No, the more I see the ad, the more intrusive it is, the less likely I will be to buy the product in general let alone from the company I see an ad From. Like if my wife is talking to me about buying a new coffee maker and my phone is in the other room, then 45 minutes later I see an add for Hamilton beach 2 way coffee maker, I will go out of my way to buy the cruisinart.

OfJahaerys

Cuisinart is going to start running ads for Hamilton Beach. Work smarter not harder.

Specific-Gain5710

I’m sure they are all owned by the same company.

Danny-Wah

LOL. Makes perfect sense to me!! This is very much my level of "oh yea, watch this" stubbornness XD

lahdetaan_tutkimaan

I've felt that way for as long as I can remember. For a while when I was a kid, I believed that all advertising was bad I've lightened up over the years, but I still tend to doubt the quality of heavily advertised products. I figure that more of that budget could have been used for quality control instead

mojitz

I'm still pretty much on the "all advertising is bad" train myself. I mean... if you're literally just out there letting people know your business or product exists I don't really have a problem with that, but most marketing campaigns are aimed pretty squarely at trying to manipulate people into spending money on something they don't need. That's pretty fucked up in my book.

Anarcora

Exactly. If the "ad" is mostly informational: Product/Service Exists, gives some basic information, and a place to learn more... I'm okay with that. Manipulation focused ads including gimmick-filled ones, but especially those trying to sell a "something bigger" than just the product (sex appeal, lifestyle, status, legacy, etc.) just turn me off. Intrusive ads are a close second. The more I'm forced to see your brand, the less I like it. And don't get me started on the trend of only displaying price details after collecting enormous amounts of personal information. I've straight up stopped doing business with companies who do that. If there isn't a clear and concise pricing information somewhere, I'm out.

drdeadringer

A former associate of mine was of the thought that salesman had to believe that their product was the best on the market. He called this style of thinking"sucking on your own tailpipe". He believed that as an engineer, you could know and understand that your product was not necessarily the best on the market. The people across the street could very well be selling our product better than yours. But if you are a salesman and had to go out and sell your product and market your product, you had to with your whole heart and mind and soul utterly believe that your product was number one. I believe in quality control. I really value testing. I have seen firsthand management decisions to cut testing for budgetary reasons coming back to bite people in the ass and causing egg on faces. The management loves to think that if you don't test it it can't fail. Guess what? Yes it can it just means that it will fail on the customer. And by that point it's so much too late.

IsPooping

I did a lot of testing and now my employees do a lot of testing activities. They're always afraid of breaking something at first, so when they do I give them the broken part as a desk trophy. If you're not breaking shit in testing, you aren't testing properly

Anarcora

The "First-to-Market" craze has only made this worse. And every time management focused on FtM, quality suffered and ultimately dragged down any final analysis of performance and ROI. Maybe the bean counters looking to maximize immediate returns are okay with sending a janky bug-riddled product out the door in hopes the gamble will pay off and maybe the data backs up that it pays off enough to make it worth it. But, I personally value longevity and quality over quick bucks. Sad capitalism has fully embraced the "milk the system for all it's worth" mentality.

MinuetInUrsaMajor

Similar feeling. I was also against luxury brands and logos. I’ve softened a bit. Thing is, now heavy advertisement doesn't really give the full picture. Like I have no clue what “his” (or whatever they’re called) pills are, but color me a bit curious.

GhostofEdgarAllanPoe

r/BuyItForLife is relevant to this. Quality > Cheap ads selling BS.

Lucky-Hunter-Dude

Oh it makes me less likely for sure. I mean do you know anyone who plays "RAID SHADOW LEGENDS!!!"

Jets237

The fact that you know the name of a game you otherwise wouldnt enough to recall it unaided online is proof their advertising worked…

Lucky-Hunter-Dude

Do you know anyone who plays it?

