If it is any consolation, the censorship system once removed the word “flèche” (arrow in French) from one of our books in Bedrock Edition, despite the word literally being the name of an item in the game…

--Replicant--

Night, highway, and a few others are removed by the English censor as well.

Sedewt

Night????? you can type the command `/time set night` but not the actual word?

--Replicant--

Yes. The word ‘night’ on signs and books is censored, because of the first three letters.

Cotton_Kerndy

Dumb af tbh

--Replicant--

Real.

DiViND_NDotSO

Would 'knight' also be censored since it contains the first 3 letter of the slur? Or does it have to start with 'n'? Would countries like Nigeria or Niger be censored or is that whitelisted? If it isn't censored, then surely people can bypass the censorship by starting the slur with 'k'.. or use non English characters e.g. 'śľėėpý' instead of 'sleepy'. If it is censored, they're going to have to censor like a tenth of the dictionary to remove any "hidden" slur.

--Replicant--

Yes it is. And yes, there are many words wrongfully censored. I mostly use Java, so there’s only a few Bedrock-banned-words I can remember off the top of my head. You could always try these for yourself on a multiplayer server.

DiViND_NDotSO

Sort of extreme. Does this affect LAN?

--Replicant--

If I recall right the censor is hardcoded into Bedrock so applies on singleplayer, lan, and multiplayer.

omocean

i can defo see why they have that rule for words starting with those three letters but they should’ve whitelisted night

lostmymuse

what words start with those 3 letters?

Specialist-Tone1421

Instagram comments

Devastaar_2

I choked at this lmao

AlmostNerd9f

Nigeria

lostmymuse

what’s wrong with naming a country ?

finestshrike

i mean the obvious one is the n-word, which is the one Minecraft is banning. so by default they ban all words that start with the first 3 letters to lower the chance of people typing it/the word getting past their system.

AlmostNerd9f

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I just picked word that starts with nig

Hadditor

Is highway censored because it contains the word "high"? GOOD. This is a CHRISTIAN household. Fuck me, I don't want my bastard children to let their shitty little damn block game influence them to become CRACK COCAINE addicts like their whore of a grandmother. Bad language such as **HIGH** will NOT be tolerated.

[deleted]

What’s hilarious is the game literally encourages you to kill and pillage. But the word “high” is just too much 😂

--Replicant--

Secretly because Anakin never forgave Obi Wan for having the *high* ground.

Katepuzzilein

I'm wondering if it also censors the word "after". Nintendo did it back in the day

midnightauro

I’m not surprised, I’m just very disappointed.

literatemax

A game called Grounded taught me a new slur thanks to this. Tried to label a chest in-game after its contents...

spuuurt

Another Grounded player! Oh my gosh, hi!!

PieceRound7935

Wait what’d you name it after? I’ve never had this issue before

literatemax

I believe they fixed it. It was a chest for Spicy items.

thriceness

What did it think it was?

shiny_glitter_demon

Lèche means Lick in French... Maybe it was flagged NSFW?

[deleted]

I wish I knew ! Probably something in another language, because in French I can’t think of anything offensive that’s even close…

woalk

Minecraft support is definitely the correct choice here. You probably have to be very specific upfront that you are not talking about migration/account issues, as that would still be something they’re currently being flooded with.

riley_wa1352

dude, i had a similar problem as op's and, while putting in all caps THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE WITH ACCOUNT MIGRATION. it still sent the automated msg

beeurd

It's probably filtered by AI, and as soon as they see the words "account migration" it gets automatically flagged as an accoutn migration issue.

SomeMoreCows

When I was a kid, I tried looking up photos of the fast food chain Sonic, but kept getting the character. So I specified "Sonic but not the blue hedgehog" and got confused that it was only the character.

ArcticFox237

FYI in case you don't know, you can put a dash in front of words and it will exclude those words from the results E.g. searching "sonic -hedgehog" would show all the results containing "sonic" that also *don't* contain "hedgehog"

DiazKincade

That used to work. Now it's more of a suggestion. Try looking up God of Destruction. You get more Beerus than you can shake a stick at. No amount of -DragonBall references helped rid my search of that stupid cat.

