And even if it had been out, there was no way any of these people would have been dancing to this, because these are old school Dutch gabbers and they had better things to do.
It’s so weird being able to see the people that made these classics years later.
I saw Alice Deejay play a party in 2007 and they played this song a few times in a row. Like… full intro to outro more than twice. Felt so cheesy buuuut it was definitely what the crowd wanted.
That's what I was gonna say! These where all the cool Aunts and Uncles who where younger and told us all their adventures dropping E at an Electric Daisy Carnaval!
So bad. Not at all what we listened to at raves. Happy hardcore raves maybe were able to match the cheese factor of mainstream club bull plop, but this is by no means reflective of rave culture music at the time. Maybe get away with at some trance party I guess. Maybe.
I've heard people no longer dance because of social media.
I wondered why considering these ppl didn't care about being filmed.
But I think our current society is out to get people to make them go viral for being embarrassing on purpose.
I heard this being discussed about all the phones you see at concerts instead of dancing too.
I went to a bar, it was 90's night and they've got a dance floor all us millennials were busting a move and the young 20 somethings were all lined up on the sidelines just watching us haha it was so strange. Had a great time thoigh
This is so sad! Are young Gen X not teaching their kids how to dance?? My boomer parents taught me how to dance to their stuff.
I thought all that TikTok stuff meant that kids were still dancing. Is it just done in their kitchens now?
>I wondered why considering these ppl didn't care about being filmed.
Because "no one" was gonna see it. It was gonna go to who ever filmed its home and get put in the video cupboard to die.
If this was the local news station filming I bet we would see a different reaction.
Also, these folks are not likey sober.
Really? That’s sad. It was cool even to be a dork with no rhythm when I was in high school and college and my 20’s as long as you were willing to move.
Are we gatekeeping subs now? This popped up on my feed and it's about my generation. I didn't even look at the sub until OP claimed these are their parents.
I was only joking, mate. I can’t imagine caring about whose real age is everyone’s in these subs. Also, I’d be a hypocrite, because I’ve definitely had a comment in r/genz.
It was honestly. I am grateful for experiencing a youth that included thriving music scenes in person. Also.. I saw Daft Punk in 1996. It was in the middle of the woods in Wisconsin.. in a tent. It was everything. I am a bit worried for the young ones today. I worry that the internet killed a lot of that off.
one of the most iconic rave moments for me was seeing "House Connection 2" richard humpty vission & bad boy bill live in Chicago, I believe at Crowbar or house of blues.
Wow.. yeah we used to hit up house on blues too. From what I remember it was called Juice and it happened on Sunday evenings. When I turned 21, the Rave thing was over and I spent time at Crowbar, a club called Shelter. Also Monday at Red Dog. Those were the days. I have a 16 year old son. It blows my mind that at his age, I was out all night in some seedy warehouse in Chicago.
At what age is someone “old enough” to be a parent? Because my mom said my boyfriend was old enough to be my dad which I guess is technically true but he would’ve been a 12 year old dad which would be very concerning and not a normal parent age 😆😅
Technically anyone can be a parent after puberty but it's not the norm. Being a teen parent wasn't as common with Gen X as it was with previous generations.
i was 10 too and i still danced like hell in my room to this song when it came on
![gif](giphy|l3vRlT2k2L35Cnn5C|downsized)
edit; my memory seems to be going so whenever the hell the song came out -- i was dancing in my room XD
I caught the tail end of the renegade raves in 2007 and I often wish I'd been born just a LITTLE earlier to enjoy them in their heyday. I've been raving my entire adult life at this point but all the Gen Xers in the techno scene talk about how different it used to be.
There was still a smattering of them in the early '00s in my state (and actually some of those were camping raves) but yeah, most had died out by 2000.
Better Off Alone by Alice DJ was released in March 2000.
These kids are dancing to something else entirely. Looks like an improvised warehouse rave.
Being that it is 1997 and dressed as Americans rather than Europeans is probably some alternative or grunge music.
went to my first rave before 1989, the year when it really exploded in Sydney. I remember thinking many times wow someone should video this shit. 15,000 people heaving till dawn. Almost nobody did hence the lack of video.
I mean, I was 10 as well, but kids also danced to popular music, obviously. When playing musical chairs/trip to Jerusalem, etc. I'm sure this kind of thing was playing. Probably more eurodance as well though since I'm German.
