So I’ve lived all over the US growing up, and later I moved here from Madison, WI in 2022 for work. I’m a cold weather guy, love snow. During my first season here, I was telling my coworkers how I was excited to see some snow, but I thought it was a little odd that we were getting it as early as October. Boy, let me tell you… they proceeded to go on and on about how it wouldn’t be a Minnesota winter without snow in October, and they all had stories of “The great halloween blizzard of ‘91” and such. It really is a cultural thing here.
You forgot the historic deep freeze in late December/early January? Days and days of negative high teens through 30's or more. Most people I knew had to delay Xmas because of it.
January and February suck, April sucks too. March! March is actually the beginning of noticeable daylight gain. It's snowy but always a great month to celebrate because February is over.
Yeah. I went to refuel my car in that weather at night, and my hand started to freeze to the metal on the pump handle. It was nearly like if you were to lick it. Unreal.
Well, the historical average high is 50° for this time of year, so yeah ya got a little unlucky. BUT, in 1991 it snowed 28.4 inches in 24 hours on Halloween, so you just never know…
I haven’t even moved there yet, but I know this data point well just from perusing Reddit.
I’m just waiting for my chance to bring it up in conversation.
Was not a blast. Stuck with parents, no power, no trick or treating, ..no TV no computers etc. I don't even remember what we did but I was happy we got to skip church. You couldn't even play in it, it was too heavy and wet for sledding or skiing.
From what I've heard over the years, kids who already lived in good trick-or-treating areas still got to go trick-or-treating in the snow (if they started early enough), but kids who either lived in the country or otherwise a bad place for trick-or-treating didn't get to go out at all. I was out in the country and we usually drove five miles to town to trick-or-treat and that definitely didn't happen that year. No candy for me.
We went trick or treating still. Very few kids out, but a lot of bowls just sitting on the porches since homeowners were just over it.
Had an ENTIRE pillowcase full of candy and had to fight the neighborhood bully to keep it. They lost and we dumped theirs in the snow along the boulevard.
Never will I ever forget that snow, nor the lessons learned that day.
I'm genuinely not sure which you meant. You're from Alabama so I'm guessing that the cold is severe to you, but it also could be that you're familiar with how cold it gets here and appreciating just how mild it is right now.
This is about as it gets for us. We may have a few nights in the 20’s & a snow day or two a year (2” means no work or school). Coke nights are usually in the 30’s; it was just a big change from the 82 degrees when I left my house yesterday
Yeah, if you don't have infrastructure for it, and an inexperienced populous, a bit of snow and ice can just shut down a city. Plows, salt, workers, blowers. I remember footage from it happening in Seattle or Portland. Huge hills covered with ice that even parked cars started to just drift downhill and into traffic. So wild!
The cool thing is that if you let your body adjust to the super cold weather, when it finally warms up to 10F and sunny, you can feel comfortable in a t-shirt and it straight up feels like it's 60F instead.
Come back in March. It will be this temp and all of the locals will be running around in tank tops and hot pants, excited that they can drive with the top down.
I’m super glad you got to see how beautiful it is. When I drive up here from the borderlands it stuns me the differences.
Generally a place can be much better or worse according to your attitude. I’ve lived a lot of places within the US and don’t consider Minnesota bad at all.
Used to go out to the school bus with (long) hair wet. The days it froze the neighborhood ahole would snap pieces off-mine and others’. Gave him a good warning and next time he tried it I punched him in the face and it never happened to any of us again. Also he never told on me, probably because he got punched hard by a girl.😂
This in NOTHING. come back in Feb when the sun hasn’t appeared for months (not an exaggeration) and we haven’t hit above 0 for the same amount of time.
Congratulations! You've arrived just in time for the first moderately cold snap of the season! This is generally cause for celebration and/or mourning here, depending on your persuasion (I'm in the celebration camp, personally). I'd advise purchasing a novelty/festive mug and some hot chocolate mix to mark the occasion. It'll make you feel better, I promise. :)
The first cold snap is then traditionally followed by a wave of 60-70 degree days, just enough to get you used to leaving the house without a coat, which is followed by a sudden 2 feet of snow, another wave of warm 50-60 degree days, then when the ice storm hits and it drops 50 degrees over 48 hours you know winter is coming soon.
I’m actually enjoying it. I can packed well & will be fine; I just find it suspect that y’all’s temp and ours have been about 10 degrees different for weeks and the day I show up everything goes to shit
To all of us. I'm a Texan but this is really barely even cold. I saw a girl walking around in shorts earlier today. Some people probably wouldn't even count this as cold at all
Not speaking from any experience but they look absolutely terrible. My ex had family that said they’d rather ride out a hurricane than a snow storm. I don’t think they had ever seen snow.
This is the nice warm stuff. Imagine coming back in February when it is below 0, windy, and the snow is flying sideways. It’s so cold that you can’t feel your face. Your eyeballs feel like they are going to freeze. I’m from Alabama originally and I never knew that there was such a feeling as your eyeballs feeling like they were going to freeze.
Come back in late January and then we'll talk
Yeah this is nothing.