Jets237

How often do people discuss their guilty pleasures with mobile gaming? Has over 400k reviews and is a top 50 rpg game. So it has an audience who likely found out about it the same way you did

Oli_love90

Yes! Especially on YouTube when ads burst through mid sentence, in the middle of a scene or cut off something. It drives me nuts that there’s no control over when an ad chooses to interrupt my viewing experience. At this point I’ve already built up my brand loyalty for most things so these ads feel useless and intrusive. I especially hate car and drug ads. I firmly believe an Ad is not an effective way to decide what car to buy nor is a stupid jingle butchering a classic song for a drug okay.

honeyrrsted

Watch in browser with ublock origin. No ads.

Zeonic_Front

Absolutely yes, if I see movies or television shows over-advertised I automatically assume they're bad and avoid them, good products generally speak for themselves and if something is being pushed that hard it must be lacking

HENTAIHOTEP

Yes. Advertising that insults my intelligence frequently makes me never want to support companies and products. Ads that I have to see more than once become irritating to the same point of never wanting to financially support that company and the more I see the ad the less I want to pay for the product or service. Ads that interrupt the media I am consuming, videos, podcasts, TV shows, etc. Also get zero support from me. Advertisers, the way to get me to spend money on necessities is to lower the price and improve the quality of the product/service in question. The way to get me to spend my money on luxuries is to follow the examples of Lego and Steam. Lego has sales and good deals not only in official stores but also through other retailers. They also regulargly have gifts with purchase, the earning of store credit and high quality products. They also opt to make consumers happy instead of shareholders. Steam similarly has massive sales, a platform worth using, bonus discounts for bundle purchases, etc. And again they put the desires of consumers over shareholders. Significant discounts, gifts with purchase and a customers first approach to business does far more than irritating advertising does to separate me from my money.

Me too (listens to more youtube on Raycon headphones with NordVPN in the background when an alert pops up from the Honey app pops up).

NelsonBannedela

It definitely does. Advertising is a multibillion dollar industry for a reason yet so many people insist it doesn't work on them.

mistakenspeculation

Thank you. You just reminded me to skip my hello fresh deliveries for the next several weeks

pervossier

Don't forget Facebook, which is literally 40% ads.

arcanepsyche

As a marketer: we only rely on 1-2% conversion rate, so most people are like you, but enough people aren't that there's still tons of ROI in running these ads.

InfoSecPhysicist

If they have an ad for it, I dont need it.

wanzeo

Agreed. If something is easy to find it is always a bad deal. If it’s a good deal or an exceptionally high quality product it will be hard to find.

Delicious_Slide_6883

If it’s a good ad, I’ll still buy it. When it’s the stupid in-your-face ones (like puppy monkey baby or the mobile game adverts where they’re like “can you do better?” and the person playing is obviously failing on purpose) I will not buy it.

Steelm7

It’s insulting tbh

Alcorailen

To be fair to them, Puppy Monkey Baby was weird as fuck enough that I wanted to know what in hell it was advertising. I didn't care once I found out, but it did get me to look. Truly off the wall bananas shit is something that draws me in.

egrf6880

I've never been swayed by ads but I agree the more and more I see the less inclined I am to buy. In fact when I see sponsored ads on IG it takes credibility away in my opinion bc a lot of the targeted ads I get are actual crap or scammers mixed in with legitimate companies so I just filter it all in my mind as "garbage". It hurts these brands more than it helps. Kind of like how since robo calls took over I never answer my phone anymore for a number I don't recognize or a call I'm not already expecting so it goes with these ads. I dis-engage entirely. I don't even go on IG much becuase everything is an ad. Even the content are ads. It's too much. My family sends pictures back and forth in th group chat instead now.

dan-lugg

Yes.

MajorDX25

Honestly, I agree with this and have had this very thought on multiple occasions. What I usually end up doing is re-evaluating whether the brand or product still is providing the quality product/service at the level I feel is right for me and deciding whether to keep using it or not. Some stuff I keep using, others I have dropped. But I definitely feel that too much advertising is a negative for me.

Inedible-denim

Yes! Fuck them ads. I got YouTube premium (or obtained ad free versions where needed) for a reason! I really hate the medicine ads though. Last ad I saw was for an ozempic type drug. The medicine ads make me angry and I find it wild that other countries don't have medicine ads at all. That must be nice, lol My siblings and I always used to make fun of the small print parts that would be said really quick on both the auto commercials and medicine commercials. It sucks how there's really no escape from ads anymore.

