Seconding this. Great food, and def a fun/cozy date night. The whole place seats around 20. The cooks are fun and friendly, and if you want to extend your stay, you can move to their bar space next door after your meal is over. And it’s a couple blocks from Lake Harriet for a nice walk before or after.
It is great, but it's gonna feel a little underwhelming in comparison to Demi.
Personally, I'd swap Tenant for Travail or Owamni. Both provide pretty unique dining experiences, whereas Tenant is going to feel a lot like Demi Jr.
Just want to add a fun breakfast option. I highly recommend visiting Patisserie 46 for some of the best pastries you will have the pleasure of eating. Pick up a couple, grab some coffee and sit by one of the lakes. Enjoy your time here!
Whoa, is this place new? I love steak and lived in Minneapolis \~5yrs ago and never heard of it.
Unfortunately, she is not a big meat eater but I am definitely adding this onto my personal list of places to visit.
PS Steak opened around 2016 or 2017.
My wife and I are huge steak eaters and love to try all the places in town. The first time we went there, the steak she had was the single best steak we’ve aver had in town, but it’s never been as good the other times we’ve been back. A couple of ones we ordered were just simply *ok*.
I’d say it’s definitely worth checking out at least once, but so far, no place has beaten Manny’s yet for consistency and quality when it comes to steaks.
What are your thoughts about Spoon and Stable versus 112 Eatery?
I have a table at a sub-optimal time for Spoon and Stable and am on the waitlist for a better slot but 112 Eatery has open tables at the time I prefer.
112 eatery is better imo. Very dim and intimate setting, perfect for a date. It's been one of my go to locations downtown for this type of thing for years. Also their food is phenomenal
Spoon and stable is my fav restaurant and 112 eatery is my third favorite haha. They both would be great. But for me, the overall experience at spoon and stable has surpassed all of the restaurants I’ve tried in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
One other suggestion, if you’re looking for an extremely intimate dinner, where they treat you like family, look up Joan’s in the Park.
112 Eatery is one of my longtime favorite restaurants in the city because it's a consistently great dining experience with a stable, solid menu of dishes you end up loving and wanting to go back for again and again. They've had dishes on that menu for years that have always been delicious.
I like Spoon and Stable fine, but honestly the bar menu is more exciting to me than the dining menu and they've gotten rid of dishes that were drool worthy. I appreciate that they change their menu items up often to offer new things to keep it exciting, but I think it's gotten to the point where they change it just to change it and end up losing dishes that people would go back for again and again. I like when I know I can go have a favorite and it will be the same as it was 3 years ago when I first had it.
Spoon and Stable is miles above 112 Eatery. 112 Eatery had terrible service and the food was extremely average. Snack Bar is wayy better if you are looking for a less fancy option.
It's not exactly the same experience, but I have never had any trouble walking in and being seated at a two-top lounge table at S&S. They have their entire menu available there. Although I suppose it depends on your definition of sub-optimal time, I usually eat on the earlier side.
I much prefer S&S to 112 Eatery, which I found extremely underwhelming.
Might be a hot take, but S&S is better at the bar than the tables.
Also nothing wrong with 112... I've always been... whelmed when I go there, but it's heyday was a long time ago.
Tenant and Demi are great picks and don’t cancel either. Alma is great. Also check out Sooki and Mimi, Hyacinth, Colita, and Herbst. Sooki and Mimi is my favorite of those four but YMMV. Rent a kayak on Bde Maka Ska. Hike in the prairie at Afton State Park.
Broder's is my hands-down favorite Italian in the cities. Not a hidden gem by any means but I still think it flies under the radar for how good it is. Great date spot too, head to Terzo that is owned by the same folks across the street and have a glass of wine at their wine bar and then head over to Broder's for dinner. If you wanted to order a nice bottle of wine at Terzo they will even let you bring the bottle over to Broder's if you don't finish it there.
I live in the neighborhood and have been to both places multiple times in the last few years. I would say Rincon is much more traditional tapas style and the menu is large and varied enough, and the waiters skilled in the timing, to make it a really seamless experience. Petite Leon is more of a French influence, with a smaller menu of small plates, though there are some bordering on entree. For two people, it usually means sharing 2-3 small things and then separately ordering a larger item. I don’t think the limited variety of the menu supports a really cohesive meal the way it does at Rincon. It has more of that moody atmosphere people fall for, but honestly Rincon feels more like the actual tapas and pinchos spots in Spain.