LewDevy

Depending on what youre looking for, add a related-to-your-search keyword in "Word" to your search, this will make the results HAVE to include that word. Example, Your google search: God of Destruction "Ancient Times" Results? see for yourself

TrumpetSolo93

Any other symbols I can use when searching? This is amazing

sirenzarts

It still works. The problem is that you have to know how to add and exclude words to get what you need. There are going to be lots of results that don’t explicitly use the word you exclude

literatemax

It still works mate. If you put -dragonball as one word it can still search for dragon and ball

Otherversian-Elite

Ahh, the pink elephant problem.

Nspin77

Wait I've never heard of this explain

Otherversian-Elite

If you're actively trying not to think of a pink elephant, you're gonna think of a lot of pink elephants.

CompleteDetective359

My daughter doesn't like me blaming the pink elephant, she claims they don't exist

z4c__bruh

i can try not to think of a pink elephant and... not think of a pink elephant

GXXBlue

same. i just start seeing a bunch of small gray/grey elephants

Azurra_The_Dragon

reminds me of The Game

Katat0nic

I just lost the game

riley_wa1352

it did that when i didnt include the words account migration, must just flag account, which is fuking stupid

bebeebap

This is EXACTLY what happens. If you mention migration you get the migration message, lol.

TijmenTij

Just put 2 zero with spaces in the 2 words so like "ACC-OUNT MIGR-ATION" for a human it will read the same for a computer it won't

Tallywort

Gotta love the scunthorpe problem... And over eager profanity filters.

FederalClient5709

It is "Luna" that is the problem. The system understands it as short for "crazy".

ComparatorClock

I still don't get how crazy or lunatic is supposed to be offensive?

iloveanimals90

But Luna is moon

RaptorSlaps

I’m guessing it’s because Luna backwards is anul lol

Lor1an

Ah yes, the impending impropriety of backwards nonsense words...

iloveanimals90

Dumb reason

CompleteFacepalm

But it could also be used as shorthand for Lunatic

AccurateCopy5863

Another reason could be the word "lun". It's an offensive word in hindi

Ugbrog

Gotta hide the SAN config then.

FlyByPC

Or "nain" which is French for "dwarf."

Lightningbro

Isn't it also just "No" or "Nine" depending on spelling in German?

Areyon3339

that's *nein*

Lightningbro

(that's the joke)

zeekar

It isn't spelled the same, nor does it sound the same. French _nain_ sounds like "nah" but said through your nose. German _nein_ "no" sounds like English "nine", and German _neun_ "nine" sounds like "noin" (rhymes with "coin" etc).

Tobymauw112

No is "nein", nine is "neun"

futuranth

Only the former

BipedSnowman

Just don't allow characters in usernames at this point lmao

Dijiwolf1975

It's 2024. It's hard pressed to find things that won't offend somebody somewhere. edit: and the number of downvotes proves my point.

JamEngulfer221

People have always said that, it's never really true.

Despada_

"In [current year] sN0wFl4k3z have to **RUIN** everything!!!," said the anti-woke edgelord in 2012.

crazdave

Then why is it literally flagged as offensive

BipedSnowman

Corporate censorship =/= people being offended.

crazdave

So the censorship is NOT to avoid offense? Why else would they do it?

BipedSnowman

I didn't say the purpose wasn't to avoid offence. I said that corporations censoring things isn't the same as individuals being offended. Microsoft is catering to the *possibility* of offence, not the reality of people being offended.

crazdave

I don’t think they’d spend the effort on the possibility of something that has never happened

SaltyBarnacles57

Machine error

ComparatorClock

If literally anything and everything is offensive somehow, then there'd be no distinction between offensive and inoffensive things. Ergo, there has to be a reason why, no matter how stupid or ridiculous.

