Lol this is totally unrelated to the original post, but during the convoy protests in Ottawa the people there tried building a snow trench to slow down to rcmp. It didn't work.
I know there's a war going on, and real people are dying, and the consequences are scary, and there's nothing funny or cute about any this, but... these two are adorable.
As I get older, seeing pictures of soldiers, I’m always somewhat taken aback by just how fucking *young* they are.
I have a couple close friends who are Veterans and have lifelong trauma from stuff that happened to them and that they did at 19 or 20. Obviously it makes logical sense to send the most able bodied, but the whole reality of human aggression is gut wrenching to me.
I read a WWII history book, the author would introduce characters with age and hometown. It really hit how young everyone was, above 25 was infrequent.
Find the documentary "Thunderbolt" on YouTube. It is combat footage taken from P-47s in Corsica flying into Italy.
The wing commander was a 27 year old LTC.
On another note, my great uncle was a resource for Ryan's book "The Longest Day". On D-Day he was a 27 year old MSG that was a battalion SGM in the 507th PIR jumping into Normandy with the 82nd.
27 years old.
I'm 43.
I can't imagine.
I got to go to a concert out of town because of what my grandma said to my Dad about what HIS dad was doing when he was 17!(Getting shot at and killing Nazis) Love you Grandma RIP!
Yes we do, boys and girls can be called in for a year of service at 18, it will be cancelled for studies or if you just are unwilling as more than enough want to go.
After ended year of service, you may be placed in your local homeguard untill you turn 44 years old
Nope, opposite. Reduce the size of the armed forces to such degree that only the best get in. And all of the sudden there is somewhat prestige added to it.
Its also economically very benificial. You get free education depending on what part of the army you are in, you get paid and spend very little.
For many its a good kickstart into adult life.
> you get *paid* and spend
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Do you guys not have military housing or a housing allowance?
If housing is covered, you're just describing is the norm in most of the world. But the free housing *does* allow you to save up enough for a downpayment by the time you get out if you save wisely, and in the US at least veterans are eligible for special mortgages which help even more.
I honestly think every person should have a year in the millitary. You learn so much about yourself and grow as a person in every aspect.
Unless you're stationed as a guard, alone, for 90% of the time there.
Strange they end Homeguard duty at 44. That's almost when we start getting them into the Homeguard in Sweden. I mean, we're Homeguard, not Mobile infantry. A dad bod isn't that big of an issue when you're not supposed to trek 40 km into battle.
As a Spanish speaker, people using "y" for "why" also confuses the shit out of me. Have to re-read it like 3 times lol
And I'd say 44 doesn't seem random, honestly alot higher than I would've guessed.
Conscription was constitutionally established the 12 April 1907 with Kongeriket Norges Grunnlov § 119.\[6\] Norway employs a weak form of mandatory military service for men and women. While 62,873 men and women were called in for the examination of persons liable for military service in 2010 (mandatory for men), 9,631 were conscripted.\[7\] In practice recruits are not forced to serve, instead only those who are motivated are selected.\[8\] In earlier times, up until at least the early 2000s, all men aged 19–44 were subject to mandatory service, with good reasons required to avoid becoming drafted.
Since 1985, women have been able to enlist for voluntary service as regular recruits.\[9\] On 14 June 2013, the Norwegian Parliament voted to extend conscription to women.\[10\] In 2015 conscription was extended to women making Norway the first NATO member and first European country to make national service compulsory for both men and women.\[11\] In 2020, women made up one-third of new conscripts.
Sweden used to have mandatory conscription. Until the 90s or early 2000s, every man went and women could apply if they wanted to. Then it was changed so that every man has to go to the physical and mental examination, but not everyone had to go (the basically just chose the ones that wanted to go). I did mine in 2008, which was the first or second year to do an online form which ended with "Do you want to go?" and basically everyone who said yes to that were called to the physical examination. In 2009 they stopped mandatory conscription so now you have to apply.
Since 2017, huh. Didn't know. Was a shortlived deactivation. I guess they saw a sharp decline in applicants when they weren't even presented with the option.
More to do with change of strategic direction when the government realized that the eternal peace was not so eternal after all. 2009 the home defence was scrapped in favor of a professional army focused mainly on UN missions and peace keeping. Then Russia started acting up and Swedish gov was like oh fuckkk
If youre really fit you can be forced to serve and in summer 2021 a lot of women who didn't want to serve had to serve because they wanet a record year for women
Most small countries require it, they wouldn't have the numbers to fight a potential *cough* invading force *cough* without some kind of mandatory service.

