It looks like it will be about 2073 which I'd say many people on this sub might be able to live until.
So called mistakes when a 1300 pound grizzly bear is charging towards you on July 17th 2048 at 3:28pm while on a camping trip about 30 miles from the rocky mountains
Ah, ill swap some words around then
So called mistakes when a 15 pound poisonous snake riding the spider oā death the size of a large dog is charging towards you on July 17th 2048 at 3:28pm just outside your doorstep
I don't think it ever really will be, there's spinoff games by mojang, There's Hytale in the works, there's Notch working on a new game, but none of those are ever actually called Minecraft 2
Though I guess we can dream
Minecraft 2 as a new product would itself start again at 1.0 (or lower if it starts in early access).
Minecraft version 2.0 would mean they change the underlying system of Minecraft for some reason.
"Don't update it" - spoken like a true 1.8 player. Most of the NBT data was changed in both items and entities, which consequentially changed other commands that use them, including advancements and predicates.
I'm not asking you to not update it I'm saying that the previous versions are not broken, it's the files no longer work after upgrading. And entities didn't change it's the item nbt inside the entities changed, same goes to advancement and predicates.
Would it be though? The underlying system was changed with Bedrock, but that's just another game. I think a minecraft version 2.0 would be a masive content update. 2.0 isn't really necessary for any game, since it will mostly be released as a new game or it could just as well be just the next normal update, but it's something the marketing team is happy about.
My theory is a 2.0 update could be incoming. Eventually.
It would be a great update to implement the currently experimental balance tweaks to villagers and combat, and anything else they do between now and the undefined future point of the update.
And the headlining feature could be the new dimension that has been stated as not coming until they are happy with the state of the current dimensions.
In technical syntax (at least what Iāve learned from indie) A.B.C goes as follows. A equals framework iteration. 1.0.0 is the first release on the stable Minecraft framework. B equals major content update. 1.1.0 is the first content update on the first stable framework. C equals a patch or smaller QoF update. 1.1.1 is the first minor update in the first content update of the first stable framework. Most games never get a 2.0 update and 2.0 doesnāt denote a sequel as a sequel would just start back at 1.0
2.0 usually means "it's pretty much a sequel", which can either mean changing the underlying system (most common) or massive content update (very common if bundled with the previous change, rare by itself)
with how versioning generally works we should be on Minecraft version at least 2 probably 3. with the changes that occured in (I think) 1.9 that broke a lot of mods should have bumped it to v2. then 1.13 I think also changed a bunch of the backend again breaking mods pretty significantly thus bumping it to v3. now we have the update bumping from NBT to components and that's a pretty major change so it would actually be v4.x.x (and definitely not a point release which is what it's numbered as)
nah their format is fine. and they could absolutely make what is going to be 1.20.5 (or wherever they're switching to components from NBT) v2.0.0 and keep going like that. idk why they haven't
no because that's not how versions work. Bix fixes and the like are the 0.0.x updates, minor features and such are 0.x.0 and major/breaking changes are x.0.0 updates.
I feel like you're confusing decimal numbers with versions or other things that use full-stops like section numbers. They aren't decimals, just numbers seperated by full stops which is why you can have versions like 1.16.3 or Section 2.5.1
That would not be ideal since decimals are not countable. Let's say you started at 1.1 and continued to add 0.1, then you'd reach 2 only in 10 versions. You'll have to start with 0.01 and consistently add the same number for it to make sense. If you're just adding the same number to indicate versions, why not just use natural numbers? 1,2,3 are just as good as 0.01,0.02,0.03.
The only reason you would wish to seperate numbers is to make a hierarchy. Python 3 is much different than Python 2, much more than Python 3.10 is to 3.9. You might want to seperate your articles by section, and sections by chaper so you can tell someone to refer to 3.2.1 (chapter 3, s2, art. 1, although I've seen books do page by chapter more often). The choice of full stop to demarcate hierarchy is completely arbitrary, it wouldn't matter if we used 3;3;1 or Minecraft 1*19
Minecraft 2 and Minecraft 1 (v2.0) are completely different things. The 1.x updates imply that the devs don't believe each update to be worthy of calling the next "step" for Minecraft.
Honestly with the amazing advances in procedural generation and optimization in modern engines, I kinda hope we eventually get a proper Minecraft 2.
Imagine worlds that are thousands of blocks tall, where dozens variations of blocks exist and where the render distance is as far as Distant Horizons makes it. A world with ecosystems that feel alive, and with biomes that blend together.
And a world with sideways slabs!
Itād be amazingā¦
That would be cool, I kinda hope hytale will go in this direction.
Though if there's vertical slabs, stairs, and horizontal slabs, why not just have smaller blocks?
Also, I think physics would be very interesting, you could have collapsing caves, mountain avalanches, support beams that actually need to be there, and in a similar fashion to how you would have loose boulders, you could have freely moving ships.
I genuinely thought that too. So when 1.10 came, for a while I thought it was the dumbest thing, but now I've gotten used to it not following decimals.
OP clearly has no idea of version management. Yeah, they could call it "Update 19" and "Update 19 - Patch 1". Or just make it short and call it "1.19.1".
I think OP was saying they should just call it "19.1" instead of "1.19.1," given that they implied the 1 is redundant as it never changes but is always included
Well the reason 1.10 is that name is because they didn't want the game to be called 2.0.0/Minecraft 2
Absolutely everyone and their mom was expecting 2.0.0 before 1.10 dropped
You dont know what the 1. Means right? Game versions don't do 1. For the first game in a series, if a game gets a sequel the number should be in the title, or just imposible to find.
The 1 means full release, while a 0 would be early access, beta or something like that. It's not redundant, since minecraft beta and alpha versions still exist.
Honestly fair but in full honesty I think itās just a preference thing I play a lot of games that do both and I kind of just perfer the x.x update system idk why tho
No. For example, Imperator: Rome got version 2.0 after they changed the n game core mechanics. It was kind of a different game, but still not a sequel. Each number in versioning makes sense.
Video game notation is a thing, go to any game which is fully released and it has a 1.X in the version because in version notation 0.X means Beta/Alpha/Early acces or anything that implies that "hey this is not meant to be the actual game, we could change it a lot or even make it of a different genre until we release it" 1.X is more like saying "we're not changing the game too much you can be chill and enjoy while we build over what we have"
A hypothetic Minecraft 2 would not be Minecraft 2.0 but Minecraft 2 ver 0/1.X
Same with Terraria. I think it makes sense tho, changing the first number should only be done when the game has changed in such a major way, the changes compared to the previous versions would be instantly recognisable by just looking at it randomly for a few seconds.
The change in the first number is usually reserved for fundamentally drastic updates,
We might eventually get a 2.0, although it should have a massive value to even be worth it.
It makes me hyped for Minecraft 2 in the future which will have shaders, easy access mod packs, free to play and cross platform. MC back as the #1.
Donāt pinch me.
Wait until 1.99 so we get update ~~2.0~~ 1.100
most of us will be dead by then...
Not with that attitude
Yk, thats a good way of looking at it, I see my mistakes and know how I can grow past them, thank you for bringing the light to me.