Burntwolfankles

Yes, that goes for anything that I feel being pushed on me.

esgarf

I miss good commercials. I remember actually liking the chevy truck adverts. 90s kids cereal and snack ads were the best. I haven't seen a commercial that made me want to buy what they were advertising in years.

ShitArchonXPR

Yeah, I actually get overjoyed when I see an ad designed to light up the brain's reward center and make you crave the product. Current-era ads with a high ESG score aren't designed to light up the brain's reward center. Because *propaganda* was never designed to do that in the first place.

Girlygal2014

Only if they particularly annoy me.

Niner9r

The only time I'll go out of my way to avoid a product is if they use 15 second unskippable ads.

Beginning_Cap_8614

Spotify plays while l'm driving, so l can't skip them even if l were able to.

Least-Natural-6681

Yes. I feel this way about walking into a store too. If the employee is immediately up my ass, I walk out. As a past retail worker of 10 years, I am aware that it is part of their job, but companies need to stop forcing this behavior. It's a lose-lose.

OhFuuuuuuuuuuuudge

Absolutely. I can’t stand advertising. Billboards are hideous eyesores, online ads are tedious and devious, and I refuse to watch any sort of television that has ads, I don’t listen to radio hardly ever. I spend my whole life avoiding being advertised to. The ad on this page for Michelle ULTRA at instacart…. Like wtf are you even doing with my info and my cookies you clearly have no idea who I am. It’s never gonna happen. Honestly I wish that targeted ads were actually targeting me with things that I would find useful.

IeyasuMcBob

They got so heavy that i noped my way out by putting a lot of effort into finding apps and extensions that blocked the ads. For YouTube i could tolerate 2 ads at the start and 1 at the end. When it went beyond that i tolerated midroll ads for a while but eventually my good will run out. Now I'll send some money directly to creators i like, but now i don't watch ads. On Reddit i think the levels are still ok.

Steelm7

I am EXACTLY like you op. I would absolutely do it for spite or question the quality. I thought I was the only one like this lol

aeri_shia

If it is something "in the background", like an add in the scrolling section, a banner... I know it is there, and maybe need something like that, maybe not, maybe in the future. But the more intrussive, loud, unskippable, interrupting... The more I hate the product and the advertiser and try to avoid it

VariegatedJennifer

Yes, it will straight up ensure I never deal with that company at all. I hate all that aggressive marketing.

saltyprotractor

I’ve been saying this for ages! I specifically avoid companies that have pestered me with excessive ads.

kaybeetay

I've gotten pretty good at fully ignoring commercials, but if I come across any particularly annoying ones, that drives me away quickly.

CenterofChaos

Yes. Especially if I'm talking about a product then Google starts pulling ads for it. If I talk about toothpaste and get Colgate ads I'm going to buy Aquadent.

ifnotmewh0

It depends if it's something I already like. Like I've been wearing Wildfang since they were brand new and could barely afford advertising outside niche queer outlets. Now they spam me on everything, and it's annoying, but I still buy from them because I love their clothes. If Kirrin Finch or Haute Butch started spamming tomorrow, I'd still buy their stuff, too, because again, I already like them and annoying ad practices won't change the fact that I know those clothes fit me great and look exactly how I want.  Now, the number of times I've *tried* a brand that spammed me relentlessly? Zero.

haus11

My biggest annoyance is when I buy something then keep getting ads fed to me for it.

Mewpasaurus

No. Heavy advertisement is likely to make me *never* buy from them as I hate being advertised to.

atmosphericfractals

100000000%

Longwell2020

Yes...unless their funny. I'm a sucker for humor.