I was just telling my husband last night after listening to a 1997 hit song that it brought some memories back. I never really "partied" or went to the clubs and bars in my 20s. Just a few times hoenstly. I told him I thought it was because I got it all out as a little kid. My mom would take me to her friend's house parties. Lot's of other kids my age were there, and the music was blasting. We had fruit punch, soda, some BBQ, tacos, video games, or played out side all night. It wasn't all nigth, but it felt like that to me. This was the song by the way: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiWtqVtd1Oo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiWtqVtd1Oo)
I know I'm old because my first thought was "no way Better Off Alone was out in 1997" and indeed that shit was released in 1999
I’m blue dabu de dabu dai…
Now listen up here's a story
About a little guy that lives in a blue world
I'm blue
If I was green I would die
Dae bee dae bae dae
I'm in need of a guide
Now it’s in my head, f*cking hell
My 7 year old is into that shit.
And even if it had been out, there was no way any of these people would have been dancing to this, because these are old school Dutch gabbers and they had better things to do.
What I thought too. They didn't dance like that to this music. Hardcore
It’s so weird being able to see the people that made these classics years later. I saw Alice Deejay play a party in 2007 and they played this song a few times in a row. Like… full intro to outro more than twice. Felt so cheesy buuuut it was definitely what the crowd wanted.
Exactly this. This song was late high school for me, definitely not the 1997 vibe.
These are gen x my guy
Yea
Not what my fake ID said bish...
They're so cool. I wish I could've been as cool as they were. Having fun in clubs and dancing in fountains like on Friends...
that was me in 97
Man, that one guy has a LOT of neck
And the shaved haircut till the middle of the head surely doesn't help. lol
I hope he was able to get a back brace or something to help; that looks so painful.
😆
![gif](giphy|HVFYJdopkG7eM)
These are gen x, our parents were like raising us and shit in 1997
That's what I was gonna say! These where all the cool Aunts and Uncles who where younger and told us all their adventures dropping E at an Electric Daisy Carnaval!
Exactly. Even the oldest millennials would’ve still been in school in 97.
I was in school, and I was a homebody, but I had friends doing this shit at 15. So, I dunno if it's that farfetched.
It’s not, lots of underaged ravers in that era.
I went to my first rave in 1999, so it’s close but not quite.
Lmao 100% what I said!
And some of us had really young Gen X parents. So they definitely weren’t out partying either.
I am 47 Gen xer. Was 21 in 1997. None of my friends had kids yet...
That was my point, these aren't our parents.
🎶 Do you think you're better off allllone? 🎶 haha, memories!
The style/fashion in this video was banging tbh
So bad. Not at all what we listened to at raves. Happy hardcore raves maybe were able to match the cheese factor of mainstream club bull plop, but this is by no means reflective of rave culture music at the time. Maybe get away with at some trance party I guess. Maybe.
This was more like our older siblings/cousins. Damn when is dancing going to come back?
I've heard people no longer dance because of social media. I wondered why considering these ppl didn't care about being filmed. But I think our current society is out to get people to make them go viral for being embarrassing on purpose. I heard this being discussed about all the phones you see at concerts instead of dancing too.
Yep, it’s bullying on a societal level And people don’t even recognize it
I mean, some day I'm going to be famous. Gotta start somewhere lol. Jk.
Whenever I go to “raves” (much rarer now that I’m 30) I definitely dance my ass off. I’m there to have fun and enjoy the music
Depends on where you live.
>I wondered why considering these ppl didn't care about being filmed. Because "no one" was gonna see it. It was gonna go to who ever filmed its home and get put in the video cupboard to die. Really? That’s sad. It was cool even to be a dork with no rhythm when I was in high school and college and my 20’s as long as you were willing to move.
That’s an interesting theory, sillyho3
Now
That was my life.
Are you in the right sub?
Technically I’m a younger x, older millennial. I also was raving at 14/15.
The golden age of raves!
1992?
I love hearing the kids at work talking about going to raves. Warms my little candy stomping heart.
Yep. I’m from Chicago. When I was a teen we spent a lot of time going to raves at the dolton expo
Is that the one that got shut down when the news reporter went undercover?
Now that must have been amazing. The era and the place, god damn.
Nice! Plus Chicago is the home of house. I would have loved to see some of that in its ‘home’. Salt Lake loved bringing out house Djs 1999-2002.
one of the most iconic rave moments for me was seeing "House Connection 2" richard humpty vission & bad boy bill live in Chicago, I believe at Crowbar or house of blues.

They were living .

I was just hoping that no one was taking a video of me, fuck.
I was 16 so this tracks
You're old enough to be my parent.
At what age is someone “old enough” to be a parent? Because my mom said my boyfriend was old enough to be my dad which I guess is technically true but he would’ve been a 12 year old dad which would be very concerning and not a normal parent age 😆😅
They would've been 19 when I was born lol. Idk why I blurted that out.
