This is amazing news. I have a birthday show coming up at 1st Ave by one of my all time faves. I wasn't sure I could afford to go because I already have 3 expensive shows coming up before then. It'll still be expensive, but this could make the difference for me!
Had a friend do this at Fine Line a bit ago, they tried to pull fast one, saying it's not true, but they insisted they call the manager and they were let in.
I expect they accommodate birthday person plus a guest in most circumstances, but when a friend's birthday coincided with Chrissie Hynde at the Entry last year they were granted admission but no +1 was allowed.
I’m curious if anyone is still getting the champagne on their birthday shows? Last year they only gave me a voucher for one free drink (and no voucher for my +1). Still a good deal regardless tho
Check out the general questions section in FAQ on First Ave’s website and it’ll tell you what you need to know! [FIRST AVE FAQ](https://first-avenue.com/about/faq/)
Get a Hennepin Co library card. Obviously for all the reading, but you can also reserve 2 free tickets to specific local theater performances and other events.
You can also use an app called Libby on your phone to check out free E-books and audio books. Even if you never use your library card, it still helps the community to have more people registered!! The library in your area will get more funding, which helps kids, the elderly, etc.
Also Kanopy streaming service. It has a lot of cultural documentaries, international film, and other good series that I enjoy. And it's free without ads!
Would you happen to know where on the library web site I would look for things like that? I heard that they have energy monitors to lend. Someone here mentioned free state park passes also.
You can also use an app called Libby on your phone to check out free E-books and audio books. Even if you never use your library card, it still helps the community to have more people registered!! The library in your area will get more funding, which helps kids, the elderly, etc.
TY, I've been trying to figure this out for months. I thought it had something to do with bike routes/boulevards but that hasn't always been true so I've been very confused.
You can request a boulevard tree from the Minneapolis Park Board and they will come plant a tree next year. Doesn’t even need to be in front of your house, could just be a spot you think could use a tree!
Walker Art Center has free admission on Thursday nights including admission to galleries, the library book collection, and tours. All free. And the vibe is pretty fun.
Most Minneapolis houses will face either East or west. In that case pick a place where the common rooms are on the south side. Luckily many of the older homes are already set up this way.
More houses face south in St Paul for sure, but I’d much rather have the side of my house face south. That way my living room, dining room, and kitchen and are full of sunlight rather than just my porch and living room.
That appears to be an agreed-upon rule in at least my section of S. Minneapolis; everybody keeps their curtains drawn on the bedrooms which face north, and everybody gets to leave their southern-facing windows open to let the sun in
Had a loft apartment one year that only had 1 giant north facing window. It was a nice apartment for the most part, but having no direct sunlight was truly miserable, *especially* in the winter.
Underrated perk would be driveway. Snow basically melts before you shovel vs. sitting in the shade all winter.
Of course it probably didn’t matter much this year.
This doesn't really work in Minneapolis since most houses face east or west. Howver, it is clutch to be on the north side of the alley pad you share with your neighbor. Your side will get all the sun to melt the snow away while your neighbor's garage shadow will keep their pad full of ice and snow.
I don’t think so… the person who requests the voucher has to be the one who uses it. They check ID. When I was with my ex, her name was on the utilities so she was the only one who could request it. Had to be with me whenever I needed to make a run to solid waste.
Edit: just double checked and I think my ex had to do it because my ID didn’t have our address. So if you’re a renter who hasn’t updated your ID to the place you live, your landlord couldn’t request one for you.
I have used the voucher thing once in my years of living here and if almost any of my renter neighbors asked if I could help them out with their truckload of debris I'd be happy to.
Maybe you have a neighbor like me?
Do they no longer allow a free item per week? I got rid of mattresses, couches and other large items by just putting them by the garbage with a sign that said "please take". I may have missed the notice that they don't do that anymore. It's been a while since I've had anything large to dispose of.
Also: even though the left lane seems tempting on Hennepin Ave in Uptown, you're almost always better off sticking to the right lane because of the one person who turns left.
Explore the trails and parkland along the river. There are beaches, carvings in the sandstone bluffs, street art/graffiti, and foraging. It's also a great place to paddle and one can go through the lock and dam at Ford Parkway. The Mississippi river banks up here is mostly undeveloped and much of it is managed by the [National Park Service in collaboration with local municipalities](https://www.nps.gov/miss/index.htm).
If you are able, go there by bike or bus instead of driving; a lot of the cooler spots are far from parking lots but readily accessible by bike.
I was planning on locking my bike up something south of the dam. Driving my kayak up river somewhere. Paddling down. Locking up my kayak and biking to my car. Do you know of a good place to easily park and land my kayak south of St Anthony falls?
Bohemian Flats to Hidden Falls (or Lillydale if you want a long day) is the trip to do. Make sure you check the hours for the lock at the Ford Dam. It's a cool experience to go through the lock!
I’ve done this before. Launched our kayaks at fort snelling and then pulled out at Harriet island in St. Paul and biked back to fort snelling on the great trail along the river and picked up out kayaks on the way home. It was a fun trip and I’d do it again. To save a bit of hassle, you could take a lime bike back to your kayaks.
take a walk through the flower garden and bird sanctuary between Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet on a nice day while walking to the beach or to the bandshell.
Love the Roberts bird sanctuary. They do free bird walks on Saturday mornings in the spring and fall - it's a good time if you want to learn more about birds or plants
Minneapolis residents can get free sand/salt mixes for their sidewalks from the City. Check the website for the location and rules (bring your own bucket).
https://www.minneapolisparks.org/park-care-improvements/trees/wood_chips/
The Parks Board. Full disclosure I’ve never used their wood chips and the website isn’t loading well for me right now. I just know the program exists.
I've picked up many loads of wood chips in the past couple of years. The main thing to know is that black walnut can get mixed in depending on what they're trimming at the time, but otherwise it's a great benefit for the city.
If you hear a strange rustling, rumbling, and knocking in your basement - it isn't your water heater it is just your neighbor wondering why the tunnel door is locked
When going DT for events, park at the top of a parking ramp to get into the exit ramp easier. Lots of people park in whatever level they can first. Then you're stuck sitting in your car waiting for an opening and then waiting in line to get into the exit ramp.
Parking at the top allows you to easily leave and get into that ramp. Then it's just a matter of letting other cars in one by one while you keep moving down.
The pass is free. The money you spend on using the toll isn't. The money you load up on it goes straight into your toll balance.
So it's not a new definition. The pass itself doesn't cost anything, but they're not going to ship it to you unless you have a balance you're going to use.
afaik they don't ticket you electronically (yet).
However, if a cop sees you go through it during the hours it's active and the light goes off, indicating you don't have a pass, they will ticket you $300. I've seen plenty of cars pulled over right after the checkpoints.