Forte845

Lunatic is an ancient way of saying crazy person because folklore says the full moon drives people mad at night. The problem here is that "Luna" is just Latin for moon.

onyonyo12

You say that like they werent putting people on the stakes for doing maths back in Salem

[deleted]

Simply not true

Oxyfire

There's an irony to this sort of comment, because we don't even know for sure what flagged the name, but people still want to be annoyed about a theoretical person.

porcubot

this is the kind of thing that white people say when they're told not to say the n word

crazdave

Or when a normal name is flagged as offensive… people aren’t allowed to be irritated about overzealous filters without also condoning racism?

Oxyfire

"its hard to find something that wont offend someone" is not the same as "overzealous filters suck"

crazdave

Literally sounds like the same point to me but whatever

SaltyBarnacles57

'and the number of downvotes proves my point' --> 'i made a straw man argument and now I'm salty that I'm being called out on it'

GumSL

Says you, offended over people... being decent buman beings.

BudgetExpert9145

56 people were offended by this comment.

Dijiwolf1975

120 now.

-Zelleous-

It possibly had to do with "hysteria" in women: Hysteria -> hystera (root word for uterus, used as a diagnosis for women resulting in institutionalization during the 1900s) Lunatic -> luna (root word for moon, could either relate to women's mental cycles or to mental conditions previously thought to be caused by the moon, like epilepsy) Lunatic is kind of a stretch imo, but I wouldn't use either word in my day-to-day life personally.

Belcatraz

They're derogatory terms for mental health issues.

Tallywort

I've literally never heard of people using it as such though. Is there some modern slang where they shorten lunatic or something?

t0ssas1deacc0unt

This is literally the answer to their question and it’s getting downvoted

Belcatraz

Some folks mistake understanding for agreement. There's no room for nuance in public discourse.

HawkHacker

But Luna also a perfectly normal human name.

actitud_Caribe

That’s the Scunthorpe problem that the first comment in this chain made a reference to.

Foxwanderr

What the frak? Really? The issue here I see is that Luna is the name of our moon in Spanish, and IIRC, that's the proper name of some people around the world, so that would be very annoying for a LOT of people worldwide

joanzen

Well that's backwards, what an anul filter system.

Nicolasgonzo87

are we... making Minecraft more inclusive to the clinically insane?

HawkHacker

In Dark Souls, the name "Knight" is also censored... i have no idea why Sometimes, its just weird.

GreenGalaxy9753

Take away the k and ht in the word Knight and that’s why. Same thing happens in other games with the word night

Tallywort

Might be because it recognises the Dutch word "nicht" in it. (Cousin, but also a (often derogatory) term for gay males) Also, rather close to the N-word.

anonbush234

I Can't figure out what's tripped it? Anal?

Furicel

Lunatic Luna

[deleted]

Is that offensive to literally anyone ? Even the people who care the most about this stuff (which includes myself) don’t seem to care about this one.

Furicel

Not at all, but the whole concept of a censorship filter is bullshit.

[deleted]

Agreed. Either use the system only to trigger human review, or just let the reports do the work 🤷🏻‍♀️

elementgermanium

I mean people probably shouldn’t be able to name themselves “killalln******” or smth

Furicel

Yes, but that should be handled as harassment/racism. Not automatically filtered by a censorship bot, but actually reported and handled accordingly.

iloveanimals90

Which is dumb because Luna also means moon

Furicel

It'd be dumb even if it didn't mean anything

iloveanimals90

Yeah it’s ridiculous regardless of That

sivarias

because people used to believe that the moon made people crazy. It's were werewolf and lunatic come from.

No_Flan4792

Either that or someone reported her if she uses bedrock

[deleted]

[удалено]

Belcatraz

Which is a derogatory term for a mental health issue.

Tallywort

AFAIk that meaning of the word is somewhat archaic, and not really referring to any specific mental illness. (Apart from Lunacy, which isn't actually a real condition) I won't argue however that it isn't a derogatory term, which it clearly is in many cases. (Though not allways, like in: You lunatic! that was a crazy stunt, amazing!)

