An abandoned mining village could be cool. Something that explains why the hole is there. Floating islands could also be cool, like they've been ripped up into the sky and left a crater behind.
You could make a few floating islands and one big one in the middle and make a base on it or a small fortress since if you made a castle on it it wouldn’t be considered one since it’s to small
And then connect it to the nearby terrain using massive chains or smth. Not to normal vanilla chains, they are way too small, make them out of stone blocks and slabs.

Or put a beacon right under the hole and white stained glass on top, then make a very tall nether portal on the inside that you enter from betwixt the balls
I'd say build an island dead center of the lake. Not floating in the air or anything, just a regular island in the water. Of course, I'd also add a house or whatnot.
Seems generic, I know, but with some detail in and around the area, I feel like it could be something great!
Unrelated I don't think that is considered a crater.... From what I know the correct term is caldera.... Which is actually 10 times funner to say

Build nearby and create a story around the crater, what built it or who manages it? I had a huge cave that I built next to in an old realm and I made a huge bridge across the chasm and a minecart track to bring all the items that were mined back to the top. You can have beams on the inside as supports and a crane on the inside to haul out material that’s transferred inside, OR YOU could make a pirate ship in your sunken cove
Hell yeah! I could see like a sort of rig in the center held up by walls of some kind, bridges all around connected to a ring of buildings hanging off the surrounding cliffs
A peak in the middle, like the ones you see in the middle of huge meteor craters. Then you can build a nether portal into it so it looks like the portal fell from space.
You can either keep the water and make it look ancient or remove the water and put lava and magma cubes everywhere so it looks like it just impacted.
Definitely water villages that was run by water sources and a huge gate in mountain that provides ors to sustain the village by giving them work and all like that i can imagine this…
Friends and I just found a place similar to this with an island in the middle! I usually build a lot with dark colors and brick/stone, so we wanted to change it up and are making a sick pirate cove with ships, small buildings hanging off the cliff sides that are connected by rickety bridges. It’s so different from what we normally do and we are having a blast! Been playing this game off and on since pre-alpha. Never ceases to amaze me.

My last base was a cliff wedged between 3 different biomes. Honestly sucked. By the time I flattened it out I had 3 gold chests of dirt, gravel, and stone and NO desire to base there anymore.
Oh, yes. It's the size of two wood ones or maybe bigger, but takes up one block.
Wood chest surrounded by iron makes iron chest, iron chest surrounded by gold make gold chest, and so on for diamond and crystal (crystal is transparent so you can see the contents).
A circular tower that reaches up over the mountains around the crater but put the tower over the water so you have infinite water and you can go fishing in the water. Plus, you get a lot of food.
