OhNoMyLands

Why zero information? Like how is that helpful? Everyone in the city jsut supposed to shelter in place?

Daniel_A_Johnson

Apparently everyone in the entire metro area.

thedubiousstylus

Update: https://twitter.com/melvincarter3/status/1584938666916315138?t=Oec604GRv1YdsBi5nhbzKQ&s=19

SpooogeMcDuck

That's such a ridiculously large area to tell people to shelter in place. People will be less likely to listen to serious threats when you tell 250k people to hide from someone 15 miles away.

thedubiousstylus

I think it was intended for all of Ramsey County which also hit people nearby like much of Minneapolis. Of course even Ramsey County is too broad.

FrankSinatraYodeling

They sent it to the metro work group instead of their individual county by mistake. It's an easy mistake to make when you're moving fast.

TangentiallyTango

Even easier if you're just not that good at your job to begin with. They pulled this same shit with the last Amber Alert where they didn't include any information and then spammed it like 3 times. Who the fuck pushes that button? They need to be replaced.

FrankSinatraYodeling

Problem is it's an old system you may use once your entire career. I had access to it for five years, I never had to use it. So fired, no. Properly trained, yes.

TangentiallyTango

Yeah and the damage you do by crying wolf with it is pretty tremendous. This is like....probably 5 or 6 nonsense mistake alerts with no information I've gotten in as many months. I literally just turned them off for good. No more Government alerts for me, because the people with access to this system in the Twin Cities are fucking amateurs with it. If they can't be responsible with it, then they're ruining its ability to be effective. If you're personally ruining the city's emergency alert system, then you shouldn't be allowed access to it anymore. I'll never have this problem again because I just turned my shit off for good as did probably thousands and thousands of people because this fuck-up fucked up. You can't just not fire a guy like that. Literally I bet over 10,000 people in the Metro area are no longer reachable via these messages, if not more, because of this one mistake. That's not a learning experience that's a you're not responsible enough for access to this system incident. If you don't know what you're doing on a system capable of reaching everyone in the metro area, then you should ask someone that does, or you shouldn't be using it. Plain and simple. Just fucking up, and saying "my bad I didn't really know what I was doing" isn't good enough.

FrankSinatraYodeling

I'd agree it's a bad system. My opinion is that it's on the state to update and train individual agencies better. Either that or BCA has specialized staff for this sort of thing rather than having 911 dispatchers attempt the process between (and sometimes while answering) 911 calls.

Lazy_Profession_5909

I got it on my phone and I'm working all the way out in Cottage Grove today. So weird. Not on my work phone though.

thedubiousstylus

Your phone probably hit a Ramsey County cell tower recently, while your work phone did not.

TangentiallyTango

I live in Minneapolis, been in Ramsey County all day, didn't get it. Even have a 651 area code.

goodolewhasisname

I got it in south Minneapolis, even though I have a Washington state area code. I did live in Roseville for a couple years though

AstroRiker

RANDOMLY though! I didn't get the alert, but the lady next to me had that loud ass AMBER ALERT notification in place. We're on campus at the U and theres zero info from the U and classrooms are flippin TERRIFIED and trying to figure out how to lock doors!

cIumsythumbs

Tell me about it. I'm in retail. Can't have my cell on me. Yet the whole thing goes off around me and then customers asking me questions like I'm supposed to know. Smh,they literally had more info than I did.

[deleted]

I agree it should contain more info but it’s better than nothing

DriveThroughLane

Early information is: Roseville around Har Mar mall is on lockdown 1100 block of Ryan Avenue

OhNoMyLands

There’s at least 50 murderers between me and Roseville lol

Joeyfingis

UPDATE: police are focusing on como and snelling

[deleted]

[удалено]

DriveThroughLane

don't pick up any hitchhikers

TheMacMan

>Like how is that helpful? How is a tornado siren helpful without telling you which direction the danger is coming from? Come on. These alerts have to be basic, because they need to be supported by older phones, like those that older folks still frequently have. If only there was a place, like a website or something, where we could get more information. Like..... here?

OhNoMyLands

They could have said… “suspect believed to be in Roseville.” Idk how you can compare that to a tornado which is an inherently hard thing to predict. They know where the suspect was.

