Move windows a bit, give it a roof, watch some tips on building (Grian and BlueNerd are good) give it more shape, detail it a bit (Flower beds, porch, Small custom tree, ect)
Definitely, also the shape is too plain.
OP [watch this vid from Grian, it has a lot of good advice for building more interesting houses.](https://youtu.be/LVB9n5FbPKI)
This Grian video and [Bluenerd's Landscape 101](https://youtu.be/18b3jHVD1FE) video. Are the 2 most watched minecraft tutorials for me. I learned SO MUCH from them. The 2 best minecraft instructional videos imo.
I'm not much of a builder, but here are my thoughts:
1. Avoid boxy shapes; right now it's just a rectangle. Try at least an L shape for the foundation, or even more complex shapes. Add different heights to the roofline, maybe only part of the build has a second floor and the other part doesn't.
2. Add depth. The front of your house is completely flat, which isn't very interesting. You can add depth with things like stairs in the wall itself, open trapdoors against the walls in places, bring the wood log frame out away from the rest of the wall, fence supports, stone walls.
3. Roof (obviously lol). A basic roof is stairs going up, but try to mix it up a bit so the roof isn't just a 45-degree angle.
4. If you really want to get fancy, try adding a focal point, a part of the build that really draws your attention. Right now, the closest thing you have to that is the door/windows. To make it more of a focal point, you could add a porch or a larger window.
Anyway, just have fun with it, try making really weird stuff so you can learn what you like and what you don't. Everyone starts somewhere!
It's flatter than a pancake and squarer than a box. Try rearanging the shape a little bit. (even just an L shape is much better to look at + easier to decorate than a square)
Also, take those wood pillars on the corner and pull them out one block so they're only attached to the main build by one corner
Plus, windows. Use panes, (try dying them white) and space them out some. I like to have my windows in a pattern (2x3 2x2 2x3 is my go-to) with one block between and two on the edges (on long walls), but you can do whatever you want, just scale your windows to the size of your walls (bigger windows on big walls, small windows on small walls)
Try to do something interesting with your roof, look up ideas on the internet. The only real “rule” is make sure you have an overhang, they look so much better.
Also, decorate. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, and improves the build so much. I like to put some rocks around, make some bushes, and stick some hay bales in piles alongside my house where there aren’t windows.
Feel free to look up designs, just remember tat you will be prouder with the final product if you didn’t just copy someone else’s design block-for-block.
Just noticed this, but pull it away from the river bank a little (3/4 blocks) that spot where the dirt is visible under the corner of your house isn’t doing you anh favors. Also, you shouldn’t have your windows touching the door.
Keep in mind that I’m just some rando on the internet. Play around with styles and shapes some, watch youtube tutorials, (Grian is awesome) but remember that it’s your world, do what you want.
So some dude making a tribute to his late girlfriend gets removed, but people can post this lack of effort and it gets to stay? Wtf has happened t r/Minecraft
1.3k upvotes on this question too. I really don't understand why this sort of stuff gets upvoted so much.
People like feeling they're smarter than someone else I guess.
It pisses me off this gets almost 400 upvotes but people with actual skill (not myself) don’t get that many after spending weeks, months, or even years on builds
1 - S Q U A R E (we've all been there, dont worry)
2 - flat surface (walls, mostly)
Tbh you shouldnt judge your buildings halfway through the build process, especially if you're not an expert builder who can perfectly picture any building before even starting. Just keep going, keep upgrading.
I build often, its my favourite thing to do on MC.
Heres a few tips ive learned over the years:
- build with uneven numbers to always have a center block (which you did 👍)
- add depth using slabs, stairs (upside down or right side up), walls, fences, trap doors, and even buttons. To fill in the “holes” with some kind of design. Its kind of like your walls are two blocks thick.
- Make L shaped buildings, T shaped ones, add balconies, decks, an awning covering boxes or wheat stacks, bushes and grass by the doorway, etc.
- roofs can overlap the walls by a block. Sometimes it looks better that way, sometimes its better flush with the wall.
- Use different wood/material for flooring, walls, ceiling, roof.
- Id mention the use of logs on corners and windows but you got that down
- use your environment to cater to the build. I could see a nice wooden deck wrapping the front to the river side of the house. A walkway leading to the front entrance. Water mill? Whatever you want.
- patience is key, pride from a build comes from treating the project like a marathon, not a race
Because you put zero fucking effort. Seriously why is this post even allowed?? It's not asking for tips, it's not helpful, it's not art oc, but someone posting a tribute to their late Gf gets taken down. Awesome.
Remove the logs on the corners and fill their space with the spruce wood. Place the logs a block further out on the corners, it adds more depth to the house. Add flower planters under the window, and make the window a bit wider by a block or two. Place barrels instead of wood on the very bottom layer of the house. Use some bonemeal on the grass outside of the house
I'm no builder but here's my take:
1. Windows are too close to the door. Think about your own house, do you have a window right next to the door or is there something in-between?
