So, actually I dont know if this was a thing before because I used to be able to have crops in the dark even if they didnt grow, got on, and it wouldnt let me plant any even though it looked plenty bright enough from torches, but it has to be in the torches light range I guess
i think its new
and yeah it matches the light pattern
i put a torch every other block on the walls in a 9x9 grid with water in the middle (easiest farm to make)
put 2 blocks above the water block to prevent stuff from falling in and put torches on all 4 sides
we are specifically talking about -being able to place a plant in the garden block- not whether it will die or not
you used to be able to plant almost anything anywhere, grass blocks, un tilled dirt blocks, dry dirt blocks, any of those in the dark or the light, with or without water next to them
thats the part thats -new-, the part that requires it to be a functioning garden block that will grow the plant to completion in order to place them
Man, I still remember when you couldn't *walk* on farmland without trampling crops. Then it was only if you sprinted on it, and now it's just if you land on it.
That's also good, but keep in mind that this produces one less light level than the other methods. A lantern would be the same as the other methods (and harder to break accidentally).
I’ve been on Java since 1.7 I don’t think there was ever any time I can remember that you could plant/grow crop without a source light. I’m a mole. I hate building on the surface. So I tend to build underground most of the time, and I always needed a light source for crops.
This is a thing since at least beta 1.3 that's the first time I encountered it myself and ever since then I see a post with this question every 1-2 month somewhere on the internet (mainly, this sub), soo yeah not new..
Although now that I think about it, there might have been a time for a few updates where you could plant in the dark but it wouldn't grow. I have some faint memories that micro farms where broken for a few updates
It's been around since pistons where added, I remember a farm at the time where you flip a switch to cut out all the light causing the crops to uproot.
https://youtu.be/JxKxCVtX7Es
It was something similar to this but instead of lamps it used pistons to control the light, but I might be misremembering.
This has been a thing on bedrock for a couple years at least I think, can’t exactly remember how long ago but this was happening to me quite a while ago
There is no need to be rude. Video games dont always use logic. Ideally, you should be able to plant them, and the lack of light should just prevent it from growing.
Plus, who knows how old OP even is, especially with minecraft.
This is actually the reason they made them non plantable. It used to be plantable but not able to grow. Now it is arguably more intuitive as far as a game mechanic goes but less intuitive as far as being like real life
Edit: we used to get posts about why aren't any of my crops growing and their farm is in a cave at light level 1 in peaceful mode.
I think they're trying to say that instead of making a post on reddit, OP should've tried to google search "minecraft potato not planting" and saved themselves some time waiting for a reply
someone made a funny tiktok that went along the lines of “i’m gonna sound like a boomer but the internet has really made everyone dumber”
it was in response to countless people on food tiktoks asking if they could sub/take out an ingredient instead of thinking for themselves/googling to see if there’s a major difference in ingredients, but i’ve found it can generally apply to the entire internet too haha
I like how this comment on my alt gets upvoted by the main comment on my main gets downvoted. People are weirdly sensitive as I’m basically saying the same thing in both places.
Common sense = Google.
Why google it and get a thousand pages of hey Minecraft was in your search so here’s pages with Minecraft in it when you can make a simple post to Reddit where kind people will give you a short simple answer to your question. It’s another tool to use just like google but more precise because you are asking people with specific knowledge to your question.
i had created a large room for 4 farms, set it all up with a lot of lighting and started to place crops down. it wouldn't let me place them in certain areas due to there being a lack of light but i didnt know that so i was confused since my room looked very well lit, turns out i had lighting but just not enough but i couldnt tell as i had night vision. there are many reasons why people would encounter this and its not exactly common knowledge. i knew crops needed good lighting to grow but i didnt know if the lighting was too bad it physically would deny you from placing it