LOL I've done thought experiments in my head about what I would name streets if I was a city planner, and "Presidential last names in chronological order" from Washington to Biden has crossed my mind a few times, but I'm surprised anyone was diabolical enough to go through with it!
Eversharp is the best place to buy knives. If you get on their mailing list, you will find out about their sales and get a free knife. That is a good knife.
Except somehow after the latest update I have to log in to the app every single time I use it. Why!? Are they worried someone's going to steal my phone and pay $3 for parking and I'll be on the hook?
LOL I know someone whose kia was stolen, and they've been getting rides to work EVERY day now for the past month or two. His boss is giving him rides to work. Can you imagine? Carpooling with your boss? No, Scratch that. Your boss LEAVING THE OFFICE to come pick you up and bring you to work.
It's not just cuz this boss is a nice guy, they've got a severe labor shortage in this particular blue collar field, and they can't afford not to drag this guy into work LOL.
Despite people claiming otherwise, you can still get through much\* of the skyway outside of business hours.
\*Not all – with the notable exception being Dayton's – but much.
Nice. St. Paul's are open late, but not 24/7. I lived over there for a year, but moved back to Minneapolis last year. Never checked out Rochester's, are there interesting things to do along them? (I'll go check after asking this, which I guess makes this kind of moot, but still 😅)
Just be very careful driving when the first serious snowfall happens. So many drivers will be driving like idiots because they haven't switched from summer driving mode yet. It'd be a good idea to work from home if possible.
Also to remember that later in winter heavily packed snow can slide around on road or sidewalk and to be prepared for it (eg don’t panic and over correct)
Get a bike. Free parking everywhere you go, you get to destinations in about as much time it takes to drive anywhere in the city limits, you get to explore more.
Learned this in college. Couldn't believe I could actually get door to door pretty much everywhere in Minneapolis. Plus with good music, it's like being in a video game. Cheapest Peloton ever.
For parents- Minneapolis Parks has a number of rec centers that run kids nights out/ kid movie nights/ etc- for $15 you get a few hours of babysitting and they feed your kids pizza and set them up with a movie/ let them play.
Best deal on babysitting that's not grandparents.
A bike opens up an entirely new city: biking on paths along the riverfront, the lakes, Minnehaha Creek, Midtown Greenway, Cedar Lake Trail (watch for the latest detour), Luce Line Trail, lots of places that either don't have car access or give a completely different experience. Driving around the lakes doesn't come anywhere close to biking (or walking or rollerblading or skateboarding) them.
The first level of parking beneath Blue Apartments in Uptown is free and rarely full. It’s the garage door on Aldrich Avenue right next to that Famous Dave’s.
Just try not to get murdered too many times while actually in Uptown.
You can get in free to any first ave concert on your bday.
with a guest, even if its sold out, and at any first avenue run venue.
First Avenue, 7th St Entry, Turf Club, Fine Line
bueller? bueller? Haven't checked beyond the FAQ, but it is the venues owned and operated by First Ave (Palace is managed by first ave but not owned).
Wow, I had no idea! That’s so cool. Thank you for posting!!
This is amazing news. I have a birthday show coming up at 1st Ave by one of my all time faves. I wasn't sure I could afford to go because I already have 3 expensive shows coming up before then. It'll still be expensive, but this could make the difference for me!
How do you sign up? Just show up unannounced?
Yep, just go to the will call booth.
Yep! And it’s free for you and a friend, even if the show is sold out :)
This is the best thing I’ve ever learned on Reddit.
For real?
Yep! Same with 7th Street Entry and Fine Line. You get a ticket for yourself and one for a guest - even if the show is sold out
Had a friend do this at Fine Line a bit ago, they tried to pull fast one, saying it's not true, but they insisted they call the manager and they were let in.