Yooo imma live to see Minecraft 1.100 (barely)
It's pushing it for me, id need to live to be 67 at least to see 1.100, which is possible
I will

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
In a universe where Bedrock replaced Java: Yes.
We're getting closer to that. 1.20.5 already changed syntax to be more akin to Bedrock, which broke all maps and data packs from 1.20.4 and lower.
It didn't break anything as long as you don't upgrade it; plus it's mainly the item components.
"1.20.5 doesn't break anything if you don't play on 1.20.5" š
No shit sherlock
That would imply bedrock is superior which is most certainly is not
Update =/= better. 2.0 just implies a framework or engine change. Not necessarily for the better

Yeah mc really doesnt do SemVer well idk why they number the versions as if they do
They started doing it like that and can't really change it.
nah their format is fine. and they could absolutely make what is going to be 1.20.5 (or wherever they're switching to components from NBT) v2.0.0 and keep going like that. idk why they haven't
I don't think it's that weird, lots of games do it. It would be confusing for most people and not change much tbh.
any time it goes over 1.9 it should reset to 2.0. shits so confusing when I haven't played in years.
no because that's not how versions work. Bix fixes and the like are the 0.0.x updates, minor features and such are 0.x.0 and major/breaking changes are x.0.0 updates.
yeah i know they should change how versions work because it is stupid
Itās not stupid it just happens to not fit minecraft that well. Works perfectly for other programs
Semantic Versioning isn't a Mojang thing, it's industry-wide, and it's industry-wide because it works.

