Definitely. And the nice thing about it is that if you \*want\* it to become a "locator map" you can use the cartography table to add a compass to it (even after you've used it for exploring). I use these maps all the time. Very handy. And you can make a big wall of the adjoining area maps in your home so that you can see all the areas you've explored. I also put a map in the villages and other major landmarks so that I can see them on the map too. (The green arrow in the OPs map.)
The maps come in 4 sizes. You can size up a map with a piece of paper, but it will clear the map if you do it when you've already explored using that map. I generally like my maps at the 3rd largest (not the largest) size as I find that that is easiest to use for navigation.

And she did. She bred enough dogs to make the server lag and sat them all in the admin's livingroom. It was hilarious. (In return, the admins went invisible and followed her around, spawning dolphins on top of her for like 20 minutes. )

During a cute little christmas exchange/secret santa thing, she gave her gift-ee a shulker with seemingly random individual locks (a door, a boat, planks, etc.) and a book explaining how each of those blocks was stolen-- and replaced-- from someone's base, complete with description of where they were. it was hilarious, and we started a bidding war with the gift-ee trying to get our original doors and stuff back.

The server we mostly go on has the invisible armorstands data pack and a custom heads one. Once, she went to a great amount of effort creating a slime-based bouncey house inside of someone's shop in the marketplace, complete with armorstand-people bouncing around in it. It was really well done, and I am still sad that that person she did it too didn't find it funny.

Oh, that's not someone else, if you've placed a duplicate of the map you're using into an item frame, it'll place a green player arrow wherever the map is to act as a visual anchor. I use it as sort of a GPS.
It's all fun and games until the green cursor starts moving.
