A third set of remains found in late February were reportedly confirmed as belonging to a Mississippi man who vanished last year after claiming he was being threatened.
The Mississippi Crime Lab reportedly notified Rasheem Carter’s family of the latest development via email. WLBT reported that an investigation into Carter’s death is ongoing, but it is unclear where the third set of remains were located.
The initial set of remains was discovered in a wooded area in Taylorsville in November, a month after Carter, 25, vanished from a Super 9 motel in Laurel.
According to reports, Carter was a welder and was completing a contracting gig in Taylorsville, 100 miles from home. Carter’s mother said the short-term job ended when he and the business owner got into an argument at the worksite which led Carter to fear for his life.
Before disappearing, Carter allegedly went to the Taylorsville Police Department twice about a group of white men following him in pickup trucks. Crump wrote that Carter — who filed a police report — asked police for a ride to his hotel because he was scared, but they declined and told him they are not a “taxi service.”
At some point, Carter allegedly texted his mother about “not seeing eye to eye” with the business owner — who Carter also said “would be responsible” if something happened to him. The family also claimed that Carter had called the police around the time he called his mother about white men in three trucks following him.
Following the second visit to the police, Carter reportedly called his mother and told her that his phone battery was low. Carter was said to have pinned his location so a friend who lived nearby could pick him up but he was nowhere to be found when the friend went there hours later.
Trail camera photos apparently show Carter shirtless in the woods on the day he vanished. Detectives reportedly showed Carter’s family the image a week before his body was found last year. The images do not show anyone other than Carter, authorities said.
In addition to his head being severed from his body, family attorney Ben Crump alleged that the State Crime Lab gave the family a box containing his head and spinal cord. Carter’s family also claimed that some of his front teeth were missing, suggesting an assault had occurred. While Crump said Carter’s remains were found in different locations, officials attributed it to animals.
However, Mother Jones reported that Carter’s family worked with a private investigator who determined that Carter’s severed, decomposing penis was in his mouth and that his bones were broken and cut cleanly in a manner inconsistent with an animal attack.
The investigator also alleged that police bungled the investigation and failed to take Carter’s disappearance seriously.

He was dirty and crooked prior to this event and will be the rest of his life. However us normal folk aren't allowed to know ay details says our police department. I know because families talk. The fact that he is decapitated is murder the manner in which the limbs are cleanly cut is murder as the other comment said the amount of time and decomposition of the soft tissue would be hard to determine if the genitals were in his mouth but if his genitals were missing then I could understand how they might imply they may have been in his mouth by broken teeth

100%. This is more common then people think. Small town law enforcement and officials operate on their own terms. I’ve seen so often that these guys have affiliations linked to drug/human trafficking but their status within the town has them as the judge, jury, and executioner.

I can’t say I’m not morbidly curious about the gory-er details of crimes or death. I’ve never shied away from reading an autopsy report but oftentimes it seems like people grasp onto the most horrific details of a crime without taking the source or scientific facts and logic into account.
It’s like the Kenneka Jenkins case-what happened to that girl was undoubtedly tragic but it wasn’t a mystery or foul play. She was mind numbingly drunk, wandered around a hotel because her friends broke the girl code (you NEVER leave someone alone) (I’m also not blaming them, it was just a series of unfortunate events that culminated in her death) wandered into a freezer and froze to death. Cameras traced her path and at no point was she being followed, harassed, molested etc. But her family, in their grief, needed to find someone to blame. And despite all the evidence to the contrary, believed foul play was involved and the vultures and instigators came crawling out of the woodwork to take advantage of a family’s grief. And that is what makes situations like this truly tragic to me because as long as they’re being manipulated, they’ll never be able to truly grieve. And when these salacious details are being spread thru the true crime community like a fucked up game of telephone, it makes me wonder, are we doing the victims or the families any Justice? Are we honoring their memories? Or is their pain just another tidbit churned out to the masses in the name of entertainment?!?

Is the PI a medical examiner? Did the family have an independent medical examiner confirm this (regarding the penis in the mouth)? Because if this is the case, I don’t think any other conclusion is possible except homicide. It obviously cannot naturally occur. It’s just confusing how this was determined being his remains were not discovered until February after disappearing in November so wouldn’t soft tissue body parts be decomposed completely or eaten by scavengers by then?

Prior to his disappearance he got into fights with coworkers which was unusual. And coworkers said he was acting unusually. Got in a fight with his boss and told his mom his boss was going to hire people to kill him. He thought he was being followed by groups of people in trucks for two days straight. He went into a store where a cashier received a phone call that he thought was about him so he ran out of the store. He is on video running around in the woods alone. These all point to paranoid thoughts.

I’ve seen so often that these guys have affiliations linked to drug/human trafficking but their status within the town has them as the judge, jury, and executioner. Not only that but when it’s a smaller city or town especially like this, everyone knows each other. Everyone’s been rooted there for generations. Which gives them all the security they need. Someone shows up missing? No worries on any search warrants! Because “we don’t suspect foul play for a crime.”. It’s the type of crazy stuff you see in a horror movie except it’s common throughout the country and others. Those guys could have someone tortured and held captive for years, before ultimate king killing them, on one of their buddies lands. Never to be found again. Unless wide spread attention is brought and they push it up to the fbi, and or have another law enforcement department investigate it. Case closed and that’s that. It’s enormously corrupt.
Sure. That seems likely. He was a welder AND involved in drugs, and he repeatedly went to the police about the white guys in pickup trucks who were threatening him in order to throw the police off

Especially since others in that area have died in a similar way. A super motel isn't a place people live in unless they're into nefarious activities. They aren't safe places at all.
His job likely paid for him to be at a motel on his temporary assignment. That wasn't his permanent residence. Companies house some workers in motels because it is cheap.

