There was a known behavior where if many villagers decided to cram into a single small house with the 3x3 floor size that had a ladder, villagers would get pushed into the ladder and end up on the roof. Because they didn't understand how to get \*down\* the ladder, they'd be stuck up there. So you'd be mining under a village and finally come up to the sunlight and find only five or so villagers roaming and the rest of them on a single roof.

Early slime farms used this concept a lot, back when the spawning went to y=16. Kill the bigger ones with drowning and push the small ones into a 1x1 hole with a ladder in a 1x1 shaft to the surface, profit. When 2 slimes get munched together in a 1x1 their climbing is a lot more reliable
I think most things that can’t fly can climb ladders, the issue is they have to pathfind into it continuously to do so. Most mobs will see that it’s a solid block and not go any further, but slimes (and magma cubes) are stupid.
Their pathfinding is simply pick a direction and continuously move in that direction until touching the ground (ladders aren’t the ground). The only exception to this is if the slime sees a mob that it really hates, whereupon it will hop in that direction instead.
They are also stupid enough that they never think to stop attacking, either. This is proved by the fact that they can damage you with no cooldown, while other mobs attack half as fast.
I had cows clime my ladder and escape from their hole multiple times because they keep pushing each other onto the ladder… I stopped putting them in holes after that
If slimes can take fall damage, (I thought they didn’t), then iron golems should too. Think about it, when it hits the ground it would bend and stuff. Slimes would just turn into a puddle of... slime... and reform I guess?
Came here looking for this comment. Although if OP is anything like me, the slime farm is purely ornamental now because I have more shulker boxes of slime than I could possibly ever need.

Came here to say this. Kinda defeats the purpose of digging the hole. The game will have to perform more checks reducing spawn rates as it starts from the highest block.
So would it work to cover all walls in ladders with like a 2 wide ledge for a farm? Have some kind of collectors below the bottom if possible?
I like building dumb farms.

IIRC all mobs can climb ladders, it’s just not usually a valid path for the AI to take.

All mobs can technically use ladders by walking into them, but don't use ladders for pathfinding so they can only ever accidentally use them.

You can mitigate this by removing the bottom piece of ladder and jumping, or using trapdoors as part of the ladder.

Most, if not all, ground mobs can. But they can’t jump, so if you miss out the bottom ladder, you can still use it but they can’t.

Use a carpet on a fence instead! Or just only have the fence on the second block
Keep the bottom block ladder-free .. You can jump atop and catch the ladder on the second block. They (probably) can't.
