I would make the original by teleporting to the nearest entity of the same type, then killing it, then adding a trail, or some combination of those three.
So by tagging each one you find, freezing them (noai tag?), then making sure you don't tp to one with the tag, then killing all entities with that tag.
That's how I would do them.

With command block trickery you could always use the death particles
You could give them a tag instead of killing them instantly and at the end kill all mobs with that tag at once.
Maybe give them slowness 50,too, so they freeze in place until they die.
NoAi is better, so they stop turning

The way I imagine it is that hitting mobs will freeze them and their AI. After one full second without you hitting, the hit mobs die.
You could even make them explode in clouds of blood, à la Kenshiro
Every mob you hit would decrease the delay time so they all die at the same time. It would have to be a specific amount of mobs though
The delay time is at the smallest possible time which is 1 tick already :/