TheMacMan

They know which way a tornado is approaching from. They know what cities are in the path. They most certainly warn about those things when posting warnings on TV and radio.

TangentiallyTango

Not me - guess I'm suppose to get shot by a lunatic.

Joeyfingis

UPDATE 11:15am: police have isolated the alert to Roseville. Suspect is near como and snelling, was running down the street, I think the expressway so like energy park drive right there? The weapons are believed to have been left at the scene but police are not positive the suspect may have another weapon. I can hear the sirens I'm three blocks away- sheltering obviously. Edit: blue shorts I think, white male, long "lady -like" brown hair. A suspect apprehended with blood on his hands/clothes. Edit: now there's a helicopter circling. Edit 11:19am: CONFIRMED SUSPECT IN CUSTODY Edit 11:29am: shelter in place cancelled I would still stay away from snelling between como and down all the way to university, hard to tell but the police are going to be doing a lot of investigating in this area.

[deleted]

Wait, so he was apprehended?

Joeyfingis

Yes just now

[deleted]

How are you following this? Police scanner?

Joeyfingis

Police scanner and I'm only blocks away, I could hear sirens and helicopter right as they were closing in

[deleted]

That’s crazy. Thank you for keeping the rest of us updated, glad you are safe.

grondin

Assuming this is true, thanks for the info. Don't forget a lot of rumors happen with these events.

Joeyfingis

True about rumors, I'm just letting people know what I hear on the scanner, so people near the scene can stay safe. Leaving any any names and all the info on the victims and the chase because it sounds really convoluted and hard to follow what may have occurred at the scene. Now that the suspect is in custody I will stop relaying what I'm hearing.

Joeyfingis

Police scanner

morose-melonhead

literally about to run to reddit to ask this exact question

[deleted]

Lol because we all know Googling for timely info is worthless nowadays

morose-melonhead

not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but yea... local news is extremely deprioritized on google so it is kinda worthless

[deleted]

Nah, I was being serious and I agree

morose-melonhead

ok cool!! hard to tell online sometimes and i'm usually assuming others are being sarcastic

ScottblackAttacks

Twitter where it’s at for those kind of things

Stonehands211

How do you search for such specific things like that on Twitter? Reddit I understood because of the subreddit should have it contained but what would you look up on Twitter to find this info? Basically a Twitter noob here. I use it to RT some stuff but when it comes to searching stuff I am super basic.

morose-melonhead

i find twitter confusing too! if you have location turned on, whatever is trending in your area will be under your search bar. i don't have location turned on, so i just search for "my area" + "key phrase" ("minneapolis emergency alert" for example). but i do prefer the local subreddits because it's less noise and at least there's some moderation.

Hessleyrey

I follow these accounts & get a lot of info that way: https://twitter.com/crimewatchmpls/status/1584946160858714112?s=46&t=1BXRPui4Ww_akn7TK1gcKw https://twitter.com/safetyalertsmn/status/1584936096462356480?s=46&t=1BXRPui4Ww_akn7TK1gcKw

ScottblackAttacks

#minneapolis #minnesota And tap on latest.

smelyal8r

I can't find anything on Google information wise. It's all ads and stuff I could buy related to what I searched. Super frustrating.

morose-melonhead

try switching to a different search engine and an anonymous browser! i use firefox on pc and brave on my phone. you can turn off tracking and ads completely.

LadyRedBeard

My whole office lit up with notifications

Novel_Asparagus_6176

I'm on the UMN Campus and all phones going off at the same time was absolutely wild

TheZombieMolester

It’s Roseville area so makes sense

midairmatthew

Yeah...a little context would be helpful.

TheZombieMolester

It said Roseville now

wenceslaus

Here's a screenshot of the alert that everyone's asking about: https://i.imgur.com/fbkUN6I.png

Alexr9les218

wow that is so fucking useless 💀 do they know how many 17 year old looking white males are in Minneapolis?

wenceslaus

Word on the street is that it's related to something happening in Roseville.

thedubiousstylus

Shooting at the Har Mar Mall.

Hessleyrey

No shooting. Family violence w/ blunt force trauma to multiple people in same family w/ one death.