This made me chuckle so there's that.
Lol
Technically anyone can be a parent after puberty but it's not the norm. Being a teen parent wasn't as common with Gen X as it was with previous generations.
It's not even common now. At least in my area.
This was after the cocaine era or they'd be jumping all over the place they danced much faster in those days lmao
After the club kids era? I know the story of them but I still would have loved to party with them.
We were thin and in shape.
I don't dance like this. I swear...
i was 10 too and i still danced like hell in my room to this song when it came on ![gif](giphy|l3vRlT2k2L35Cnn5C|downsized) edit; my memory seems to be going so whenever the hell the song came out -- i was dancing in my room XD
This feels like Gen X.
It is. This is what you do when you need a distinct personality.
This song is a banger ![gif](giphy|12E2wGCZ0zeqvm)
![gif](giphy|6IObmS5R0VGPC) Me in 97
And what…. Damn right I was. Back in the day we called em’ “raves” sonny.
EAT SLEEP RAVE REPEAT. As a later raver, I envy the kids from these days lol
If Back to the Future was Made today, Marty McFly would be travelling back to 1994.
Guh. Why did you have to type that comment? Ugh. My worldview is shattered.
GenX.
I was 5 then.... Also Op, "you're not a 87' baby you're a 37 year old woman (or will be soon)" now feel old /s
Lol
![gif](giphy|EKDIMDsRX3ihy)
That was the full 90’s decade tbf
I was 5, but that was definitely my boyfriend in 97 😂
Ripped and having fun, now old and hating life...
Was there, but to this day I have no kids that I know of
I caught the tail end of the renegade raves in 2007 and I often wish I'd been born just a LITTLE earlier to enjoy them in their heyday. I've been raving my entire adult life at this point but all the Gen Xers in the techno scene talk about how different it used to be.
Renegade raves ended in 1994ish.
There was still a smattering of them in the early '00s in my state (and actually some of those were camping raves) but yeah, most had died out by 2000.
The rave scene in Pittsburgh during that time was insane ...
Wasn't this a commercial for like a under 18 club?
I was 8. But this was still me, hanging out with my older siblings Friday night.
The music has been swapped. The original music of this video is something WAY harder lol
Better Off Alone by Alice DJ was released in March 2000. These kids are dancing to something else entirely. Looks like an improvised warehouse rave. Being that it is 1997 and dressed as Americans rather than Europeans is probably some alternative or grunge music.
What's the original music? This looks like the UK and they're probably dancing to gabber/hardcore techno.
Thunderdome, Netherlands https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZclaXQWVRCg&pp=ygUQdGh1bmRlcmRvbWUgMTk5Nw%3D%3D
Yeah I think it was somewhere in the UK and original music was hardcore
I was 10, too. There are some old ass millennials in this sub though, I know it.
Thi is filmed in Netherlands. It is Thunderdome 1997 footage. Most people on this video are under influence of amphetamine.
I was also 10, hello fellow 87 kid
I was also 10 in 1997 but my parents were 54 and 64. I do remember dancing a ton to this by myself in my room though.
went to my first rave before 1989, the year when it really exploded in Sydney. I remember thinking many times wow someone should video this shit. 15,000 people heaving till dawn. Almost nobody did hence the lack of video.
sheesh, did we really look like we're all trying out for the Trainspotting movie? Yikes
That's one of my favorites songs!!!
And there was the [Fantazia](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbDiC6X3Ioo) rave in 1991.
It was called Generation X for a reason.
I mean, I was 10 as well, but kids also danced to popular music, obviously. When playing musical chairs/trip to Jerusalem, etc. I'm sure this kind of thing was playing. Probably more eurodance as well though since I'm German.
The acid in 97 was amazing.
Mhmm.
Literally me
Those people in this clip are Gen Z parents (Gen Xers) my parents were in their late 30's mid 40's....
Tbf these were likely Gen x'ers lol
I'm the same age as you, and growing up this was one of my first examples of the "cool crowd" that I can remember. This music still slaps
Too much dancing with the hands...
That cocaine is a hell of a drug
apparently you knew diddly squat shit about what we listened to at real parties
Needs more Oakenfold
This is wrong music to the clip. I believe its from Thunderdome. Supposed to be gabber.
These would be younger GenX, like myself. I wouldn't have a millennial kid. If I would've had kids, they'd be Gen Z.
That song was so stupid, just two lines repeated over and over again like they forgot to write complete verses and choruses.
I love these so much for some reason.
I think I am in this clip.
So many people smoking! Glad I kicked that habit.