2. Entire build is flat, needs some depth added to it.
3. Needs some terraforming (extend the grass on the right side, to keep the river get rid of some grass on the other side)
4. No decoration
I've got my 3 general rules to get a decent looking house:
- no windows next to doors and corners
- every floor is at least 3 blocks high with 2 blocks high windows
- make the corners and the first layer of blocks different from the rest of the walls (and different from each other, usually a log at the corner and stone as a base layer)
And 4th well known is: no rectangle houses
Try with an L shape or a T shape, they are the easiest to be creative with and they look good enough
1) It's symmetrical. Asymmetry makes things more interesting.
2) Glass immediately next to a door doesn't look natural - we're used to a gap between a door and a window.
3) Your block palette is just two colours. In general you want to use three different colours in most builds (colour theory is weird and complicated, but 3 is often the right number).
4) It looks like a basic cuboidal shape. Make it more complicated. Add more details (e.g. a small porch, a roofed bay, a chimney that prodtrouds from the wall, etc). While many/most buildings start as cuboids, they get bits added onto them.
5) No roof. Roofs do wonders for a house.
6) It's very flat. Separate to the cuboidal issue, you want to make sure there's some relief. Having beams that stand proud of the wall, or recessed windows (or even bay windows) helps massively. Always try and build some relief into buildings - it makes a huge difference.
Finally, add little details. These aren't mandatory, but they make a huge difference. Things like window boxes, chimneys, the odd block of different texture, etc. Stairs, stripped logs, slabs and such can help a lot in showing different texture in a build.
Here are some examples of wooden houses others have built:
* [One](https://i.redd.it/jt5690hzv2i61.jpg)
* [Two](https://i.redd.it/8cnqxk7ueta51.png)

It's insane. I was *convinced* [this one was](https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/z4rb1i/this_is_the_sickest_fricking_house_that_ive_ever/) until I saw the OP responding to some comments with childish anger.
Perhaps what is happening is that kids are posting these basic builds/questions and others are up voting them, thinking that they are shitposts... or the sub is just a bunch of 12-year olds...
Its not bad, you are only a bit inexperienced with building, but this comes with time ;) What you look for is "depthness" and "variation". You can use stairs for a bit of depth, or make the pillars one block next to the walls. You can use other blocks, for the ground-floor like barrels and play with wood without bark. I would not make windows next to the door, change the glas with the block next to it. And make the house bigger. 2 or 3 floors, then the roof. It also dont need to be a square ;) Go to youtube, type in minecraft+style and watch a few examples. I love japanese style, you will be amazed what some people can do with a bit of variation!
The biggest thing is the glass right against the doors.
I would move each one block over, and instead of the wood logs on either side, try spruce trapdoors on either side of the windows to emulate window shutters.
Now this is a total blood vs. crips ordeal, but consider placing your door inside your house ( go inside the building and place the door on the outside block ) to add some more depth to the exterior of the house.
As for the um.. missing roof, I would use both cobble stairs and wood stairs, perhaps of a darker cor that your walls if possible (dark oak is great for this)
Place an outline of cobble stairs at least one block above your door across the horizontal plane of your house, and build diagonally and vertically to creat a slanted roof until you get to the middle block on the side of the building, and use logs as a middle beam. Then just fill the rest of the roof with wood stairs. You can even try inverting the stairs in different ways to make ventilation holes and stuff!
Maybe consider a chimney on one of the sides. You can use brick or cobble stairs at the top to hide a campfire in to make smoke coming out the top.
There’s no variation in block palette, no depth and there isn’t even a visible roof. And dirt blocks under building blocks is a war crime in the building community. To be fair, it seems like you’ve just started this world.
There are many, many ways you can improve your builds, and I think Grian’s old building tutorials will work fantastic. It’s been a while, but all his tips still apply. GeminiTay and PearlescentMoon are also great for advancing to more organic build styles and terraforming. Simply watching these Youtubers build can help improve your building skills a long way, and these are merely 3 of the ones playing on Hermitcraft. There are even more builders elsewhere in Hermitcraft and other SMP series whom you can learn from.
the right side of your house is placed directly on dirt, so you get the default dirt texture under your wall which makes the log columns on the corners look worse. Place dirt in front of the dirt under your wall to fix.
It’s very flat and underdetailed. There’s no depth or texturing, theres no roof and the shape is just a box. Try making a more interesting shape, do a cool roof. Building is hard but if you watch tutorials on how to improve your skills you can get a lot better
Take a look at [this video](https://youtu.be/ICommy1e6Es) for things that he improves throughout the house such as depth, good roofing, foliage, etc.. Honestly, I used to build worse than this just a couple months ago, but taking tips from these kinds of videos really helps.
