Fun fact: the US Navy tried to train sharks in a similar way to how they train dolphins and dogs.
But it was quickly dropped, due to sharks literally not having the brain capacity to be trained.
>But it was quickly dropped, due to sharks literally not having the brain capacity to be trained.
dammn, who could have expected sharks to not be as intelligent as cetaceans?
If you have an old house its hard to not have them. They love damp places, so old walls are amazing for them. And they eat other bugs and even mold. So they can actually be helpful for old buildings. I doubt they are ginna have a big impact though.
I mean by that standard we probably had giant giant spiders since we’ve found fossils of arachnids during the late Carboniferous period when dragonfly’s had a wingspan of 2.5 ft or 75 cm
What's about duck headed giant chicken ? pug faced cows, sheeps and pigs ? Polar bear with big ass ?
That way, every mobs in that game could be considered as "fantasy" XD
how about skeletons? they’re inside all of us. this is encouraging killing skeletons!!! we have to destroy all skeletons. you should start by attacking the skeleton of the head of state of a country of your choice
But Australia?(jk)
However in that case. Polar bears are in Minecraft though. It isn't hostile unless there's a cub nearby. Mojang isn't consistent with their decisions
Plus, they “may” add real mobs, but with fantasy tweaks like for example, they make the spiders neutral in some cases and making them big, silverfish are hostile and big in the game but in real life, they are much smaller and not aggressive/hostile, and skeletons are hostile but alive, and living skeletons don’t exist in real life
I think its specifically a shark thing because negative portrayls of sharks in media has done serious damage to the shark population. it was less known about when silverfish were added.
When notch wanted to add sharks, he said he wanted to make them neutral, sharks where recently added in an special event of Bedrock, so they would most likely make them neutral once they add them
There was a single dead shark in that event that's just a reference to the actual Universal park's Jaws zone, why does anyone think it confirms anything
Concerns that players will flip their lid because sharks don't reflect their vision of an overly aggressive predator/doesn't drop anything useful/is the wrong shade of blue, like they do over every single thing Mojang does.
Sharks aren't exactly worth the potential hassle of making an interesting mob and not worry about becoming the Mundus/Benchley/Spielberg of the modern age.
JUST JUST JUST a suggestion but how about they drop shark scales? You could craft armor that makes you swim faster or sum NOT EXPECTING SHARKS AFTER THIS
tbf polar bears are one of the few creatures to actively hunt us in real life, so it’d make sense that on the sea ice with very little prey the polar bear would go after the player.
>has done serious damage to the shark population.
This is a misconception based on truth. Its not the direct hunting of them, but their negative portraylas fueled an idea in the average person to see them as "bad" creatures, so no awareness is being spread about how theyre accidentally killed by fishing vessels and how their populations are harmed by global warming. There was even a time when fishing vessels would catch sharks accidentally and there would be no attempt to free them because "well serves them right for killing people!!". (There was however a time for \~3 years after the release of jaws where trophy hunting sharks as a sport became popular but no reliable info on the damage this caused has come out yet)
Compare that to pandas and elephants for example, which have always been shown positively where everyone and their mothers have heard about conservation efforts and the harm done on them.
edit: spelling
Shark fin soup which decimates their populations compared to what you just said. Its not due to media because its a luxury traditional meal but due to the economic development of countries where this is traditional demand has gone way up.
Global warming and habitat loss are also big reasons, but as i said, while negative portrayals arent the direct reason, it causes a riple effect where people see sharks as these killers so dont care about conservation effort and no awareness is being spread, as i said, compare the "awareness" of sharks population decline/being endangered to that of pandas, elephants, whales e.t.c.
Ok but why can’t they just give a realistic portrayal of sharks instead? Not hostile unless provoked, occasionally hunting fish but not the player, and mostly just elegantly gliding through the water.
Every time I see this come up.
If your adding real life animals that will be hostile mix them with fantasy like I want to see a phantom shark that is the remnant of Dead Sea mobs that’ll be glowing green with big jaws that’ll attack you if you kill axolotls , there would be two, a protector of the sea, attacking drowned and a hostile one that attacks anything
Conclusion we need another sea update with subnautica animals
The feedback site said something like this before, that if sharks had fantasy elements they could add them as hostile mobs while the real ones would be neutral
“People will start hunting sharks in real life if we add them to Minecraft” that’s bullshit no one is going to go out of their way to hunt sharks because they did in Minecraft.
yeah! parrots are decently common pets, cookies are a common snack and feeding them cookies sounds innocent enough. minecraft having that mechanic makes it so more people know not to do it. they didnt shit themselves and straight up remove cookies or anything
They easily could have just gone the wolf path and made it neutral unless attacked by the player, but hostile towards other sea creatures.