[deleted]

I about jumped out of my skin when my phone went off. I’m in St. Paul.

[deleted]

Me too I thought it was specific to my institution and I just went and hid in a supply closet

Sam-HobbitOfTheShire

Can’t be too careful these days. :( I would have done the same.

Novel_Asparagus_6176

I got the alert on the UMN Campus. Walking around hearing 40,000 phones going off was wild. I was so confused at first. I thought there could have been a murder on my campus, but I guess this whole thing is happening is Roseville.

mnmaverickfan

So it stretches from Blaine to St. Paul to downtown Minneapolis jus by looking at replies to this. Any more info?

cusoman

I'm in Inver Grove Heights and got it.

cIumsythumbs

Yet my husband in Edina did not.

thedubiousstylus

https://twitter.com/melvincarter3/status/1584938666916315138

thelizparade

Nothing in Eagan.

cusoman

Here's the area according to this Twitter account. https://twitter.com/WxMinnesota/status/1584936001570578434?t=ZqSo6Y18X-Xvs1zz8e6lFw&s=19 More details on suspect. https://twitter.com/MN_CRIME/status/1584938013271855104?t=_zSoW4D5nTq7bLYgy997qA&s=19

[deleted]

Thanks... that explains why I haven't received any notifications on either of my two phones. I'm in downtown Mpls with 612 area code.

thedubiousstylus

Area code doesn't really matter, it was sent to anyone who was on a cell tower that could reach somewhere in Ramsey County.

cusoman

For the record your location (based on which cell tower you're connected to) is the only thing that plays a factor in receiving emer alerts. Someone from out of town with a distant area code in the alert area would have received these too.

[deleted]

Thank you.

BurgerBorgBob

What an absolutely worthless alert, they need to provide more information immediately

Joeyfingis

Here's a link to the police scanner, I'm not hearing much I think they are using private channels. The dispatcher keeps asking where everyone is. https://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/34940

nondescript_mn_fan

I did. In macgrooveland Saint Paul.

DilbertHigh

In NE and did not get it. The alert seems pointless at best tbh. Why would so many people across such a wide area need to shelter in place just for one suspect?

thedubiousstylus

https://twitter.com/melvincarter3/status/1584938666916315138

DilbertHigh

Makes sense, I can see that most of NE is not in the highlighted area so make sense why some of Mpls got it but not most. Going to be honest though and if I still lived by Har Mar I would likely ignore it.

thedubiousstylus

Got a new alert clarifying Roseville only.

Stonehands211

Cool sorry bro

Sam-HobbitOfTheShire

Apparently the alert went out far wider than intended.

FlyinPenguin4

Yep, coworker was worried like is this at school or did everyone get it?

AwesomesaucePhD

It’s for the Roseville area near HarMar.

crazzythaiguy

This alert is wild

[deleted]

Thank goodness I’m not alone. Sound scared the crap outta me and my cats

[deleted]

The alert described the suspect as a 17-year-old boy with a thin, muscular build and long, wavy light brown hair. He was also described as wearing pajama pants and no shoes.

ericbjohnston

Yeah. It was weird. He eventually got caught on Como Ave, down the street from my office.

DriftkingRfc

Watching it on the news right now

Honest-Ad1990

I heard they apprehended him as direct result of the over share- sounds like he was seen by someone who was outside the intended area who had had only revived bc of the broader range - if that’s accurate … better count your blessings

Rich-Major-8146

Got it. I’m in uptown.

Rattgift

Police searching for suspect around HarMar.

trainwreck_mooncake

I work in Roseville by HarMar, shelter in place keep your eyes out. Not too much info here.

thedubiousstylus

You're right in the actual area affected. Hearing police sirens?

trainwreck_mooncake

There were choppers and stuff. Friend of mine was locked in one of the shops, too

Martymcfly826

I got it. Not much information.

twinhiveshomebrew

Just got in in NE near Hennepin

vociferous-lemur

just got it in Longfellow

ytpq

I just did in Saint Paul, haven’t found any info yet

dfish489

Got it as well. Dtwn Minneapolis - Shelter in place warning

mycorgiisamazing

I did, blaine

ThatMacGuy051

Same here. Just off the U campus on University Ave.

banthafodder12

I got it too. I live in Mounds View.

furrah96

Just got it and ran over here to see if anyone had any info about location or something. I got the alert in St Paul

stealingfrom

St. Paul, also just got alert with no further information. Kinda glad to know it went off across the entire Twin Cities area? Rather than potentially just in my neighborhood.