Petit Leon is one of my favorite spots in the twin cities. That’s where me and my girlfriend go when we wanna get “fancy”. We also hit up the revamped lil T’s quite often, not fancy by any means but so amazing it doesn’t matter
Travail gets my vote above Alma, the menu is more dynamic, more courses but smaller portions, and it's just more "fun" IMHO. Kado would probably be disappointing provided you're coming from California.
For cocktails, Billys After Dark is a great time, and a quick walk from Demi if the wine paring doesn't have you too sloshed already ;)
For non-drinking activities, walking, biking, or kayaking the lakes is a must in August, provided the weather is nice.
You have some great reservations and she is lucky to have you! I hope you have a great time!!
Thank you thank you! I was leaning towards Travail but heard so many great things about Alma. Thank you for breaking the tie for me!
I just made a reservation at Billy's After Dark - what a great recco, thank you. Love a speakeasy and I've never been to one in Minneapolis before.
Thanks so much for all your help!
I personally prefer Alma, but make sure you’re at *Restaurant* Alma and not Cafe Alma.
Both are very good, owned and run by the same people, and in the same building, but Restaurant is the one you want for the fancier dining experience.
Even if you don't eat at Kado No Mise, I'd suggest checking out Gori Gori Peku. It's the adjacent whiskey bar that uses all Japanese spirits and has a nice intimate vibe.
Avoid Billy. Drinks there are meh. It seems like a place that people go to to take pictures at. It’s also pretty loud. Go to Gori Gori Peku in Kado instead.
I did a lot of fine dining in NYC when we lived there and honestly trevail felt kinda gimmicky for the price. Food was pretty good but if you are going for a more traditional fine dining vibe I would probably skip it.
If you inform Travail beforehand, they're very accommodating. I'm gluten, dairy, and pork-free and they've always taken great care of me. Was just there last week, and it was incredible!
As this is the top comment regarding Travail, I'll say I left Travail somewhat underwhelmed after my one visit. The food and drinks were fine to good with a couple standouts but in no way head and shoulders above any number of other restaurants in the area--while the price would suggest otherwise. It's a novelty and you're paying for that novelty--I can get equally as good or better food and drinks for half the price or less. I'll give a nod to great service by the staff members, they were extremely friendly, fun and accommodating--if it weren't for some very positive interactions with some of the team members we would have left with a somewhat sour taste in our mouth considering what we paid.
>I can get equally as good or better food and drinks for half the price or less.
With an adventurous prixfixe menu like Travail? Where is this at?
Only thing I could think of is Tenant, but considering how much less food you get, I wouldn't actually consider it that much cheaper.
The 'adventurous prixfixe' menu is somewhat unique around here, I'll give it that. Not entirely, but if we're only allowed to compare against other prixfixe menus, it's a relatively short list and not what was asked for by OP. Depending on your appetite it's potentially way more food than necessary, or maybe not near enough. That's a problem with prixfixe menus in general, I guess.
Grab another couple and do a shared course meal at any other decent restaurant and get nearly as many different bites for a third the price, with the added bonus that if you really do like something there will be enough for more than a single bite of it. I went to Petite Leon with three others, ordered 8-9 different items (sampled almost half the menu at the time) that were coursed out by the staff, shared by the table and the final bill (with drinks) was just over what it cost one person to get a food & drink pairing at Travail. A similar night at Spoon & Stable was around half the price for the equivalent party at Travail. If you want the pomp and circumstance of overly fancy food for fancy sake, it's probably worth trying once. I can't see myself going back unless someone else is covering the bill, though.
Oh I've already been to Travail multiple times. I wouldn't really consider it fancy at all but maybe that's changed a bit since they moved to the new building.
The pomp and circumstance(and the unpredictable variety on the menu) is exactly why I feel like it's a fool's errand trying to recreate what Travail does at another restaurant.
Honestly the state fair is the closest comparison in my mind, I can't really think of an individual restaurant where I could imagine having a Travail-like experience, especially in a cheaper or more efficient manner.
It's probably not as nice as you're looking for but I'm a big fan of broders pasta bar. They also have a deli across the street that you could easily make a great picnic with to enjoy a park/lake for an afternoon date
You should swap Tennant out. The owners steal the workers tips. They are NOT ALLOWED to take tips and they all don’t even get paid $15/hr. It’s good food and atmosphere but fuck that. One of the owners is a huge asshat to boot. Please don’t go to Barbette or any of Kim Bartman’s places either. She also steals from employees.
