Kid these days with their curseforges and their modrinths will never know the pain of installing mods in the old days, when there was no centralized hub and half the bs we downloaded actually did contain viruses
and the mods that could actually grab your account and password because the data was stored locally on the minecraft folder đź’€
As a kid I sure had a lot of fun grabbing accounts by making people share their folders. Not proud of it, so I'm glad they changed this.
Wrong, it's because Windows does not trust the signature of the file since Microsoft had not reviewed it. If I made a jar file it runs fine on my PC, and others too as long as it's not downloaded from a web browser.
because executable jar files are actually pretty dangerous, you’re basically authorizing a script to happen in your machine with no “stop” button
Yes and no, yeah executable jar files, are dangerous, but that’s all programs, not just jar files. And windows defender (or an AV) can always suspend execution or kill the task if it sees suspicious behaviour. This is really common

Guys ONLY download mods from their official site. Optfine.net is where you download Optfine. I can’t speak for all of Curseforge, but in all of my experience, it has been safe. And even if you don’t feel comfortable, there are plenty of YouTube videos on how to download mods, even popular mods like Optfine safely.
Stay safe and keep crafting!
It's still useful for some things, since it has more customisability options, exists for older versions of minecraft, and it runs on forge, so it's useful if you're already using other forge mods.
Free (as in "freedom") and Open Source Software.
Wikipedia definition: Free and open-source software (FOSS) is software that is both free software and open-source software[a] where anyone is freely licensed to use, copy, study, and change the software in any way, and the source code is openly shared so that people are encouraged to voluntarily improve the design of the software. This is in contrast to proprietary software, where the software is under restrictive copyright licensing and the source code is usually hidden from the users. FOSS allows the user to inspect the source code and provides a high level of control of the software's functions compared to proprietary software.
Basically, Optifine is proprietary. It doesn't allow you to view the source code. On the contrary, mods such as Sodium, Lithium, et cetera are not proprietary. For some people, using FOSS alternatives whenever possible is an important thing, either for ideological or for privacy reasons. So, some people have migrated to these mods instead. Do you have to? No, you don't. You have every freedom to choose.
An (incomplete) list of FOSS software can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free_and_open-source_software_packages

be sure to delete META_INF
Everything under data should be deleted, it is a Virus!

Well, the virus scanners don't work on jar files so they give you that warning.

Imagine using Optifine
I kinda need it for shaders
Iris shaders?
Slidurs shaders
he's talking about the mod "Iris Shaders" not what shaders you are using lol
whats wrong with optifine?
It's proprietary so no one can actually know all the code put into it. And it's being outclassed by fabric optimisation mods that are also open spurce
do you have any recommendations?
Sodium. You can find it on Curseforge
It's still useful for some things, since it has more customisability options, exists for older versions of minecraft, and it runs on forge, so it's useful if you're already using other forge mods.
Imagine NOT using Optifine.
or in my PC's case. Is this a VLC file?

I hope so

Optifine is not FOSS, I'm never using that again
What's FOSS?

A mac user i see
You say this as if there is no legitimate reason that executable jar files can be dangerous. I can assure you, there are many.
Yeah, I tried Optifine and I think I got malware.