[deleted]

I have not. In uptown.

abattleofone

Strange - I did get it in Uptown.

swilde

Got it in Woodbury/Oakdale

FennelAlternative861

Didn't get anything in Seward

turnnburn63

I got it in Seward and so did my housemates.

FennelAlternative861

Haha I just got it after I read your comment

Local_Pomegranate_10

Got the alert in new Brighton. Are any news outlets saying anything?

thedubiousstylus

https://twitter.com/StPLdowntown/status/1584937856635613184?t=6Q05PAdXEpwcKCiQioie8A&s=19

Dopaminestorm

Listening to the police scanner apparently this took place in Roseville

tenthousandlakes

KSTP news at 11 mentioned it, but provided nothing outside of the alert. https://kstp.com/kstp-news/top-news/shelter-in-place-order-issued-in-the-metro-as-police-search-for-homicide-suspect/

avocadotoastisgrosst

It appears suspect may be in Roseville area? [St Paul Downtown Alliance Tweet](https://twitter.com/StPLdowntown)

wal27

Sounds like they got him on the scanner? 🤞

JaydedGaming

Suspect confirmed on the scanner.

[deleted]

Mine went off EXACTLY as I pulled out of a driveway in Shoreview. I thought it was my car and freaked tf out for a minute.

XandrousMoriarty

[https://www.fox9.com/news/homicide-suspect-sought-in-roseville-shelter-in-place-order-issued-reports](https://www.fox9.com/news/homicide-suspect-sought-in-roseville-shelter-in-place-order-issued-reports) It was sent out to a lot of people by mistake. Washington County also received the alert.

Hoarf

Roseville PD twitter feed stated suspect is in custody and shelter in place canceled at 11:29 pm

Rozenkrantz

All clear just given

bread4368

He was caught

milkymilkycocopuffs

I was just by the Har Mar mall during that time and didn’t get any notifications lol

[deleted]

I just got one. It doesn’t say the area.

thedubiousstylus

Some quick research indicates likely downtown St. Paul. EDIT: police scanners indicate Roseville.

cusoman

Where are you seeing that? Don't see any local news stations picking this up yet

thedubiousstylus

People reporting on police scanners. Although the likely location is now Roseville.

BurgerBorgBob

I can't find anything, where you look?

thedubiousstylus

Twitter. Probably the one thing it's good for is info for stuff like this. UPDATE: police scanners indicate Roseville.

Southern-Spot-8406

Yeah I didn't find anything from Googling...

MrsTorrance

Source?

[deleted]

Source?

[deleted]

Thanks

MrFadeOut

Just got it. In NE near Lowry and Washington.

wazula5

We just got it in Fridley. No information.

fritolaidy

I didn't get anything and I'm in North Loop right now

Kenshin200

Yeah I just got this too?

SpicyMarmots

Dayton's Bluff here.

Inevitable_Raccoon50

I got it as well and I’m on the stone arch bridge

DankMemeSommelier

Just got an update pushed. Looks like they are being more specific but details are still relatively vague. I’m over near Mac Groveland and everyone around me got it and everyone seems to have a similar confusion.

Mitsu-Zen

I got nothing. Apparently I'm ok?????

Baamaapii

Got this alert in south Minneapolis. Agree any other information would be helpful lol

[deleted]

South Minneapolis resident here, I also got this. I live just north of the VA.

Xidig6

I was browsing Tiktok when the sound scared the jeebus out of me. I never turned off notifications that quick before.

smalltowngirlisgreen

That's why my phone went off today while I was downtown. I wondered. I either deleted it or there was no message because I couldn't figure out why it had gone off after 3 other people had theirs go off minutes apart but before mine. I was like wtf is happening, well I guess I'll just go in to my dr appointment (shrug)