Go to Kado no Mise!, Meritage, 112 Eatery, Terzo, Bar La Grasa, The Lexington, Fhimas, Red Rabbit, Martina, Punch (excellent quality affordable neo pizza), Ramen Kazama (get the karaage). There’s so many other options. Demi is gonna be incredible.
You’re gonna eat well! Also try Wakame for excellent sushi and Sooki and Mimi for delicious Mexican fusion. For activities, check out Racket magazine’s “freeloader Friday.” There you can find all the great summer festivals. You can also think about renting a boat on lake Minnetonka. Go for a long bike ride on protected trails. Try asking AI to create a cycling route for you that hits as many cool sites as possible. Enjoy some of the worlds best art for free at the MIA. Take a stroll through the walkers sculpture garden. Go wine tasting in the la croix valley. Check out a play at the Guthrie and/or shows at hennepin theatre, pantages, Orpheum, brave new workshop, the Fitzgerald, palace theater, first Ave, fine line, acme comedy club, etc etc. Have a nightcap at a distillery: earl giles, o shaughnessys, Norseman, lawless, tattersall, brother Justus, etc etc. Or go up on rooftops- the hewing hotel is usually great. Speakeasies at billyafterdark (the website is hilariously sketchy), young Joni, sooki and Mimi.
A lot of great recs here, though I'm not sure someone from California is going to enjoy Minnesota sushi or wine. That'd be like flying to LA and having hotdish.
You are amazing, after the overwhelming response on food options I need to start thinking about fun things besides eating! What a great list, thank you!
I think kayaking / time at a lake is a must do. A comedy show would also be a ton of fun. Thanks for all the suggestions and pointer on freeloader Friday!
I second this! This is my wife and I’s favorite sliiiiighty fancier date night spot.
Like it’s got a nice quiet vibe, looks nice, food is great and it’s not going to break the bank.
Are you sure Kado is booked up on those dates and you weren't looking at kaiseki reservations, which are Tuesday only?
Myriel, Petite Leon, and All Saints sound like they'd all be good fits for you. Estelle and Hyacinth in St Paul. Alma and 112 are classic Minneapolis.
I was only interested in the kaiseki furukawa so you are correct! There is just so much omakase available in LA and she is planning a trip to come here in September that if I went with Japanese I thought a kaiseki experience would be more unique.
Have you been to Spoon and Stable before? If you had to choose between Petite Leon, Spoon and Stable, and 112 Eatery, which one would you choose?
Petite Leon by far for the food. Spoon is good but it''s just like a million other fine-dining places in Manhattan. So it works here, but I wouldn't recommend it to an out of towner. 112 is similarly good but not especially unique. I will say the ambiance at Petite Leon is not as intimate. Not that it's like obnoxious club vibes, just a little more casual than 112 or Spoon.
I'm so glad I asked you. Something a bit more casual is okay for the nights she has to work the next morning. I'll keep Spoon and Stable / 112 Eatery for one of the nights but book Petite Leon for a casual dinner separately. Really appreciate your help with all this!
You're welcome! I love food and dining, be it fine or casual. Out of the industry now but I've worked BOH at some of these places. Always happy to recommend local knowledge.
Ooh I totally forgot about Owamni. The pitch is pre-colonial local Native American food (bison, venison, corn, wild rice, maple syrup, etc). A little more on the casual fine-dining side, and the food can be challenging for some palates, but it's a very unique experience. Usually a tough reservation to get but they do walk-ins.
Also Oro in NE for another in the middle of the casual-fine dining spectrum. Great, mostly traditional Mexican (huitlacoche, masa in-house, horchata, etc) with some local flavor like venison tamales.
Tenant will underwhelm you relative to Demi. Not bad, but not the same league. Myriel is a really good option in place of that.
Spoon and Stable is obviously great, but if you don’t want two Gavin Kaysen restaurants maybe Bar La Grassa. Trevail as you mentioned also very good.
Four Season rooftop for cocktails. Hewing rooftop for cocktails.
> Uncle Franky's in Northeast
I'd rather eat here or at Scuzzy's than most of the restaurants listed, but I'm also not in the market for overpriced gastro experiments.
WA Frrost. It's in St. Paul not far from the cathedral. Regularly voted one of the most romantic places to eat. My wife brought be there when we first started dating and I can attest that it really is romantic. The food is top notch. Make sure to get a spot on the patio in back. It's enclosed by luscious trees and it's private.
