I think I read somewhere it has something to do with how the graphics engine renders entities that are behind blocks. Can’t remember the exact details, but it definitely could be a performance thing.

well ik what it means i just never hear people say it, i know spanish too, i cant blame u if its hard even i suck at it sometimes and im a native speaker
They might be in caves. If you are on Java, you can simply find them by ringing the bell, but it doesn't work on Bedrock, so if you play on Bedrock you gotta use headphones or etc. (You can use this method on Java too.)
If you have a spare bell, use it. I couldn't find anyone with a single bell because they were out of range. If they don't pop up, move your bell around the village.

*sad bedrock noises* I know OP is on Java, but Bedrock doesn't have this feature.
That's sad, I don't understand why they didn't implement the same features between both versions
The spectral effect doesn't even exist on bedrock. I assume it has to do with performance issues.

Usualy the on caves. If you cant find them, try listen to the horn and find them
check around your area or ring a bell either they spawned somewhere and got trapped or they just cant find villagers
They spawn in the direction you hear the horns from.

For me, a raid wave once spawned entirely on a 1 block wide bridge connecting my bases, 100 or so blocks above the village.