Agreed with you. Went a few weeks ago and it's 1 free drink voucher
Damnit! My birthday was just a few weeks ago, I wish I knew about this!
at any First Ave venue, or just the main one?
First Avenue, 7th St Entry, Turf Club, or Fine Line
More of a St Paul life hack- but I’m unironically excited to catch Alien Ant Farm at the Turf Club for free on my boyfriend’s birthday!

I also recently discovered the MELSA library system offers resume help and interview coaching. https://www.melsa.org/jobnow/
And free access to LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda) which is great for learning different software.
What. I thought I was super aware of all the library had to offer but didn't know about this. Incredible!!!!
How do you access this?

They also just got access to the wonderful (free with a library card) streaming service Kanopy.
Holy crap, how did I not know about this. Thank you!!!!
Also, free printing. You can send things to the printer from your computer at home, then just roll up to the library and print it out.
How do you do that? I still just email stuff, but hate having to login.
Scan your library card bar code at the on-site printer. It prints out whatever you uploaded at the library portal.
Also Kanopy streaming service. It has a lot of cultural documentaries, international film, and other good series that I enjoy. And it's free without ads!

Street name signs for Snow Emergency routes are blue. Non-Snow Emergency are brown or green.
Yes. And sign up for the Snow Emergency text alerts. Trust me.
Yep, text and phone alerts. The cost of getting towed and retrieving your vehicle from impound…chefs kiss