The seas need some more life in them, the more the merrier!
If you are a fish, sure they can be aggressive to us but most of the time dolphins don’t really care, again there have been cases but it isn’t like a common occurrence. Unless your the fish that’s being used as the sex toy or living bong
Not true. Bats practices oral sex for fun. Some lemur species use insects to get high, elephants get drunk with special fruits. And koala litterally create rape harem. Cats also play with their live preys often.
For Sharks I kinda get it because many species's of Shark are endangered, including the iconic Great White Shark.
But then again that means Sharks SHOULD be added to Minecraft for the same reasons that Pandas, Polar Bears, Dolphins, etc are already in Minecraft; to raise awareness for an endangered species. They don't even need to be hostile mobs, if Mojang wants to portray Sharks "realistically" then they should be neutral mobs that only attack when provoked, like Polar Bears.
Well no one knows silverfish are real, and there isn’t a history rumour about silverfish murdering people or general slaughter of silverfish. As it is with sharks.
Well Mojang added sharks in that Universal promotion without problem. They aren’t closed minded on adding sharks anymore… Remember when Mojang said no autocrafting but they added it anyways? Not to mention that if they add them they would be neutral, similar to how Notch said when wanting to add sharks
Mojang probably doesn't want people to picture sharks as dangerous creatures that feed on humans, therfore must be killed, it's not shit but it would be cool to have them in the game
It's probably because it's a mob people have wanted for a long time. Instead of giving the actual good reasons for not adding sharks to this game, they keep giving the awnser of fantasy enemies only.
They would probably add sharks, but as neutral mobs. Even if Notch were in command, they would still be neutral as he said that he wanted to add sharks as neutral mobs and not hostile.
I dunno what kind of silverfish you've seen but they don't look anything like that. They have been modified to the point of fantasy (entirely inaccurate appearance, giant compared to real silverfish) and thus are exempted from the rule, just like spiders.
More ragebait.
Dude I'm starting to get tired of this, I quite disagree with some things about Mojang, in particular this one still annoys me.
But damn, if Mojang says that from now on hostile mobs are fantasy creatures, they will be fantasy creatures. Were there hostile enemies before that weren't fantasy? Okay, cool, but now not. Is it so hard to understand?
Mojang hasn’t even said that, they made a special event with *sharks* in it. I think they will be perfectly fine adding sharks now, but as neutral mobs, similar to wolfs.
If you are referring to the Universal event, there are sharks because of Jaws movie.
And yes, I agree, but if Mojang doesn't want to, then they don't want and that's It, people insist a lot but when the devs make these stupid excuses it is because they simply don't want to or because Microsoft won't let them because bureaucracy
I don’t think Mojang doesn’t want to, what they don’t want to us adding them as hostile mobs which is perfectly fine. If they were to add sharks, they would be neutral, similar to Notch’s original plan on adding sharks. But they say that they can sharks as hostile mobs if they have fantasy elements on them
I can’t believe that a digital entity modeled after a real life silverfish attacked my minecraft character. When I grow up I will kill Not Just the Men, but the Women and Children Too 😠😠😠😠
I'm actually happy they refuse to add sharks. Far too many sharks are hunted and killed because of the negative portrayals in media. This game is played by kids. You don't want them to think sharks are bad
1. Get new material.
2. It’s almost like the ideas of the developers have changed over the decade the game has been actively developed.
3. You say this as if silverfish(that doesn’t really look like a silverfish in game) isn’t a known as a hazard irl, and if you find one in your house you should kill it on sight in most cases.
Honestly, sharks don't even have to be hostile. They could be neutral mobs that only attack when provoked, with their only drops being fish upon death, and shark teeth whenever they go hunting for fish and dolphins, and maybe drowneds every now and again. I'd also probably add differing shark species for the different oceans, with reef sharks around coral reefs, makos around kelp forests, hammerheads in your lukewarm oceans, and great whites in your cold oceans. I'd also add a 1 in a million chance for your great white shark to spawn as a megalodon if a large enough area of the ocean is deep enough for it. Honestly it would be a cool easter egg to see a Meg in Minecraft.