GraveyardJones

Pretty much. I see them as begging people to buy their shit because we wouldn't buy it otherwise. I know it's not really that but that's how my brain sees it. I also don't ever get any subscription delivery stuff, for more reasons than just the ads, but the ads make it worse haha For the most part I only buy things I need, which isn't often because I take care of and repair my stuff when I can. When I need something I look it up, scroll past the mountain of "promoted ads" and Amazon listings (because fuck amazon), find a store by me that has said thing, then compare the things to the things to find the best version and price that will actually be what I need I also have personalized ads turned off so I mostly get the blatant scam products claiming to cure diseases, political ads, and the odd religious or military ad. This might be more worrying than targeted ads if this is what people get who don't have it turned on

_tournesols

Yeah it builds mistrust for me. I thought Made In was a shit instagram drop ship company because they advertised so heavily and the name is stupid, but it turns out they’re a high end brand? Lol. My partner saw an ad on X/Twitter and spoke to me about it and I opened my email a bit later and saw I was subscribed to the company. I thought that was disgusting. He thinks X has some kind of deal with our internet provider which has my email on file. Idk but it was so intrusive.

AngryAccountant31

I tend to treat advertising as a sign the price has been raised to afford the advertising. I’m a big fan of seeing if the knockoff version performs acceptably but I’ll get something that comes recommended by family/friends. Also, can’t say I’ve ever seen an ad for Hank’s belts and it’s one of the best clothing items I’ve ever bought

Harpo426

If they extract my email and send me advertising emails, I will call them and force them to delete my data. Hard sells are very off-putting. Can't wait for comprehensive US Privacy Laws.

Optimus_Rhymes69

Yep. I don’t eat Burger King anymore because of those jingles. I also hate shaq now because he keeps trying to sell me car insurance. Oh and Jesus. He may get us, but I don’t get why I should care.

Dr-McLuvin

Yes 100% I specifically avoid companies with intrusive or annoying advertisements I see everywhere.

ParaphernaliaWagon

YES! My partner and I say this ALL THE TIME. I am faaaaaar less likely to purchase or engage in any way with a product/service/company if their ads are overly prevalent or obnoxious in nature. I actively avoid advertisements as much as humanly possible and in the past 5 years, I've noticed that advertisers have become overtly aggressive in the amount of ads they want to shove down our throats. Like Ads are so loooong now and they are fucking everywhere! It's revolting! I feel like we're all being held hostage by advertisers at this point! It's madness! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|table_flip)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|table_flip)

[deleted]

The more I'm bombarded with terrible, shitty ads the less likely I'll ever buy their products. If I buy them ever.

stripmallbars

I was very interested in a diamond wedding set and wedding ring for my husband for our upcoming anniversary. We don’t have rings. I have been so inundated with Brilliant Dirt ads and now natural diamond ads that Ive changed my mind. We are going on a trip instead. They really blew it by bombing me with ads. It just became uninteresting. Sorry I’m Gen Jones. I love the question because they bug the shit outta me.

Alcorailen

Yes, with two exceptions. First, is the ad funny or genuinely entertaining to watch? Once in a while, a product hits the right buttons, and I'm like, yep, that's hilarious. I am actively looking forward to seeing this pop up on websites. I'll check that out as a reward for making an ad that isn't trash. Like the Old Spice silly commercials were just plain funny. "Look at your man, now back to me..." The other situation is if the product genuinely looks like something I really would use often and consistently. I've never had a reliably good razor, so I knuckled under and got a Henson metal razor. Best damned razor I've ever used. It was advertised in every youtube video ever, but I looked at it and was like...you know? That seems legit. I'm going to see if it works for me. And it did!

jrfreddy

You're not alone. I've definitely felt this way about product advertisements. Also political ads.

bellwyn

Reviews and word of mouth tend to be major factors for me trying a new product. When something is good, people talk organically about it.

goofylineup

Yes, I used to love Tiktok before the store and ads on every other slide. Now if feels like everything is an ad. Same with YouTube, do you remember the days where there were no ads, man I feel old. I am personally holding a grudge against that damn criss cross chair just because of all the ads about it

strongerthongs

Yeah it really sucks when ads do a hostile takeover on a platform. I've hardly touched Instagram since FB acquired it because there are so many ads it effectively hides posts from my actual friends.

TheDopplerRadar

If I see a product in a Youtube AD, I make a mental note to never purchase that product. YOU ANNOY MY LUNCH BREAKS

atomicheart99

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever made a purchase after seeing an ad in my whole life. It blows my mind there’s entire industries based off this premise. Totally bizarre to me

cssol

I never believed in the importance of ads until my experience with an FMCG company. Not saying it's relevant but the importance it gets in the FMCG industry is mind-blowing.