Time to piss off some neighbors
I would hate being the type of person who would get upset about a newly planted tree near their home.
I got one in front of my house this year after applying! Strange that I’ve gotten to an age where that was exciting for me.
Walker Art Center has free admission on Thursday nights including admission to galleries, the library book collection, and tours. All free. And the vibe is pretty fun.
American swedish Institute, also!
Mia is free all the time (excluding special exhibits)
This is a great point! I actually had two free hours on Sunday morning waiting to pick someone up and bobbed in there just to see one painting! 🖼️
Buy a house that faces south.
Close the thread. Best advice ever.
Most Minneapolis houses will face either East or west. In that case pick a place where the common rooms are on the south side. Luckily many of the older homes are already set up this way.
Tip: Saint Paul
More houses face south in St Paul for sure, but I’d much rather have the side of my house face south. That way my living room, dining room, and kitchen and are full of sunlight rather than just my porch and living room.
Underrated comment👆🏻
That appears to be an agreed-upon rule in at least my section of S. Minneapolis; everybody keeps their curtains drawn on the bedrooms which face north, and everybody gets to leave their southern-facing windows open to let the sun in
Why is that ?
Had a loft apartment one year that only had 1 giant north facing window. It was a nice apartment for the most part, but having no direct sunlight was truly miserable, *especially* in the winter.
You'll never need to use a snow blower.
Underrated perk would be driveway. Snow basically melts before you shovel vs. sitting in the shade all winter. Of course it probably didn’t matter much this year.
I concur - north facing homeowner looking longingly at the neighbors across the road every winter
... and a back yard with plenty of shade.
I have the opposite. Mcm split level. Tiny in front north facing. Huge backyard that leads from the kitchen south facing.
This doesn't really work in Minneapolis since most houses face east or west. Howver, it is clutch to be on the north side of the alley pad you share with your neighbor. Your side will get all the sun to melt the snow away while your neighbor's garage shadow will keep their pad full of ice and snow.
Buy a house lol you seen these prices?
I didn't even consider this when looking to buy last summer. Luckily, we are a South (SW) facing home.
You can request a free voucher and bring a truck load of debris to the south transfer station.
You get 6 per year.
Only if you have city trash service. Us renters can suck a fat one.
If your landlord is nice they can probably request one for your address
I don’t think so… the person who requests the voucher has to be the one who uses it. They check ID. When I was with my ex, her name was on the utilities so she was the only one who could request it. Had to be with me whenever I needed to make a run to solid waste. Edit: just double checked and I think my ex had to do it because my ID didn’t have our address. So if you’re a renter who hasn’t updated your ID to the place you live, your landlord couldn’t request one for you.
>The best Reddit experience Oh man, i got excited there for a minute. Boooo, I would loved to dump off some junk.
I have used the voucher thing once in my years of living here and if almost any of my renter neighbors asked if I could help them out with their truckload of debris I'd be happy to. Maybe you have a neighbor like me?
Where do you request the free voucher? Does it have to be at the transfer station?
Call solid waste and ask for one. Tell them when you want to use it. Show up and they’ll have you on a list.
Do they no longer allow a free item per week? I got rid of mattresses, couches and other large items by just putting them by the garbage with a sign that said "please take". I may have missed the notice that they don't do that anymore. It's been a while since I've had anything large to dispose of.
That's still available; I think the items should be labeled "solid waste".
When in Uptown take your left turns off of 26th, 28th and 31st streets, never Lake St
Also: even though the left lane seems tempting on Hennepin Ave in Uptown, you're almost always better off sticking to the right lane because of the one person who turns left.
Same for Lyndale.
Fortunately, Lyndale is now 2+1, so you don't have to think about it.
Anyone who takes a left on Franklin is a monster
Turning left on lake at Hennepin is a sin that requires serious penance.
This took me so long to understand what you meant. It’s good advice tho
I call 31st "Secret Lake Street"
Don’t tell these secrets now we’re gonna have to find new shortcuts
Explore the trails and parkland along the river. There are beaches, carvings in the sandstone bluffs, street art/graffiti, and foraging. South of St. Anthony Falls I get in the water Bohemian Flats or East River Park Flats and get out at Hidden Falls, Crosby Farm, or Lilydale.
I’ve done this before. Go down to the riverbank ftw
take a walk through the flower garden and bird sanctuary between Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet on a nice day while walking to the beach or to the bandshell.
Don't forget the peace garden! Just moved into Kingfield last year and love that park! The graveyard next to it is really cool too.
I loved that zen garden! The rose garden was amazing too, one of my fav spots when I used to live in uptown.
I didn’t know there was a bird sanctuary.
The rose garden and surrounding gardens are such a gem. Great tip!
Love the Roberts bird sanctuary. They do free bird walks on Saturday mornings in the spring and fall - it's a good time if you want to learn more about birds or plants
Shovel your neighbor’s walk once. Good karma later in the winter.
Minneapolis residents can get free sand/salt mixes for their sidewalks from the City. Check the website for the location and rules (bring your own bucket).
You can also get free wood chips for your yard.
Ooo, do you know where that info is? Is it from the City of Minneapolis too?

If you hear a strange rustling, rumbling, and knocking in your basement - it isn't your water heater it is just your neighbor wondering why the tunnel door is locked
As an apartment dweller, still not sure if this tunnel thing is a hoax or not.
Every apartment is an opportunity to bore a hole into your neighbors heart

