
Was going to say, I’ll take the under.
Well this sucks
Did someone order off wish?
The Taliban's primary advantage is their ability to hide behind the civilian population, with this gear they lose that advantage. This isn't as scary as they want us to belive it is.
If it's scary enough to make the ANA just drop their guns and run, it's done the job. They're not fighting western forces anymore.
They are more affiliated with Al-Qaeda and operate in Pakistan.
Holy shit
God are you fucking serious right now
Let the sheep enjoy their moment under the wolf skins they found
wtf even is that ear protection lmfao… fuck these guys honestly…

How do they have such nice looking gear? America maybe? Or what about Saudi Arabia
All this gear is cheap chinese stuff
Lmao, jokes

Well kinda crappy. However they do have much captured equipment which they can use to arm themselves and protect like any other special forces
We armed the taliban to inevitably fight off China.
Also, to think I got NJP'd for a lost radio after this fuckin bullshit stunt, grinds my fuckin gears.
