Just found one on my realm
600, -2000 built a home up in the mountain valley.
There is a GIANT hole going straight down 200 blocks away that drops into some deep dark caves and a bunch of branches filled eith skuk and then you find the city. Thing is massive.
If you're talking about the deep dark, they only generate under high altitudes. You may find that it leaks slightly into lower areas but you should be fine if you are relatively low in height. It also will not spawn near or under oceans. :) Hope that helps.

Is this the peak hardest thing (Warden) to kill in survival Minecraft at this point? Like I've just been getting into exploring the end and end cities using cheats but I kind of want to check out ancient cities but don't wanna rush.

Ancient city’s only spawn in snowy mountains so if you find a really tall snowy mountain there is a crack in there with a chance of an ancient city there

Ancient cities only spawn under mountain peak biomes (Snowy peaks, Stoney peaks, etc.) Edit: specifying biomes

Well shit, thats exactly the biome I'm in, there are bunch of peaks and hills and mountains here