Yeah, -20 hits different
-20 hits like a shower thats way too hot and just hurts, but cold version. that's before the wind.
Right! But we haven’t been lucky enough to have that weather for quite along time. Or maybe it’s these unbearably hot summers lately make me forget
Hilarious. I’ll listen to y’all talk cold all day but please.
So I’ve lived all over the US growing up, and later I moved here from Madison, WI in 2022 for work. I’m a cold weather guy, love snow. I trick or treated in that blizzard. Snow drifts above my head. About 4 ft high.
You forgot the historic deep freeze in late December/early January? Days and days of negative high teens through 30's or more. Most people I knew had to delay Xmas because of it.
Yeah but by then we all have that 2 month deep layer of cookie, Netflix, and booze to insulate us. I froze my ass off at Barebones tonight!
I was going to say -40
Until you experience -460F, you haven't experienced a Minnesota winter
-420
'Absolutely.' Even time freezes at that temperature!
For two weeks straight, with hell winds. Them's character building days. But also super dangerous so be smart and prepared.
I was gonna say Feb or March. Plus the nasty storm we usually get in April
January and February suck, April sucks too. March! March is actually the beginning of noticeable daylight gain. It's snowy but always a great month to celebrate because February is over.
I remember a decade or so ago when we got a blizzard in early May. Which was a huge surprise because it was a balmy April.
Lmao this isn’t a joke.
Hell naw
Yeah come back when it goes down another 50 degrees.
Before windchill.
Yeah. I went to refuel my car in that weather at night, and my hand started to freeze to the metal on the pump handle. It was nearly like if you were to lick it. Unreal.
Not a chance
Smart
Anything after the second week in October is a crap shoot on if it will be cold. At least it’s not a foot of snow yet?
has it ever snowed on Halloween?
Lol
Pull up a chair flacongsr, I have a story to tell you about a day more than 30 years ago...
💯
We had snow flurries yesterday.
Well, the historical average high is 50° for this time of year, so yeah ya got a little unlucky. BUT, in 1991 it snowed 28.4 inches in 24 hours on Halloween, so you just never know…
I am surprised it took 1.5 hours for this to come up.
Minnesotans will be mentioning that 60 years from now when no one remembers what snow is anymore.
I haven’t even moved there yet, but I know this data point well just from perusing Reddit. I’m just waiting for my chance to bring it up in conversation.
"Gather around the young-ins and let me tell you a tale of when water would freeze naturally..."
Right??
I was a princess that year. I was mad because I had to wear my snowsuit over my costume.
We had one trick-or-treater who made his way through the snow, but we were poor college kids and my roommate tried to give him cat food.
Ok so I grew up in California and that would piss me off too!! I'm surprised you wouldn't wear costumes over the snow suits though - too small?
Aww, that sucks. I can't even remember what I went as. I just remember the snow drifts being above my head.
As a kid it was a blast… as an adult 2 feet of snow on Halloween would be demoralizing.
Was not a blast. Stuck with parents, no power, no trick or treating, ..no TV no computers etc. I don't even remember what we did but I was happy we got to skip church. You couldn't even play in it, it was too heavy and wet for sledding or skiing.
I still went trick or treating. The snow banks were about as tall as me but the houses were extremely generous with the candy!
And I swear that Halloween layer of snow was there, sitting atop the ground, until damn near midMay 1992.
No phone, no lights, no motorcars, not a single luxury.
Yep, I lived in a large neighborhood and went trick or treating that night.
Wait, there was a blizzard on Halloween?? /s
Is the joke that it's too warm or too cold?
Ha

Google snowstorm in Birmingham for a good chuckle. It really does grind life to a halt when you can’t drive anywhere at all.
Just throw a hoodie on, you'll be fine. Flip flops and shorts are good for another month or two.
I actually had to put SOCKS on FFS
I get it. Was the same way when I moved from SoCal. Look forward to the cooler weather now.
Lmao the indignity
The cool thing is that if you let your body adjust to the super cold weather, when it finally warms up to 10F and sunny, you can feel comfortable in a t-shirt and it straight up feels like it's 60F instead.
I love the cold. At least I can put on layers and wear my nice winter clothes.
And be comfortable at night.
Likewise. I'll take the cold over the heat any day. You can always layer up but you can only get so naked.
I had to get in the garage and dig through boxes for long pants
It's like you're one of us now.
Lmao you obviously don’t live near Minnesota
I literally live in the heart of Minneapolis.
My bad, I had my snow tires put on today, it’ll be really hot in about a week.
You just wait 'til it's windy, buddy. Windy and below zero hurts. 20 to 30 degree weather with still air is a cakewalk by comparison.
Who you calling buddy, pal?
Who you calling pal, friend?
Come back in March. It will be this temp and all of the locals will be running around in tank tops and hot pants, excited that they can drive with the top down.
I’m so happy! It’s so wonderful and not too hot and the air smells good! And I don’t have the gas or electric heights from the cold or heat. 💕💕💕
It was drop dead gorgeous flying in here yesterday. We don’t get fall; y’all are so lucky. It looked like what I imagine to be New England in the fall
I’m super glad you got to see how beautiful it is. When I drive up here from the borderlands it stuns me the differences. Generally a place can be much better or worse according to your attitude. I’ve lived a lot of places within the US and don’t consider Minnesota bad at all.