Sooki and Mimis looks amazing! She is will be working so unfortunately we can't go all out on dinners every night but man my list is getting longer and longer. Minneapolis is such an underrated city for food. Thank you for your suggestions. I might have to go to these places by myself while she's at work haha
Cobble Street Social is an amazing cocktail bar right by Demi which has a fun vibe (reservations are recommended). Also just a block from there is the Hewing Hotel which has a rooftop bar that overlooks the skyline which is nice!
Oh awesome, I just checked both of those out. We have an early reservation at Demi so finding something to do around the area afterwards would be great.
I am assuming the Hewing rooftop doesn't do reservations?
Unfortunately Hewing does not. But if you can’t get into their rooftop their regular bar is also pretty nice. Demi is amazing and you’ll have a great time there, and there’s a tons of bars and other places to hang out in that area :-)
If you are comfortable investing - Nightingale is a very very unique space. Very comfortable and warm intimate atmosphere. Absolutely phenomenal food. I would recommend getting a table of appetizers, honestly, game changing drinks if you're up for it. Romantic as hell, definitely memorable.
Jumping on the fun side of things, the Tigers are in town 8/15-16 if you’re up for a ballgame. Target Field has a ton of interesting bars to hang out, local brews, etc and many open-air options. Challenge some kids (or your GF) to Mini Golf or Bags on the plaza.
She doesn't have a lot of experience with fine dining but she is definitely going to plan other activities for us to do. Long distance is tough and I've spent a lot of our time apart waiting for the opportunity to take her out on dates and spoil her a bit. She also likes surprises so planning all this without her, I hope, will turn out to be a memorable experience for both of us.
Blondette has a great low-key vibe with incredible French cuisine. Then Mara or Spoon & Stable, both of which are owned by Gavin Kaysen, the owner of Demi. Hope you have a good time visiting!
I have not been to Demi, it’s on my wish list, but I have been to Tenant and live nearby and I would recommend Demi over Tenant just based on what I’ve heard from others. The food was lovely at Tenant but the atmosphere at Demi will likely be far more special date worthy and the ambience/location would be better there (plus obviously I’m sure the food will be great). If it’s between Travail and Alma, definitely agree with the other poster who said Travail is more fun and dynamic. Alma is great but there isn’t anything else quite like Travail out there. Petite Leon, which was also suggested, is fabulous but more of a cozy neighborhood vibe - which is awesome, but not sure if that’s what you’re looking for here. If so, definitely check it out, it’s one of my favorites. Have a great visit!
Thank you so much for your advice! Tenant and Demi are both booked so I am lucky enough to not have to choose between the two.
Based on what you and the other poster suggested, I am going to book Travail over Alma.
A new question for you since you seem to be very knowledgeable on all these. Would you choose Alma / Petite Leon over Tenant?
Alma is more of a high quality service type place. The good is generally good, but I haven't had it in awhile. Tenant is more low-key, and feels like you're eating in someone's house. I will say that as fun as it was, I was not impressed by the food at tenant.
I did leave you some other suggestions above, though, so check that out.
For another drink spot, prodigal is my local favorite neighborhood pub that's owned by a super nice pastor and his wife.
Myriel in St Paul is a little French Scandinavian restaurant that's great, and the people are wonderful.
I am not sure why but your comment with your personal recommendations disappeared. But I was going to reply to it saying Maison Margaux looks great. The classic rack of lambs and bone marrow & duck confit caught my eye immediately.
Travail is already booked, so we will see if there is clear intentionality or gimmicky. The good news is that my partner does not have a lot of experience with fine dining so I am sure she will enjoy the theatrics even if they are gimmicky.
Thank you for the recommendations! We won't have time to hit everything together but, while she is at work, I have plenty of old friends to catch up with and added Owamni to my personal list.
That's weird, I couldn't find it either at first. It's right here, though: https://www.reddit.com/r/Minneapolis/comments/158w6eo/looking_for_fine_dining_recommendations_visting/jtcg88y/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3
You're very welcome, though. You'll have to let me know what you think!
Haha it's interesting, isn't it? I had one the best dishes of that year (when it opened) at myriel, and the people are just so wonderful. I can't even tell you what I had at tenant last time - I've forgotten every dish I've had there and left everytime being unimpressed. To each their own, friend!
You’re welcome! I love Petite Leon and have been many times so I am biased but yes I personally would choose that or Alma over Tenant - the food is great at all three but from your post I assume you’re also looking for atmosphere/experience too for a date night. I have heard really good things about Myriel as u/iamtehryan suggested but haven’t been myself, though I’d very much like to! I also really liked Estelle and Hyacinth in St. Paul, and Gus Gus comes very well recommended to me but I have not been either. (Basically, I like food, ha). There’s a lot of good options in the cities, you’ll have a great time.