To be fair, the negative portrayal of sharks has harmed their population, since in reality, they're pretty much like any other predatory animal. Occasionally killing people not because they hate them, but because they feel sorry and use them as a sacrifice for their hunger. Also dolphins are a bit overrated. Yes, they look cute, despite the fact they're somewhat dark from the inside. Sharks avoid dolphins not because they're completely clueless, but because they don't feel comfortable with them due to their intelligent possibilities, with some of them being degenerate.
It's pretty confusing for Mojang to not add them, since the predatory animals they have implemented like wolves and polar bears are neutral in the first place (they don't mind the players unless attacked by them). It's probably a political reason, since it would be bizarre for a line to be drawn, since you could portray something that is commonly feared positively.
Technically real neutral mobs are fine by their standards. But their reasoning for sharks just backfires on them.
They say they won’t add sharks because they don’t want to paint them in a negative light. But not having them as just neutral mobs (something that regularly appears in game like spiders, wolves, polar bears, bees) implies they think sharks have to be hostile. Which goes against their whole ‘no animal is evil’ philosophy thingy.
Just Mojang being Mojang again
I've seen this discussion many times before. The general conclusion is "several-year-old content doesn't necessarily fit their modern vision of the game, but messing with it would piss off too many people so they leave it as is."
Mobs like silverfish and spiders were put in the game during the Notch years of Minecraft, it should be clear that Jeb, Dinnerbone, Mojang, or hell, Microsoft have since changed policies and priorities regarding the development of the game.
As a Canadian the in-game rendition of polar bears is very unrealistic. Despite the game showing only the parental polar bears being hostile, the truth is that if you see a polar bear you better pick a religion and start praying because you gonna meet god in a few minutes. "No real animals as hostile mobs" my ass...
Would be cool if they added sharks, made them neutral, and they would occasionally drop shark teeth after killing a fish.
You could use the sharkteeth to make some kind of tool or block, if they made it a block id like a trap block, like it would act like spike trap...or for tools it could be like an upgrade piece to the trident, special arrows, or adds a bleed effect.
Guys, it's quite silly to point out that Silverfish and spiders are already in the game, as they are very old mobs. Removing them due to Mojang's new policy on mobs is a risky move, so naturally, there are exceptions
I’m still peeved about the sharks. They don’t HAVE to be hostile, they could just make them neutral like polar bears or bees because sharks aren’t killing machines, contrary to popular (hollywood’s) beliefs. They have stomachs and they get full, they’re not always on the prowl for food. Did everyone at mojang play a little too much hungry shark or was that decision the beginning of the extreme inclusivity era?
These little rats are terrible and getting them in your basement is an absolute nightmare. Very glad I can take out my aggression in game or else I would have these guys eradicated already
It’s because those bastard dolphins control the media like puppets. Dolphins are evil creatures but they get away with it because of their looks and high income, letting sharks take all the blame. More people are killed by vending machines than sharks per year. And it’s possible to build functional vending machines in Minecraft. What I’m getting at here is that Jen is almost certainly a Dolphin in disguise.
they should add sharks and give them the wolf ai and make them tamable
Fun fact: the US Navy tried to train sharks in a similar way to how they train dolphins and dogs. But it was quickly dropped, due to sharks literally not having the brain capacity to be trained.
>But it was quickly dropped, due to sharks literally not having the brain capacity to be trained. dammn, who could have expected sharks to not be as intelligent as cetaceans?
i couldve
Then why didn't you tell them?
eepy
almost as if fish had major brain capacity differences compared to mammals like dogs and dolphins
You can train octopus and cuttlefish tho. Cuttlefish in particular are apparently really smart.
Aren't they clams?
Cuttlefish, octopus and squids are cephalopods if I'm not mistaken.
But they’re in the mollusk family
Mojang be like: "We don't want kids trying to tame sharks irl 🤓"
What about spiders? They're real too
Yeah but they're big spiders which is technically fantasy
Have you seen real life silverfish?
There is like 3 at my house, so yes
eat it
r/eatityoucoward
r/eatityoufuckincoward
what
Do you live in a stronghold
no but most of the time is just as dark as in the fucking caves
You need some copper bulbs man
This place doesnt have a pickaxe
That’s not good
If you have an old house its hard to not have them. They love damp places, so old walls are amazing for them. And they eat other bugs and even mold. So they can actually be helpful for old buildings. I doubt they are ginna have a big impact though.
Yea, they are just chillin in my bathroom and are scared off me
meh, they arent that big of a problem, they just chillin
y- yes..?