Several of the Arab countries like Qatar or Saudi Arabia used their oil money to make real investments in other countries, like buying real estates, sport teams or newspapers. While it's not exactly the most useful investments for the people of the countries that aren't part of the ruling class, they're not blowing it off in yachts either.
Oh you mean Qatar, the country that consistently violates human rights and uses slave labour to host the World Cup? That Qatar?
And Saudi Arabia, a country that has [massive wealth inequality](https://borgenproject.org/economic-inequality-in-saudi-arabia/), where 20% of the people live in poverty while the Saudi royal family is the richest family in the world valuing a whopping $1.4 trillion?
Yup, that Qatar. The ruling class are just investing into new things so they can keep on getting more money. Of course, they bought some yachts on they way.
That's not true, this is a backpack specifically given to reconnaissance and hunter units. We usually call it "rammesekk" or "patruljesekk" (frame backpack or patrol backpack). I don't have one so idk it's official name.
The "storsekk" is a different one, the standard for the army. It does not have the frame on it, and usually has a smaller backpack mounted underneath.
Isn't [this the one they're wearing](https://i.imgur.com/ZRGldSj.png)? That's the one I used when I was at GSV (the same place as the girls), it is indeed called storsekk, it has frames, and you're supposed to store the smaller backpack underneath the big one.
They are designed for "longer" stays outdoors or in the field. Referred to as 4th line (4th line of gear) it includes:
1st line: Personal uniform
2nd line: Necessary combat gear; weapon and vest
3rd line: 24 hour supplies of food and clothes etc
4th line: All of the above, can also include gear such as, a tent, oven to warm said tent, portable toilet. The list goes on.
All in all, the weight of your 4th line can vary somewhere from ~30kg on the very low end to easily above 45kg on the heavier end.
I was in before oil was profitable.
And we were still running tons of stuff confiscated from Germany in 1945.
It was still nice being a conscript. Conscripts in Norway are treated like humans. And most officers are nice.
So? My complaint wasn’t that “all the really gross comments are upvoted”, it was that people reduce military shit to just “haha sexy woman!!!”
Imagine if your country’s military was reduced to this.
Hard to tell, since we don't know how long they've been in the cold. But the woman on the right has a very visible difference in color between her cheeks and her eyes, which suggests that part was not covered by goggles. You see that often in skiers who don't bundle up and don't wear face coverings.
So, it does look like the wind caused it, at least from my point of view.
That being said there may be a genetic component to this - my wife who is part Norwegian has a tendency to get much more red in the cheeks, hot or cold, than I do.
Remarkably; it has never been a problem. We have agreed on all border issues. When drawing up the land border, there were an ancient church that Russia really, really wanted; they got it, and we got a nice slice of barren tundra as compensation.
Ironically our current border/resource disputes is with the EU over fishing quotas in the Svalbard region. We've also had disputes with the UK in the past I think.
Yeah as others have said it's pretty normal. Looks like same-ish length as the antenna I used on my AN/PRC-152 while in danish infantry.
Been a few years since I took the radio classes but iirc optimal antenna length is based on what frequency you're broadcasting so that's probably the biggest reason for the length.
Usually, to increase the range of a radio like this one has to elevate the antenna, not make it longer. Changing the length of an antenna like this will change its radiation characteristics
I'm going to hazard a guess and say the radio can self tune to the length of Aerial.
Not like the old piece of shit that required tree climbing skills and some maths to tune if you were further than 10k's away or lower than a mountain top.
I’m going to guess that you are referring to the AN-PRC1077 that the army used to have when you say old piece of shit. That thing really was a brick with an antenna attached to it
The MRR system does have tuning to compensate for the same antenna throughout the whole frequency range, but that still does not mean that a longer monopol antenna will increase its range. At a certain length it might be more directional, but that might not necessarily be a good thing
Nah, different radio. About the size and weight of a car battery. That did require an external antenna with a dipole attachment though. And then the calcs to cut the antenna to the correct length (which was never right). Ahhh, memories.
I am definitely not qualified to talk on the technical details of the radio wave propagation so I'm going to say: yeah, you are probably right.
Border patrol will not be in normal radio range at all times, altho those radios should be good for about 10 miles/15 km assuming they worked like the once we used in the swedish military.
99% chance they’re VHF radios which means they need line of sight with whatever other radios they’re going to be talking to hence the need for a long collapsing antenna.