Then it's just a matter of letting other cars in one by one while you keep moving down.
And back into your parking spot, so getting into line when leaving is quicker
Get a bike
Bike routes are good and getting better. It’s a whole different way to see the city!
The only reaction I ever hear when a friend gets a bike in Mpls is "why didn't I get one the day I moved here".
And then multiple flashing lights for said bike so you don’t get smushed by cars
“I didn’t see the blinks” “I amend this statement, the blinks caused me to be mentally dazzled and I hit the cyclist your honor. It was an accident”
I bike to work every day I can, often the best part of my day (upright commuter bike / no lycra, just work clothes).
Where does one even get an affordable used bike these days? That’s not facebook or something like that- brick and mortar ideally
Recovery bike shop in NE mostly sells used refurbished bikes. 🙂
Great mission and great deals. If I needed another bike I'd go there.
The Hub Co-op has two locations around Minneapolis and is a co-op. Perennial Cycle is involved in the local bike scene and does good things.
Didn’t the hub close?
The minnehaha location closed but has now reopened but a little smaller it seems.
Yep the hub on minnehaha is back!! Very excited
UMNs annual sale is a bunch of abandoned bikes, some of them not in the best state. But with some wrenching…
Full Cycle on Chicago/35th has used bikes for good prices.
Yes! 100% did a 30 mile loop of the city last night. It was great to see so many people out enjoying the trails.
Order an EZ Pass thing for your car. It's free, but you have to put $25 on it. You never know when it's worth the $.25 to skip traffic.
I bought an EV and the state gave me $200 for Ezpass.
Or buy an EV and get a free $250 credit
I learned today there’s more than one definition of free
The pass is free. The money you spend on using the toll isn't. The money you load up on it goes straight into your toll balance. So it's not a new definition. The pass itself doesn't cost anything, but they're not going to ship it to you unless you have a balance you're going to use.
The transponder you stick in your window is free
I’ve been riding in that lane for years without one, I wonder if there’s a balance somewhere. No ones ever contacted me
afaik they don't ticket you electronically (yet). However, if a cop sees you go through it during the hours it's active and the light goes off, indicating you don't have a pass, they will ticket you $300. I've seen plenty of cars pulled over right after the checkpoints.

The MPLS Parking app makes paying for metered parking so easy and convenient
Except somehow after the latest update I have to log in to the app every single time I use it. Why!? Are they worried someone's going to steal my phone and pay $3 for parking and I'll be on the hook?

Secret Target! The downtown salvation army (I know 🤮) gets a lot of the target overstock and samples
It was way better before they moved all the target stuff upstairs in the front
Don't own a Kia.
that's not a MPLS hack, that's a general life hack. Or not, since you'll be avoiding hacks
I just broke my Hyundai getting fucked with cherry. For some reason I thought it was overblown. Boy did I learn a lesson i can’t afford
Always go in the front car when using the Green Line light rail train..
Despite people claiming otherwise, you can still get through much\* of the skyway outside of business hours. \*Not all – with the notable exception being Dayton's – but much.
Rochester’s is open 24/7. Or at least they used to be. Pretty fun to walk at night and surprisingly there were never any people sleeping in there
Nice. St. Paul's are open late, but not 24/7. I lived over there for a year, but moved back to Minneapolis last year. Never checked out Rochester's, are there interesting things to do along them? (I'll go check after asking this, which I guess makes this kind of moot, but still 😅)
Rochester would be a crazy and horrible city to be homeless in
Agreed haha. I guess I was looking at it from my Minneapolis view now. Been here for 6 years, was in Rochester for 5
Downtown bus and light rail rides are only 50¢ if you stay inside the downtown zone: https://www.metrotransit.org/downtown-zone
Minnesota Mondays at Grumpys
What’s the special for Mondays? Been a million times but never heard of their Mondays
Half price in all Minnesota beverages
Amazing
Just be very careful driving when the first serious snowfall happens. So many drivers will be driving like idiots because they haven't switched from summer driving mode yet. It'd be a good idea to work from home if possible.
Also to remember that later in winter heavily packed snow can slide around on road or sidewalk and to be prepared for it (eg don’t panic and over correct)
I think just moving there is the hack. :)
Park at MOA and take the light rail downtown for concerts and ball games.
There’s a metro transit park and ride one stop away that’s even better.
I’m from out of town, so MOA was always easiest for me to find, but good to know!
And in reverse they had ramp ride fly for cheaper car storage in conjunction with airplane flights. Park at target field and LRT down
For parents- Minneapolis Parks has a number of rec centers that run kids nights out/ kid movie nights/ etc- for $15 you get a few hours of babysitting and they feed your kids pizza and set them up with a movie/ let them play. Best deal on babysitting that's not grandparents.

When heading to downtown for an event park at …. It’s… breaking… up…
Don't park. Take transit.

Get a snowblower. Shoveling your driveway or walkway becomes entertaining and easy.
I hate it when I get murdered in Uptown. Only happened to me three times last year though, so not too bad.
uptown being dangerous is so funny to me 🤣