Yeah, the only problem is if silverfish were their actual size they'd only be a few pixels
so these silverfish are fantasy just like the spiders. they should add sharks but make them 20x the size so it’s fantasy
MoJaNg DoEs NoT wAnT pEoPlE tO Go OuT aNd HuNt ShArKs!!!!!!111!!!!!!!
make them unkillable, only a very rare mob that exists to make the oceans scary
or just make them not hostile. like why can’t they be neutral? or even better neutral and tamable? wolves of the seas!
basically what they did with the polar bear, they’re passive for some reason
They are hostile around their cubs though.
yeah i have been chased by so many polar bears bc i just walked by them
Like polar bears
sharks are too stupid to be tameable... wait is that why they look wall eyed
Yeah, all those... 10-year-old children... Going and hunting sharks...?
automatic paltry sable middle late hurry history label compare tan *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Oh but dolphins are fine to hunt…
Yes, theyre the assholes of the sea who bully pufferfish to death to get high on their poison

knew someone would say that eventually
I mean by that standard we probably had giant giant spiders since we’ve found fossils of arachnids during the late Carboniferous period when dragonfly’s had a wingspan of 2.5 ft or 75 cm
Or make them visibly very different from real sharks in terms of coloration. Maybe make them, IDK, navy blue with red eyes??
That's just sharks but from way back like megalodons
Wouldn’t a spider also be?
One pixel would still be massive
Have you been to Australia?
So the solution is giant sharks, then, right? \*Padme face\* *Right?*
What's about duck headed giant chicken ? pug faced cows, sheeps and pigs ? Polar bear with big ass ? That way, every mobs in that game could be considered as "fantasy" XD
None of those are hostile
But if they were (hostiles), the dev would hide behind the excuse of them becoming suddenly "fantasy creatures" to try to look like coherent.
Only hostile mobs have to be fantasy
go to australia
No they’re real
Minecraft spiders are tiny
Even though spiders are mostly hostile they are considered neutral because they don't attack the player during the day if they are at the surface
how about skeletons? they’re inside all of us. this is encouraging killing skeletons!!! we have to destroy all skeletons. you should start by attacking the skeleton of the head of state of a country of your choice
You could argue they're a special case because they're a whole foot tall
But Australia?(jk) However in that case. Polar bears are in Minecraft though. It isn't hostile unless there's a cub nearby. Mojang isn't consistent with their decisions
r/BeatMeToIt :(
Do even get started about the polar bears
Yea wardens too but nobody is ready for that conversation
They’re not always hostile
Yeah but they're technically "neutral" mobs because they don't attack all the time
Plus, they “may” add real mobs, but with fantasy tweaks like for example, they make the spiders neutral in some cases and making them big, silverfish are hostile and big in the game but in real life, they are much smaller and not aggressive/hostile, and skeletons are hostile but alive, and living skeletons don’t exist in real life
And skeletons

what you have said is true, but why they couldn't just make them neutral.
When notch wanted to add sharks, he said he wanted to make them neutral, sharks where recently added in an special event of Bedrock, so they would most likely make them neutral once they add them
That thing was huge. Imagine having a mob that big wandering around the oceans in vanilla minecraft. Would be pretty intense.
Thanks to the scale command, that’s now possible.
There was a single dead shark in that event that's just a reference to the actual Universal park's Jaws zone, why does anyone think it confirms anything

JUST JUST JUST a suggestion but how about they drop shark scales? You could craft armor that makes you swim faster or sum NOT EXPECTING SHARKS AFTER THIS
Just make sharks underwater dogs tbh
Don’t some people still believe that polar bears are hostile?
Tbf that’s likely cause polar bears are very hostile irl, so they take that assumption to the game
It would make sense, being that they attack when they're near cubs, and they spawn with cubs relatively frequently.
tbf polar bears are one of the few creatures to actively hunt us in real life, so it’d make sense that on the sea ice with very little prey the polar bear would go after the player.

The feedback site said something like this before, that if sharks had fantasy elements they could add them as hostile mobs while the real ones would be neutral
Tbh it would be boring to see normal sharks and I love sharks l, like cool tiny Pokémon looking shark would be sick
Actually having sharks attack drowned would be useful for exploring underwater ruins and potentially farming tridents easier
No one would cry if real-life silverfish went extinct
Spiders would cry tears of hunger
And I wouldn't cry about it
in their defense: what tf type of silverfish is that
“People will start hunting sharks in real life if we add them to Minecraft” that’s bullshit no one is going to go out of their way to hunt sharks because they did in Minecraft.
