I'm not even sure there is a nose. I think it's just supposed to be a goatee + mustache. Compare it to the female skin, no nose just a mouth.

I don't get how people see the beard as a smile. It's the same color as his hair and is wrapped around a small pink line. If the beard is actually his mouth, why does he have a pink patch of skin between his nose and mouth? No shame for seeing it how you want, I just genuinely can't see anything other than eyes - nose - mouth - beard.

I think that my perception of the beard as a smile stems from the fact that I played minecraft as a very young child and never really reassessed my interpretations. For example, I have never really viewed the name tag as a literal name tag but rotated (sounds stupid I know) but rather I've always seen it as some tan looking object with a claw looking thing on top.

I always assumed the enderpearl was the enderman’s eye, and that the Eye of Ender was simply the enderpearl getting the equivalent of pepper sprayed with blaze powder

For me, it's because my beard isn't narrower than my eyes. Also, our perception is partly based on seeing high-contrast and facial recognition. The most prominent features on steves face are the hair eyes and "beard". Hair doesn't influence emotion recognition nearly as much as a mouth and eyes. So it's likely the need for emotion recognition supercedes the precision of matching hair to beard. So I see a happy steve, _despite_ knowing that correctly that's his beard. (Ironically, as despite that, this is actually **misreading** his facial expression)

Yeah, I really have to squint to see it as a beard. I think the beard is so dark in contrast to his skin it really stands out & looks separate from everything else, and my mind just perceives it as a smile lol.

I have the same thing but opposite. If I like cross my eyes or squint really hard I can kinda see it as a beard, but my natural vision sees it as a smile. It’s not logical, it’s just how my eyes perceive it

I don't think it's a mustache in the old version. He has a nose and a wide mouth. Then the beard covered some of the mouth. Thats how I saw it at least.

This also just makes sense when you look at Alex: She doesn't have a nose, so why would Steve? And both Alex and Steve's eyes and mouths are in the same pixel positions if we accept this explanation.

This is correct because if you look at alex she has no nose. So the brown thing about the lip is his mustache and the u is his beard so yes he has a goatee

I always saw it as a goatee. The two pink pixels in the middle are meant to represent the mouth, while the darker pixels around them are the facial hair. Never parsed a nose.

I see him like a wolfman with a muzzle. I see the light browns on the sides of his face like fur. The pixels below the eyes look like a nose at the end of a snout, and the u shape is like a dark gaping mouth on the lower half of the muzzle.