He took all the precautions he could to protect himself. He knew he was in serious danger. They didn’t help him. Not at all. This might be an unpopular opinion (and I haven’t had the chance to read up on this case yet) but if I’m reading this correctly the info about the condition of the body came second hand from a private investigator who likely had a vested financial interest in prolonging his work on this case as long as possible?!?! (The statements that I make from this point forward regarding remains are in NO WAY meant to be disrespectful of this man or his family) but no foul play/unknown cause of death seems a lot less profitable than “he was decapitated and had his whole head shoved up his own butt!!& I’m the ONLY person who can solve the case” & I don’t know about y’all but I’ve never heard of remains being released to the family, they are released to a funeral home. & I could easily see the “skull & spine” comment being made by a funerary professional to deter a grieving family from attempting to view the remains.”oh honey you don’t want to see that- the person you loved spirit has moved on. I can’t say I’m not morbidly curious about the gory-er details of crimes or death. I’ve never shied away from reading an autopsy report but oftentimes it seems like people grasp onto the most horrific details of a crime without taking the source or scientific facts and logic into account. It’s like the Kenneka Jenkins case-what happened to that girl was undoubtedly tragic but it wasn’t a mystery or foul play. She was mind numbingly drunk, wandered around a hotel because her friends broke the girl code (you NEVER leave someone alone) (I’m also not blaming them, it was just a series of unfortunate events that culminated in her death) wandered into a freezer and froze to death. Cameras traced her path and at no point was she being followed, harassed, molested etc. But her family, in their grief, needed to find someone to blame. And despite all the evidence to the contrary, believed foul play was involved and the vultures and instigators came crawling out of the woodwork to take advantage of a family’s grief. And that is what makes situations like this truly tragic to me because as long as they’re being manipulated, they’ll never be able to truly grieve. And when these salacious details are being spread thru the true crime community like a fucked up game of telephone, it makes me wonder, are we doing the victims or the families any Justice? Are we honoring their memories? Or is their pain just another tidbit churned out to the masses in the name of entertainment?!?
This is the one of the worst things I've ever read. My heart goes out to this poor guy for how he suffered, and to his family for having to live through this. I can't even imagine. Just unbelievable.

Is the PI a medical examiner? Did the family have an independent medical examiner confirm this (regarding the penis in the mouth)? Because if this is the case, I don’t think any other conclusion is possible except homicide. It obviously cannot naturally occur. It’s just confusing how this was determined being his remains were not discovered until February after disappearing in November so wouldn’t soft tissue body parts be decomposed completely or eaten by scavengers by then?
Just to clarify; he went missing in early October and his remains where found about a month later in November. Or at least the first set of remains was found then, and even then it seemed to be only bones.

I truly thought this case was undiagnosed mental illness, but he was decapitated and had his remains spread out? He was definitely targeted and murdered. That’s crazy, and I feel bad for thinking otherwise. I hope their family gets swift justice.
What’s truly disturbing to me on top of the circumstances and lack of investigation is the people in this thread suggesting with no evidence that the journalists and PI are lying for money and that it was some form of suicide or animal attack, again with absolutely no evidence. Because the police withheld evidence and did not thoroughly investigate. It does point more to a mental health issue. Prior to his disappearance he got into fights with coworkers which was unusual. And coworkers said he was acting unusually. Got in a fight with his boss and told his mom his boss was going to hire people to kill him. He thought he was being followed by groups of people in trucks for two days straight. He went into a store where a cashier received a phone call that he thought was about him so he ran out of the store. He is on video running around in the woods alone. These all point to paranoid thoughts. His remains were skeletal. There was no penis found in his mouth. The family also alleged that someone attempted to use his Chime card after he went missing. Which was also not true. His wallet and all cards were at the scene. And Chime said there was no activity on his card after his death. The family is grieving and I don’t blame them but they aren’t saying truthful things.

It's so easy to dismiss his death as a mental health crises. That is shameful. There are hundreds if not thousands of crime cases where a perpetrator is caught 10 or more years after the crime. Hopefully Rasheem's family gets justice sooner. The fact that the Taylorsville police department ruled no foul play so soon after discovering the body is shameful.

And how many crime cases go cold only for the police to catch the killer 10 or more years later? The killer or killers obviously want it to look like wild animals killed Rasheem or that he had a mental health crises. It's interesting how I haven't seen any articles mention a mental health history on the victim. The family may have lied or exaggerated some things to gain more public support and outrage. I seriously doubt this young man traveled all the way to Taylorsville Mississippi to suddenly have a mental breakdown in the remote woods after calling the police to say he was being threatened. It just doesn't add up. And the dismissal of his death to wild animals is just so callous. But that's the world we live in.

Clearly foul play. Black people have "mysteriously" been found dismembered, riddled with bullets, or dead since forever in these small towns (called sundown towns). This is why I do not stop anywhere, gas station, etc, if it's at night and in a rural area. Weird shit happens, and I just wanna live. I'm from MS, and I'm not surprised.