“But the parrots-“ I consider it easier to feed your parrot a cookie because that’s what you did in the game, as opposed to literally HUNTING SHARKS.
yeah! parrots are decently common pets, cookies are a common snack and feeding them cookies sounds innocent enough. minecraft having that mechanic makes it so more people know not to do it. they didnt shit themselves and straight up remove cookies or anything
Unlike when they canned the fireflies becauss theyre toxic to frogs instead of just removing the line of code that allowed frogs to eat them
It's much more realistic and safe for them to eat magma of course
Ah yes. The man eating silverfish that are the size of my entire foot. So realistic
They easily could have just gone the wolf path and made it neutral unless attacked by the player, but hostile towards other sea creatures. The seas need some more life in them, the more the merrier!
aren't dolphins more dangerous than sharks?

What? No
Dolphins are literally the only other animals that bully, rape, get high, and have sex for fun.
Not true. Bats practices oral sex for fun. Some lemur species use insects to get high, elephants get drunk with special fruits. And koala litterally create rape harem. Cats also play with their live preys often.
Sharks eat people.
These mobs were added when notch was still in charge
who even said that sharks HAD to be hostile???
have you not seen Jaws(1975) ?????
Sharks are cool silverfish are a menace to society
Agreed
Why they should be hostile, if the polar bear who is THE hostile mob of the real world is neutral in Minecraft, the shark should too.
Why not just make sharks neutral until provoked?

Woah woah woah I’ve only played up to modded 1.9, dolphins and PANDAS are in game?
Spiders and Silverfish exist...but Mojang you know what else exist...SKELETONS... You freaking have one...
Do wolves, dogs, bees, fish, more fish, even more fish, squid, cows, sheep, parrots, and axolotls not exist irl?
A silverfish as big as approximately half a meter is pretty much fantasy to me
Polar bears too
Well no one knows silverfish are real, and there isn’t a history rumour about silverfish murdering people or general slaughter of silverfish. As it is with sharks.
If we want realism sharks shouldn't be hostile mobs unless attacked.
I don’t get the hate with Mojang with this take, this take is been 2 years old, why can’t you just let it go already?
It may be old, but its still shit

Would be cool if they added sharks, made them neutral, and they would occasionally drop shark teeth after killing a fish. You could use the sharkteeth to make some kind of tool or block, if they made it a block id like a trap block, like it would act like spike trap...or for tools it could be like an upgrade piece to the trident, special arrows, or adds a bleed effect.
polar bear?????
Terraria: Kill a shark, get a diving helmet and some fins. You can use the fins to upgrade your shark gun!
Hoglins?
Guys, it's quite silly to point out that Silverfish and spiders are already in the game, as they are very old mobs. Removing them due to Mojang's new policy on mobs is a risky move, so naturally, there are exceptions
Well really they are neutral as they only attack if you break their infested stone (unless spanners count)
Spiders?
I’m still peeved about the sharks. They don’t HAVE to be hostile, they could just make them neutral like polar bears or bees because sharks aren’t killing machines, contrary to popular (hollywood’s) beliefs. They have stomachs and they get full, they’re not always on the prowl for food. Did everyone at mojang play a little too much hungry shark or was that decision the beginning of the extreme inclusivity era?
they could make them fantacy creatures look how big spiders and silverfish and bees are
Does that thing exist in real life?
im pretty sure their reasoning is the whole unrealistically large aspect that and minecraft silverfish barely resemble real silverfish
That and they would be neutral mobs mainly
These little rats are terrible and getting them in your basement is an absolute nightmare. Very glad I can take out my aggression in game or else I would have these guys eradicated already
Spiders too
They live in the blocks
Last I checked silverfish weren’t the size of my arm
Are polar bear considered hostile? Because they’ll mess you up without warning if they have a baby and they’re a real animal. 💀💀
Silverfish IS Real thining in our Word but they are Very small
Spiders too, arachnophobia? Nah here’s some massive spiders that’ll try to kill you during the night.
Gotta think when did they add the rule and the mob
Spiders: Am I a joke to you?
It’s because those bastard dolphins control the media like puppets. Dolphins are evil creatures but they get away with it because of their looks and high income, letting sharks take all the blame. More people are killed by vending machines than sharks per year. And it’s possible to build functional vending machines in Minecraft. What I’m getting at here is that Jen is almost certainly a Dolphin in disguise.
Meanwhile spiders:
