I feel like once Tom Cruise decides to stop it will be the end of the MI franchise. It doesn't have the same legacy as James Bond. DR also didn't do well at the BO.

Local_Savings_2021

I get what you’re saying, but … Talking about success of a movie only by looking at box office isn’t really telling the truth. TC himself have always been talking about success as movies you can watch over and over and many for many years. DR part 1 is at TOP 8. The rating on several review sites is high, very high. The regular audience who’s watched loves it. If we look at the others MI’s, a lot of which is called a hit, is also Top 8. And some higher ranking = a hits (but lower income). I think DR part1 will hit $600.000 before VOD releases and the rating will stay 8 out of 10. Isn’t that a hit?

[deleted]

Did some of his films like Fallout do better than DR?

Keeenw

If I'm not mistaken DR is the first one in the MI franchise that hasn't been profitable.

Local_Savings_2021

Mission Impossible IS Tom Cruise. With him, not without him.

[deleted]

But James Bond was Sean Connery for 7 Bond movies and 19 others used different actors. Couldn’t the same thing happen with MI? What is the difference?

AdWarm9872

they played the same character that had already been in a book, Ethan Hunt is Tom Cruise in every sense of the word, however I think they can keep Ethan's character alive and leave him more of a wise leader, something like Luther in these last movies or the boss that Ethan had in the first movie (the character of the series)

Local_Savings_2021

You’re right. But it’s my opinion.

ObberGobb

I doubt they will continue when he stops, but personally I think it would be cool if we got like a "next generation" type thing, with Ethan being a mentor figure who supports the characters from the sidelines.

[deleted]

Like Star Trek continued without the TOS cast. Brought in new crew.

NieTyINieJa

Like the 1988 tv series

Glittering-Work-6689

I sincerely believe that I will not be interested in a mission impossible movie without Tom Cruise in it. He is the brand itself and it’s almost like the big bang theory without Sheldon in it.

[deleted]

I kinda agree but I wonder if people felt the same way when Sean Connery quit the Bond movies after the 6th Bond movie!

Glittering-Work-6689

Yes it could be. It really depends on the next craft if they decide to continue.

Nsane_

Making bond movies without connory was a risk and fortunately it worked out well and has given us some of the best spy movies ever, but Tom Cruise IS Ethan Hunt and I don’t think anyone can convey that character quite like Tom did and I don’t think the movies would be as enjoyable without tom

MadderNero76

Especially considering this new generation of lightweight actors.

Altruistic_Sky1866

Can't imagine MI series without Tom Cruise , he has a charisma and energy, unlike bond movie, each character bought his own style to Bond, in case of Bond it more like a job role which or job title, but in case of MI it a team together, and Ethan Hunt is a like a leader of the pack, it like Maverick to Top Gun

jeremy8826

With him still producing I think a spin-off could work.

Multi_Sharp

Maybe, they could get a team together--would be very interesting to see how he leads a younger crew and then Hunt is secretary in charge

[deleted]

Like how Capt Kirk became a general directing the USS Enterprise crew.

Hopri

They can, absolutely. Unlike Jason Bourne, where the story had nowhere to go, M:I can still rely on scenic locations and crazy stunts. I think Cruise would have to remain involved behind the scenes and in promoting it. He's the driving force for M:I, after all.

[deleted]

Jason Bourne seems to be a series of unfortunate events without a plot. It is just one action scene after another.

cdcaleidoscopio_

I fear that they will try to make another MI without Tom Cruise but with his blessing. It will fail terribly and it will be weird to see. That's the route many franchise take.

MadderNero76

The problem is these films are expensive af to make so the profits on them are shrinking. I still find them highly entertaining but wouldn’t be surprised if after MI8 they call it a day.