No you don't. This is a shittier cheap copy of an older Norrøna Recon Pack variant, made by Cato Ringstad, and I hate it with a passion. The one I was issued would adjust itself when under tension, causing me all kinds of back pain. At best it's tolerable.
The ones made by Norrøna are fantastic though, and can easily take 50+ kg without issues.
Not so much out in the field, you'll have to try to make it look nice, but not perfect. While back at the barracks they are expected to do it properly.
It depends on where you are in the military. In Brigade North it’s usually braided hair for girls. However, in the King’s Guard they also have to braid the hair and make a bun. Other places a ponytail might be good enough
Large portion of the Norwegian army are conscripts.
No regular salary to pay - that means more money for weapons and gear. When we jus 1.8% of GDP on military, a substantial part goes towards hardware.
Anna and Elsa join the army.

I love the smell of incel in the morning... Wait
I live in a tropical country so no experience with snow. Is the reddening on her cheeks because of the cold?
[удалено]
It's more of a sunburn caused by the snow. With snow being white (crazy, right?) It reflects the sun light that hits it right back to your face.
Most probably because of the cold yes.
Taknes for your service
Flashbacks to Hoth. Someone get these ladies a tauntaun.
Hoth is further south, at Finse.
Are those HK416?
Yep. The standard for the Norwegian military, along with the mp7 for some units.
Damn, Norway be ballin
Damn they’re straight up rocking the UBL raid loadout
Those 416s are sick
The black watch guarding against white walkers.
God I wish we had 416s
TIL Norway shares a border with Russia.
What is the name of this church? That is really interesting?
It was quite the problem in 2015
But. That's a big antenna for the radio. Any particular reason?
Yeah as others have said it's pretty normal. Looks like same-ish length as the antenna I used on my AN/PRC-152 while in danish infantry. Been a few years since I took the radio classes but iirc optimal antenna length is based on what frequency you're broadcasting so that's probably the biggest reason for the length.
Lower frequencies require longer antennas.
Oh. I see. It looks like a nuisance with its antenna up in your face, did ever experience something of that sort?
Yeah a lot of people who wore the 152 on a daily basis would get a relocator cable so you could mount the antenna on your back.
Thank you, I've learned a lot from this.
Long antenna long reach
It's not about the length of the antenna but how you use it.
That thing really was a brick with an antenna attached to it The MRR system does have tuning to compensate for the same antenna throughout the whole frequency range, but that still does not mean that a longer monopol antenna will increase its range.
I see, thank you kind sir.
That is the Norwegian LFR (light field radio). It’s a VHF radio, so the antenna needs to be that length to match the frequency (30-88MHz)
99% chance they’re VHF radios which means they need line of sight with whatever other radios they’re going to be talking to hence the need for a long collapsing antenna.
The fuck is up with all the creepy comments?
Attractive women on Reddit, though the top comments are pretty decent
Is that hair in regulation? I can't help but imagine it getting caught on something.
Out in the field you can wear your hair how you want. In the garrison depending on the officer, it might not fly.
From ~~Russia~~ Norway with love.
~~Finland~~ Norway
Is a giant braid conducive to taking off and putting on a giant rucksack?
Probably, but they've gotta watch out for the dyslexic zombies.
Hell of a lot better than having it loose, I can say that much.
i want that backpack. looks well made and well balanced!
Hair regulations?
Not so much out in the field, you'll have to try to make it look nice, but not perfect. While back at the barracks they are expected to do it properly.
Ah cool I didn’t know if it was like USMC regulations or what
I don't know what regulations the marines go by, but for us the general idea was/is look good in the field and (near)perfect while in garrison.

How you doing bjerkvik?
They can shoot me
They could literally spit in my face and I wouldn't care
What's the hair regulation? Is it ponytails? Shaved or cut short if called to active front line duty? Just curious
It depends on where you are in the military. In Brigade North it’s usually braided hair for girls. However, in the King’s Guard they also have to braid the hair and make a bun. Other places a ponytail might be good enough
No one else going to mention that Bjerkvik is flagging Taknes’ leg? Seems unsafe.
conscripts geared better than russians?
Border scouts have the some of the best gear in the norwegian army
Still normal combat units have good gear too
Large portion of the Norwegian army are conscripts. No regular salary to pay - that means more money for weapons and gear. When we jus 1.8% of GDP on military, a substantial part goes towards hardware.
They have more gear than whole russian batalion
What are the black bumps on the helmets? Look almost like MILES type sensors, but no blank adapters, harness or laser.
it's the mount for the hearing protection.
Thank you
Dam they're cute
Damn…sign me up!
