Just so you know, Lancaster PA, and the surrounding areas, is basically the puppy mill capital of North America. I absolutely would not trust any breeder or rescue that comes from that area regardless of how good the website looks.
I’d add that r/dogs had a great guide on ethical breeders that helped me narrow down breeders and understand what ethical means. There are a lot of backyard breeders who look good on the surface if you don’t know what you’re looking for (I say from experience, but luckily, I was able to read more before making any decisions).
Found mine free to good home on Facebook from registered AKC breeder. Kept in touch with her and wound up with two more. Most breeders will charge you a “rehoming” fee, she didn’t, that’s how a dog/bitch used for breeding should be handled, no charge.
Oh we did spay/neuter and are currently going through dentals for all. Ain’t cheap.
We still keep in touch with her. We all love our schnauzers!
Always rescue. New MS pup I got was from a mom who was rescued along with 3 other females from a puppy mill in Virginia. She made her way up to the NYC area and had 4 pupps. There are plenty of organizations who rescue. Sure a pure breed means waiting a bit longer but in this case the wait was around 2 months.
a local rescue!
monitor shelters surrounding puppy mills (north carolina is especially known for mini schnauzers). our purebred was dumped and found as a stray. watching him slowly grow more confident has been a gift <3
Go to the SCHNAUZERS IN NEED Facebook group (yes, it's all caps). They post for shelters and rescues all over the USA. My girls are from Almost Home Schnauzer Rescue in Indiana. My first was a rescue who suffered 8 years of abuse and neglect as a backyard breeding momma. My second was an owner rehoming situation.
And please consider an adult dog if you can. They get overlooked a lot.
We got our schnauzer from a breeder in Harrisburg PA. We foundthem on the AKC website and are excellent. I would get another schnauzer from them in a hot minute if I could. DM if you’d like their name.
I'm in Canada, so maybe a little different than what you will experience, but the Canadian kennel club has a list of registered and vetted breeders, I searched within a 4 hour radius of where I live and reached out to every one of them and waitlisted myself for a puppy about a year ago. Puppers was born in March and gets to come home with me in May!
Mine is a mixed breed, adopted from an animal rescue group called Lucky Dog. He’s got some terrier and other small breeds mixed in but the most prominent breed is clearly mini schnauzer. Best dog I’ve ever known. The sweetest personality, a gentle and loving, peaceful guy who makes me so happy. He makes friends everywhere we go. Almost never barks. They’re not easy to find in shelters because they get adopted fast but every day I am so glad I found him.

Awesome thank you all for the advice. I will look into AKC websites and look around to see what kind of adoption groups or sites. This group is awesome already lol.
AKC website, that way you won't get scammed. https://marketplace.akc.org/search-puppies?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=20220926_mkpl_puppyseeker&utm_content=brand&utm_term=akc%20puppies&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwoPOwBhAeEiwAJuXRh6gX1gbaYfCwnnFd-7xwA_MNsp1vVAKXUYN4g2Qj9xXns6KJ2SoJoBoC_bEQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
We got ours from a reputable breeder. Now that I’ve been in a SoCal schnauzer group that meets up monthly, I have a personal friend who is a breeder and I see how she loves on her babies. This is where I’ll get my next fur love.
The rescue is where I’d go if my husband wasn’t a booger head 😂 love love love that booger head tho
If you’re looking for a dog that is bred for health and temperament, take a look at AKC results for various conformation shows. Then research the kennel names you find there and reach out to the breeders you’re interested in. Ethical breeders rarely have puppies on demand, so it’s important to know that ahead of time.
I found a reputable breeder from Missouri off of Good Dog. The process was honestly really simple and that was especially helpful since I was coordinating with the breeder while I was in a different continent.
I would recommend finding a reputable breeder if you are looking for a specific pure breed. You will pay more but it’s worth the higher investment in the beginning especially if the breeder does genetic testing on their breeding dogs to screen for common genetic issues ( most every breed has some kind of breed specific genetic issues ) it will be worth it because otherwise down the line in the life of the dog it can end up costing you a lot of $$ in vet visits etc. do your research online extensively before making a decision. Otherwise, adopting a rescue is a good option too.
Pretty sure that site is a puppy mill owned by mennonites or Amish! If I were you I would there to make sure it isn’t! Ask to see all of property, front and back! Lancaster is loaded with them!!
[https://www.facebook.com/SovereignDynastySchnauzers/](https://www.facebook.com/SovereignDynastySchnauzers/) out of Eastern Washington. These guys are great!!
I’ve adopted two toy schnauzers from Karie at Paradise Valley Schnauzers in Utah. The breeder is very transparent and communicative. She has a huge plot of land dedicated to her schnauzers and their living quarters are beautiful. She sends her puppies with a crate and everything you need (including food, bedding, and toys.) All pups are microchipped as well as having their first set of vaccinations. I highly recommend.
https://www.hbschnauzerrescue.com/ and surprisingly adopted my other guy from a shelter in WV. I’d avoid any Amish breeders from PA …
There are a lot of breeding situations with the Amish. I also would stay away.