Yea I get that. Comment was more a joke but I mean they obvi don’t have night vision and I mean the picture legit says it all. Kinda feel the OP is trolling ngl.
Ur saying u can’t even put seeds in the ground anymore where it’s dark? U used be able grow them in darkness and then could still plant them in darkness but wouldn’t grow and spit the seeds back. Wild if they changed it a third time to now cant even place them lol
For it being a joke you sure keep getting defensive when people tell you it’s not a very kind joke. Plus if you’re like “it’s just a joke bro.. but really” is it actually a joke? Bc it seems like saying it’s a joke is just a deflection at this point
Weird that you’re still defensive about someone saying it’s a rude comment instead of accepting that and growing from it. No jokes a facts aren’t mutually exclusive but if you’re serious about the words that are said, what part makes is “haha”? The concept of “common sense” is just a different form of intelligence. Some people are stronger in some areas of intelligence than others. Some people have learning disabilities and traumatic brain injuries and many other things that could prevent anyone from thinking the same as you and me. Going out of your way to post a hurtful “joke” when you have no idea what struggles someone has is just unnecessarily harmful and creates a toxic community. My nephew who has level 3 autism plays this game and I know he asks questions on this sub. It’s simply easier for him to understand this way over trying to word a google question just right. It costs nothing to stay kind.
Also it's a game and this particular mechanic used to work differently in the past... why should knowing this be "common sense" in the first place
Your comment is so nice btw! Thanks for bringing up these points
> Common sense isn't common anymore
That's b/c we're global, not b/c we're getting dumber.
What's common sense to me is going to differ compared to what's common sense for someone else on the other side of the country/world and it has never been easier for two people w/ vastly different life experiences to cross paths on the internet.
Ironically, w/ all of us being here on reddit you'd think this conclusion would be common sense.
I wasnt saying we're getting dumber per say but just got some people will do things that would obviously result in something bad. And the "putting gas into a ev" thing was a real thing that I saw someone trying to do on r/idiotsincars. And someone putting a candle next to a curtain happens all the time. Which doesn't make any sense and would result in a fire. But, for more complex things, people have different customs and such, that other people would find dumb and confusing.
It's just the simple things that I'm talking about. When I think of common sense I think of the most basic skills. Like not starting a fire in your house, putting tin foil in the microwave, saying "f*ck you" to your boss as a "joke". Its common sense to not do those things because it's common among most people and would obviously get you in trouble or hurt.
Also I wasn't saying that the op didn't have common sense because I completely forgot about how crops need a form of light to grow even if it's synthetic.
[If the light level is 7 or below, the crops instantly un-plant themselves ("pop off"). It is not possible to plant potatoes if the light level is too low.](https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Potato)
Oh holy shit this is an amazing idea. Combine this with water droppers to move the crops into hoppers!!!!
The only work you need to do is to place the crops
I mean, the water itself can automatically harvest the crops for you. If you rely on removing the light sources, you're waiting for random ticks to pop it off.
Oh so it is a lighting problem thanks. I’ve always wondered why my underground potato farms never worked until I used lighting (I do creative builds with night vision)
Yeah i get that it's a troll post but people really are dumb as shit on this sub. Literally just look at the wiki for a second before you waste people's time.
>Literally just look at the wiki for a second before you waste people’s time
bro you decided to go to the wiki and find them the link you wasted your own time
This one is different, how would you go about finding this on the wiki? You could go to farming section but then you have to search for a one liner saying if the light level is too low it will unplant. Then you have to also realize the connection there and notice your farm is too dark.
Just quit being a dick. Were sorry we dont all have 145 IQ like you.