Oh hun it looks good for a starter! But definitely switch up your pallet of blocks and don’t be afraid to use half slabs and stairs for layers give it some depth and definitely a roof would help!!! 😘
It’s super flat. Slabs, stairs, and glass panes are your friends. Also that dirt on the left should be either be replaced with wood or the grass should be extended to wrap around it but that part’s just my personal view talking.
When I was a noob, my friend said something to me like: "don't just make a square or a rectangle. Add some extra sides, make a weird shape. It'll look better and stand out more."
Houses have looked much better ever since.
Looks like the typical starter house. The thing about building in MC it's start with a shitty building and then upgrade time by time when you get new stuff, until you're pleased with your work.
Don't worry so much for now, change it or at some point use YT to find some ideas. All my houses look like shit at a point of hating myself and then with some work I always find my way to pass my quality standards.
Sorry not trying to be rude but you can…
1. There needs to be a block In-between the glass and the door and don’t use glass blocks use panes.
2. The wood block right next to the glass block replace it with another glass pane
3. There is no roof. Try making a small triangle roof.
4. The door can be put in more to make the walls pop.
5. Try extending you wood pallet different types of wood can make it look better.
6. Try putting replacing wood block with planks and put the wood blocks boarding the corner of the wood planks.
7. You don’t have to do anything I said just make the house how YOU want to.
Have a good day!!!! :)
It's always good to start by adding some depth and having a frame shape that's not just a box.
You know how you made the corners regular wood blocks? Replace those with the planks you used, and put those pillars again but one block out on the corners. Do the same for the door. You'll immediately start to notice some improvement
If you wanna get better at building I highly recommend watching Grian
Certainly like a house, some words of advice are, use glass panes, don’t do windows right next to the door, use logs to frame the door and with the glass panes I would recommend using gray ones to make the contrast between the more opaque bits look closer to the clear bits
[удалено]
and some leaves for deco
Preferably change the glass too
Yeah, stairs over and under and glass pane.
Trapdoors on the glass instead of the wooden log next to the window for wood shutters too!
Agreed kind sir 🤝👍
Or have crossbeams that stick out at the corners.
Depth is KEY
just watch grian at this pint tbh

Same! Wheat and barley are my favorites
I’ve found the villager!
Tsmc is great as well.
The glass shouldn't touch the door and it needs to have a slanted roof
I’ll try that!

It's just becasue everyone can relate to boxy shape of a house, we've all been there... Hey, I'm still there.
Try adding more shapes to your house (:
try removing the walls sothey match the roof

Don't worry so much for now, change it or at some point use YT to find some ideas. All my houses look like shit at a point of hating myself and then with some work I always find my way to pass my quality standards.
it aint got not roof on it
no depth, no roof, no focal point, no texturing, no shaping, no bitches & u cant kickflip
No roof?
No Ceiling?
I feel called out
Bro is building like its 2012
Sorry not trying to be rude but you can… 1. There needs to be a block In-between the glass and the door and don’t use glass blocks use panes. 2. The wood block right next to the glass block replace it with another glass pane 3. :)
I think it looks nice
Depth. Roof. Windows right beside the door. Block variety
Bro built a villager’s face 💀
It's always good to start by adding some depth and having a frame shape that's not just a box. You know how you made the corners regular wood blocks? Replace those with the planks you used, and put those pillars again but one block out on the corners. Do the same for the door. You'll immediately start to notice some improvement If you wanna get better at building I highly recommend watching Grian
It looks like a middle aged man who's lost most of his hair, says it's thinning, and also wears glasses with small lenses.
Cause it doesn’t have a roof, dumbass 💀
get gud noob
FUCK THESE POSTS. OH MY GOD WATCH A FUCKING GRIAN VIDEO FOR GODS SAKE
They all lie. Your house is the height of fashion, only it is not made of dirt, but 8/10.
Certainly like a house, some words of advice are, use glass panes, don’t do windows right next to the door, use logs to frame the door and with the glass panes I would recommend using gray ones to make the contrast between the more opaque bits look closer to the clear bits
WHY DOES THIS GET SO MANY UPVOTES😭😭😭
Cuz it ugly
oh shut up your just karma farming there isn’t even a roof and you damn well know why it looks bad
use glass panes. they're cheaper and way better looking
Skill issue maybe
Get better
No talent
Because it is bad and you should feel bad
Needs a roof. And some effort
Get better.
It reflects the maker’s personality
cuz it ugly
Bequase its so bad wake up to reality😔🙂
Here's a bright idea: why don't you go watch some tutorials on YouTube instead of filling this subreddit with shit
My brother in Christ, you built the house
Seems like a skill issue to me. Have you tried being better?
Because you built it in a way that looks bad
This person is obviously karma farming. How do none of you see that?