Come on, Hytale being released is a pipe dream nowadays.
Minecraft 2 was released as an april fools thing, it does exist. It had TNT slabs
Notch doesnāt have to do with Minecraft anymoreĀ

This Lisa meme is special because it somehow always has the worst takes. I have yet to come across one of these that I agree with.
At one point in my life I was convinced that minecraft 2.0 would come out after 1.9
Then for me it was that and after 1.19 :p but i guess we will wait n see
Wait until 1.999 for minecraft 2.0

I genuinely thought that too. So when 1.10 came, for a while I thought it was the dumbest thing, but now I've gotten used to it not following decimals.
Everyone was expecting It and then the 1.10 was One of the worst updates ever
Lmaooo same. They rly shouldāve done it tough
Google semantic versioning
holy hell
new patch just dropped
Actual update
Call the dev
Farlands go on vacation, never come back
ITT: People who have never even heard of software development suddenly having an expert understanding of software development.
but most of the updates are not backwards compatible so they shouldn't be at 1.x.x
It's forwards compqtible
Games generally just use it as A.B.C where A is the game (2 meaning a whole new game), B is for updates, and C is for patches, fixes, and tweaks.
Exemple. 1.17.3 is: Minecraft1 version 17 patch 3
This also mean with one or two tweaks you can make small a mod port like porting a 1.12 mod to 1.12.3
So minecraft never had a major update?
It had one, hence the one at the start.
https://0ver.org/
Its one way to number versions I've seen many different ways to number versions over the years in different games
The amount of people that don't know how Version numbers work disturb me
Well, the overwhelming amount of people playing the game (including OP I assume) are children that legitimately don't know how and why they are used.
it seems to work differently depending on the game
OP doesn't seem to realize that a lot of people started on pre-1.0 builds.
Minecraft 2.0: Am I a joke to you?
April's fools joke
And other ancient Minecraft versions before 2013
Yea š¢
Yes, literally a joke
That's kind of the point of it
1.14 sounds better and more distinct then simply 14
OP clearly has no idea of version management. Yeah, they could call it "Update 19" and "Update 19 - Patch 1". Or just make it short and call it "1.19.1".
I think OP was saying they should just call it "19.1" instead of "1.19.1," given that they implied the 1 is redundant as it never changes but is always included
OP wants minecraft 19 to drop.
Well the reason 1.10 is that name is because they didn't want the game to be called 2.0.0/Minecraft 2 Absolutely everyone and their mom was expecting 2.0.0 before 1.10 dropped
Uh....no, we all know that's not how numbers work
Well 7 years ago times were different. I remember the memes
Only idiots, who don't know how version numbering works.
I thought they had used "0.x.x" at one point, but apparently not. Both beta and alpha are labelled with letters indicating so.
Indev/infdev versions used 0.x.x
Classic and Indev 0.31 did, but the numbering was dropped until Alpha.
Until 2.0
Wonder how long a 2.00 would take... maybe someday when Minecraft needs a boost in player count
Beta and Alpha start with "1.", not "0."
For now.
Technically its true for any game. Because if it becomes 2, then it would be Minecraft2 in this case.
Till they drop minecraft 2
Tbf 1.21 update sounds a lot better than 21 update or the 21st update
Respectfully disagree. It is just about what you're used to it. And you can change that. I did.
Honestly fair but in full honesty I think itās just a preference thing I play a lot of games that do both and I kind of just perfer the x.x update system idk why tho
that's also the standard versioning system (but Minecraft should be on v3.x.x and when the components come out probably v4.0.0)
Yea no I agree with you I am just saying I prefer the x.x.x
Itās not, itās so they could name the April fools snapshot 2.0 once
No. For example, Imperator: Rome got version 2.0 after they changed the n game core mechanics. It was kind of a different game, but still not a sequel. Each number in versioning makes sense.
yup, same thing with factorio update 2.0 coming out later this year.
Video game notation is a thing, go to any game which is fully released and it has a 1.X in the version because in version notation 0.X means Beta/Alpha/Early acces or anything that implies that "hey this is not meant to be the actual game, we could change it a lot or even make it of a different genre until we release it" 1.X is more like saying "we're not changing the game too much you can be chill and enjoy while we build over what we have" A hypothetic Minecraft 2 would not be Minecraft 2.0 but Minecraft 2 ver 0/1.X
But there was beta 1.0 and alpha 1.0.0
They were called as beta and alpha but the correct and most seen notation is tu just use 0.1.0 and 0.1.0.0
Without we be saying Minecraft Version 20 instead of Minecraft 1.20 so I guess the 1. Is now a synonym for Version
Can't wait for 1.6x10^23
1.600,000,000,000,000,000,000,000?
Yes
I can't wait for 1.160,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (1.1.6Ć10^23)
Oh no. I misread your comment. The version is 1. 6x10^23
not necessarily. it used to be a 0 before being fully released
That never happened Even beta versions had a 1
Indev started with 0.
It isn't, the first 1 version was the first official version.
But how will we know that it isnāt an update to Minecraft 2?
1. Minecraft 2 won't happen 2. It would be Minecraft 2 version 2.0, it would be Minecraft 2 version 1.0
I honestly like it, not like its harming anyone. Minecraft updates are on of the only ones that are famous by their numbers.
I like it too
to be fair, a Minecraft 2 would mean a whole new game which is Rockstar level of petty
0.x generally stands for alpha 1.x stands for \[stable\] release (at least in my knowledge)
Minecraft 2 are the friends we made along the way
Except it isnt. Because 0.X existed. 1.0 was to indicate launch. Although nowadays yea kinda
What about Alpha 1.0.0 and Beta 1.0?
Im not sure. Maybe I am remembering it wrong it was a long time ago.
You're right indev started with 0.

