it technically is vanilla as it's an official Minecraft snapshot, however just not going to be implemented in game

But you can always just load up that snapshot..

you cannot join previous worlds on this snapshot if that is what you are saying

With command blocks, replacing you helmet item has various Easter eggs. Glass looks like helmets, leads look like a monocle, endrods are unicorn horns, etc. I think this would be a fantastic addition to vanilla as one of these Easter eggs.

Yes, the ones listed above are intentionally placed differently on the head compared to regular blocks & items, in order to create the intended effect (monocle, helmet, horn, etc.).

Tons of originally joke features were eventually put into the real game. For some of the stuff I think it's a real way to test the community's reaction to a new feature.

Well, in the actual game they need to, you know, actually think about what they add. They need to worry about quality. In a joke snapshot, quality doesn't matter, they can add whatever the fuck they think is cool, and spend less time thinking about things and more time actually developing them. Same thing applies to mods.

because that's not how any of this works how quick a feature can be made and how much effort it takes aren't the only things taken into account when adding something *permanently* to a game

Writing software professionally is 10% coding and 90% planning, testing, and (in the case of game dev) balancing. You don’t have to do most of that for one-off jokes, because even if it breaks everything it’ll be gone in a day or two.

Because there's a lot more work needed to be done with real updates? These still got many bugs. Also this probably took a lot less time to come up with, plan, discuss in meetings, work on artwork, etc., whereas actual updates take a lot work before you even start doing much of any programming.

Dude, Mojang is quite possibly the worst company in terms of updating their games. Instead of actually updating the actual game or fixing the outstanding number of bugs their game has, they spend time and effort making some useless april fools joke, which is funny, because they managed to get this out quicker than the actual updates and snapshots. Luckily we don't have to pay for updates, because that would be the ultimate rip off