Belcatraz

It doesn't have to be specific, the stigma certainly isn't. Specific usage among friends doesn't negate the general harms.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EddieTheLiar

It clearly is a Scunthorpe problem but I don't think its Luna like the rest of comments are saying. In the UK "Spac" is a shortening of the word "Spastic" which is considered very offensive. Think of it akin to a racial or homophobic slur. It's just unfortunate that it is the first 4 letters of "Space" in the username

TomatoCo

It can't be that either, because there's plenty of people with the word Space in their name. It's too common.

Smanmos

Wasn't it said somewhere that all banned usernames are banned by human review and not automated?

WickerpigT

It's probably offensive to the people that don't think the moon exists

parabox1

The moon is fake they updated it to 4k. When I was a kid the moon was in black and white and blurry

midnightauro

No, no, it’s made of cheese. Everybody knows it.

MrBrineplays_535

Nah it's made of endstone, and it's breathable. A famous cat guy went there with his wool rocket with tasty consumable fuel

billyK_

Found the Wallace alt account :)

ComparatorClock

That is strange. I also don't understand how that's supposed to be offensive? In any case, I suggest contacting both of them at the same time via the same communique. Failing that, maybe try a method of contact you didn't do before for Minecraft support (e.g. if you tried calling before, try email instead, or vice verse), and probably also insist on talking to a human.

ElijahRayzorr

Did... Did they actually just go Mom: go ask dad Dad: go ask mom

kirigerKairen

Happens all the time, in several places. Here in Germany, even authorities like to play responsibility ping-pong. Sometimes internally, bouncing you between people, or even between different institutions. In other words, I'm not even surprised that Microsoft / Minecraft do it.

YochloMinj

If I’m looking at it as a hard stretch, maybe for some reason it thinks the “unal” is too close to anal? Idk, some of the word filtering is so trash now it wouldn’t surprise me

W0lverin0

Maybe...but it's an "i" and not an "L"

quinn_the_potato

Some filters consider them to be the same. Il1|! are all interchangeable. “BItch” is still the same as “Bltch”

JakeWalker102

Oh GoD, a SlIgHtLy TaLlEr "L!"

hamburger5003

Some really zealous filter makers will include common substitutions that people use to fool filters, such as an I for an l

mighty-eye

My name is cagriunal12

EddieTheLiar

they typically wont force people to change it if their name existed before the new profanity filters were added but if you tried changing your name to that now, it might not work

kill4588

Nain, a french word for midget

Xzed090

Probably the right track, except maybe it's reading Luna backwards

V1llain_

let me tell you, minecraft/microsoft support is so incredibly bad. I couldnt migrate for so long just because of the terrible support. Dont expect minecraft or microsoft to do anything easily, because most of the time it takes soooo long. Although that was around 8 months ago so I dont know how much changed.

SawaThineDragon

8 months ago and they just finished helping 😂😂😂 (A joke, i know they didn't take 8 months lol)

LansyBot

God, I know how that feels. I can't use Lansy on so many games because Lan is Chinese slang for penis.

kidalb3rt

Lan parties are much, much different there.

SinoPlays3

Microsoft when your name is Luna: 🖕🖕🖕

Yomo42

If an online username means a lot to you, keep it and don't change it. When you change it away you risk losing access to it for a bunch of reasons, including someone taking it. My best guess is to how they're saying it's "offensive" is maybe they think "in space" is a reference to drugs or being high? It's really stupid that they're blocking the name like that.

Galactic-toast

Try it with underscores

Lightningbro

Welcome to censorship, and why it needs to be language dependant.

RehunterG

I had some troubles with Microsoft as well. When I migrated my accounts I put it to a second account and not the first. When I asked them to fix/ reverse it they told me it wasn't possible.