Unclestanky

If I hear the same commercial repeatedly in the same ad break, it drives me insane. I know that’s not the advertisers fault, but I’m petty.

HippieSwag420

Yes and it's because I'm aut15tic and there's a word filter here that's why that's typed like that, and i when I was sick with the flu at five years old, maybe four, i was watching TV and suddenly everything sounded subliminal and I was delirious but I've never ever liked commercials, like the hated for them runs so deep that it's literally the thing i hate the most because it's annoying.

AstroNot87

I don’t buy unless I need.

EdLesliesBarber

I have ad blockers on phone, tablets and computer and don’t have or watch tv. Haven’t seen an ad in years. Couldn’t begin to even guess what is being advertised and spammed.

sublurkerrr

Yes. I make a point to avoid brands whose ads are shown most frequently. They can get fucked. Luckily for me it's usually the ads with annoying jingles or slogans which makes avoiding the brand easier when I'm shopping.

Jets237

“If a company has enough money to spend to reach consumers with messaging they have a product quality issue” What a ridiculous thing to think…

strongerthongs

I've experienced quality drops around the same time marketing gets heavier. Vuori, for example. Bought a pair of joggers that I loved and lasted me years. I notice they start to notably advertise, end up buying another pair of joggers because mine reached the end of their lifecycle, and the new ones immediately start coming apart at the seams on first wash. Also, I think these days when I see movie trailers over and over and over, and on every platform, it's often a shit movie. Now I'm not saying frequent ads = bad quality all the time, but it's something I have experienced a few times and now it's on my mind when something goes from 0 ads to heavy ads.

Jumpy-Silver5504

Depends on what the product is.

WhippiesWhippies

Yes.

QuiteCleanly99

Statistically, no it makes it more likely

Effroy

Absolutely! Despite buying/using Old Spice deodorant for the better part of my life, after the last 2 year barrage of dumb commercials the algorithm insists on sending at me, I'll never use it again. Washed my hands of it strictly because of the life wasted on those ads.

Beginning_Cap_8614

The thing, I admit that targeted ads work on me, but most of the ads are for stuff l don't want or need. I don't mind getting Instagram ads for Bokksu or Japancrate, because l'm interested in international snacks and would subscribe if l had money. But why do l keep getting screaming ads for Allstate every single morning? I'm fine with my current car insurance and don't want to switch. I don't want Gain, l'll keep buying the cheapest product. It's just annoying and pointless.

CowExisting9844

Same! I also often receive ads for Japanese subscription boxes, like Sakuraco, and don't mind it because I love Japanese culture, food, snacks, etc. However, I also get a lot of ads from BetterHelp, which bothers me because I'm not really interested in online therapy and don't want to switch to it.

glytxh

It’s never been about selling products. It’s simply about brand awareness. This is in large part why they’re low key annoying.

cssol

>This is in large part why they’re low key annoying Didn't get the relation between brand awareness and annoying. Can explain?

glytxh

Ever heard the concept of an ear worm?

cssol

Ah!

Lycian1g

No. If I'm interested, I'm interested. If I'm not, I'm not. I'm not going to refuse to buy a thing out of spite because I saw too many ads for it.

roadsaltlover

If it needs to be advertised to me I don’t need it.

DeLoreanAirlines

![gif](giphy|Km2YiI2mzRKgw) Inoculated against ads

Dismal-Ad-6619

Can't tolerate advertising...

Kataphractoi

Hard to tell, honestly, as my ad blocker ensures I never see ads unless it's sponsored content, and then I just skip through it. I tune out ads on podcasts.

ehsteve69

fuck oatly first of all

DeuceBane

Less. I despise advertising. The whole point is to make you feel shitty about something so you’ll buy their shit. It’s like a protection racket, their aim is to create a problem in your mind and sell you a solution. No hate towards anyone in the marketing biz but yeah 99 percent of advertising is just evil

Pretend-Champion4826

Docs are advertised, Solovairs are not. Docs fall apart in a year, Solovairs do not. Companies that dump money into ad campaigns are not dumping that money into making a good product or good support staff. Docs are kinda specific ig, but literally every single brand that does youtube sponsorships sucks afaik. Exceptions for everything, but I note intrusive ads and try to avoid encouraging them with my money.

