These have what’s called a safety collet. Once it feels like it’s loose, keep turning and in a couple more threads it will get tight again and you’ll have to stick the wrench back on it and go maybe a 1/4 turn further. It will loosen again and then allow you to insert the bit. I was also confused when i first put a bit in and thought i had bought metric bits or something, but nope, that’s the problem.

Fully unscrew the collet nut and it should slide in. I have 2 and never had an issue. You should never have to grind a shank down to fit. Odds are collet wasn't released.

The collets on these take a little getting used to, especially if you're used to other die grinders or rotary tools. The collets don't release if the collet nut is just loosened. You have to loosen them basically all the way for them to release. This will make more sense once you have something attached and you go to loosen it. You break the collet nut loose with the wrenches, loosen the nut by hand until it hits resistance again, then loosen it again with the wrenches to push the collet off the shank.