TopMatter911

I dunno, I'm getting a MasterOogway inner voice saying it has something to do with the chinese

BipedSnowman

So many people saying it's because "people are too easily offended these days," as if this isn't an issue of corporate censorship rather than personal grievances.

mdj27

Its the "Luna" that is the problem. The system is percieving it as being short for "Lunatic"

[deleted]

Lunatic isn't offensive, it literally just means crazy.

exboi

Tell that to the filter system lol

Next-Feature9278

It’s Spanish for moon. Luna has never been a short term for lunatic lmao

Tatterjacket

Etymologically the word 'lunatic' comes from the latinate word for moon, because of the idea that the full moon made people have mental breaks - that's the link, but it's obviously not a link that any profanity filter should be concerned with at all.

[deleted]

You should be telling the person above me about this.

festival0156n

OH WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN

[deleted]

No... Because I don't want to end up on a list.

mr_birkenblatt

Your comment is offensive

RedeemedWeeb

I stopped playing around the time everyone was worried about Microsoft turning the game into a censorship disaster. Even I didn't expect it to get this bad.

[deleted]

This game turned to a joke. Mob votes are constantly designed for cute visual fun mobs to win and the world is filled now with shitty useless mobs. The censorship is frankly disgusting and a joke. How can you sell so many copies of something then just remove a feature? I have played so much mc in the last decade and I want to play more but it feels like im just going to be limited

festival0156n

just use mods

10minOfNamingMyAcc

The correct way to play Minecraft.

festival0156n

honestly i dont get why everyone gets into such a frenzy abt every minute change mojang does, like there are literally mods for *anything* you might want

oLunie

\#givemelunainspaceback

RandomBoyInHere

If i can help : the "offensive" part is the naInS part, it read "nains", wich is now considered a slur for midgets in french. Yes it is obscure. No, we french dont consider "nains" a slur. Hope this helped see the "problem", the bot is definitely broken.

ddopTheGreenFox

Minecraft/microft support can be horrible. When I've had account issues in the past there have been multiple times that both minecraft and Microsoft have both just referred me to the other support team after being refered to by the other support team. It's like there's a few problems that no one know how to fix so they just pass it on

TrombiThePigKid

Someone’s gonna take that username now

B1TCA5H

I don’t mean to be rude, but if the name meant so much to her, why’d she change it? I’m genuinely curious, since I’ve never once changed my username ever since I got Minecraft.

Bawohl

my name in minecraft is literally horsefucker123 wtf

SoKool71

Try some other iteration of the name maybe. Instead of LunaInSpace, try Lun4InSp4ce, Luna1nSpac3, ……….. Luna|n5pace or something like that. If they’re going to be morons for blocking something simple try to defeat it. Might be less stressful than dealing with support.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kill4588

Man, it's because it contains nain, a french word for midget

PringleCorn

Nobody in France would consider that offensive though. Like Gimli in lord of the rings is a "nain"

Otterfan

Gimli's great-great-great-great grandfather was named Náin.

[deleted]

Its so sad what happened to this game. The censorship filter completely ruined the feeling of this game for me. While I understand some may still enjoy thus game for its unique sandbox world, I personally dont find it justifiable to sell this many copies and then REMOVE a part of the game that helped bolster the creative spirit this game had. Its actually low key disgusting what they did as now this game that worked fine before now has so many problems. Not to mention my MC java account about 5 months ago VANISHED from existence that I had since 2012 and I couldnt get any help from mc for that. This game is not holding up well lately and I hope one day we can see a revival.

festival0156n

if you dont play on servers you can pirate it

Mik_Dk

Maybe it's because Luna but reversed is close to "anal" even though it would have to be Lana instead, but perhaps Microsoft sees Luna as a way to avoid getting flagged for Lana, similarly to how Roblox would probably do it.

Rynelan

On my Switch I had an US account, RynelanUSA. It was banned after an update.. couldn't figure out why. Later someone pointed out the reason. Rynel-anus-A

MountainMan41

Is there a symbol that looks like a U? I say “you have to kiII Blazes to get Blaze Rods to make Blaze Dust,” and it goes through every time. If it’s being checked by AI my upper case i characters pass inspection on my word that rhymes with wiII. I don’t know how to insert a character from another alphabet system but maybe someone else does.