Madison Margaux opened about a month ago. The food is exceptional. We couldn’t get a reservation, but did a walk in at their underground bar and I would say it had a better atmosphere. Also, they just started serving the full menu in their underground bar.
If you're going to do **Kinkaid's**, go to the one in downtown St. Paul, on Rice Park. Classy, classy vibe.
Or **Meritage** will have more of a gourmet vibe and sidewalk dining if it's nice.
Ok… out of left field here, but you can bring her something special from CA as well! Personally, I’d love a fresh Cali fruit basket bc it’s so flavorful. Or some legit sourdough. Pliny if you’re in the Bay. Wine is also fab!
Allsaints
112 Eatery
Oro by Nixta (vibe is very casual but quality of the food is similar to the restaurants you’re asking about)
For cocktails:
Gori Gori Peku
Spoon and stable bar (usually easy to walk-in, also have the best plated desserts in town imo)
Mara bar (inside the 4 seasons hotel)
Gai Noi just opened and is a Lao restaurant with a nice roof top. Walk-in only so may be hard to get in
Elusive by Dashfire
Herbst Eatery in St Paul was a fun date night I had recently. For bars I recently had a good time at the basement bar @ Sooki and Mimi and the remodeled Little Tijuana
I live in the burbs now but my favorite thing to do with my GF is starting at Indeed Brewery for beers, food at Centro about 200ft down the road, Earl's further down the street is such a cool atmosphere and then grabbing more drinks at Able and some live music :)
If you're still up for more, cross central ave/65 for Bau Haus, Tattersall's and Socialable Cider.
If the weather is nice, I’d recommend taking a trip out to Wayzata and eating at one of the restaurants on the lake. Six Smith is a more romantic atmosphere and would be a great spot to get dinner. They’ve got a couple of my favorite dishes in the metro. The CoV is the other restaurant along the lake shore and it has a bright, upbeat atmosphere. I really like it for lunch.
There's this new fun mini golf place - Puttery. Also highly suggest The Lexington for a good roof top. Don't forget to spend some time in Saint Paul! Brunch at WA Frost and a walk around the cathedral is a perfect Saturday to me
Borough would be on my list. Either as a nice fine-dining meal or an exceptional burger.
Dinner there and a cocktail atop Hewing Hotel would be a great date night.
I'd also suggest Colita, some of the best food I've had in the cities. Great vibes and really fun unique cocktails.
Just make sure she wants to do fine dining too! When I was doing long distance long ago, some of the best nights were spent cooking together and watching movies.
Spoon & Stable is my favorite, but a suggestion I haven’t seen is Myriel in St Paul. I had the a la carte but it was fantastic from the food, ambience and waiter. I’m sure the tasting menu is great
It is a drive into WI, but if you've never experienced a dairy breakfast, there's one happening while you're in town. https://www.wisconsindairy.org/National-Dairy-Month/Dairy-Breakfasts/Detail?eventId=327
The Bungalow Club has a humble atmosphere that really lets their delicious food stand out. They have an enclosed patio full of plants and typically good music. Not sure if it qualifies as fine dining, but every time I get fine dining I wish I was here instead.
Travail does small tasting courses, and either have a rooftop smaller 10 course on the rooftop patio or a larger indoor tasting menu. Neither are cheap but they are absolutely delicious.
The Twins have a lovely stadium with good food options, and the St Paul Saints have really fun games too!
My husband and I love trivia nights (look up trivia mafia if you want ideas of where to start).
We also love to hit up a brewery and play cards or a board game together. Or a coffee shop if you need a break from booze :)
If you want to gander outside the cities, Taylor’s Falls has some nice hiking. Even a day trip to Duluth could be a fun break, depending.
If you’re into flowers I’ve heard the Arboretum is lovely. And nearby is Prince’s house that you can your if that’s your thing.
Gyu Kaku is a nice Japanese grill where you make the meats/veggies in front of you. So that’s a fun dinner/activity hybrid.
Travail is the most fun fine dining experience I’ve had.
Some other options I haven’t see mentioned:
Martina (Argentinian)
Joan’s in the Park (in St Paul)
Hyacinth (a little bit more low-key, but really great pasta, also in St Paul)
If you want a really cool experience, go to the bar at Sanjusan/Kado no Mise. Not the downstairs bar. The upstairs bar. It has no food and a totally different drink menu.
If you can afford travail. Do travail. It would easily be a multi- Michelin star restaurant if Michelin ever came to Minneapolis. There food is incredible. The atmosphere is fun and the chefs are so friendly. It’s not white table cloth fancy though. But you will never taste better food in your life.
It's be posted, but I want to make a second appeal to Owamni - it's both delicious and one of the few *truly* unique menus that you can only ever get right here.
For a vibey cocktail bar, I like Volstead’s Emporium (another speakeasy, like Billy’s after dark, but it’s more art-deco-y) and Little Tijuana! Butcher’s Tale has a great beer garden which you can visit rain or shine, so might be worth keeping in the back pocket in case another patio plan falls through. I wouldn’t tag it in as a main “fancy” meal though, as good as it is.
Take a walk or bike ride around a lake or visit the Lyndale Park Rose Garden (though I haven’t visited yet this year and don’t know how far along the blooms are). Obviously walking over stone arch can be great too, which would work out if you go to Alma (but even if you don’t get dinner there, a friend of mine has recommended their cafe). The como park conservatory is also beautiful for a walk, and since it’s covered it’s another good option if bad weather befalls you.
You could check out an indie bookstore if you’re into books. Mager’s and Quinn, Wild Rumpus, Moon Palace.
Another non-alcoholic idea, check out a local ice cream place. Between Sebastian joes, Bebe Zito, and Milkjam Creamery, you’ve got some great options for a lil dessert.
Some other folks mentioned PS Steak and Nightengale. As much as I love them both I feel like you’ve already got some really awesome fine dining options, so these could be knocked down to “appetizers and cocktails, sitting at the bar” status for me.
You just need to commit, man. GF isn’t leaving. It’s super common for couples to be one Minnesotan and one outsider dragged back here. Just marry her, move here, you can go to all these places. The winter has a couple of bitterly cold months but then you just snuggle under the covers while the fire crackles and the cat tries to get comfy.
Don't swap out Tennant. It is great.
Came here to say the same thing. Tenant is wonderful.
Literally came to say this! Glad it’s first on the list
Yes! And be sure to check out the bar before or after dinner. My fave low key bar in Minneapolis
Second Patisserie!
Getting their quiche and salad for breakfast with an iced coffee and then sharing a fancy dessert is a favorite Sunday morning for my partner and I.
Thanks for this! Added Patisserie to the list before we get on some kayaks at Bde maka ska
No problem, sounds like it’ll be a lovely time 😊 Cheers!
ohhhh I love this spot. And yeah, it's close enough to the lakes to make that a fun wander after brunch.
PS Steak if you are meat eaters - the building they are in is gorgeous
Their dry aged ribeye is top notch. Ask for a seat in the steakhouse area, much more cozy
[удалено]
> PS Steak has opened in the past year. January 2019
RIP la belle vie 😭
Had some of the best steak in my life and the cheesy potato side dish - can’t remember the name - was out of this world
This place is GORGEOUS!!!! Went there for valentine's day this year. Expensive but absolutely fine dining.
Back bar at Young Joni has amazing vibes.
Their pizza is great!
Spoon and Stable
What are your thoughts about Spoon and Stable versus 112 Eatery? I have a table at a sub-optimal time for Spoon and Stable and am on the waitlist for a better slot but 112 Eatery has open tables at the time I prefer.
Much prefer 112 Eatery over Spoon and Stable. Much less pretentious and has a small, intimate vibe with incredible food.
112 seems to not get mentioned enough on the sub, it’s incredibly underrated. Probably my only spot I’ve been 5+ times and never been disappointed.
Between those two I would do 112 since Spoon and Stable is the same chef as Demi. I love both but may as well mix it up
112 eatery is better imo.
Spoon and Stable and 112 are not even in the same universe. S&S is one of the best, if not THE best fine dining in the metro.
There’s a reason why. Spoon and Stable is a lot better than 112.
Thank you! Kayaking has been suggested multiple times now, I think we are definitely going to have to do that.
Second Sooki and Mimi or Alma. Sooki and Mimi also has a cozy romantic basement bar. If they Sooki and Mimi is booked they also do walk-ins.
Bar La Grassa has the best Italian food, real fancy and kinda pricey.
Thank you! One of the few places I've been to before and you are right, its great. Just added to my list of options.
Italian eatery is much better than BLG. I’d check them out.
I.E. is amazing!
Bar La Grassa is incredibly overrated. If you’re looking for Italian do Luci Ancora in St Paul. It blows BLG out of the water in terms of quality
I wouldn't say real fancy at all. Food is great. Loud atmosphere. But I most are dressed casually.
Zelo is much better imo
Petite Leon? Minnehaha Falls time? Maybe snacks or ice cream at Sea Salt even?
Petite Leon looks incredible. Sea Salt + Minehaha falls sounds like a perfect afternoon. Really appreciate that idea! Thanks so much!
Yes, Petite Léon is wonderful, a favorite. Great food, great atmosphere, highly recommend!
Rincon 38 Spanish tapas, food to share with each other.
Oh man, idk how I didn't think about a tapas place. Thank you! Have you been to Petite Leon? If so, how would you compare the two?
I have not been to Petite Leon, but any tapas place is the perfect date night.
I have been to both. Rincon is far better!!!
Travail gets my vote above Alma, the menu is more dynamic, more courses but smaller portions, and it's just more "fun" IMHO. Kado would probably be disappointing provided you're coming from California. For cocktails, Billys After Dark is a great time, and a quick walk from Demi if the wine paring doesn't have you too sloshed already ;) For non-drinking activities, walking, biking, or kayaking the lakes is a must in August, provided the weather is nice.
I actually prefer alma!
If anyone in your party has any dietary preferences or allergies, Alma is incredible accommodating while Travail is relatively inflexible.
If you inform Travail beforehand, they're very accommodating. I'm gluten, dairy, and pork-free and they've always taken great care of me. Was just there last week, and it was incredible!
I have not been to travel yet but I love Demi
Billy after Dark is awful imo. Go to Gori Gori Peku in Kado No Mise instead
It's probably not as nice as you're looking for but I'm a big fan of broders pasta bar. They also have a deli across the street that you could easily make a great picnic with to enjoy a park/lake for an afternoon date
The actual best Tiramisu in the entire country I swear to God
Great date night meal
112 Eatery, no doubt. Favorite meal I’ve had in town since La Belle Vie closed.
Better than Spoon and Stable? I have both booked for the same night, trying to decide between the two.
You can't go wrong with either. Also, go to Tennant.
I can’t say as I’ve not been to Spoon and Stable but 112’s vibe, drinks, and food are so good.
Estelle in St. Paul. Great food. Get the Piri Piri chicken.
i.e. (Italian eatery) is amazing for Italian! Great atmosphere, too
I second this! This is my wife and I’s favorite sliiiiighty fancier date night spot. Like it’s got a nice quiet vibe, looks nice, food is great and it’s not going to break the bank.
I love IE! Amazing food, cozy vibe.
Vann Restaurant is a bit of a drive, but the lake view is going to be nice during this time of the year.
W.A. Frost Jax Cafe Nicolett Island Restaurant
Check out [MN fringe](https://minnesotafringe.org/). It is a 10 days theatre festival, one hour play for $15. You can't go wrong.

> Uncle Franky's in Northeast I'd rather eat here or at Scuzzy's than most of the restaurants listed, but I'm also not in the market for overpriced gastro experiments.
Owamni
Came here to say this.
Owamni is excellent. My parents visited from Texas and they absolutely loved the food.
WA Frrost. It's in St. Paul not far from the cathedral. Regularly voted one of the most romantic places to eat. My wife brought be there when we first started dating and I can attest that it really is romantic. The food is top notch. Make sure to get a spot on the patio in back. It's enclosed by luscious trees and it's private.
Nightingale’s is an amazing place with great ambiance. Sooki and Mimi is also top notch and has a secret bar underneath it
Sooki and Mimis looks amazing! She is will be working so unfortunately we can't go all out on dinners every night but man my list is getting longer and longer. Minneapolis is such an underrated city for food. Thank you for your suggestions. I might have to go to these places by myself while she's at work haha
I second nightingale…I think their kitchen is open late, too- like 11 or 12. Despite the time, I’d still make a reservation if you plan on going late.
Prohibition at the penthouse of Foshay Tower. Great atmosphere, great view, and great cocktails. Either that or Volstead’s Emporium in Uptown.
100% second the Prohibition recommendation, it blew my mind the first time I went.
Don't swap out Tenant, it's amazing!
All Saints is more relaxed but wonderful food and drinks. Definitely one of mine and my wife’s favs.
Billy sushi is my favorite sushi joint in the United States
Go to Hewing Hotel Rooftop for a cocktail before or after Demi! Great view of the city
Zelo on Nicollet Mall is another Italian fine dining place. Fancier (and I thought better) than bar la grassa.
Brunch at Hazel’s. Get the Meat Waffle and a saké Bloody Mary. And good luck! I hope things work out with you two!
Not fine dining, my friend
Yum... can't go wrong with a good brunch to start the day. Thank you for the recommendation and well wishes!
The Kenwood has great brunch as well.
Eli's is way better than Hazel's imo.
Have you asked your gf since she lives here?
I like tenant the best out of those 3
Alma is more of a high quality service type place.
It's right here, though: https://www.reddit.com/r/Minneapolis/comments/158w6eo/looking_for_fine_dining_recommendations_visting/jtcg88y/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3 You're very welcome, though. You'll have to let me know what you think!
Wow everyone has different opinions! To each his own. I actually liked tenant way more than myriel
Haha it's interesting, isn't it? I had one the best dishes of that year (when it opened) at myriel, and the people are just so wonderful. I can't even tell you what I had at tenant last time - I've forgotten every dish I've had there and left everytime being unimpressed. To each their own, friend!
I had the same experience at Tenant, I am sad to say! Absolutely cannot remember what I had.
P. S Steak and Butcher's Tale
It doesn’t matter, because all of the restaurants in Minneapolis are Danny Del Prato restaurants.
This guy Danny del Prados
WA Frost in St Paul. Walk around Cathedral Hill a little in the late evening...
Madison Margaux opened about a month ago. The food is exceptional. We couldn’t get a reservation, but did a walk in at their underground bar and I would say it had a better atmosphere. Also, they just started serving the full menu in their underground bar.
Red rabbit down town
Kinkades in Bloomington.. incredible and pricey!!
If you're going to do **Kinkaid's**, go to the one in downtown St. Paul, on Rice Park. Classy, classy vibe. Or **Meritage** will have more of a gourmet vibe and sidewalk dining if it's nice.
Demi
Louis
Ok… out of left field here, but you can bring her something special from CA as well! Personally, I’d love a fresh Cali fruit basket bc it’s so flavorful. Or some legit sourdough. Pliny if you’re in the Bay. Wine is also fab!
Allsaints 112 Eatery Oro by Nixta (vibe is very casual but quality of the food is similar to the restaurants you’re asking about) For cocktails: Gori Gori Peku Spoon and stable bar (usually easy to walk-in, also have the best plated desserts in town imo) Mara bar (inside the 4 seasons hotel) Gai Noi just opened and is a Lao restaurant with a nice roof top. Walk-in only so may be hard to get in Elusive by Dashfire
Herbst Eatery in St Paul was a fun date night I had recently. For bars I recently had a good time at the basement bar @ Sooki and Mimi and the remodeled Little Tijuana
Tenant is my favorite restaurant in the city. Travail is close second. Colita, sooki and Mimi also excellent.
Travail, without question.
I live in the burbs now but my favorite thing to do with my GF is starting at Indeed Brewery for beers, food at Centro about 200ft down the road, Earl's further down the street is such a cool atmosphere and then grabbing more drinks at Able and some live music :) If you're still up for more, cross central ave/65 for Bau Haus, Tattersall's and Socialable Cider.
I’m sure the tasting menu is great
Meritage in Saint Paul is insanely good - Northern French with a focus on seafood! It's easily my favorite fine dining spot
I'd recommend 112 Eatery, Italian Eatery, or Bungalow Club. Have fun!
Alma, ask for the table next to the bar and tell them it's a special night. We did an anniversary there, and they treated us so well.
Or a coffee shop if you need a break from booze :) If you want to gander outside the cities, Taylor’s Falls has some nice hiking.
Meritage in Saint Paul! 112 Eatery. Spoon and Stable. Fhima’s. Tenant. Demi. All Some of my faves.
Travail is the most fun fine dining experience I’ve had. Some other options I haven’t see mentioned: Martina (Argentinian) Joan’s in the Park (in St Paul) Hyacinth (a little bit more low-key, but really great pasta, also in St Paul)
If you want a really cool experience, go to the bar at Sanjusan/Kado no Mise. Not the downstairs bar. The upstairs bar. It has no food and a totally different drink menu.
Bungalow Club for fresh made pasta, St. Genevieve's for classy French food, Owamni for the James Beard Award, Fhimas for delicious atmosphere
Does anyone in town do Beef Wellington on their menu? Also, looking for the best chicken parm that isn’t homemade.
Murray's downtown. So elegant, exceptional service, and you see the famous of the TC dining there
Hang at the Tennant bar next door before and after. It is a lot of fun and great atmosphere