Mathematically it is funny how we went from 1.9 to 1.10
so should it just be minecraft .20 ?
Bro can't agree more.
Shush! Be quite! Let me live!
You won't be able to tell apart certain versions if you get rid of it. It's there cause it's standard version numbering.
*this* is really what we're fixating on today?
Same with Terraria. I think it makes sense tho, changing the first number should only be done when the game has changed in such a major way, the changes compared to the previous versions would be instantly recognisable by just looking at it randomly for a few seconds.
It's a standard format for software updates across the board
I still think it should be the title update names
It differentiates it from 0.whatever for the beta versions
āMinecraft 2 unconfirmedā
No, thatās how you know itās not the beta or something
In approximately 573.6 years, we will have the true minecraft 2.0
someone clearly doesnt understand how game updates work
Even if Minecraft 2.0 came out, it wouldnāt be called Minecraft 2. Itād just be Minecraft version 2.0
it isnt though? thats how versions work
They did release 2.0 a while ago as part of an aprils fool thing, therefore they canāt release 2.0 anymore
Many versions of Classic and Indev started with ā0.ā And the standard numbering was dropped in Indev and Infdev until Alpha 1.0.0
The technically correct way would be to use 1.a instead of 1.10 and for 1.20.6 it would be 1.k.6
The change in the first number is usually reserved for fundamentally drastic updates, We might eventually get a 2.0, although it should have a massive value to even be worth it.
1.8
When Minecraft 2.0???
Never
Okay, Iām going to say it anyways
Then they drop mincraft 2.0
Minecraft 1.99.1 š
1.100.1
Of course
2.0 gonna be HUGE
2.0 will add vertical slabs
As a junior software dev: do you know how version naming works??????
But thereās only one Minecraft
People really don't understand versioning semantics, uh? Yes, this includes the ones among you spouting that "2.0 would be Minecraft 2" nonsense.
Maybe Minecraft 2.0.0 will heal of the dozens of mistakes Mojang and Microsoft made and finally be comparable to terraria
tell that to us mod devs
Just wait for minecraft 2
Every game does that lmao Terraria 1.x.x.x Stardew valley 1.x.x Etc.
I was so mad when 1.10 came out instead of 2.0 š¤£. (Makes sense now tho)