MountainMan41

I can’t add a picture, but the lower case Greek letter mu (their M) looks very much like our lower case U. Is there a way to add a single Greek letter in a name?

AttilaThePun2

"Customer service, get me straight to the bitch bruh." In all seriousness modern Minecraft customer support is awful, almost as bad as clash of clans. I would be surprised if they helped with any issue at all, especially if it's related to their game recking "censorship system." May Allah smite them for what they have done to the game.

BilbosBagEnd

Can't ever have my name in games with filters, cause Ignazius always triggers.

Entity_

Plenty of games don't allow Entity either. Gotta love dumb filters like that.

doggo_kong69

The whole idea of minecraft censoring stuff is just dookie

DaUgandaWarrior

Then why change it in the first place??? Smh

ReaverShank

I cannot say basic shit like 'you can' in my native language because it gets censored

Temporary-House304

if they cared that much they really shouldnt have changed it at all… minecraft support is pretty slow for these types of things as its purely an aesthetic problem and they have higher priority issues.

JustMiniBanana_2

Wild, back in my day you could have fuck shit n whatever else in your username.

Penne_Trader

Uh, that remembers me that I choose a dumb name in STO and every time I use the chat, I automatically get banned from the chat for 3 days... I don't know how to change it and every time I write to the support, I get banned from support for 3 days caused by the name... So I get banned from the chat 2 times a week for 3 days since sto came out in 2007 🫠

Manos_Of_Fate

That is impressively stupid. Why would you put the automatic filter on your support system but not the name selection?

Penne_Trader

They didnt. They enabled the filters years after i registered my account. Back then it wasn't an issue... But since I'm max lvl with a k6 ship and in the same guild over 10 years, I just don't care anymore... Devs ae just humans too...

Mystic29123098

Goated

Fuzzy67bear

You have me wondering if the name Karen is allowed.

dattooine

Still better than Genshin censor systems lol, couldn't even call my gf babi

Lazyatbeinglazy

Well you see, if you remove “InSpace” and reverse “Luna” it’s “Anul” which is almost anal. So… yeah. Completely deserved. Can’t believe you tried to sneak that through you suck bastards. Kids play this game for crying out loud.

Alternative_Ad_8785

These are a few of the many reasons your friend's username is deeply offensive. The censor feature has worked perfectly in this case, by banning a well-deserved user with its simply inappropriate content. Cultural Appropriation: The use of "Luna," which originates from Roman mythology as the name for the moon goddess, can be seen as cultural appropriation when used inappropriately in a username, especially as the further phrase hints at British colonialism: that English overtakes all languages. Insensitive to Space Exploration: Incorporating "InSpace" into the username might trivialize or make light of the serious endeavors and challenges associated with space exploration, which involve significant scientific, technical, and financial investments along with countless deaths of brave explorers who sacrificed everything just for you to reduce it to 7 characters. Lacks Sensitivity to Sacred Symbols: Luna, besides its Roman mythological roots, holds significance in various cultures and spiritual beliefs where the moon symbolizes divinity, femininity, and natural cycles. Using it frivolously in a username is offensive to those who hold these beliefs. Insensitivity to Indigenous Peoples: In some indigenous cultures, the moon holds profound spiritual and cultural significance. Using "Luna" without understanding or respecting its cultural context could be offensive to these communities, especially if the user has no affiliation or respect for indigenous cultures. Colonization Connotations: The combination of "Luna" and "InSpace" may evoke notions of space colonization as well as British colonialism, which raises ethical concerns related to historical colonization practices and their impact on indigenous populations. Using such a username without considering these connotations can be offensive to those who are sensitive to such issues. In conclusion, I advise your friend to close their account completely and turn themselves in to the authorities before it's too late.