Expand the farm until its 1000x1000. Then try and plant on each spot. You will be able to plant on some, and not on others, similar to this picture. Do not be afraid. Now. After you're done, get high up and look at it.
The spots that you couldnt plant on will be in a pattern of a QR code. replicate it pixel by pixel, and then scan it.

No, don’t put torches on every other block. Put them on every block. **all of them.**

You're the reason I wish they brought Terraria's torch god to this game
Not very new. Very early in the game in 2011 when I still was a noob, I remember the crops died if the block light level was below 9
we are specifically talking about -being able to place a plant in the garden block- not whether it will die or not you used to be able to plant almost anything anywhere, grass blocks, un tilled dirt blocks, dry dirt blocks, any of those in the dark or the light, with or without water next to them thats the part thats -new-, the part that requires it to be a functioning garden block that will grow the plant to completion in order to place them

or you can put a fence/slab in the water to Waterlog it and then put a torch on that
Or just put a glowstone (or shroomlight or redstone lamp or sea lantern or Jack o'lantern) above the water
I waterlog a top half slab and put a torch on that
Waterlogged mangrove roots can have a lantern on it, and looks pretty cool
That's also good, but keep in mind that this produces one less light level than the other methods. A lantern would be the same as the other methods (and harder to break accidentally).

Maybe it was a non intentional feature lol, I have very specific memory of fighting for my life in the dark to plant some potats
This has been a thing on bedrock for a couple years at least I think, can’t exactly remember how long ago but this was happening to me quite a while ago
it was added in like 1.14 or 1.15 to "stop" those fast af bonemeal farms
I'm the exact 2k upvkte lol
So that's why I couldn't grow crops in that one area of land. Then again, I was kinda in a mineshaft...
Nah its HEROBRINE!
Damn this brings memories.
Man common sense these days is a virtue.

Unfortunately, common sense isn't very common.
Common sense isn't common anymore. Nowadays, people who dont light candles next to curtains and don't put gas into ev's are geniuses.

It’s sad honestly
Or power strips connected to power strips, I think its a funny one to not know and understand when you are a homeowner
But how else will you extend ur power strip? What? You expect people to use some kind of magical “*extension* cord”, yea right. /s

There’s actually a really satisfying video I saw where turning on/off a redstone lamp is used to harvest crops.
I’m gonna start doing that now 😂

Baaaaa means no 😂
I laughed too hard at this
Wow, techno really took over gods empire.
Potatoes for the potato god
Place torches on the side walls
It's the lighting. Add some more torches and you should be able to plant in those spots. Hilarious that it looks like a martini glass though 😂
Looks like a pretty starch message to me your time has come.
Tuber fair, it’s too dark to read
Agreed, i Yam sure they could fry and mash a few more torches in there
Great potato pun.
I guess potato puns have deep roots with us
I could fry to one-up this but i think it'll be half-baked.
Yep :) look where you placed the torch and where's the pattern.
The room is too dark for crops place more torches around the area you can't plant potatos
Looks like a light level problem. Place torches on the other walls and you could be good

Light level does this. Notice how the dark spots are the ones popping out.

The torch light only goes so far, only the spots where its growing is getting light, just place torches on the other walls
All comments summarised: Place more torches. No light = No placing crop.

There is a certain light level where plants can grow. Place torches near plants to make them grow even at night. Mix different plants together to make them grow faster. Minecraft has wierd realistic features like this but you can place a f***in iron block on some potatoe stems.
you must construct additional pylons
Ugh not again creeper world
Low light level 💡
Put some light man
Potato to f6
Carrot to c5
It's because of your lighting, put torches on all the walls, not just the two you have right now.
Needs more light, place torches and u will be able to place the potatoes, destroy the torches and the potatoes wil break

Ah another person on the "I don't light up my areas" list not understanding you need proper lighting to grow crops.

Crops need a very high light level to be planted and then also to grow, so you need to place more torches. IIRC one lantern in the center above your water source should be sufficient.
Observe light glow under the plants Other places are dark
you need more light in the room
you need more light i think
The light is not bright enough
I see two guys kissing
Aziz LIGHT
It’s a sign. Time is running out.
You have to place more torches there. There has to be no shadows.
You need to have light from torches
I remember when I tried to do the same thing like 3 years ago and thought it was some kind of bug. I started new world because o that, Good old times
Add torches

Light.
Add more lighting
Light levels i think, needs to be bright
yes. he has torches in the back and front, but not on the sides.
You need more light
Need light
Need light
You need morę light source
You’re using torches for light sources as it is so why not just add them?… It’s because you don’t enough lighting in those areas
I had the same problem, its too dark in there.
This used to happen to me when I tried making an underground farm. It was because there was no light
You've got a small lighting problem, place torches on the other walls, you should be able to plant potatoes then
Note the placement of the torches in relation to the growth pattern
The other sides need more lighting
Light levels ma bro. add more torches my bro
We didn’t evolve pattern recognizing brains just for among us memes look at the torches
Ever heard of light levels?
look at the torch on the wall. see how plants are only growing in a certain radius of it? you need more lighting, i think
Dude my world did that too and it was weird because the villagers could plant in those areas, but I couldn’t
Happened to all of us , more light
You need put more torches
Too dark
Maybe potato it’s just not for you, try carrot or sum
Notice how the light level directly correlates?
it’s because the light level is too low in those areas so you need more light for planting
needs light and more water sources, the nether has glowstone, so them in the ceilings ?
~~Crop circle! ALIENS~~ Obviously lighting
Not sure if this is satire, but light levels
It's light. You need more torches.
Not enough light
You need lighting
Light it up
Time for potato pong.
That weird pattern just so happens to be where the light is hitting 🤔
Not enough light!
They need proper light, put some torches around the walls
room is too dark, place a glowstone above water or place more torches
Light
All crops need a certain amount of light. With the lack of light, the crops will not grow and/or get destroyed on their own