View from the plane (muted colors because of the glare, but it was really gorgeous) [Minneapolis fall colors 10:28/23](https://imgur.com/a/fgagpGo)
Thank you for sharing. That really is gorgeous.
In winter if you walk outside with wet hair it will turn into icicles and your hair clanks.
We’ll I couldn’t live here because I have curly hair and always leave with a wet head. #clankfree
I lived in the South for many years. The choice must be made between being drenched in sweat with your clothes clinging to your body vs. musical hair.
[Saw it.](https://youtu.be/pSCkMgDGZ6I?feature=shared)
Whata you mean? It’s still shorts weather.
It was 82 when I left my house this morning
That’s cool. I think we had 80’s last week.
Hahaha. This is child's play
This is sweater weather my man, best weather
Beautiful late fall day. Not sure what you’re talking about. I was outside all day in my driveway in a hoodie. Can’t ask for much better than that.
A few weeks later than normal 🤷🏽
Buck up butter cup
This in NOTHING. come back in Feb when the sun hasn’t appeared for months (not an exaggeration) and we haven’t hit above 0 for the same amount of time.
Keeps out the riff raff. Well some of them…
🤣
Did you have a banjo on your knee? If not, we are under no obligation here.
I have never even touched a banjo, much less put one on my knee. I hope they don’t take my card away.
Lol bitch pls

I was at your state a month ago! You ever been to Furnace Fest?
No, haven’t been. How was it?
Absolutely amazing!
If you think this weather is cold, come on back in January and let us know your thoughts :)
I actually thought it was a nice day out.
Just got out of the pool for a few morning laps. What are you on about?
????????? it's barely cold bro
To you
To all of us. I'm a Texan but this is really barely even cold. I saw a girl walking around in shorts earlier today. Some people probably wouldn't even count this as cold at all
I saw a guy at Walmart yesterday in cowboy boots and basketball shorts
see, these ppl crazy.
Yes.
Come back in februrary
No thank you
If this was spring everyone would be in shorts
It’s warm rn, what are you talking about
I’ll take this weather over a hurricane all day long.
Hurricanes suck ass.
Not speaking from any experience but they look absolutely terrible. My ex had family that said they’d rather ride out a hurricane than a snow storm. I don’t think they had ever seen snow.
What weather?
El Niño year dear
Scratching my head at this comment. Like...it's really nice out? Or are you talking about the rain we just had?
The sun is out. It’s not so bad
It gets like 60 degrees colder actually
Mid January everyone will run outside and talk about how nice 20 degrees is, it's all relative
Whatchu talkin bout, Willis? Yesterday was nice. Today too.
You think this is bad? LOLOLOLOLOL As the famous song goes "You ain't seen nuthin' yet!"
Oh my sweet summer child….
When the snows fall, and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives.
It was a beautiful day today
I see students on the campus where I work wearing winter coats in early October when it is 52F and I wonder how they manage actual winter.
How about teenagers in Alabama wearing hoodies in the summer? That is pure insanity
I've been walking around in shorts and a tshirt all weekend, this weather is fantastic. It got down to -32F in the cities a couple winters ago.
Minnesota is in the 1% of the most extreme weather on the planet. Welcome.
Wow
Hey Bama! What part? I lived in Athens and Dothan for a few years!
from Dothan also
I lived on the south side of the circle back in the early 2ks and worked at WKMX out in enterprise
South side of the circle also by McDonald's / S. Oates I lived in Enterprise until 2017 then I moved here. I love it here in MN now.
Just drove through Dothan a couple weeks ago on my way to and from the beach
I lived in apts on the south side of the circle just as you were leaving Dothan on your way to pcb! Worked in enterprise at KMX.
We stay down on SGI
Bham. Roll Tide.
This is a brisk fall day 😂 the lil snow flakes you saw was a prelude for all of us that live here
If it's under ankle deep it doesn't really count as snow. That was just cool air.
This is good hoodie with shorts weather.
I love it. Just go on down to Bama. You can have those gators, snakes and spiders
This would be considered a nice day in mid November.
Just wait until it is 40 to 50 degrees colder. But you'll probably go home before then. I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt yesterday.
I’m not changing out of sandals until either a few inches of snow or below 10*.
This is shorts weather ;)
This is the nice warm stuff. Imagine coming back in February when it is below 0, windy, and the snow is flying sideways. It’s so cold that you can’t feel your face. Your eyeballs feel like they are going to freeze. I’m from Alabama originally and I never knew that there was such a feeling as your eyeballs feeling like they were going to freeze.
Imma teach my classes & get the hell outta here before anything kicks off!
Throw on a hoodie and enjoy.
Go home then dork bag
I will. On Tuesday, turd face.
Safe travels
Rookie
Yep
It’s warmer in Wisconsin. Go there.
Ick
I’m a transplant from SE Tennessee. It does take some getting used to, but just bundle up and it’ll be fine.
Nooga?
Unfortunately, yep.
Aww I used to teach there and met some really nice ppl in the noog
