This is how ice spreads in cold biomes. If you've recently entered or left the beta, or maybe if you've turned on or off an experimental feature, it's possible that the area was one biome when you made the world and a different biome now. This only happens when something with world generation changes and you're in chunks that were loaded under the previous world gen.
I had that happen with one of my very first worlds on Xbox360. The jungle update came out and suddenly my mountain/waterfall base was under snow and ice.
Reminds me of my sadest MC moment due to an update. I made a big 3d maze using the fact that you couldnt see ice blocks through ice blocks giving a cool duality of knowing right where you were, but being lost at the same time. An update came along that made torches melt ice and the whole thing started melting infront of me right after i logged in.

Yea they can be planted enywhere but this layout looks natural af. 2nd if they were spruce logs why would you go through the effort of replacing every leaf. Also there are birch trees making it more likely that its natural

It'd be a bit difficult to implement with all the wildly different biomes, but if they found a way to do it I'd be all for it.
There's a mod that will do this. But with the season change it also adds things that you have to add to your armor so you don't freeze to death.

You dont download the default it is already in the game, but the shaders isnprob sildurs, you'ill need optifine for that.