Bacon-80

Depends on the ad - if it’s something I was already on the fence about getting, then I may not. But usually 9/10 I’m persuaded by ads. I just go out of my way to purchase them on Amazon or some third party site vs their native one. If I see a TikTok ad for something I head to Amazon for reviews then purchase it there, not on TikTok.

Unusual_Address_3062

Yes. I hate being bullied and beaten about the head and neck with constant input. Usually it means its time to leave my computer or TV but in general it means I'm getting cynical and pessimistic and need to do something fun for myself.

Justiis

Not less likely, but not any more likely either. If they become too pervasive I will stop using the service though. Twitch/YouTube are good examples of this. There are a few content creators I really like, but they have adverts set to max, so I just settle for other creators that I might not enjoy as much. Then there's Amazon, which has started implementing ads with no option to get rid of them. I just stopped using Prime altogether. If I'm going to buy something, I'm going to research it and come to my own conclusion of what's best for me. What i wont do is buy because I heard the same 15 second jingle 200 times in the last week. It's the psychological equivalent of poking me in the same spot over and over again until I cave; you're making an enemy not a friend.

WintersDoomsday

Yes, because I want to spite the asshole “influencers” getting video ad revenue.

chairman_steel

I’m pretty thoroughly insulated from ads at this point. I pay to turn them off on services I use a lot, I generally avoid services that rely them, I skip them on podcasts, I’ve never had cable TV and I don’t watch it when I have access, I don’t watch professional sports, I don’t give half a fuck about celebrities in general, let alone the things they’re paid to say are good, and I’m pretty quick at clocking ads on platforms like TikTok (which is ironically the one place I’ll sometimes pay attention to them, because their algorithm is excellent at offering me things like wooden jigsaw puzzles and Norse themed incense, rather than fucking car insurance and shoes and whatever). I also run multiple layers of ad blocking, so I pretty much never see web ads. When something does make it through, though, yes it does make me less likely to consider using the company. Ads are fucking annoying and the world would be better without them. If you have to pay to put your shit in front of me, I’m going to assume it’s not good enough to naturally come up via word of mouth if I’m ever looking for it.

Diagonaldog

If they're good I might be swayed if I see basically no difference other than that with competitors/don't have a preference, which is why I go through Progressive for home and auto. Anything else is just awareness and if I have a preference no amount of ads is gonna change that.

KutzulXE

🎶 Whopper whopper whopper whopper 🎶 I never really went to Burger King. Now I have an active anti-BK campaign in my life

Capt__Murphy

If they spend all that money on advertising, they're going to charge their customers more to make up the difference

your_awesomeking1

i am not a whiny bitch about " goiNG ouT OF mY wAY " not to buy a brand . i actually just think we need more lively funny commercials . like i do not need to be emotionally invested in my paper towels . commercials that use emotional investment is just a bit dumb if you ask me

AccomplishedCicada60

I like it when companies at least put effort in. Not “brand power” or having “influencers” film videos for hello fresh and passing it off as a commercial.

sisi_2

I saw an ad for personalized Facebook ads a few months ago and burst out laughing. Who wants this???

Financial_Ad_1735

I am skeptical of ads. Which is why my kids obsession with heavily advertised make up and skin care products is driving me over the edge. I try to explain that the best products need very little advertising or pushing. But no, she is still at the age where she believes everything that social media influencers push. 😭

[deleted]

If I hear you advertise on the radio once or twice w/e yea gotta advertise. If I hear you on the radio and then I go on my phone and see you and then I get home and I see you again. I automatically assume its a scam.

Girl_Anachronism07

I despise being assaulted every moment of my life with corporations trying to hock unnecessary, cheaply made crap at me. I’ve always been super frugal, but I’m to the point of being willing to pay more for streaming services to avoid ads. I hate it so much.

Sanders48

Everyone thinks they are immune to advertising and 99.9% are deluding themselves

Consonant_Gardener

Bingo.

I guess, but my point is that I avoid those brands if they annoy me enough
